Sunday Sweets: At The Movies
January 8, 2012 Well, I think Jen took pity on me this week, after I admitted in my last Sunday Sweets post how terrified I was of... well, pretty much every movie ever made during my childhood. So today, we've arranged for Completely Happy Non-Scary Movie Sweets!
Now, I just have to try not to let it slip that Wall-E totally made me cry. Dang it.

This baker really captured Wall-E's sad little rusted robot eyes. And look, he's all dressed up for Eve in a bow tie! Gah! I need a tissue!
Ok, this one will cheer me UP. I literally said "WOW!" out loud, about seven times, and that was before I had even looked closer at the weather vane, and shingles, and garden hose.

Russell! I didn't know a cake could look enthusiastic! I love the errant collar poking out over his bandana, and of course, that hair. I would feel like a soulless brute slicing this cutie up to eat!
But speaking of slicing, you'd better get out your katana, because these Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are ready for action.

I can't imagine the time it took to sculpt one of these dudes, let alone all four, plus decorate the whole exquisitely detailed cake! I bow to you, baker sensei.

Inspired by Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, another movie that I'm totally not going to admit made me cry. Why can't Scrat just catch that darn acorn for once, WHY?!
I have nothing but love for Tim Burton's version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which I think we can all agree, is way less creepy than the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

I also love the subtle simplicity of this cake, about as subtle as an everlasting gobstopper perched atop a giant Wonka-hat cake on a purple pile of edible satin can be, that is. And the golden ticket! How ever did they make that?!
Luckily this next cake must not remain untouched by human hands, because it looks delicious!
I call the piece with the chocolate waterfall! Both of them!
I love how this cake chronologically represents the scenes and characters from The Wizard of Oz: from Dorothy to Glinda, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, the field of poppies and finally, the City of Oz.

Oh, that hookah-smoking Caterpillar! He's such a fungi. (Sorry, that's the only mushroom joke I know).
And finally, an appropriately topsy-turvy cake to celebrate the wacky world of Wonderland.
I love the tiny tea set, and the daisy and daffodils (they always get overlooked!), and the curve in that Ace of Hearts. It's all in the details!
The only things missing are the words, "Eat Me!"

Speaking as a musician (bass), when it comes to ephemeral art forms, music trumps everything. Especially when one comes from a jazz background (I grew up listening to the 'standards') -- we take pride in never playing a song the same way twice. Every solo is a one-off, never to be repeated.
[Relevance clause] Therefore, I would have no problem eating these. The challenge for the decorator is to top it the next time.
That said, I expect there would be a market for someone who could recreate special cakes in some permanent material. Why, I bet there are people in Florida who are good at crafts and have lots of free time who could do that sort of thing. If only we knew of some people like that...
I WANT a Toothless cake for my upcoming birthday!!!
Two things:
1) I desperately want the Tangled and How To Train Your Dragon cakes. To be honest, I like those movies more than my niece and nephew do anyway (I can't even get them to WATCH How To Train Your Dragon.)
2) The ever so slightly ironic (perhaps not the word, but I'm going with it for now) thing about the Kai cake is, even though I'm aware that Kai is Hawaiian for "ocean," I will always interpret it as how it translates in New Zealand Maori, which is "food," and that seems appropriate for a Chocolate Factory themed cake, if you ask me.
Speaking of crying, "Up" had me bawling in first 5 minutes. Love these cakes! I still refuse on principle to watch the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, though. There is no way Johnny Depp could match Gene Wilder.
I love Sunday Sweets. However I do have to disagree with you about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I find that version WAY more creepy than the original. But then I'm one of the few people that finds Johnny Depp extremely creepy and stalker-like.
I love that these talented artists have found a way to create art and make a living at the same time. Not much call for sculpturers in today's world, so this offers them the opportunity to create and earn money.
All these cakes are gorgeous! The Wizard of Oz cake, with its layers depicting the various characters and plot development, is extremely clever. However, I'm going to date myself now: My kids (yeah, not me, MY KIDS) played with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles when they were small, and they watched the TV show every week, so the TMNT cake holds a special place in my heart. Plus, every time I see one or more of those turtles, their theme song comes racing back into my head! Good memories.

I read this post and was oooh-ing and aaaahhh-ing and then got to the Rapunzel cakes... WOW! I scrolled back up, called in my 4 year old daughter and had her look at this post from the beginning. I scrolled down with her oooh-ing and aaaahhh-ing and then got to the Rapunzel cakes... her eyes got HUGE and she says, "MOMMY!!! I want that for my cake this year!!!" Now to figure out if she wants Rapunzel or the tower. ;-)

TOOOOOOOOOOOOTHLEEEEEEEEEEEESSS. That's all that registered in my head. At all. Nothing else. That is my favorite cake of all time. Glad to see it finally ended up on CW! I just gestured to all of that cake and I'm loving it.

my 4 yr old would absolutly freakin LOVE the Wizard of Oz and Tangled cakes ... her 2 all time favourite movies!
1) The Up cake is amazing! I also wonder how the balloons are constructed.
2) I found the second Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory to be disturbing, creepy, and wrong. I agree with the others - the second movie was super disturbing and twisted! Gene Wilder forever!
Love the WOZ cake EXCEPT it is missing TOTO!! Toto is the best part of WOZ! And yes - this movie scared the crap out of me when I was kid. I hated those flying monkeys.
My thoughts on Willie Wonka - I think the original version is creepier because it wasn't meant to be creepy, whereas with any Tim Burton movie you KNOW there is gonig to be creepy stuff.

made the mistake of showing these to my nearly 5 & 7 year olds and now they want one just like... Tangled, UP and Toothless... Mama is NOT capable of such perfection!! Guess they just get the gluten free cakes and cupcakes mama can make.
The Up "Cake" was actually a gingerbread house that company created for a local competition. It's stunning, it's just not cake.
Dear me, is the Ice Age -cake saying "Vihaan"? Is that actually someone's name or am I just reading it wrong? Because in Finnish, "vihaan" means "I hate". :D SIlly cake, that.
When I was a little girl, I would've DIED on the spot to have a cake that cool for my birthday! Awesome!

Seriously late to the party, but I just showed the Toothless cake to my fiance, and told him that I just found the cake for my next birthday. I adore that movie, and even he (who is usually not the animation fiend that I am) enjoys it as well.
And for the record, I am 44 years old, would totally wear a "How To Train Your Dragon" in a grown-up size. :)
Pardon my being cynical here.. but I'm sure the thousands of dollars a cake costs has something to do with the desire to make them, as well.
My grandson is insisting that I make an 'Up' cake for his fifth birthday! Trying to work out what the tiny balloons have been created from ...... my forthcoming attempt at a similar cake will probably make a good photograph (or two) for your page ..... I'll keep you posted!!
FYI.... the UP "cake" with balloons is not cake but a gingerbread house! Check out the pics and description of that gingerbread house on the company's facebook page!
Can anyone tell me how the balloon from "Up" was made? It's driving me crazy! It looks like styrofoam with pins stuck into it. Anyone?
