What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Wreckage Of Unusual Size

In honor of the 24th anniversary of one of the greatest movies of all time, I'd like to tell you a story.

It's a story of the man in black:

Who may or may not look like the Noid from those old Domino's commercials.

And also a beautiful princess:

It's a tale of fencing and fighting,

of torture and despair,

"I've just sucked one year of your life away.
Now I need a glass of milk."

...of chases, escapes, and, of course, twoo wuv.

Also known as "Twoo huv"

There's also a subplot of a son avenging his father's murder.

"Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to... What's this? A cake?"

"Oooh, are those cherries?
I mean, uh...
Prepare to die.
And also pass me that fork over there."

Together, our heroes will defeat an evil prince, a wily Sicilian, a six-fingered man...

and, of course, Rodents Of Unusual Size.

"Hi."

"Btw, you may want to watch out for those popping noises. Trust me."

Bye bye, Jennifer B., Emily M., Jefferey W., Colin & Jen, Jan Y., Jennifer W., Nicole V., Rysha M., & Melanie H.! Have fun storming the castle!

Oh, and before I go: Anybody want a peanut?

Excellent read, I just passed this onto a friend who was doing a little research on that. And he actually bought me lunch as I found it for him smile So let me rephrase that: Thank you for lunch! "Not only is the universe stranger than we imagine, it is stranger ...

Brill. Yant.

I agree with best post ever.

Of course, I say that about once a week. But I never comment. So there's that.

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKrista

I didn't realize it until I read Angela's comment and then went back and looked at the cake, but I think those ARE Sorry Game pieces on the "dead dud" cake.

Doesn't that just clear up EVERYTHING?

No more TPB refs, I mean it!

DAAAAGH!

Long long ago when I was in junior high (this was before middle schools), a reporter for the school paper (this was after school papers) was taking a poll about favorite movies. I said "The Princess Bride" - she gave me a sneering look and said, "really?" I inquired what others had responded; most had claimed "Clueless" which of course was the more recent movie. I didn't chance my opinion.

I take satisfaction in knowing that I can without shame still claim "The Princess Bride" as my favorite movie, while all those teenage conformists are probably ashamed of their youthful enthusiasm.

I now teach college history. When discussing Napoleon last week, I said "He fell victim to one of the classic blunders: Never get involved in a land war in Asia." Three students broke out in huge grins of recognition. Those three are now my favorites. :-)

Sorry, Lucinda, but the lines are actually, "Get back, witch!" "I'm not a witch, I'm yer wife!"

Also sorry if I'm the 10th person to post this.

Now that I read your comment again, I see that you also called Vizzini "Vencini" and used "Impossible" instead of "Inconceivable." Wait, are you TRYING to make an Epcot?

Best Ever! Just made my day!

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMelissa

This is my new favorite post! :)

"Fezzik, are there rocks ahead?"
"If there are, we all be dead."

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJen

Just beautiful. I am so impressed at the meticulousness and restraint that must have gone into collecting and crafting this fine post. How long have you been working on it?

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered Commentercarriep

Too bad there wasn't a boob cake... "There's a shortage of perfect breasts in the world..."

I walked down the aisle to the theme song from TPB. :)

Best Post! Anything with massive Princess Bride quotes makes my heart happy :-)

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCorri Anne

Since the invention of the cake, there have been five cakes rated the most lopsided, the most bleurg. Theses ones left them all behind. The end.

Bahahah!! Great post-- "Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line!"

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterArlene

So you finally saw the movie!
Great post - wish the book tour was coming to Jacksnville, FL - I would so be there! Got your book - next one on my wish list - been following you for years! You have provided me with many laugh-out-loud moments! Thanks for all your hard work and creativity!

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMijinjax

This post has to go in The Classics or Fan Favs!

Love, love, love this movie. Sooooo many good quotes! Never go against a Sicilian when death is on the line! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha... thud

And I will have to say Shelly in Illinois' post reminded me...we had our pee-wee football game last weekend and they let some balloons go....
I had to laugh - the way the strings went in the wind as they went up looked just like those swimmers! Yikes! To think that these wreckerators had it right?????

My all time favourite movie - this post though tops it with the "Princess Batman Bride of Star Wars" theme. My only detraction is that the peanut should be in a Sunday Sweets - too cute!

I was reading this while playing with one of my guinea pigs. Is the ROUS cake supposed to be a guinea pig or a capybara?

The guinea pig then pooped on the couch. Maybe she doesn't like these cakes either.

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterHeather

That ROUS cake is really scary looking, but the chocolate coating makes it go down easier.

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJulie

The first cake looks like V from V for Vendetta is wearing a Batman mask for some reason, on top of his usual mask.

