What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Important Tour Update

Hi Guys!

We've had to do some last-minute re-scheduling for the coming book tour, which means three of our scheduled stops are moving to new cities. We've already contacted the attendees who RSVP'd for the affected cities, so hopefully this isn't too much of a shock for anyone, but just in case here are the shows that have been cancelled:

Montreal

Memphis

New Orleans

In their place, we've now added shows in these three cities:

Ottawa, Ontario (10/29)

Oklahoma City (11/9)

Austin, Texas (11/15 or 11/16)

These changes were not made lightly, and John and I have lost a lot of sleep the past few weeks determining the best way to see as many of you readers as we possibly can. Everyone who RSVP'd for the cancelled shows is getting free bookplates, and based on all the e-mails and feedback we've been getting we think this was the right call to make.

Hit the links for the new cities above to go to each show's Evite page, where you'll find all the details and can RSVP. As with all our stops, there will be a fun show, cupcake contest, free cake, prizes, and lots of laughs.

Thanks for your patience and understanding, everyone, and we'll see some of you soon!

Also, if you haven't RSVP'd for one of our other locations yet, head over to our Tour Page for details and all the links. Your RSVP helps our bakers know how much cake to bring. :)

Jen - Minneapolis/St Paul would love to see you too.. Please, with sprinkles on top?

October 13, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAddie

I am devastated. I didn't RSVP (because who really still does that in this it's-all-about-me day and age?) but I was totally planning to take the day off work and go see y'all in N.O. Boo. May the carrot jockey babies haunt your dreams that night. :(

October 13, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRenee

Oklahoma! Heck yes! I hate driving to that area (I live in Norman), but for you guys, I will make the sacrifice!

October 13, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCassie Z

YES!!!!!!!!! Austin!

October 13, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterzzzzz78759

If you come to Hawaii I'll make you a cake! I wonder how many followers you have out here. I'll have to start asking around...

October 13, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKirstin Latu

I know you have people begging to get a chance to see you on your tour. I just thought that since you added Austin in your schedule; would you consider coming a little further south to the great city of San Antonio? (It's really worth the one hour drive) Please!

October 13, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSallyD

Awww I had just rearranged stuff so that I could go to the Montreal event. Ottawa is a little too far from Vermont to drive. Oh well maybe next time. Best of luck on the tour!

October 13, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterInspectegator

Yahoo!!! Glad you added Ottawa, although I feel (a bit) sorry for the Montreal folks who are missing out. But, heck, it's a weekend. They can always drive 2 hours to see you here :)

October 13, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKrista

Thank you for coming to Austin! I can't wait to see y'all!

October 13, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJ. M.

Please consider the Barnes and Noble in The Arboretum in Austin. It's really, really close to The Cheesecake Factory *wink* *wink*.

October 13, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterzzzzz78759

It fatigues my brain just thinking about how much work it must be to organize a book tour. You're awesome! (And I'd still think you're awesome even if you had cancelled my city.)

October 13, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterzoomom

Wooooooo hooooooo! I saw you last time you were in Austin and it totally made my weekend! Will be there again this year!

October 13, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKelly H.

Nope, sorry, not driving to Ottawa. There are Halloween parties to attend on 10/29. Add me to the minority of Montreal malcontents. Boo.

October 13, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterdisappointed

Got the email, had a sad. It's ok though, it was a middle of the week trip and not really something I should be swinging. Besides, just means I can't deliver my surprise in person, I'll have to ship it too you instead. ^_^

October 13, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterann

Man,, negative karma...(not from me)
mocking

October 13, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermocking

So bummed the New Orleans show is cancelled! I will still buy the book though. Thanks for the laughs.

October 13, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMary

Aw, man, not New Orleans!!! You're gonna miss all the King Cakes!!!

October 13, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSt. Jude

Yeah!!!! So happy you're coming to OKC!!!

October 13, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLindsey

OKC!?!? I wish I could make it!!!

October 13, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda K

No ... New Orleans? But I cleared my schedule. *Sobs*

October 13, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterdemimonde

I'm so excited that you're coming to Ottawa.

I wasn't able to make it to MTL because of prior plans I had for that night. Now I can do both!!!

SO HAPPY!

October 13, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSaraC

While I understand why you switched from Montreal to Ottawa, I'm still a bit peeved. There's no way I can make it.

October 13, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterchristine

Will you be rescheduling the cities you cancelled?

