What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

When Mickey Mouse Turns Into A Real Bozo

Jessie ordered this cute kitty design from her bakery's book:

Her bakery ran out of the printed paper, though, and then I guess also people who know how to decorate cakes:

Yowch. And I don't think that candle placement is helping any, Jessie. Do you have any large house plants instead? Maybe a pinata or two?

Shannon ordered a Minecraft sheet cake, which usually looks something like this:

Instead, she got what appears to be an Oscar-the-Grouch skin carpet on a dirty tile floor:

Double "yowch."

And finally, Jay ordered a true classic: a Mickey Mouse cake like this:

Somehow I think Jay's baker heard "Bozo the Clown," though:

...because THIS IS UNCANNY:

Thanks to Jessie W., Shannon M., & Jay F. for that case of "mouse-taken" identity.

(Yes that pun was tortured and I'm not even sorry.)

Are these bakers TRYING to get on cake wrecks?!

The candle placement on the first one is to hide the fact that the face is not correctly oriented to the ears. The candles are helping, really.

The Minecraft cake base makes me think of a grungy light up disco floor after dollar beer night...

"Oscar-the-Grouch skin carpet" FTW! To be honest, I'd almost prefer it to the ordered cake.

"That's a Bozo No No!"

Considering that these seem to be children's cakes, I think the last one isn't too bad, provided it wasn't that expensive. I think a small child would just see Mickey Mouse and be happy with it, at least. The first two though, are even worse for that reason. Those kids had to have been disappointed if they were told they were getting a kitty cake or Minecraft cake and instead got something that didn't even remotely resemble them.

Is that Mickey Mouse one made out of cupcakes? Might explain why the shape is so wonky.

It's not as if these people brought in some wild thing from a magazine or McGreevy Cakes. They are out of the baker's own catalogue, for goodness sake! As Mindy said, you'd be forgiven for thinking this was a ploy to get on this site.

Ugh! The Minecraft one is making my skin crawl! WTF happened there?!

In fairness to the third baker, that's a cupcake cake, so it was never going to end well.

Well, it’s obvious where they went wrong with the Mickey. That’s a cupcake cake. Pitooee!

I think the Oscar-the-Grouch skin carpet on a dirty tile floor is pretty close to what it was supposed to be, the Oscar-the-Grouch skin carpet on a dirty tile floor.

There is a face on the Oscar the grouch skin. It's above the d in birthday and looks like the face on Mars.

The Minecraft one looks like an Oregon tile roof.
