What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Fall Into Sweets

It's Fall, y'all, which means pumpkins, pumpkins, EVERYWHERE:

(With Love & Confection)

I've never been a huge pumpkin pie fan, but cake? YES, PLEASE.

And while orange IS my favorite color, I'm still utterly smitten with these white pumpkins:

(By MadHouse Bakes)

And get this: the flavor is sweet potato spice, filled with spiced brown sugar buttercream and candied pecans. SWOON. And it's hand painted. YES YES PLEASE PLEASE.

Now check out this mind-boggling design:

(Spotted at the Tulsa State Fair, posted here, made by Karen Portaleo of Highland Bakery.)

I was so amazed by that "carved" design that I almost missed the teensy tiny mice. DON'T MISS THE TEENSY TINY MICE, YOU GUYS.

Of course, there's a lot more to Fall than just pumpkins, though.

There are also acorns:

(By Freshly Squeez'd)

And squirrels wearing perfect little crowns. (squee!)

And all those colorful changing leaves you lucky Northern types get to brag about:

(By Dream Day Cakes)

Down here in Florida all we get are pine cones and non-stop greenery. (Am I jealous? YEP.)

Those rainbow leaves can look gorgeous in shades of white, too, though:

(By Sin)

Another Fall staple: bales of hay (for hay rides!) and black cats in funny hats:

(By MadHouse Bakes)

Suh-WHEAT!

(Sorry, sorry. I know how my puns can go against the grain.)

(HAY-O!)

:D

And where there is hay, there must also be adorable scarecrow cookies. Because I said so.

(Submitted by Amanda N. & made by The Sweet Adventures of Sugarbelle)

Or how about a modern take on all that Fall leafy goodness?

(By The Cake Museum)

So fun!

Or, if you prefer a more traditional approach:

(By Wild Orchid Baking)

Stunning. Hard to believe the "stump" is cake, too!

Ooh, or how about an apple orchard cake?

(Photo via, cake by Designer Desserts)

I love the initials carved in the "birch" tier - so perfect for a Fall wedding! And you'll never believe this, but the apples are made of rice crispy treats. SERIOUSLY. (How you like them apples?)

Well, here's hoping the weather cools enough for us Floridians to crack some windows open soon, but 'til then, the rest of you have a cup of cider for me, k? Happy Sunday, everyone!

I almost missed the teensy, tiny mice. It would have been AWFUL!!!

These cakes are all stunning.

Perfect cakes for our Canadian Thanksgiving Weekend.

October 13, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterShirley Fowley

These are all stunning, but I am stumped by the fact that the bottom layer ofnthe cake by Wild Orchid Baking is cake (ba dum bum!). :)

October 13, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJules

Absolutely lovely! Dare i say, breathtaking!

October 13, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCorina H.

Love the last cake! I wish the leaves around our house were edible like those; we would have a banquet here in Michigan!

October 13, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterheloise

I can totally see my daughter pinning one or more of these cakes in her wedding file. ;) Those are so well done.

October 13, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterRenee

I would like to have the owl one! NOT to eat, of course. I'd dig out the dark-brown middle part, leaving the lovely, white filigree "casing" with the tree, etc. I'd let it sit and get so dried-out and stale that it'd be like bisque. Then, I'd use it as a pillar candle holder. The light would come through, and it would be so lovely!

our windows are tightly shut because the central heating has been on for two weeks already. go figure: i live about 8000km north of rome (i live in central europe), and rome is just a bit further north than the canadian border. no wonder it's cold already here. so the colorful leaves are all already littering the ground and the trees are wintery and empty. well, thank you for posting a reminder of my view from a couple weeks back - the cakes are geourgous!

Don't forget that we in Florida go from hurricane season, see the changing of the license plates, then go into tourist season.

October 13, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterEvan

Wow! The cakes are all so beautiful. I can't believe that those apples aren't real! You and Lindsey hit it out of the park every Sunday.

P.S. Keep those puns coming! :)

Hands down my favorite Sunday Sweets in a while- I love, love, love the minimalist tree/leaves, the squirrel, and, of course, the teensy mice. And, just because I'm thinking of it (I've encountered a bunch of sloppy Pinners this week), I really appreciate/admire how diligent you are in tracking down bakers and original links and such like. Thanks!

@Jules:
((GROAN!)) Haha~good one, though! Leaf it to someone to log in and give us acorny pun! =^~.-^=

Holy cow! Living in southern Arizona this post is the only way I'm going to see those beautiful Fall leaves & what a stunning display. It's actually been Fall-ish here for 2 weeks with lows in the 60's...the 60's! That's sweater weather in these here parts! Love the teeny tiny mice! How did they even do that carved look? And I had resolutely decided we were going to skip the pumpkin patch trip this year, & now I wanna go. ;).

I have trouble believing those are CAKES! Absolutely gorgeous - thank you for reminding me why I love October!

October 13, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJudyBeth

If you look closely at that incredible design on the owl cake, there's not only another teensy owl in the top left corner but there's a kitty cat on a branch in the bottom right corner! Owls, kittens, AND teensy mice? What an incredible cake!

October 13, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

I had to write an essay in Spanish about what I love in the fall, and one of the reasons I love it is all the fall cakes on Sunday Sweets!

October 13, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterEmily

Wow the cakes are all gorgeous. I love the cat.