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterIsolder74

hilarious homage to The Princess Bride. It was like, the whole story!

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterjojo

"When my husband and I got married, we had "Wuv, Twoo Wuv" engraved on the inside of our wedding bands. (yep, it's true!)"

That is officially the most romantic thing I have ever heard in my life.

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRamey

Princess Bride ftw!! Love, love this post. But seriously, who gives a "sorry about your dead dad" cake? And what the heck is that ROUS actually supposed to be? Besides the stuff nightmares are made of, I mean. *Shudder*

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLaura P.

I am glad you avoided the kissing parts.

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKate

Wrecky cakes cannot stop true love. All they can do is delay it for a while.

So what you're saying is now I can't go swimming for...an hour. Yeah, a good hour...

:) Great post!

I am bowing - BOWING - in your general direction!
This must go in your "Top 10 of All Time" post list.

I'm gonna figure a way to print it out & put it on my office door.

Best movie ever! LOVE this post! yeah, I'm slightly obsessed with that movie. It's sad. I can put the movie on mute and quote the entire thing. That's how many times I've watched it and I NEVER get sick of it.

"Death is pain, highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something".

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLeah

I am constantly amazed at your ability to take totally random cakes and string them together into a hilarious story, and today's was beyond all others. I am in awe of your creativity, and sense of humor, and knowledge of so many movie and tv references, and willingness to make such an effort to meet your fans....yeah, I could keep going. Thanks!

@ Shelley: OMG. I am so glad no one was in the office when I read your story. That was superb. I'll be giggling about that for a while.

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMarnie

This is one of my favorite posts of all time! The Princess Bride and Cakewrecks combined into one? Inconceivable!

BTW, I just watched TPB last night then get up to find this waiting for me this morning... Thank you!

My absolutely favorite movie of all time....and then I read the book and it became my favorite book AND movie of all time! My best friend's daughter grew up wanting to be an ROUS.....mostly because Westley and Inigo were both taken by my son and her brother.....go figure....LOL

Anyway, I digress.....thank you thank you thank you for the tribute!!!!! :) It's Friday and The Princess Bride touches my happy place in a way nothing else can....

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermiss_paper

Thanks Jen for such a great post. My husband and I are actually going as the Dread Pirate Roberts and Buttercup this year for Halloween. We always watch and, like everyone else in the comments, we quote it back and forth to each other all the time.

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterColene

Awesome....multiple agreement on Best. Post. EVER!!
I was wondering how to spend this rainy Friday evening (which happens to be my 22nd wedding anniversary) and now I know exactly what we will watch!

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMichelleP

Anyone else think that the ROUS cake looks more like an Alot?

http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/2010/04/alot-is-better-than-you-at-everything.html for reference.

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJulia

Love it! My brothers and I started quoting the movie from start to finish one day, years ago, while hanging around the kitchen... but our mom chased us out brandishing a spatula before we could finish. We got as far as the fire swamp before she got fed up with us. :)

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMellie

I just watched this movie this morning! I could not believe that was the post today. So random! And by random, I mean AWESOME!

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered Commentercarli

Standing and clapping... or I would be if I weren't at work. Awesome post.

Dig those wuv handles on cake #4!

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBoy George

With so many people who know what's GOOD (extra geek points if you know where that's from) in one place, I just had to share this story:

When attending the wedding of my husband's college roommate and his bride, the pastor began the ceremony by saying (with a straight face, no less), "Mawidge is what bwings us togedder today. Mawidge, that dweam wiffin a dweam." He then paused while the entire audience cracked up, laughing hysterically. He said conversationally, "I've always wanted to do that," and then continued along more or less conventional lines. But I've never forgotten that opening.

That does put a damper on our relationship.

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

I think this is my favorite post of all time. Not because of the wrecks, which are amazingly bad. It's all of the comments. There are people out there that love this movie as much as I do. Inconceivable!

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSallyD

How do these even all exist?

The universe (internet) is an amazing and astounding place if you look for it.

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMaggie

OMG - how long have you been squirreling particular cake photos away to put this together? So brilliant!

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRachael

I don't believe they exist.

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDragonintherain

This is pure awesomeness. I'll take a pass on the ROUS cake, however. Ew.

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBecky

Probably one of my favorite posts ever! Really makes me want to go to your tour and I hope I can make it! And just saw the new book today at work. Gonna wait till I come to see you guys to get my copy. :)

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterfobofobiac

Wow, would I buy any of those cakes "It will take a miracle"

Love this movie, my all time favorite!

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKris M

Best. Post. Ever. How you found so many cakes to fit this theme is inconceivable.

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJessica

Does that ROUS have some kind of deformed mushroom for ears?! Inconceivable!!!

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJennifer
