What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Kids Cartoons!

Kids' shows get some of the cutest cakes, you guys. I don't even have kids, and I had a blast looking for these!

Just look at this adorable Doc McStuffins cake:

[By Valentina Pollicino in Italy]

Squee!

When I Googled the most popular kids' shows of 2018, I was amazed to see Pokémon still on the list. Good thing, though, since that means I get to show you this jaw-dropping Pikachu:

[By Le Delizie di Kicca in Italy]

The shading makes it look more like a ceramic sculpture than a cake! Also loving all the lightning bolts.

Oh hey, here's a show I've actually watched before: Miraculous: Tales of Lady Bug & Cat Noir

[By Soraia Amorim Sugar Artist in Portugal]

So impressed with the mix of 2D and 3D - plus that little ladybug & cat are adorable.

Judging by the amount of incredible Paw Patrol cakes out there, it must be a HIT with the little ones:

[By Medena Radionica in Serbia]

I like the little tower!

And speaking of popular shows, obviously My Little Pony is huuuuuge. John and I are even fans. I could do a whole post of great MLP cakes, but instead here's one of the cutest Pinkie Pie cakes I've ever seen:

[By Cakes By Ashley in Texas]

My favorite is how the flowers look like they're made of rolled-up balloon. I could totally see Pinkie making those with her stash of party balloons. :)

Here come another show I've been a fan of since the original: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

[Baker Unknown. Anyone recognize it?]

Look how fun this is, with the pizza base and that river of toxic sludge out the side! I would have loved this cake back in middle school... or heck, even today. (The reboot is awesome, I've got to catch up on it someday.)

I've seen a lot of people cosplay from this next one: Star vs The Forces of Evil

[By Andrea Bertini in Argentina]

The premise sounds hilarious in the best way, any of you watch it? I think I need to check it out.

One of my good friends has 3 young kids, and they are alllll about LEGO: Ninjago

[By Sweet Obsessions in Malaysia]

Even the figures are sugar! Wowza.

Speaking of my friend's kids, John and I got to theme her daughter's room after Elena of Avalor, so I've had a soft spot for that character ever since:

[Baker Unknown. Anyone recognize it?]

I love Elena's red-and-teal color scheme with all the bright flowers - so pretty, I want to wear them in my hair!

Years ago a reader e-mailed to tell me about this show her kids were watching: it was adorable and kind of steampunk-styled, so she thought of me. The show was called Octonauts, and now that I see this cake I want figurines of all the characters:

[By Amanda's Little Cake Boutique (new name) in the UK]

SO CUTE. Love all the soft pastels - and that submarine looks like a toy you could pick up and play with, not sculpted sugar! Amazing.

Happy Sunday, everyone! I think I'll go watch some cartoons now. :)

I was going to say that my granddaughter would kill for that Paw Patrol cake, until I saw the My Little Pony and Elena of Avalor cakes. Now she wants all three for her next party!

Star vs the Forces of Evil is well worth the time to watch! It is absolutely the best kind of silly fun!

I actually just got finished a few days ago with what is currently available of "Star Vs. the Forces of Evil", and it is so good. It starts off a wacky, madcap magical sitcom about a girl, Star Butterfly, who is the princess of the magical land of Mewni; she inherits her family's wand on her fourteenth birthday, as per tradition. But Star is a force of chaos, and thus ends up getting sent to Earth as an "exchange student" for training and practice in a less dangerous environment. She is assigned to board with the family of the "safest kid in school", Marco Diaz- who is a dedicated practitioner of Karate and really, really wants a more exciting life than he's got. He gets that when Star arrives- followed by Ludo, a Wannabe Big Bad who has designs on her wand. And his collection of varied, colorful, and overall rather dumb minions. If you know anime at all, this basically means you take a magical girl of the Cute Witch variety, but you make her an Action Girl, turn the madcap up to eleven... and then start gradually introducing plot. Season one is pretty episodic, though they sow seeds for future things that in one or two instances have still not been fully explored. The more it progresses the more plot it gets, and starts kind of deconstructing tropes about the genre and making characters who seem black and white at first much more three dimensional; the heroes have flaws as well as virtues, and the world is not nearly as black and white as the first episodes would lead you to believe. There are three seasons out as of now (it's streaming on Hulu, which is where i watched it) with a fourth in development right now. Needless to say, I'm looking forward to it. :)

Yes, you need to check out Star. Starts off as pure simple Magical Girl Fights Monsters, but then starts asking the questions that usually get skipped - why exactly are we fighting monsters? What makes them monsters and our equally non-human pals not monsters?

But never once gets heavy handed or lecture-y about it.

My husband texted me asking where I find Papa Troll because our daughter wanted to watch it and he couldn't find it anywhere. Once I clarified that she wasn't saying Papa Troll, but rather Paw Patrol he was able to find it right away!

I think a whole post of MLP cakes is an excellent idea! I’ll be waiting 😉

I'm WAY past childhood, but I still like Paw Patrol and Octonauts. A cute story is a cute story, right?

Star vs. Evil is one if the best cartoons airing right now. Watch it.

October 14, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterShay

Yes. You must watch Star!!! It is totally up your alley. And Alan Tudyk voices two of the characters!

You should have a Pinkie Pie Cupcakes theme sometime!

Oh dear... I absolutely can NOT let my kids see this! Miss 7 is obsessed with Ladybug & Cat Noir. Miss 5 has had a 3-year love affair with the Octonauts, particularly Péso (leading to an all-consuming obsession with penguins). If they see these, they'll start hallucinating that "Mum could make that" and I SO CAN'T!

Hey, does anybody remember The Mysterious Cities of Gold? I *loved* that show as a kid. Later replaced by a love of Daria. I'd love to see some Cities of Gold cakes!

Pony post! My Little Pony Post! ALL THE CAKES!!! (yay.)

Have you ever encountered Bitz and Bob? It's another British little kiddy show, and I love the premise. Bitz and her little brother/robot sidekick Bob go on imaginary adventures and Bitz uses engineering to save the day. I recommend looking up the title sequence. Bitz is all steampunky.

How do people eat these cakes?? They're gorgeous.

This may be my favorite sweets post ever. I love both MLP and Star, which you should definitely check out!

Absolutely yes to Star. It's silly and subtle. It's totally wacky, but also approaches those complicated teenage emotions and motivations in totally realistic ways (at least as far as I can remember 20 years after the fact).
