What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

All Hallow's Wrecks

Henchpersons, it's the final week before Halloween. And you know what that means, right? [rubbing hands together gleefully] Ooooh, yes. It means: this week is gonna be GOOD.

Sorry, did I say "good?" 'Cuz I meant "spooy."

You're gonna love it, though. I mean, c'mon, when else will your cupcakes literally give you the finger?

Or will Oompa Loompa glitter skeletons tap-dance across your sheet cake?

Or - OR - will you find an obscure Addams' Family reference scrawled on a huge pile of airbrushed icing?

Nice save. Really.

And sometimes, if you're lucky, you'll even see stuff like this:

"Don't scream 'til you see the egg-whites of their eyes, boys."

And so, my dear Wreckies, enjoy this week. Embrace it. Savor it.

Oh, and:

Hey Samantha R., Stephanie M., Cindy S., Melaina V., Emily D., & Whitney N., true story: my folks used to call me Cousin Itt behind my back.

I'm guessing 'cuz that's where the resemblance was strongest.

UPDATE: The "Cousin Itt" Epcot threat level is currently at: ORANGE. Do not panic; this is only a drill. (Plus I fixed my typo.) Carry on.

Well...I'm scared :o

I like how the spooy cookie cake had the fingers as well. Must of been the 'new' thing.

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterT.T.

I actually LIKE the Oompa Loompa glitter skeletons. Except for their disproportionate limbs vs giant heads, they're not a bad idea. They were just executed badly.

Which pretty much describes the whole idea of a Cake Wreck.

Well done, Amy. Have some more coffee.

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

Plus, they spelled "Cousin ITT" wrong.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cousin_Itt

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

they called me cousin it too. my hair is the wrong color, but there is definitely the right amount.

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterErin

Until I discovered Cake Wrecks, I was really not into Halloween. Now I look forward to all the wacky/weird/wonky cakes!

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterStephanie

The skeletons came soooo close. All they needed was the lower half of their limbs, hands/feet, and rib cages and the would have been there. But I guess complete bodies is just too much to ask of wreckorators.

Captcha: derrio. I derrio to eat that Cousin Itt cake.

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterInaya

The baby skeletons are making me sad:(
I think I'll go do some hounting-that always cheers me up.

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSuBee

That ghost looks like it just crapped its pants.

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterThe Boob Nazi

Love the cakes....

And a note on the cupcakes....$.99!!!! Those same cupcakes in my store (yes, I'm a grocery store cake decorator) sell for $1.29 each! But I always put 2 or 3 fingers on them. Don't want the kiddies to think they are getting flipped off....lol.

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterColleen

Will cousin Itt be the EPCOT of the day?

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterBin

Halloween wrecks are my favorite "genre". Keep 'em coming, pretty please!

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Hah! That Cousin It cake...brings back memories. Of how my parents either said I had Hermione hair or was a direct relative of Cousin It...

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterThe Mocha Monster

Spooy could be our new CCC word.

"It's a cupcake cake, Spooy!"

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterDonna M.

Regardless of the Cousin Itt thing, why would somebody want to wish someone else a "safe" Halloween?

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

That egg white cake has a finger under its nose?
How come?

mocking

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Since when do ghosts have mustaches?!

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterNala

Maybe the Cousin Itt situation will just be our Monday morning EPCOT drill, not the real thing- the last true EPCOT was on a Tuesday. You never know when a comment-section threatening EPCOT will emerge, though. I just love being able to use code talk. EPCOT EPCOT EPCOT. And some of us stayed up waaaaay too late more than once this weekend celebrating certain baseball teams.

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMindy

Donna M you are sooo right!!
CCC... Spooy.

WV: uperpo The Cousin Itt cake looks like a pile of uperpo.

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterElizabeth C.

I don't know. I kind of love the idea of "zombies giving you the finger" cupcakes, and those eyeballs are rockin'!

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterElizabeth

It's as I always say: There's nothing like a good, spooy, Happy Hounting to make MY Halloween better!

WV - deadedc: Just way too appropriately funny for this thread, really...

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterBADKarma!

Oh, those are fingers on 'spooy'. I just assumed they were asparagus spears. I agree that 'spooy' is the perfect CCC word.

Please tell me the Cousin It / ITT (gotta cover the bases) cake has actual cake in it somewhere. 'Happy Hallowees'?

The last one reminds me of Billy Crystal in 'Analyze This': "Oh, ay. Ay, oh." The poor wreckerator must have been hounted by indecision for like, 20 minutes.

wv: triangst.

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

The uh, "ghost" looks eerily like Santa Claus!

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSomewhere In The Sun

The Spooy cookie is done in such Halloween-like colors...

Is the Boo!! underneath the ghost CCC someone else's commentary on the execution/fried egg eyes?

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterDurable Goods

well, they ARE scary....but not the way they were intended!

