What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets In Black & White

It's a Black Tie Affair on Sweets this week!

(By Clara's Designer Cakes)

Formal, dramatic, goes-with-everything - plus there's nothing better than black-and-white for showing off amazing textures:

(By Zoe's Fancy Cakes)

Like this brush embroidery!

Silhouettes are extra stunning in black and white:

And with lines this perfect, less really IS more.

This looks like a whimsical pop-up book come to life:

(By Rachelles)

Isn't it great? I love the layers!

Although the geek in me wants to see one with a blue phone booth. :D

These lines of handwritten script add a romantic, vintage feel:

Just as romantic, but with extra bold color-blocking:

(By Lanre Buttercream)

I like the delicate trim on the top tier, and that string of pearls really softens the look.

Of course we can't talk black and white cakes without including one of the biggest new wedding trends:

(By Deliciously Decadent)

Chalkboard cakes!

Such a fun look, and perfect for incorporating a favorite phrase or song lyric.

Check out the darling bunny and fawn silhouettes on this bottom tier:

(By Rosalind Miller Cakes)

So sweet! Combined with the dripping floral vines it has a surprisingly light, spring-time feel to it.

You don't see many intricate string work cakes in the U.S. anymore; it's just too fragile and time-consuming, and if you live anywhere with humidity? Fuggitaboutit.

Which is why THIS is so gosh-darn impressive:

(By Geraldine's Creative Cutters)

If you've never seen a baker do string work, mosey on over to Youtube and marvel at the insane amount of time and talent this cake required.

And finally, more string work, plus intricate piping, hand-painting, and pure prettiness:

(By Gerardo's Italian Bakery)

That lace! That glorious lace! Just stunning.

Happy Sunday, everyone!

1. The cake with string work: those tiers look as soft as velvet!
2. Is that a CAKE bird cage?????
3. Does anyone else want the handwritten script cake as a dress? O_o

I thought I didn't like black and white cakes, but oo-la-la! That string work is fabulous!

The cakes with black fondant are striking, but ye gods, black frosting and black fondant are vile to eat.

I love string work. I did it at college and find it very therapeutic. Wish there was more of it being done.

The Sunday cakes are almost too pretty to eat - thank goodness you can have a picture or pictures to look at after the cakes are gone into your tummy.

How do you get such great cakes from the bakery to the venue? ("very carefully", yeah, I get that). I have to suspect that former serial wreckerators get demoted to delivery driver.

Just have the wedding in the bakery.

Of course, it is beautiful cakes like these that inspire the wrecks you give us on Wednesdays.

When I look at the primarily black cakes, I just keep thinking “But how awful would all that dye taste, what would it do to your teeth, and how many days would your poop look weird if you ate that?” Maybe I’m just weird that way (or maybe just a mom).

Wouldn't the first string work be "goth-darn impressive?" ;)

I also wanted the phone box to be blue.

Stunning. And the more you look, the more you keep seeing extra little details like the rabbits and deer, or the butterflies. I love cake 5 with the handwriting and the blueish tint, and the stringwork cakes are amazing. Love the swans.

Phone booths are not blue, but POLICE Boxes are (or were).
