Sunday Sweets: At The Movies
January 8, 2012 Well, I think Jen took pity on me this week, after I admitted in my last Sunday Sweets post how terrified I was of... well, pretty much every movie ever made during my childhood. So today, we've arranged for Completely Happy Non-Scary Movie Sweets!
Now, I just have to try not to let it slip that Wall-E totally made me cry. Dang it.

This baker really captured Wall-E's sad little rusted robot eyes. And look, he's all dressed up for Eve in a bow tie! Gah! I need a tissue!
Ok, this one will cheer me UP. I literally said "WOW!" out loud, about seven times, and that was before I had even looked closer at the weather vane, and shingles, and garden hose.

Russell! I didn't know a cake could look enthusiastic! I love the errant collar poking out over his bandana, and of course, that hair. I would feel like a soulless brute slicing this cutie up to eat!
But speaking of slicing, you'd better get out your katana, because these Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are ready for action.

I can't imagine the time it took to sculpt one of these dudes, let alone all four, plus decorate the whole exquisitely detailed cake! I bow to you, baker sensei.

Inspired by Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, another movie that I'm totally not going to admit made me cry. Why can't Scrat just catch that darn acorn for once, WHY?!
I have nothing but love for Tim Burton's version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which I think we can all agree, is way less creepy than the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

I also love the subtle simplicity of this cake, about as subtle as an everlasting gobstopper perched atop a giant Wonka-hat cake on a purple pile of edible satin can be, that is. And the golden ticket! How ever did they make that?!
Luckily this next cake must not remain untouched by human hands, because it looks delicious!
I call the piece with the chocolate waterfall! Both of them!
I love how this cake chronologically represents the scenes and characters from The Wizard of Oz: from Dorothy to Glinda, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, the field of poppies and finally, the City of Oz.

Nope, sorry Toothless, you're just as cute, too! And so are all the teensy flowers and foliage spilling over the sides of this cake. Even the rocks are cute!

Oh, that hookah-smoking Caterpillar! He's such a fungi. (Sorry, that's the only mushroom joke I know).
And finally, an appropriately topsy-turvy cake to celebrate the wacky world of Wonderland.
I love the tiny tea set, and the daisy and daffodils (they always get overlooked!), and the curve in that Ace of Hearts. It's all in the details!
The only things missing are the words, "Eat Me!"

I've gotta ask, why do such skilled people make such beautiful things that will only be completely Eaten??? Why aren't they making them in clay or Fimo or plaster? I feel sad knowing these are all destroyed by now most likely.

You were right. My daughter was in here looking at the cakes with me. I got a lot of "Oh... that's cool!" or "I love it!" But when we got to the Tangled cakes it was.... "OH!! OH!!!!! OOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHH!!!! MOM! That's the coolest cake EVER!!" She especially loved the tower... very fun post guys! Thanks for sharing!!
OMG, I'm in love with the Night Fury cake. I'm nearly 28 and shamelessly in love with How To Train Your Dragon. I could never cut into that. Or ANY of these for that matter!
John, how can you possibly think that Charlie and the Chocolate factory is less creepy than the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory?? HOW??? Did you see the part where he has his braces on? CREEPY. In comparison Willy Wonka is such a gentlemen. I vote original all the way.

as always, these are AMAZING! like, out of control good and almost a shame that they would be cut into and eaten! i am especially fond of the topsy-turvy alice in wonderland cake and the multi-layered wizard of oz.
love the russell character cake and the house from up... but... well... the hose is not located in the right spot. OH, i hate to be one of those, but after you guys were "and look at the hose!", i did. and i just happened to watch this movie last night, too. the hose is located right next to the steps, not on the outer wall. that said, the detail on that cake is beyond amazing and i totally would get why the cake artist (because they are artists) would choose to put the hose there... it's just not where it goes. (am i letting all the air out of the balloons? sorry... but you know someone was going to point that out.)

The entire point of amazing cakes like these is that they don't last! It's the same reason people carve amazing things into real pumpkins that will rot, or build fantastic sandcastles that will get destroyed, or make snow or ice sculptures. There's something to be said for having to enjoy something in the now because it won't be around forever. And being able to eat it - well that's a bonus!
The How To Train Your Dragon cake made me go 'awww!' out loud! He looks so fierce and determined chowing down on that fish. The artist's got some serious sculpting chops to make that one work.
Toothless is too cute! But Wizard of Oz...that is probably my top childhood traumatizing movie! I saw it when I was about 8, and I was TERRIFIED of the witch. :P

All of these are magnificent, and I am in awe.
I only disagree with one thing. Although I am a Tim Burton fan and Johnny Depp fan as well, I still found Depp's Wonka to have too much of a creepy "Chester the Molester" vibe for me. I'm sticking with Gene Wilder. To each their own, I guess. But that Wonka cake is stunning. Love, love, love the Gobstopper.

The sheer engineering involved in some of those is astounding
i assume the up cake is jelly beans for the balloons. i am amazed at the perfect randomness of them. i am curious to how they got it to stay up. i know there is a support in the "strings" but usually it will only support lightweight stuff and that many jellybeans would have to weigh a lot.