October 13, 2011 | Unregistered Commentercritter42

SO excited you're coming to Ottawa! No one ever thinks of us. It's always Montreal or Toronto, and we get left out in the cold. :(

Just a heads-up; the campus bookstore is a little small, and the college can be a bit of a nightmare to navigate. If you need a friendly guide around, I've known the campus since I was a kid.

Now, do I want to come in my halloween costume, or street clothes? Hmm...

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterEggz

Still no Honolulu?

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterpearl

Add me to the Hawaii contingent! I do hope all is well, having had to make such changes to your schedule.

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterEmika_B

Any chance of you ever coming to visit the UK? I know it is a round trip of a few thousand miles but Scotland would welcome you. Besides, we have deep fried Mars Bars (no, really!)

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJonathan

How come there's no cake picture? I thought this was *Cake* Wrecks.

I kid.

Hawaii and Scotland might be a bit of a challenge; land vehicles have to be heavily modified to be amphibious. What's more, getting out and stretching one's legs en route is really inadvisable. If you run out of gas, you're sunk.

I'm glad you canceled those cities, because I couldn't make any of them. Of course, I probably can't make any of the others, either...

Suppose we fans outside the tour zone organized a 'reverse book tour', where everyone makes a pilgrimage to John & Jen's house. We could all bring cake. Wouldn't that be a scream? [I meant 'scream' in the figurative sense -- you can stop screaming, guys -- it was just an idea. Oy.]

I can see it now -- the neighbors would be all, "What in the name of goodness is going on? Where did all these people come from?" "It's those bloggers, Harriet. You never know what's going to happen when people get on that Internet thing."

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

Ty for loving Austin..some other authors have dissed us as of late for bigger cities. Cannot wait to come!!!!!

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterB

Well, I'm sad we're losing Montreal. It's not so easy to "just drive two hours to get there", especially if we'd planned on coming early/late at work to still be able to attend the event during the day. Plus, Halloween weekend shennanigans. This is a very sad annoucement for Montreal cakewreckers. :(

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGen

I am so very very sad that Memphis has been taken off the list. Boo! I had my cupcake wreck all ready to go.

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterpink_peonies

So bummed about N.O.! I hadn't RSVP'd yet but was planning on going. Oh well.... :(

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCourtney

YAYYYYYYYYY!!! I was going to drive to Montreal (can't make Toronto on a work/school day) but now you are coming here to Ottawa!! So thrilled :)

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRobin

That was nice of you to give the bookplates for those who managed to RSVP and are now disappoint. :) Fingers crossed you will be able to visit our cities in the future!

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterB

@Jonathan Pfft! Deep fried mars bars are NOTHING. Now where I come from, we has Eccles cake, Scouse and are not prejudiced over food stuffs - we deep fry anything over here. Even cakes - it's true!

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterFyrefli

Argh! Jen, I could strangle you guys! I would love to meet you in person and I thought it was bad enough that you'd finally be heading to Canada - only the wrong side - but now to know that you'll be going to my hometown (Ottawa) which I moved from just 2 months ago to come out west to Calgary is so heartbreaking! I guess I'll have to get Mom to go in my place and get me the new book for Christmas. Love you guys anyways, I hope you have fun - and bring really warm jackets for late October in Ottawa!

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJoelle

Awwww, I'm in Memphis and Nov. 9th is my birthday. The kids and I couldn't think of a better way to celebrate. Maybe next time!

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLiz K.

Can you please come to Arizona? Anywhere it is i will drive too! Pretty please? I'll bake a cake!

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterScorp

The Ottawa evite page won't work on my computer. After enabling Javascript, it just loads a blank page. :( Can I view the details anywhere else?

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterlemur

This is pretty disappointing. I was looking forward to your stop in New Orleans. I guess I'll just have to eat all this cake by myself :-(

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAlexis

awww no new orleans :'(
i was extremely excited to go and was hoping to make a cupcake wreck. booohooo!
too bad you can't reschedule the N.O. stop

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterkate

Can't wait to see you guys in Ottawa!!

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterIsabella

I used to live in NOLA and just before then, Memphis, but now live in Cincinnati. So if you had to cancel some, I'm glad it was those, because now I don't feel like I'm "just" missing something. :-P

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLaura E.

Well, now I'm glad I'm studying abroad this semester, this way I won't miss you guys when you come to Montreal next year.. right?!?

October 15, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBeatrice

On your next tour you'll be coming a little closer to Arizona, right? Maybe California or something? Riiiiiight?

I'd looooove to go!! But California is about as far away from Arizona as money/car will allow.... So maybe next time?

October 15, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterHeatherr

Awww, I was going to bring you a giant fried doughnut in the shape of a king cake.;)
