What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

That's Internet for "I Love You"

August is "Win With Civility Month."

You're welcome, world.

Look at it this way: At least CW has most of the wreckies finally spelling and using YOU'RE correctly! Bravo for CW. Love them all. CW is my FAVORITE site of all time. I visit daily for my laugh for the day and they never fail. I got my friends, fellow bakers (some professional) and my fire dept. pals hooked on CW! Keep doing what you do Jen and John!

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterCookiemama

Okay, I don't get it. Only 2 of those 14 miserable sentiments have misspellings. The rest are correct. How is it that those who espouse negativity are able to use grammar correctly?
Hmm, mabee I shud write not so gud.

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterShirley Fowley

WTF? Is this a thing? If this is the cake, what's the rest of the "party" like?

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterBW

Well, at least almost all of these are spelling error-free...they used "you're", and they used it correctly! Faith in humanity...RESTORED...until tomorrow that is. LOL

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterVaBeach alemaP

Hey, I'm willing to be dead to you, if it gets me cake ;) Especially that chocolate frosted one, mmhhh!

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKristin

I want sprinkles!

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterXena

What on EARTH? Is this like a famous funny quote from somewhere?

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterHAL

I've got to wonder what could cause such a caustic message to be put on a cake. In an email or posted letter maybe, but on a yummy cake? Do they have a "You're dead to us now" party to celebrate the occasion?

And yes, awesome how many spelled "you're" correctly. Way to go!

Sung to "Somebody That I Used to Know"

No, we'll never think of when we were together
'Cause now you've made us feel so crappy you should die
Told ourselves you were a fright, you see
I promise we won't miss your company
Push come to shove, you were a pain. THAT, we'll remember.

You're the perfect victim for a plate of cakey sadness.
No resignations. It's the end. Oh, it's the end.
So getting you this type of cake makes sense.
And trust me, whatsyerface, we won't stay friends.
Let's all admit that we're all glad that it's over.

So it's time that we all cut you out.
Start acting like you never happened and that you were nothing.
You're just that guy we got rid of
And we'll treat you like a stranger. It won't be that tough.
From now on we won't see you, so
We've collected all you stuff and changed your office number
We all think it's your time to go
You'll just be that person that we used to know.

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSharyn

What a very strange thing this is. Why would you hate someone so much you'd send them cake. But is the cake as horrid as it's icing? What lurks beneath?

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterBrenda

If you look at this as a message from the cake orderers to the cake makers, it looks like a fair number of these did, indeed, fail. Meta.

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterPing

Sharyn, applause, applause, applause!

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTaffy Cake

It brings back fond memories of the "Go Die in A Car Fire" cake.

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSharyn

Wha--hut?

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered Commentersam

Uhhhh.... No comment.

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTheCreepyTribble

The only semi-plausible occasion I can think of for these cakes are for when a coworker is leaving for a different (better?) job. Other than that, I have no clue.

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMAC

My favorite is cake #6 with the message from the dead to us. The question is whose dead are being referred to here, Jen's? Jen, remind your dead that if you don't have something nice to say don't say anything at all.

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterHeather

I was hoping someone would explain why these cakes are being done. Is it a quote from some movie I have not seen, some tv program I wouldn't be caught watching or just rude people?

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMargaret

That's for not being dead, or failing us, Jen, John (thoj) and the CakeWrecks team!!
@Sharyn -- love it!

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMaureen

And this has become a standard message message now instead of a costumized one, next to "Happy Birthday" and "It's a Girl (or Gril)". Oh, the humanity…

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAthena

This entire post has shattered my self confidence.

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAnon

I kind of like the contrast between the dead armadillo and the roses on number 5.

I remembered the original cake, and for a minute, I thought this was a wrecky replay. Then I scrolled down. And down. Dang, there's a lot of people with unresolved anger issues! I then scrolled back up to fully appreciate the post. :)

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMuria

Nice touch with the plastic "dead" armadillo on cake #5. But on cake # 10 with the toy dagger "stabbing" the cake...EEEEEP!!!

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterBigg3469

OK, I don't get this. If you're mad enough at someone to get a cake that says "You're dead to us now," then why are you serving them cake?

It appears from the photo backgrounds that most of these are being served at some kind of party or gathering. Why are you inviting this person and their friends to a party if they're dead to you?

Am I overanalyzing?

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTLC

I want the fifth Wreck but only for the armadillo .

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterThe Former CB

The armadillo on cake #5 is a nice touch.