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterjo

Not only are the cupcakes giving the finger, they're giving the evil eye :-D

wv propumb: The wreckers had to prop-umb those fingers juuuust right.

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

@Colleen
maybe monster peace signs? (two fingers)

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I also agree that spooy is the new CCC sound effect. Or is that sound affect? I don't want an EPCOT in my comment...

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterRaisa

I must say that i think that mass of airbrushed icing is supposed to be cousin it. Just saying.

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Well, I'm traumatized for life, anyway.

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterOldish Lady

Hi cakepeople! I read this blog every day, along with too many others of the same judge-and-mock-others-from-the-safety-of-my-laptop-in-Canada ilk. I lost one of my favourites (photoshopdisasters) to the evils of nonfunny writing, poor grammar and stupid ads in every blank space recently. I just wanted to say thanks to Jen and Jon for keeping the awesomeness alive!

Wreck on.

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLolabel

Aawwww i should have known better.

I should have known better than to visit Cakewrecks when i still have my kidney stone.

Now im in PAIN! But laughing so much! Oompas-loompas skellies tap-dancing...the image..its too strong to resist!

Thanks?!!

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterVinie

I really (seriously) had no idea that 'it' was Itt. You learn something new every day.

(love the Epcot references! "code orange" ha!!)

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle

What is the proper context for using Spooy?

Try using it as if you were Aunt Minnie Pearl hog-calling, an easily recognizable signal to fellow shoppers that unbearably bizarre CCC has been sighted in a busy supermarket.

My capcha is "stend". I'll stend right here while you review my comment.

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCrystal

With halloween, how can you tell wrecks from non-wrecks?

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Is that a "Ghost of a Storm Trooper" cake?

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

It isn't midnight yet on the left coast, but it appears that today's EPCOT was only a drill. (That's what dentists say, too.)

'Spooy' sounds sort of like 'spew', so it works on that level, but there's something about the 't' in patooie. I suppose time will tell if one is favored.

October 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

Well . . . maybe the "Spooy" cake was made by/for a Babylon 5 fan? Maybe? No?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spoo

After years of speculation from Babylon 5 fans, Straczynski finally offered an extensive explanation of the origins and nature of spoo. He said spoo are tiny, pasty, mealworm-like creatures that travel slowly in herds. Their main behavior is sighing, which "can reportedly induce unparalleled bouts of depression" in other creatures. They are raised on ranches and harvested through "whacking". Spoo are regarded with contempt by most species in Babylon 5; they "are the only creatures of which the Interstellar Animal Rights Protection League says, simply, 'Kill 'em.'" Despite this, they are "generally considered the most delicious food in all of known space".

I could swear that CCC..blech.. looked like a possessed owl instead of a ghost. The last cake had me giggling. Happy Hounting indeed. Now if I only knew what hounting was I would do it that or yell spooy at my husband. Lol.. I can't help the giggles right now.

October 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterArlene

Until I read the disclaimer, I thought that cake said "Lovin' It," and was feeling lacking in my geek cred because I couldn't think of any time when the Addams Family did a catchphrase crossover with McDonalds.

October 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterDaisy

Nothing is better on spooy Halloween night than a good hounting.

October 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterStacy Q

i love halloween because of cake wrecks. this time of the year i get to be at my creative side. decorating cupcakes for little children. and you just gave me a new idea on my next scare'em cupcakes.

October 26, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterpinky black

meh, 'spooy' is nothing fancy.
it is an English word missing one single letter between the second 'o' and 'y'.
guess it now?
yup.
'k'

:)))

placing Cousin Itt on a cake, though is a neat idea for any non-professional baker as well.

cheers from Hungary ;)

October 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSzélsőFa

I always get great new ideas while visiting your site. Keep up the good work.

October 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKlaus Janssen

Perhaps we could have "Spooy" as a warning code for future posts. Like those which are particularly spew-worthy and should not be seen with a mouthful of beverage (you would think we would learn, but apparently not). Jen could you enter a flashing "Spooy Alert" to warn us before we scroll down?

October 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTricia L

Those are some great cake images... Love the blog!

October 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTom

I'm not so sure that it actually is, but the "non-cake" looks an awful lot like chak-chak, a Tatar desert that is crazy-good.

WV: hochspit...not going there.

October 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJen

My husband is giggling like a little girl over the tap dancing Oompa Loompa glitter skeletons. I'm going to try to work 'spooy' into casual conversation.

October 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSif

I love how people think they are so smart commenting on Jen's "misspelling" of Cousin Itt.
Give our favorite geek a little credit, eh?

October 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Tap dancing skeletons?!?!? Ok, who remembers Telefrancais?! Les Squelettes? "Nous nous appelons Les Squelettes". Anyone? Canadians born in the early eighties? *crickets chirping*. Ok, um, never mind.

October 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAng

Epcot threat level....hehehe good stuff there...
