What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

TTFN

It turns out that last week was World Breastfeeding Week (motto: "There's a sucker born every minute.") In honor of the occasion, here's what was served at a hospital-sponsored picnic for moms and their babies:

If you're wondering what a life preserver has to do with breastfeeding, then rest assured that so are the rest of us. Personally I like to think that the Wreckerator was in the process of drawing one huge bazooga when s/he was stopped by some killjoy middle manager.

Also note that breastfed babies are "reading for anything." Naturally, I think you'll agree with me when I say this theory simply must be tested. So, the next time you see a mom breastfeeding, try to see if her kid is also reading. (You know, like this.) Then, once you've recovered from the police tasing and posted bail, be sure to report your findings back to us, k?

Anony M., I'll let you explain today's title. ;)

Maybe it's a recycled breast cancer awareness cake from last year. The motto was "Save the ta-tas!"

I agree about the life preserver. Someone was definitely in the middle of drawing a giant boob and got told off.

I think the boob would have been perfectly acceptable. :)

Hot pink life preservers don't remind you of breastfeeding? Oh wait, me neither. Too funny!

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMelinda

"Breastfed babies are reading for anything"?

Does it count if *I* am breastfeeding my baby while reading Cake Wrecks?

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPenny

Reading for Anything.

'101 Breastmilk Recipes' perhaps?

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPixie

haha! :)) nice one!

TTFN = Ta Ta For Now (giggle tatas lol)

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSuburban Princess

Welll... they say breast milk is best for babies, so, by extension, breastfeeding saves lives, hence the life preserver? (That's the explanation my overcaffeinated brain has come up with.)

As for the reading babies... I have nothing.

hmmm....I'm not really sure what the bottom two lines say. Does it really say breastfed or does it say busdfed? I'm confused but I'm sure the librarians in the world are rejoicing that they'll be reading for anything!!

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAFWingMom

I personally like the...balloons? Sure, we'll go with balloons.

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLiz

I thought that said reading - but had to wait for the commentary to make sure! I can assure you none of my kids can read yet - maybe i did something wrong?

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered Commenter*~*Lis*~*

Weel, it makes sense if the word is Ready! :)

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLiz Autry

So, wait. Are those supposed to be balloons or something much much smaller?

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered Commentermike

Oh dog. Wow. Why the reading breastfed babies get a life preserver is beyond me. Okay, I can make the connection, but I just choose not to do that.

I prefer your frosting booby idea. Hmmm...though that would be more appropriate at a men's party, now wouldn't it?

Ta-tas for now, that's awesome.

WV: sabones: I got sabones when I saw the booby cake. (yes, I'm a 12 year old boy now?)

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLJ

Cute spermatazoa detail. Me likey.

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAlix

Breastfeeding is a life saver, especially in places with high poverty, little sanitation and inferior nutrition, hence the life preserver (or as some call them "life saver".) It's not really THAT much of a stretch.

The misspelling though... I can't help you with that one.

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSunny

I think the confusion stems from the fact that the lower half of the cake isn't really about breastfeeding at all. The message is that "Beesaful Babies are Reading for Anything," up to and including shipwrecks and poolside emergencies. Beesaful kids are unfailingly literate.

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNaomi

I thought the freaky balloon thingies were actually baby rattles, but perhaps not. Either way...I know they say breastfeeding improves cognition, but really? Reading for anything?

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDiana

breast-feeding = saving lives. okay, it's a strrrrretch using the life perserver.

but babies "reading for anything"?! no excuse. it's like no one ever proofs these cakes.

oh, and happy belated world breastfeeding week, y'all!

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTerry Lee

(Mischievous grin)
Next time I see a mom breastfeeding her kid in public, I'm a-gonna go ask what reading level the kid's on. :op

Not really, folks, calm down!!

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

Okay, the "life preserver" is clearly a teething ring. I'm not sure, however, what a teething ring has to do with breastfeeding, either...

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAunt Sat

Ironically, I was breastfeeding while reading this post. I looked down to see what my son was doing...no reading. So, I think that statement's wrong.

I'll keep you updated in the event of my 12-month-old whipping out Charlotte's Web while eating.

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterarabelle marie

Doesn't TTFN stand for "Ta-Ta's for Nourishment"?

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterteapotjan

Yes, please, explain the title? I saw "TTFN" and thought, "ta-ta for now..."oh, WAIT! I get it!

I thought, seriously, Jen, that CW was going bye-bye. I now see that you were just going Ta-Ta!

(seriously, I didn't get it until I typed it out. too early.)

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterEtiquette Bitch

Well... our local main library opened a breast feeding room this week, so that cake would work there. But then the 'lifesaver' image would be a bit off.