October 13, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara

And this is pretty much why I want a fall wedding.

October 13, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLindsay

:D my face looking at the teensy mice cake although they are all great :))))

October 13, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

This post is the perfect accompaniment to me making applesauce today and not raking the many many leaves in my yard.

October 13, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDeirdre

I honestly thought the apples on that cake were REAL apples. Rice Krispy treats?????? How???? I'm stunned.

October 13, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterGinger

And all that snow and wind and rain us lucky Northern types get to brag about. Remember: there's a reason why snowbirds don't have wings.

Beautiful!!!!

Let's see, I'll start with the Tulsa State Fair cake, followed by the adorable scarecrow cooky and finish off with the absolutely gorgeous apple orchard cake with the birch tree initials. Which reminds me, hey, zoomom! Where's my kids' cakes?! Joseph had his birthday this past Thursday (Oct 10th) and Grace's was the Thursday before - what gives?! (....just kidding! ;-) Ah, if only all these gorgeous cakes were available in gluten-free and dairy-free AND egg-free...and sugar-free - we have a hypoglycemic in the family now - yay, more weird diets, just what we need...you need a Venn diagram to keep up with this family's eating options, I swear!. Gluten-free, probably not a problem, but everything else-free? Fugetaboutit! Gotta make it myself...and I am *seriously* lacking in the gastronomic talent area...

@JustAndrea - ((((((HUGS))))) !!! Been away the last few so I'm trying to make up for not sending HUGE HUGS sooner. Hope your FIL is outta the woods...or at least the ICU...Sending prayers your way as well. If it's not too much trouble, would appreciate an update on your FIL...cuz apparently I missed your previous bulletin. :-( Again, heartfelt hugs & prayers to you & yours...

As much as I like the owl cake, I gotta ask, "What is it?" It looks like a fancy white fence surrounding a giant block of florists' foam, topped with vermin infested pumpkins. What's up with that? More specifically, what is the florists' foam supposed to be?

I'm in the greater Los Angeles/Orange County metropolitan area and the weather is pleasant (although it is predicted that it will reach 90 F later in the week), the leaves are green and firmly attached to the trees. I do not miss fall foliage or cold weather one tiny bit. (Of course, I was raised here and lived in other parts of the country only as a grad student.)

October 13, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMariaTeresa

Thank you for featuring a cake from the Tulsa Sugar Show without a rude comment! I see cakes from the show on other blogs every year and they're usually accompanied by, "Tulsa? Like Oklahoma? Did anybody else know that those people knew anything about sugar art? Do they, like, even have indoor plumbing?" *inferred superior hair toss* Or something along those lines.

Apparently, many people forget that Queen of Cake Kerry Vincent, though Australian, now spends a good portion of her time here.

October 13, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJ

I actually shouted WAIT WHAT and had to scroll back up to look at the apples. Rice crispy treats for serious? Mind. Blown.

October 13, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHeather

I always love Sunday Sweets, even though I usually don't comment on them. Thank you to Jen, john, the other Jen, Sharyn, Lindsey, Renee, and anyone else involved in making Cake Wrecks the wonderful place it is.

Also - king squirrel rules.

October 13, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHaiku Joy

Now THESE cakes leave me salivating for fondant as a decorating medium - and that's saying something! I loved each and every one of them, for various reasons. Thanks so much for sharing them, Jen!

October 13, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCreative-Juices

Ooohhh! Aaaahhh! Whoah! Want, want, want, want, want!
Nice cakes. The detail is stunning and I'm loving the textures. Now don't mind me. I'll just be over here pretending that mostly white cake, 6th in line, is buttercream with white chocolate leaves and little cocoa-dusted chocolate truffle acorns.

October 13, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterteabunny

I am simply amazed that the apples on the last cake aren't real! That's mind blowing! I love fall and there's not one cake on here that I didn't absolutely love!!! Great job!!

October 13, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSara

amazing work.

October 13, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterarchersangel

I am in LOVE with these cakes! I had a fall wedding in my home-state of Minnesota (yep, "Up North" and on a lake...) and the surrounding trees had beautiful foliage that would perfectly match these leafy cakes! Hmmm, sounds like I need to plan an anniversary bash... ;)

October 13, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterGingerSnap

I want all these cakes! Perfect reminders that there is more to Fall than poorly frosted/decorated cakes and sad, squished cupcakes.

Also, @ Andrea: Not entirely sure what happened, but I hope it all turns out all right for everyone involved, and you all take care, k?

October 13, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterE. Anne

well if the person in tulsa who took the picture looked the name of the maker of the item is on the table i can almosot see the card in the picture so here is hoping they might have noticed as it is truly lovely, people from all over the world come to the tulsa state fair sugar arts show as it is one of the best around and if you havent seen it your missing out all the items there could be used for many sunday sweets as a matter of fact it has even been on the food network

October 13, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterkira

Not only are there teensy mice and owls and kitties on that amazing cake, the lower left-hand side of the tree grid has two little hillsides with graves on them!

October 13, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip From Hanford CA

Looks like the owl cake is an older one by Karen Portaleo! The name is on the entry form;

Even up here in the north, those changing leaves rarely change to blue or white.

October 15, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterkayk

Thank you for including my cake among these beauties! The second and third cakes made me gasp out loud! THEY ARE PHENOMENAL!
