What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Cake of the Doctor

Happy Doctor Who Day, everyone! Come get some CAKE!

(By Sweet Dream Cake Company)

Gotta kick things off with the world's most famous blue box, and this one is a whopping four feet tall!

I wanted to show off more than just the TARDIS, though, so here are some sweet Who villains to liven up the party:

(By Happy Occasions Cakes)

A Cake Cyberman? Now THAT is an upgrade.

But I'd still be willing to exterminate this Dalek...

(By Mike's Amazing Cakes)

...WITH MY MOUTH.

Nomz.

If you have to make a cake of the Doctor's most terrifying villain, then I say, turn the Doctor into a bunny rabbit! That way the cute will even out the scary, like so:

(Also by Mike's Amazing Cakes)

Don't blink - 'cuz that bunny Who is too sweet to miss!

Careful, though; I think the Weeping Angel is peeking:

0.O

Do you believe in delicious irony?

(By Eat the Evidence)

Because eating a cakey adipose is wrong in all the right ways.

And not a villain at all, but check out this outstanding Ood!

(By That Little Cake Boutique for Wibbly Wobbly Cakey Bakers)

I hear his translation sphere even lights up!

Of course, we can't celebrate Doctor Who without the Time Lord himself:

(By Pink Cake Box)

As dashing as Eleven looks, I can't get over the open TARDIS door. WOW.

And here's one with homages to both Ten & Eleven:

(By Un Jeu d'Enfant)

Bow ties and fezzes and 3D glasses, oh my!

I love that the good Doctor is popping up in more themed weddings these days. Check out the oh-so-elegant Gallifreyan writing on this beauty:

(By Nom Nom Sweeties)

And here's John's favorite: an explosion of color with lots of Whovian surprises!

(By Artisan Cake Company)

I spy an adipose, an angel, and an ambushing Dalek!

And for the hardcore fans, let's see how much of this next one you recognize!

(By Delicious Snackies)

I see the fourth Doctor's scarf, a Time Lord's medallion, the crack in time (so cool), roses, Gallifreyan text, and I *think* that's a sonic screwdriver and the Master's pocket watch on top. WOWZA.

(Hit the link for more pics of the bottom tier; did anyone translate it yet?)

And finally, a gorgeous pop of classic colors and great design:

(By Cake Central member Emilsmee)

Love that bold red outlining, and the hand-painted tier of the famous Van Gogh "exploding TARDIS" is just perfect!

Hope you enjoyed today's Timey Wimey treats, everyone! No go forth, and be wibbly wobbly!

Oh so cool :D I love the humor of a cake made to look like fat XD

Glorious.

I want someone to make a cake of Jack Harkness. That might turn out as a wreck though. Ooh, or a Ten/Rose cake topper! Squeeeeeeeeee!

November 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTheCreepyTribble

Brilliant!!

November 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterBigg3469

What is the red thing with a silver egg inside on the top of the second-to-last cake?

November 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSusie

My brain still can't figure out how the open Tardis cake works...

November 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDNA

I am in love with today's sweets! That last cake is amazing! Thanks for sharing!

November 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAmber

@Susie: that "red thing with a silver egg in the middle" would be the top of Three's sonic screwdriver (and yes, you are correct, Jen). If you look closely you can see the top of the shaft hiding behind the Master's watch.

And I loved Thursday's "Lola" comic. (Talking to her new dog) "Max, this is very important. That guy is Doctor Who. And he flies through time and space in that thing. It's called the TARDIS." "I wish *I* had a magic Port-a-Potty..."

John's fave is my fave too, I also spy a souffle!

November 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAnne

Rabbit Who! I love it. All of these are s'wonderful!

November 23, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermsanthrope

I really want to see that angel cut into. It is seriously too realistic.

November 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJess f

Roses... <3

November 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterHani

That "time lord medallion" on that second to last cake is actually the Seal of Rassilon. :) These are all very impressive cakes but if I was going to have a Doctor Who themed cake it would have to make references too *all* the Doctors. Not just 10 and 11 (that's so boring!).