Rather pretty cake, though. Colors are attractive.

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterZhoen

I just saw an infomercial for a baby reading system - "My baby was reading at 8 months!" Maybe this system is most effective in conjunction with breastfeeding.

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKath

Breastfeeding is a huge lifesaver, especially in places where people don't have safe water, and for premies.

There are cities called Reading, both in the US & UK...possibly it's a conscious pun? Or perhaps it's just wrecktastic!

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJust A Midwife

Surely it was supposed to read, "Ready for Anything"

Or possibly... "Feeding for Anything"?

Hmm...

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBanana Harlequin

The preserver is not there because breastfeeding "saves lives." That IS a stretch. It's there because if the words were correct... "ready for anything"... then the babies are, well, ready for anything. It makes more sense than you think.

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Doesn't it kind of look like a breastfeeding pillow? Maybe? If you squint?

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRayRay

If that really is a "breastfeeding is a lifesaver" pun, then breastfeeding obviously does not enhance creativity.

The breastfeeding/teething ring comment made me cringe, and I don't even have kids! Ow...

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMorgi

I know the answer! Well, about the life preserver anyway. The spleling is beyond me.

This year's WBW theme is "Breastfeeding: a vital emergency response." The idea is to highlight how breastfeeding truly saves babies' lives in disaster zones and other emergency circumstances. So I guess the folks who ordered the cake thought, "How can we visually represent help in an emergency?" It makes at least as much sense as the official logo, which looks like a sheriff's badge.

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterChristine

According to www.breastfeedingweek.org the theme for this year is "Breastfeeding: A Vital Emergency Response" - so I guess the life preserver is a symbol of emergency response. And I like the title for today's post :)

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMormishmom

Are those sperm on the side trying to impregnate the life preserver?

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNatalie

I breastfeed & my baby doesn't read while he is eating! Dangit...how do I get on that bandwagon?

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAlicia

It was meant to say "Breastfed Babies Are Ready for Anything". See this breastfeeding poster.

And the "life preserver" is there; it's evidently the logo.

http://www.ilca.org/files/Bookstore/PosterEnglish09_SampleOnly.pdf

So it's actually far more Wrecky than you thought. Bonus!

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Clearly the wreckerator was NOT breastfed as a baby!

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

lol bazonga lol

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered Commentercshields

See, with the whole breastfeeding issue I didn't think it was a life preserver, I thought it was a nipple shield!

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered Commenter~Anne

I'm hoping-hoping-hoping that it's supposed to read "Breastfed Babies are READY for anything" and they got a non-breastfed wreckerator.

(Though, to be fair...my son absolutely, positively refused to breastfeed and still had his alphabet down by 28 months. Sometimes we think it's probably best if his little brain WAS damaged by all the formula we fed him. ; P )

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKristen

I think this cake is missing a carrot jockey. After all, once they start reading, all bets are off. Carrot jockey-ing is the next step in the natural progression of infant development. DUH.

http://www.ilca.org/files/Bookstore/PosterEnglish09_SampleOnly.pdf

Okay, I followed the link and the theme is explained... the spelling - not so much.

TTFN: Take Time For Nursing

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJill

Funny, I am breastfeeding my baby right now!

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJodi

Liz Autry is right, I believe. It was supposed to say "Ready for anything" and someone didn't proofread. The life preserver *almost* makes sense then (but I prefer to believe that someone was stopped in the middle of putting a giant ta-ta on there!)

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Ha! I just now got the point of the title. Good one.

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDorci

It looks kind of like a nipple shield to me. Breastfeeding moms use them if they have inverted nipples. Truly a "lifesaver" for some moms.

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBones

This year's theme for World Breastfeeding Week was "Breastfeeding: A Vital Emergency Resonse."

The theme emphasizes that, not only are breastfed babies "prepared for life," but that breastfeeding can, quite literally, be the difference between life and death in an emergency situation.

More info here: http://worldbreastfeedingweek.org/

So, that explains the life preserver, and I'm pretty sure the cake was supposed to read "Breastfed babies are READY for anything!"

(And @penny, I am breastfeeding my baby while reading/commenting, too! ;-) )

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterWhozat

Whoops, I really did skim the comments to see if someone had answered about the WBW theme, and didn't see any. Maybe they were just approved while I was typing?

Funniest thing I found when reading the rest of the comments just now?

@LadyKay is my sister!

I don't think I've ever commented here before, and I'm betting she hasn't either.

I am not surprised that when we both did, it was on a breastfeeding related cake.

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterWhozat

... For the sake of spreading the controversy: I was breastfed as a baby, and I love reading.

:P
