What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sweet, Sweet Irony

Sure, simple cake goofs and misspellings are fairly common. Sometimes they just result in more hilarity than usual.

And by "you can do it," we mean we can't.

Well, somebody's record of "excellance" just got set back to zero.

What's more ironic than misspelling a boast of excellence?

How about misspelling your correction of a misspelling?

Ouch. Nothin' like messing up a good rant over the fact that someone else messed up, is there? (And yes, I *do* know that from personal experience. Heh.)

Taking team unity to a whooole new level.

Wow . . . I mean, . . . wow. Did someone REALLY think that a breast cancer ribbon on a team cake was appropriate? I couldn't even READ the team name! Words fail me . . . wow.

ExcellAnce? I am so not surprised by this one. Pretty writing, though!

Hopefully, L-i-z-z-i-e was well amused by the explanation provided on top of her cake!

Spelling word of the day: c-h-e-c-k as in always check your work before the customer sees the end product!

September 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterVickie

OK, the whole time I am trying to decipher the name of the team in the first cake. What do all those circles and lines say?

Yet, my 2 favorites are cake #2, which is "xcellantly" made. When you say it out loud it has a french sound to it! Magnifique! And I love cake #4! I don't know what's better, the omission of the plural s or the capitalization of the P in the middle, and hence, the resultant "Pion" ! It's a toss-up! :-)

September 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Well at least L-I-Z-Z-I-E got her sprinkles!

September 10, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterquoththeraven929

The breast cancer ribbon on the team cake would be appropriate if team Unwhatever had won some sort of fund-raising contest.

Maybe if we were able to read the rest of the cake, we'd know.

September 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJasini

As always, hilarious... but even funnier because Queen's 'We are the champions' was on the radio as I was reading it... hahahahahaha!

September 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJulie

The last one looks like a cat unraveled several balls of yarn on it.

September 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMiranda

It's a measure of how long I've been looking at CakeWrecks that it took me a while to find the problem with the first cake. No scary clowns, no pregnant bellies, not even any odd, poo-colored mounds - the total lack of spacing barely registers with me anymore.

Vickie - I wonder if the team was fundraising for breast cancer research? That would explain the ribbon.

"We Are the Champion"

We are Borg. Resistance is futile.

September 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

That last one is just so incredibly half assed (quarter assed?) it makes me weep sugary tears.

Angie (from over at www.HalfAssedKitchen.com)

September 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHalf Assed Kitchen

@Martin - Yeah I know what you mean. No poo. No balloons that look like sperm. No plastic men on questionable bear skin rugs. And no naked mohawk baby carrot jockeys.
I think we've been desensitized to wreckiness unless it's really spectacularly wrecky.

September 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLeslie

They so ARE the Champion!

September 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNind-Mumbing

yes, the letter spacing is fugged up (obvious lack of planning), but that breast cancer ribbon is wonky too.

however, as a breast cancer survivor, i will assume their hearts are in the right place.

GO team whatever!

misspellings? no excuse. zero tolerence. i mean, tolerance. haha

It took me a minute to come with "you can do it" I thought it said,
"You can die" which brought a whole other level of wreckiness to the cake.

WV: Flock - wow another real word. That's twice in one week!

#1 "Okay, must spell 'congratulations' correctly, or this thing will end up on that damn wrecks website. C-o-n-g-r-a-t-u, so far, so good, l-a-t-i, AAAAAHHHHHHH" *falling off edge of cliff*

#2 "Okay, must spell 'congratulations' correctly, or this thing will end up on that damn wrecks website. C-o-n-g-r-a-t-u-l-a-t-i-o-n-s. Hey, that wasn't so bad. Now, e-x-s-e-l -- no, wait a minute. E-x-s-c-e -- crap. E-x-c-e-l-a -- no -- e-x-c-e-l-l-a-n-s - damn. E-x-c-e-l-l-a-n-c-e. There, got it! Ha! They won't get MY cake this time!"

September 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCake_or_Death

If you click cake one, you get a MUCH bigger version, and after staring at that one and doing a wreck-writing analysis it looks like the team name is written "Unravelet."

This makes the cake even more wrecky, as google reveals there IS a "Team Unraveled" group that participated in a 3-day, 60-mile walk for breast cancer research funding event.

September 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I had assumed that the breast-cancer-ribbon cake was to celebrate a team who had done one of the breast-cancer walks. I just don't understand why the ribbon couldn't have been made smaller so that the words could have fit on the cake.

WV: metra -- Oh, now I get it, they were given metrac measurements for the cake, and couldn't remember how to do the conversion to imperial.

September 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterS3XinthePantry

Does that say "somewhere" or "somewhore"?

September 10, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterdeckardcanine

I love the new look, Cake Wrecks!