November 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTracy

Best. Cake. Wrecks./ Sunday Sweets. Evah!

November 23, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterchristina

I was going to say, don't forget the soufflé!! These are amazing. The adipose cake is SO adorable.

November 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterCorinna

Regarding the bottom layer of the second to the last cake. According to the maker's website, it says: "I love you through time and space and into the darkness". I'm beyond impressed!

November 23, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterdeeja

Translated: I love you through time and space and into the darkness.

It still amazes me to see The Doctor so widespread in pop culture again; I absolutely love it! "My" Doctors were Three and Four, Four being the peak of the show's popularity back then, but there was nothing like the pervasiveness of today. Now there's memes, fanfic, tv show references, memorabilia, and now cakes to share with our fellow Whovians. Its awesome being a geek nowadays :)

November 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle

I knew there was a reason I felt compelled to watch Doctor Who while I was working on crafty things today. :) Such awesome cakes! Seriously, though, Jen, are you trying to kill us all, posting pictures of a weeping angel cake? Don't you remember that that which holds the image of an angel becomes itself an angel? :D Thanks for making me smile after watching the episode The Angels Take Manhattan.

November 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLaura P.

I love how the gold cake tray adds a realistic yellow hue to the Adipose figures. Love even more that it was made by a crafty amatuer at home. Well done!

November 23, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterjackwire

Wait...the open Tardis door cake is painted?!

Wow wow wow wow!

Anne> Yes! I was wondering what looked like a make-up jar was supposed to be.

November 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSaraV

These are fabulous. Also I happen to know the recipient of that Dalek cake and apparently she puts its head out on Halloween.

November 24, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterprismaticvoid

Brilliant! Love them all.

November 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDonna Noble

Disappointed that there's not a jelly baby to be seen! Or a jammie dodger. Or even a fish finger! Awesome though (I especially love Tom Baker's scarf wrapped round that tier!)

November 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLeithVik

OOOOEEEEEOOOOOOO!

November 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterCecily

I am speechless. LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! This post is AWESOME. I'm swooning.

November 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterVicky

Michelle: I grew up on Four too!!! I remember getting beat up at school for being a "nerd that likes weird British stuff" and now here it is, all popular. What a funny little world we live in, eh? ;-)

I'm still trying to figure out the open TARDIS door myself. How did they do that?!?!

November 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDenita TwoDragons

Why does a Dalek come equipped with both an egg beater and a toilet plunger?

November 25, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterCharlie

I love all the fourth doctor references on the second to last cake! He's my favorite! His sonic and his scarf and the seal of Rassialon. (Spelling?) His was the first run to really deal with the timelords on Gallifrey.
Although, there needs to be a few third doctor ones wouldn't hurt.

November 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJesse

AND YOU ARE basically a rabbit.

November 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterPinkie Pie

Absolutely gorgeous! Every one of them!

@SaraCVT

Sorry it's so late, but thank you very much for explaining!

I'm in love with these. It's the middle of a snowstorm, the kids are home from school, and my little Whovians and I are pouring over Cake Wrecks, because *why not?* (The youngest, at 7, loves the posts of "that's what she wanted, that's what she got", as she puts it ... )

I'm absolutely in awe of these ones though. And that second-to-last one, with the souffle, just cracks me up that much more. There's a doctor in the ER here, and because of health issues (a cascade it seems), I've had to, for one reason or another, make multiple trips up there in the past year; for many of them, he's ended up treating me. The first time (blood clots caused by IVs from emergency surgery a few days earlier), he spotted my purse, on which I have a number of nerdy buttons, including several Doctor Who ones. One was of Clara, labelled "Souffle Girl." So the last time I was there (a week or so ago, pinched nerve in my leg), he spotted me and said "Oh hey, it's you, you keep coming to see me. I think of you as "Souffle Girl", but that's just my private nickname ... " My boyfriend was just grinning and trying not to laugh, and the nurse is looking like "Wait, WHAT?!" Until I said, "Yep, I have that button on here ... " and pointed to my purse.

I want cake now though ... but there's a snowstorm, and I don't think I have any mix even. xP
