What is name day and why is it important enough to celebrate with a (most impressive and probably wildly expensive) cake?

In many cultures, a child is named for a saint, and instead of celebrating their birthday they celebrate the saint day connected to their name.
The show is awesome, but the books are better. Tell me you've at least read the books. :)
I wouldn't attend the wedding that last cake was served at, nossir; I'm scared of Red Weddings.
I have never seen a single episode either but these amazing cakes are kind of making me want to watch the show now.
in the game of thrones verse, a name day celebration is equivalent to a birthday celebration. presumably there's a waiting period between when babies are born and when they are officially named. but not for most people here in the english-speaking world :)
Oh my goodness. That last one is the Red Wedding Cake. I am in awe.
I gotta say I've never watched GoT either -- and these cakes remind me why! Understand me, these are beautifully done, but I'm squeamish as all get out....
The last cake is an edible, sweet-filled, spoiler alert! It is meant to look like that, broken sigil and all. That is the Stark wolf over the Frey towers.
Sad, but like Sara, I won't be wishing to attend a Red Wedding.
Furthermore, in the books at least (and I believe on the show too) they celebrate namedays instead of birthdays. It might just be an in-theme happy birthday cake.
I saw Tyrion in the Iron Throne wheelchair! Loved it! It was funny seeing him on Friday though in that same wheelchair dressed up as the Green Ranger. But it's MegaCon, so you just shrug and say "Eh, sure!"
WOW! WOW! WOW! I love the show and am very impressed with these cakes. And for those who haven't seen the show yet, it is very graphic, but the story line is amazing.

Seriously. I resisted because I knew I'd become addicted. And now, because I'm cooped up in hospital, I have allllll day on my hands so I caved in and watched it. I watched the first two seasons in three days and am hungrily awaiting a friend to bring me S3. Best. Decision. Ever. You know, unless you actually need to use your time productively, in which case, forget about it ;)

Jen, when you mentioned the Tyrion in the Iron Throne wheelchair above, you should've put a link in there to that MegaCon post on Epbot so everyone who is interested can see the photo. I brought up the picture of Tyrion and I was like "Mom, there was a guy in a wheelchair at MegaCon who cosplayed as him with the throne and everything!" (my mom's a huge GoT fan).

I would rag you out, Jen, for not having seen Game of Thrones, but it makes me feel better about being a nerd and never having seen Firefly, which I have resisted seeing for various reasons (but basically because 1. I don't like Joss Whedon and 2. I'm annoyed at seeing it and its fans every which way I turn in the nerd community).
How about we make a deal, Jen? I'll watch Firefly if you'll watch Game of Thrones.

I've never seen GoT either...don't have HBO. But I want a baby dragon so bad!!!
I just binge watched all three seasons over the last week, and I have to say that last cake makes me want to cry. Beautifully done, but oh the feels with the broken sigil.
Though, the sigil on the red wedding cake should be the Tully fish over the Frey towers, as it was Edmure Tully marrying Roslin Frey that kicked off the massacre.
Oh you gotta watch Game of Thrones, it's really inspired, in its where-is-it-going interwined plot twistings, the incredible cinematography and location shooting, the memorable engaging characters, the de novo creation of yet another medieval-England-of-myth alternaverse, the life-and-death cusps of circumstance, the brutal or noble or cunning strivings against cruel fate -- think Mary Stewart (The Crystal Cave) meets Robert Howard (Conan the Barbarian) - really very satisfying escapist fantasy to be immersed in - the Machiavellian machinations themselves are worth watching - plus: beautiful women, handsome men, villains, cut-purses, sell-swords, men-at-arms, plucky princesses, mesmerizing priestesses, stalwart nobles, barbarian warlords, a hot dwarf (go Peter D!), bitter queens, scheming ladies, hot-headed eldest sons, traitorous foster sons, royal bastards - what a universe! Beats the real world by a mile...
I showed these to my boyfriend and he said, "Oh, look. The Peter Dinklage cake is actual size." He's such an, um, ace.
I hope the last cake was a Red Velvet cake for the Red Wedding!
