What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

The Day the Spaceship Earth Stood Still

Wow, is it Earth Day already? Hard to believe it's been almost a year since the Epcot Episode.

Yep, for you wreckies who've joined us in the past year, Epcot made its unintentional Cake Wrecks debut in honor of Earth Day, 2009. You can read the original post here, but in a nutshell: I posted a Spaceship Earth cake, and then made the mistake of calling it a Spaceship Earth cake. We then got about fifty billion comments (give or take fifty billion) telling us it was NOT Spaceship Earth, but Epcot. Many also helpfully pointed out that you could tell it was Epcot by the Disney font used on the cakeboard.

Now, as every Disney Geek knows, Epcot is the theme park and Spaceship Earth is the Big Golf Ballâ„¢ - and I am a huge Disney Geek. Plus, and here's the part that was especially painful/hilarious, John and I made the cake.

(Yeah, I know it's not great. That's why I posted it. However, I am one of only two or three people on the planet who've ever even attempted a Spaceship Earth cake. So, you know, I've got that going for me.)

Now, in honor of this auspicious occasion I would like to shower you with Earth and/or Spaceship Earth wrecks.

Erm...

Unfortunately, despite extensive research performed during the commercial breaks for Dancing with the Stars (Go, Niecy!), I couldn't find any.

Still, I feel you deserve some kind of reward for reading this far without any new wreckage. So, here, I found you another Disney icon that's gray and round:

Piglet! What have they done to you?

Wow. Just look at the size of that head! I'm not kidding, that is a huge noggin'! It's a virtual planetoid! It has its own weather system! And it's giving me an excuse to quote Stuart Mackenzie!

Oh, and if you look closely, you can see that he recently swallowed a small globe. Or has a globe-shaped tumor growing out of his shoulder - take your pick. Whichever: Hel-looo! Earth Day tribute!

Mandy P., try to work "like Sputnik: spherical but quite pointy in parts" into as many conversations today as possible. Because the earth needs you, that's why.

Eeyore! I am so sad right now. He's looking even more depressed than usual. Poor guy.

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterThe Boob Nazi

Poor Eeyore!

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterPalila

It looks like Eeyore's resorbed twin or something.

"Oh, look. I've gone too far. He's gonna go home tonight and cry himself to sleep on his huge pillow!"

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTaylor

You'd better stop or he'll be crying himself to sleep tonight on his huge pillow. I can never resist a So I Married An Axe Murderer quote!

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMeredith

"Heed! Down! Now!"

LOVE the Axe Murderer references. :)

and Eeyore... well, he's looking kind of rough these days. Poor thing - at least now he has something to be grumpy about.

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda Mac

Jen - every time I think I couldn't possibly love you more, you do something - like quote "So I Married an Axe Murderer" and make me love you just THAT much more!

Cheers!

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterXOXO

And now we know what it'd look like if Piglet and Eeyore had a baby. Mark my words, Emma will be explaining this to a therapist some day.

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterknitwit

I'm a huge Disney geek too and I can't believe that people think that is Epcot itself. There is an actual ride in there (a particularly good one) and the structure/ the ride is indeed called Spaceship Earth. I too get a bit pet peevish when people make Disney mistakes so I'm glad it's not only me :) I think it's a rather nice cake.

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterNostalgie

Sorry, Jen -- I think that second cake is Eeyore, not Piglet. See the donkey ear? And the donkey tail? But the poor critter looks even more unhappy than usual over being compressed into a little ball of @$$...

Happy Epcot Day! Go plant a golfball!

I wonder how many comments you are going to get telling you it isn't Piglet?

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterDanielle

Did they only have one round pan to work with? Considering an average home baker can make a decent rabbit out of two round pans, I'm stunned. That's all I can say. Stunned. Poor Eeyore.

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTricia L

I think Eeyore actually swallowed Piglet. So sad.

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Oh Eeyore - did nobody warn you of the possible downsides to gastric bypass?

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMegan (Best of Fates)

Eeyore's favorite birthday present was a deflated balloon. I think we have a deflated Eeyore balloon here. Where's Christopher Robin? Eeyone needs you!

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterbassgirl

To me it appears that poor Eeyore is being punched in the face. Is this one of those optical illusions? Very sneaky...

I'm not kidding, that boy's head is like Sputnik; spherical but quite pointy at parts!

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterBudgyrl

Really? Calling it a Spaceship Earth cake was controversial? I thought that was common knowledge. Then again, EPCOT was my favorite park because it was so educational. With all the pavilions closing down and the Disneyfication of educational content growing (Finding Nemo Presents: The Living Seas, complete with holographic projections that scare the crap out of the actual sea creatures), I'm losing my favorite theme park in the world.

Of course, I look at that Eeyore cake and realize how much worse it could be. I'm not melting into a depressed puddle of goo.

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterOtherRobert

Now, how do you get Piglet out of that? Looks like it "may" be Eeyore, or an Alfred Hitchcock profile. You know, those two things are SO similar. lol

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSheila Bennett

and how many of us will say, "looks like epcot" ? in honor of your post one year ago???

those of us that know if a cakewreck has a strange or hard to explain shape, we get lazy and say, "looks like epcot" knowing it looks nothing at all like epcot, but to remind you of that fateful post.

and 'cause we love you !

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterjoyce

The red bit by the tail - is that a... prolapse?!

Anna

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Poor Eeyore! He has saggy boobs!

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJoMama

I'm going to ignore the comments today to avoid seeing how many people don't "get it" and try to correct you that it is not piglet!

Jen and I have the same sense of humor. Intentionally saying the wrong thing when we in fact know what it is.

wv: sanes ~ Last year's EPCOT fiasco is driving all the sanes out of my brain.