All of those were incredible! The night wall-e, fury, and reppunzel cakes especially, but nothing I have seen in ages comes close to that amazing house from UP. Increible.
I'm a baker and it doesn't bother me at all that my creations will be eaten... as long as I have good photos!
WOW WOW WOW! The UP one impressed me the most, but the Alice cakes are AMAZING! Heck, they all are of course! Too pretty to eat!
My three year old keeps saying "Oh. My. Gosh!!!!!!! Happy Birthday Cupcake!!!". Her favs are Wall-E and How to Train Your Dragon.
After Boo from Monsters, Inc., Russell is absolutely the cutest cartoon kid there is, and he makes me smile every time I see him. I want to swoop him up and hug him, even though the intrepid Wilderness Explorer that he is would likely chafe at that. Plus, there's the whole "he's a cartoon" thing that makes it a difficult prospect (but if I had a plush version, I'm sure that my family would find me squeezing the figurative stuffing out of him.)
I have to disagree with your Wonka movie ratings, Lindsey--Depp's is WAY creepier than Wilder's, not that there's anything wrong with that. I love them both on their own merits.
Count me in with those who disagree with you on The Tim Burton remake. The original is awesome and the remake scared me. All these cakes are absolutely amazing.
[Note from Jen: I'm on the fence as to which version was creepier, but I will say I love Gene Wilder best. Lindsey's comment about Burton's version being LESS creepy really made me laugh, though!]
John/Jen - do either of you know how the bunch of balloons was created/supported?
[Note from Jen: I don't know for certain, but if I had to guess I'd say there's a steel rod supporting a large Styrofoam balloon shape under all the smaller balloons. Anyone else have another theory?]

In answer to Sunshine Mary: because people BUY these. Then they take a great picture and don't become hoarders. I love to see people enjoy eating my creations as well as marveling at the look.
The original is far less creepy in terms of Willy Wonka. My brother won't even watch the new one. He saw a couple of minutes of it and was so creeped out by Johnny Depp's Wonka that he won't watch any more. Love these cakes though, especially Russell and the caterpillar. Excellent detail.
I came here to rant about how no normal human being could think the Gene Wilder version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was creepier than the Johnny Depp version, but then I saw the Toothless cake and now all my rage is totally gone ^-^ This is the first time I've ever, ever squeed out loud - and now my lifetime ambition is to make a Toothless cake that is at least half as cute as this one. Do want!
WOW you really think that the Johnny Depp version is less creepy?!? Pretty much every Tim Burton movie is to some degree of creepy, that is still wrong that he made Willy Wonka seem eerie.

@Lindsey Excuse me?? The creepy squirrels that spirit Veruca away?? Are you bleepin’ kidding me? I jumped from the couch and screeched- which woke the dog, who barked, and scared the crud out of me worse (“What! What are you barking at?” like he can answer that LOL). Sorry, the first one was just weird and not nightmare inducing. Of course, I’ll watch the new version again sometime and just get a snack (not nuts!) during that scene.
;) Off topic: these cakes are sublime. But those don’t appear to be jelly beans on the Up cake. They look almost like stamens used for gum paste flowers.
That "Up" cake is amazing! I don't know if I could eat it. I think that's the best cake ever.
Okay, I really, really, really want to know how they made the balloons for the UP cake. It's amazing. Can you find out pleeeze?
As for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, I agree, the Tim Burton version is MUCH creepier. Gene Wilder's all cute and huggable, Johnny Depp is like the eccentric neighbor that scared you when you were a kid. Which is exactly why I love the new version to pieces. Roald Dahl is a creepy writer, his movies should be creepy, too.(Plus, Helena Bonham Carter, Christopher Lee, Freddie Highmore and Deep Roy. How can you not love it?)
@skreidle, do you see all the posts from people saying they could never cut into some of these cakes? I would feel good about being right but that means the cakes would go moldy and be wasted. I'm not sure which would be worse. Why make something to eat that you wouldn't want to eat?
Oh my gosh! I squealed and cooed and sighed so much looking at these cakes that my parents downstairs are probably thinking I'm going into conniptions or something up here. Totally adorable! I want a plushie of that Toothless, and I want the tall Tangled cake, too! And wow, just wow with that Up cake! So freakin' awesome! Great post, and fabulous cakes.

My name is Denita, I'm 38 years old, and I am completely unashamed to admit I went *SQUEE!!!* over the cake with Toothless on it! I wish there was more fun How To Train your Dragon merchandise for grown-ups. I wouldn't mind wearing a Toothless tee shirt. :-)
I'm with Lindsey, the acid-trip boat ride in Gene Wilder's version creeped me out so much I've never seen the whole thing. Although, both movie versions are creepier than the book. :)
Oh, what a great delicious cakes! You did a great job in doing such great and delicious cakes. One of the most exciting one when I eat cake is the design where from the design itself you'll gonna love the taste. Perfect!

@Sunshine Mary -- There have also been several responses alluding to other ephemeral art forms (sand castles, snow/ice sculptures, pumpkins, etc.) and a response from a baker who makes such cakes so that they could be purchases, not hoarded, but eaten. :)
The commenters say that they "could never cut into" the cakes -- but a) if a great cake can be made once, a different great cake can be made after that, and b) if someone makes you a cake like that, you'll eat it. ;)

The whole time I was watching the new Willy Wonka I couldn't stop wondering why Johnny Depp had apparently modeled his character on late-era Michael Jackson. Or why all the Oompa Loompas were the same guy? I literally can't remember anything else about the movie except how much it creeped me out.
Um, in cake-related matters, that last cake (Alice) is amazing! Awesome movie-to-cake adaptation.

I LOVED both versions of Willy Wonka. I don't think either one is creepy. But Gene Wilder edges out Johnny Depp as one of my favourite actors.
And I've never seen How To Train Your Dragon, but that adorable Toothless cake has me convinced I should. That is just too cute!