...why don't cake places have dictionaries? Then again, you wouldn't be able to make me laugh with these horrors.

September 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I can understand on a level #3 wanting to explain why this person's name was not spelled correctly, but it annoys me when it is assumed that perfect grammar and spelling equals a non food service related position. Or the only reason you are working in a food service position is because you aren't intelligent enough to work in a better position. My husband is a physicist and can't spell worth a damn.

September 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterM.C.

I think those things sticking out of the cake are called "excellances."

That last one looks like a throw rug, which may explains why I want to stomp all over it.

If you do the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer 5K, you can register as a team, so first cake makes sense, as a concept, not legibility.

September 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMamaX5

The Excellance cake looks like it was made by the same people that did the "Under Neat That" cake way at the beginning.

I'm glad to see some consistancy there.

September 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterFlemmily

Maybe it's Champion University? Like Marshall saying "We are Marshall!"

Let's give the benefit of the doubt people! (but not really)

September 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTaylor (My Older Brothers)

Love these! :-) The name of the team on that first one is clearly "Urine valet".

And if you don't know what that is, I"m not gonna-- OH COME ON! For heaven's sake, a urine valet is a person who carries the urine! Do I have to explain EVERYTHING??? Lily

September 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I love the moody candlelight of the "excellance" cake.

September 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

Could the rant have included a Freudian slip, "some*whore*" else? I'm just asking???

Clearly, I have way too much time on my hands, but have just googled "team unraveled", they are a Three Day Breast Cancer team that walked 60 miles in San Franciso, it seems that Team Unraveled Did Do It!

September 10, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterjennifer

Is it just me, or was Barrett "conglatuated"?

September 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I actually sent the "Excellance" one but maybe someone else submitted it too. It's just highly ironic because the cake was for the 20th anniversary party of the college I work for which is an honors college, yet none of the staff, faculty, or honors students noticed the misspelling until after the night was over and this picture was in the school paper. Makes for a good story though. ;)

September 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCowgirl@Heart

Spelled it over the phone and they still messed up. Wow.

September 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

Oh Cake Wrecks, I love you. Nothing like the "excellance" of others to make one feel all is right in the world.

September 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAbsolutely Small

It just *could* be that the pink ribbon cake is trying to say "Team Unrivaled," but it came out as "Team Unraveld."

Or some such of a thing....couldn't it just?

As for the " 12" MESSAGE COOKIE," I think we should all appreciate the fact that with this one, someone is getting quite a deal~~ there are two messages for the price of one (one on the cookie itself, and one on the plastic cookie cover).

Perhaps they should have labeled it, " 12" MESSAGE COOKIE with FREE BONUS MESSAGE!"

=^ee^=

Wow. That is a freaky coincidence. My mom is having a double mastectomy right now. Yes now. :(
(And no I'm not complaining about the post - it is wonderful.)
I would like to know what the team name is. And yes, I am sure it is for some endurance fund raising event and entirely appropriate.

As always, thanks for the laughs.
And I'm sorry I missed you at Dragon Con. I didn't get to come Monday after all. Next year I will be there for the whole thing. :)

Hmm...nothing is worse then writing on a cake and halfway through having a brain fart...I especcially like that cookie cake rant! I wish I could get away with things like that!

September 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJen

I'm 95% sure that the "excellance" cake was made for the 20th anniversary of the Barrett Honors College at Arizona State University. Delicious delicious irony.

September 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTransplantedPotato

the words are running off the first two cakes!

p.s. Is the scarcity of comments an indication that I was not the only one having trouble commenting? I had to refresh 3 times to get a WV image on my first comment. I know I am asking for too much for it to work smoothly on my blackberry. I am having trouble with it loading very slowly and locking up my phone for 5 minutes. :(

A pink ribbon on a cake for a breast cancer fund-raising team most certainly IS appropriate! If it isn't, then many of us that wear that pink ribbon in support shouldn't be doing it either.

September 10, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterholly

Team Unraveled CERTAINLY deserves a breast cancer ribbon, Vickie!! Most CERTAINLY appropriate! Look 'em up!

September 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Yanno, poor spelling doesn't always mean low intelligence, some people are just poor spellers. My husband can tabulate numbers like you wouldn't believe, eyeball a space and give a square footage number that might be an inch off, and create new 'thingamajigs' to fill a need. But his spelling is bad. I on the other hand always see wrong spelling and abused apostrophes, but anything numerical eludes me.

September 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJustMe

I'm so glad of all the explanations of the name on the first cake, cause all I could see was Unruuulet.

WV: mopla - once again I've had to mopla-tte off my monitor after reading this blog.

Maybe the "Excellance" wreckorator is from the part of the country where the good folks say Am-buu-laance" and he/she sounded it out.