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered Commentermimi

No wonder Eeyore is always so sad! People make cakes that look like THAT!

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

HE kind of looks like Fetal Eyore!

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTiffany

The idiotic comments about Spaceship Earth being "Epcot" and "SEE THE FONT MAKES IT SO" is blowing my mind! It would be funny if it weren't so sad. I, too, am a die-hard Disney fan and somewhat in shock at the sheer number of people repeating it...I need a drink...

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda in Dallas

I think your Spaceship Earth cake is pretty damn good to be honest with you. And I also get annoyed when people make Disney mistakes, like calling the Magic Kingdom, Disney World. The whole thing is Disney World! *deep breath*

Also...a So I Married an Ax Murderer reference? Really? One of my favorite movies ever? I need to read this blog way more often...

And Eeyore, there are just no words.

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterThe Wife Icon

Um Jen? Hate to break it to you, but that is EPCOT, I mean Eeyore, not Piglet. I know because I am a huge Disney fan.
P.S. Tell me you and John did not make that one too...

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterfranticallysimple

Tiffany,

"Fetal Eeyore"

Awesome!

Oh my gosh, Jen - you're a Neicy fan! Now I love you even more!

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKaren Kraft

Clarise, it looks like it's Piglet wearing Eeyore skin.

Here in Austin, TX, Eeyore's birthday party will be held in 2 days! Old hippies, young hippies, costumes, silver man, Leslie (cross dresser who ran for mayor and came in 3rd), drum circle, all sorts of craziness. 47th year and proceeds got to charities. Happy Birthday, Eeyore!

I never got to go on the original 'Living Seas'. They remade it just before I went for the 1st time. I was as sad as Eeyore.

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterNancy

It's not Piglet and it's not Eeyore. It's there love child, Pigyore!!! And he is ppppppppissed!

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterReceptionist Row

Well, I love the Epcot/Spaceship Earth comments and ongoing silliness. Thanks for being such a good sport about it all!

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterRebecca F.

If only you had a triangle decorating tip! From what I see on the net frosting only comes out of tips in a circular fashion. (Damn you physics!)
Or you can stamp out 100s of triangles in some white fondant.
I challenge you to make another one for next earth day, since you seem to think this one is a "wreck." I rather quite like it, to be honest.

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKenny Kup-Kakesters

Poor Eeyore. No wonder he always looks sad. He gets no respect.

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterangieruns.com

Thank you so much for the So I married an ax Murderer quotes this morning! One of my favorites and now I will be thinking of it on this very special Earth Day:-)

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Um... hmmmm... yep, no words.

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterGina

I watched that whole Epcot episode go down last year. I couldn't believe how many people felt the need to correct you...when they didn't know what they were talking about!! I am a native Central Floridian/Disney buff, and it was driving me crazy.

Love today's post! Can't wait to see how many people feel the need to correct your intentional mislabeling (is that a word?). Cheers!

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterRobin

But Jen - you did find an Earth wreck. Or what was "Happy irthday" supposed to stand for? ;)

wv: sabile. Poor Eeyore is feeling very very sabile today.

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterViiriäinen

Yes, I know it's Eeyore, not Piglet, and I got that (and he's a very sad-looking, disfigured Eeyore, at that). What I really loved was Jen's VERY low key homage to "Caddyshack" - LOVE IT!!! I'm a huge "Caddyshack" fan, and any quote from Bill Murray's character (or any other, for that matter) is FABULOUS, in my book.

Keep up the awesome work, Jen. You rock!

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Oh NOOOOOOOO! Eeyore has elephantitis!

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

I stopped at Kenny-Kup's comment because I totally think you should try EPC--er--Spaceship Earth again.

In fact, I really really REALLY want you to try it again. You can't go wrong, really. If it's great, you will have succeeded and if it sucks it's another fabulous wreck that succeeds just as much.

I think you should do Spaceship Earth at night so you can do more colors than gray!

...Not that you're necessarily going to do it.

But it would be so KEWL!

WV: skies...wow, it's actually a word. How boring.

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterE.M. Green

Poor Eeyore. Looks like someone stole his stuffing :(

On the other hand, that Epcot/Spaceship Earth cake doesn't look too bad!

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterksaldria

In retrospect though, aren't you glad for Great Epcot Fiasco '09?

It certainly works to diffuse any tension when people start getting too snippy about what's right and wrong here. Just say "The Epcot Threat Level is orange!" and everyone laughs :)

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLaurenH

Ahaha! Now I'll be singing along in my head with The Bay City Rollers all day long, and looking into starting the Garth Brooks juice diet.

"S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y...Night!"

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterjj

"'Epcot' is my favorite ride in 'Disney'"

seriously, SSE (shorthand) is my favorite building in the universe, and EPCOT is my favorite place on earth, even though it has been watered down a bit over the past 15+ years. It bothers me that people are so clueless--or, really, just don't care. And yet they INSIST they are correct about being COMPLETELY wrong. (Tea Partiers anyone? Can we do politics here? ;)

Jen - I love your blog; a nighttime SSE cake would be AWESOME - a mix of orange & purple fading towards dark blue at the top. That would be neat!

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterBrian

Hey, that's not Piglet. It's Eeyore. You can tell by the...Oh, I see what you did there. Well played, Jen. Well played. :)

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

Poor Eeyore. I keep staring at him with my eyes crossed, like Magic Eye, thinking that maybe he'll start looking like himself instead of the reject from the Disney Beach Ball Factory that he is.

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterthisamericantourist

Poor Eeyore!! That epcot ball looks pretty good!

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAmy
