The Day the Spaceship Earth Stood Still
Wow, is it Earth Day already? Hard to believe it's been almost a year since the Epcot Episode.
Yep, for you wreckies who've joined us in the past year, Epcot made its unintentional Cake Wrecks debut in honor of Earth Day, 2009. You can read the original post here, but in a nutshell: I posted a Spaceship Earth cake, and then made the mistake of calling it a Spaceship Earth cake. We then got about fifty billion comments (give or take fifty billion) telling us it was NOT Spaceship Earth, but Epcot. Many also helpfully pointed out that you could tell it was Epcot by the Disney font used on the cakeboard.
Now, as every Disney Geek knows, Epcot is the theme park and Spaceship Earth is the Big Golf Ballâ„¢ - and I am a huge Disney Geek. Plus, and here's the part that was especially painful/hilarious, John and I made the cake.
(Yeah, I know it's not great. That's why I posted it. However, I am one of only two or three people on the planet who've ever even attempted a Spaceship Earth cake. So, you know, I've got that going for me.)
Now, in honor of this auspicious occasion I would like to shower you with Earth and/or Spaceship Earth wrecks.
Erm...
Unfortunately, despite extensive research performed during the commercial breaks for Dancing with the Stars (Go, Niecy!), I couldn't find any.
Still, I feel you deserve some kind of reward for reading this far without any new wreckage. So, here, I found you another Disney icon that's gray and round:
Wow. Just look at the size of that head! I'm not kidding, that is a huge noggin'! It's a virtual planetoid! It has its own weather system! And it's giving me an excuse to quote Stuart Mackenzie!
Oh, and if you look closely, you can see that he recently swallowed a small globe. Or has a globe-shaped tumor growing out of his shoulder - take your pick. Whichever: Hel-looo! Earth Day tribute!
Mandy P., try to work "like Sputnik: spherical but quite pointy in parts" into as many conversations today as possible. Because the earth needs you, that's why.

LOL - Now we know why Eeyore is positively pessimistic!
I'm laughing SO hard at some of these comments. If there had been coffee in my mouth I would have spit it all over my monitor at Nancy's comment:
"Clarise, it looks like it's Piglet wearing Eeyore skin."
OMG. Because every time I see/hear the name Clarise it's always in HIS voice.
I bet he cries himself to sleep at night on his huge pillow!
Hee hee... my favorite movie.`
Maybe we should call this sad offspring of Eeyore and Piglet "Eyelet"?
I asked My 5 year old if that was Eeyore and she said that she didn't know what that was but it wasn't Eeyore!
Eeyore's melted in a pool of tears. Or is it in my verif word alkyal.
this is what would happen if piglet and eeyore made an eeylet. NO CROSSING BREEDS!!
Happy Epcot Day!
LOL, oh my god. I think Eeyore is actually in the process of eating Piglet. *screams in terror*
I like the spaceship earth cake! How did you put it together? 2 semicircular cakes?
To me, the Eeyore cake looks like someone frosted a baseball mitt...
We are major Disney geeks in this family, and my husband is big on word plays. Thanks to him, we now call it Spacious Berth instead of Spaceship Earth!
So Eeyore ate Epcot? (ducks and runs;)
A question about the Spaceship Earth cake, how the hell do you get gray icing?
Happy Earfdae everyone:)
Jen, It is so spectacular that you guys made the SSE cake. I can't imagine your combined chagrin and hilarity as you received and approved all of those comments. HAHAHAHAHA!!
Oh, btw, my best friend from high school came over a couple weeks ago and laughed until he cried reading your book (my livingroom coffee table selection) while I was getting ready. :D
I so love your sense of humor.
Blessings.
L~
Wow, look at the size of that goitre...poor Eeyore....
Look at the gaping wound on the side of young Jay Leno! Someone, he needs stitches, STAT!
That is Jay Leno, right?
Nothing else could have that distinctive double chin.
Poor Jay. He looks so (greyish) blue! Maybe he would like a trip to Epcot?
Happy Eeyorth day Jen and John!
My first thought upon seeing that cake was: "On no account should you allow a Vogon to read poetry to you..."
Poor Eeyore...he's become one of the bad-tempered, bureaucratic, officious and callous Vogons from H2G2.
He almost looks like a Picasso- the blue period!
Huh? The jokes are going clear over my head. Never been to Disney World, don't plan to, but when I google on Epcot Center, images come up that look remarkably like the cake above. So nice job!
(I'm a Studio Ghibli fan, so other than the fact that Disney distributes their films in the U.S., I couldn't care less about Disney. I'm still trying to wrap my mind around rabid Disney fanhood, which to me, as one of the unenlightened, seems like rabid loyalty to McDonald's or Microsoft, I'm afraid.)
I too am a Disney fan! I am also a former cast member. I loved working there...it was like playing each day. Jen, I think your version of SSE is very well done. If you do decide to recreate it, I'm going to challenge you to add the hand with the wand and the EPCOT title that now accompanies SSE. Can't wait to see it.
Love the blog, rarely comment but had to say "Yay!" for the A. Murderer movie quotes - that made my day. And I am glad to see so many other people love that movie too - most of my friends have no idea what I am talking about when I refer to it.
"Light a match!"
"Oh, I hated the Colonel with his wee *beady* eyes, and that smug look on his face. Oh, you're gonna buy my chicken! Ohhhhh!"
I still think that you should have had a cake decorating contest in honor of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. Just because you would have had an avalanche of submissions is no reason not to challenge your readers. Hmph.
What happened to his hooves?!
I actually like the Spaceship Earth cake - you've already mastered the spherical cake; I would LOVE to see you attempt an actual globe!
That isn't Piglet! It's the result of a crazy night of tequila that Piglet, Eeyore and Dumbo aren't willing to talk about.
Because a kid's birthday is not complete without a cake of Eeyore melting due to radioactive waste.
That's not Eeyore, that's Spaceship Earth! See, you can tell by the Disney font in the upper left...
- Jeff
I'm a huge Disney geek, too, so I know your frustration!!
Oh, and poor Eeyore! My daughter was a little scared of Eeyore on our last trip (who knows why an 18-month-old is scared of certain things... he's actually one of my favorites) so I can't let her see this or she'll never get NEAR him ever again!!
I love your blog Jen. It makes me smile every day (even Saturday, because I just read Friday's again :)
As a former Disney cast member, I must tell you that you are correct in calling it Spaceship Earth. However, the "Disney" font is Mickey's handwriting. FYI.
I remembered that post, and remember being shocked at how many people (1) didn't know that Spaceship Earth *IS* the Epcot icon and, (2) chose to high handedly correct you without at least googling the reference first.
I heart Epcot. Now I am going to have to try my hand at one of these babies. . . .
I don't think its Eeyore-I think its ferdinand the bull who only wanted to smell the flowers
Happy Birthday, to you, Emma!
Here is a depressing rendition of the most clinically depressed and paranoid character ever created in children's literature.
Let's Party!
At his point I believe poor Eyore is quoting the Wicked Witch of the West "I'm melting, melting. . . "
Just a mixed movie metaphor
Thanks for making me laugh
That first one is really supposed to be Spaceship Earth at Epcot.
Whew! Good to get that out of my system.
The Eeyore cake is actually a great tie-in with the cakes from the last two days - I dimly recall that the greeting presented to Eeyore on his birthday by his friends Pooh, Rabbit, Owl and Piglet read "Hippy Pappy Bthuthday." Maybe the best segue' ever!
You're all wrong. That is not EPCOT. That is not Spaceship Earth. That is Duff Killigan's giant golfball from his previously foiled evil plan. Have none of you other Orlando natives done the Kim Possible missions?
My beloved Eeyore was reduced to THIS?!?! Oh, the shame!
"It doesn't matter. No one is looking at me anyway."
I had to comment, just to get in on the Ax Murderer quote action: "Look at the size of that boy's head. It's like an orange on a toothpick." "HEAD, MOVE!"
Eeyore meets Puck meets Miss Piggy...er, um...what?! Wait, and he is *smiling*?? He really shouldn't buy those anti-depressants from spammers.
Oh, people, that IS Piglet. He was described as a baby pig in WINNIE-THE-POOH, which was published in 1926. The pig is now in his mid-80s. Let's see how YOU look when you're over 80!
LOL Jen and John, I love how you turned that whole episode into such a wonderful running joke. My husband and I even joke sometimes now about "EPCOT level orange!" We will be going to Disney World for the first time in June and you can bet I'm taking a picture with Spaceship Earth just for you. :)
And all I can say about the that cake is, no wonder Eeyore feels so unloved.
DaysieD: I hope you're kidding; the gigantic mickey arm and wand that were next to SSE were dismantled several years ago. Thankfully!
but that wand would turn this beautifule SSE cake into a cakeWRECK, for sure.
It definitely looks like Piglet and Eeyore's "love" child...and I'm not kidding, it's like an orange on a toothpick!
I'm going to go out on a limb and say actually think this one is clever. And I'd rather see this than a plastic gimmick any day. So there.
*sigh*
Bet that's how it felt after the billionth epcotsode & a gallon of ice cream comfort.
wv: worsor -- oh, come on security, you're not even trying here. 'swear the 'bot zombies and script kiddies these days ....
I think we - as Wrekkies - need to petition for a Cake Wreck day at DW. Ahhh, I have "It's a Small World" stuck in my head already :D
Spaceship Earth Day may have been one of the funniest CW days ever! (except, It was really annoying at the time...) I'm glad we can all look back and have a giggle about it.
PS my captcha word today is "dejectem" <--sounds appropriate.
Uhhh...
Uhhh...
(that's all I can say looking at this wrecky Eeyore!)