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterWill

MAC has it right, the phrase is for departing coworkers.

The knife is a nice touch, I think. 0.o

BRAVA, Sharyn!

Is this the adult version of "You are ugly and your mother dresses you funny."? I was surprised there were so many of these cakes. Must be "a thing". Maybe "a thing" that needs to finish having its day.

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterNancy

Three, possibly four, of these have rainbows, normally associated with optimism. Are they symbols of hope for the person's failure?

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTachybaptus

Yummy hatred :P

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

This is the most depressing post I've ever seen on Cake Wrecks. Unfortunately I know people whose parents have said that to them, but not with cake. I sincerely hope these are for coworkers.

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterdrgchance

Mmmmmmm...'madillos!

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKae

Seriously, all I could think as I was scrolling through was "Great. Now I want cake."

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterRhonda

I really like how many comments mention the correct spelling of "you're". I noticed as well. No idea what the source of the nasty sentiment is

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermahler9

Number 5 is actually quite pretty as long as you don't take the armadillo into account. However, I did because i adore armadillos.

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

I think these were inspired from this previous Cake Wrecks post: Cryptic Cross Words. http://www.cakewrecks.com/home/2010/5/19/cryptic-cross-words.html

Jen started a meme! In a case like this, are congratulations in order? ;o)

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterEmily

Man, there's folks out there with issues. SMH. Pass me a slice of that chocolate frosted number, willya?

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDenita TwoDragons

But is the dead armadillo made of marzipan??

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterChava

I agree with those who think these are for employees who are moving on to different jobs. An ironic version of "goodbye and good luck." It might have been funny the first time someone did this, but now it's old and lame. Kind of in the same vein as couples smushing wedding cake in each others' faces. Some people find it hilarious; the rest of us think it's dumb.

That said, I like the armadillo and the little dagger! But what is that sad glop in the middle of an otherwise yummy looking chocolate cake?

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterPFlamingo

Does no one remember the movie The Yearling? This cake is the human version of throwing rocks at something you love, because you know it'll have a better life without you. It is a coping mechanism, because cake can never be truly hurtful as icing=love.
Love it, except the "your" cake, I hope to never be desensitized to that crime against the English language :)

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterCBushLite

From Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Joe_Schmo_Show:

"...After the written finish was executed, the actor in question would take a plate with their face painted on it and give it to Garman, who would then state a rhyming couplet that went "Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, (name), you're dead to us" then throw the plate into the fireplace, breaking it. ..."

I'm wondering if these cakes are for fans of this show. Never heard of it, but it could explain the odd sentiment. And the rainbows.

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterRuby

Giving the phrase 'eating your feelings' a whole new angle.

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterdawnsnarks

It's actually impressive that so many of them used the correct 'you're'

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterbrendalou

Either each of these people have a very healthy sense of humor (let's hope the same is true of the recipients) or they need to learn to commit to their feelings. If you actually actively despise someone enough to hope for their failure or to pretend they no longer exist, then giving them a cake is a little counterproductive. A simple text or post-it would have sufficed.

That said, the flowers on the first one are lovely. The rainbows seem a little cheery for such a message.

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTifa

Nothing enforces the point like a dead armadillo on your cake.

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTricia L

I'm just flabbergasted.
Why would you spend the money on the cake if you hate them that much?
Who would dare eat that cake? Considering the "epitaph" on the frosting, one wonders if the cake is laced with arsenic.
Or are these jokes at work as many have suggested?

Actually, my mother in law would have sent me that cake had she thought of it. She danced on the grave of our marriage when I finally had enough and filed for divorce.

So, yeah, it could also be a divorce cake....
who knows!

Well, the bakers are making their money so they don't care what's on the cake, I guess!

And I want sprinkles AND an upside down armadillo.

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterVickie

Ok Jen, your next blog needs to be a story behind the wrecks book because these are begging to be explained.

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterGalatae

Just wondered if anyone has ever pointed out that when someone says a wrong word with unintended hilarity ensuing its a malapropism. The character appears in The Rivals by Sheridan. Your wreakerators are obviously her descants....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malapropism

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterdiddleymaz

Add me to those who are simply impressed that so many of these cakes actually used correct grammar and spelling. The third cake from the bottom is really quite lovely! At least aside from the wishing you failure part of course. :b

August 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterPeachkins

This link below has nothing to do with this post specifically, more with the website in general; but I am far too lazy to check and see if anyone else has already posted it, LOL.

I am both intrigued and horrified by this device. Will this be the end of cake wrecking....forever?
