What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Cakes of Thrones

What's cold and sharp and bled all over?

(By a friend of this redditor, no name listed)

THE IRON THRONE!

(Eh? EH??)

So gather your dire wolves, dragons, and impaled heads on stakes, my friends, because WINTER IS COMING:

(Posted here, baker Anna Tyler Cakes)

If impaled head stake cake pops aren't your thing, then how about this fabulous Weirwood heart tree?

(By Chelsea of The Inn at the Crossroads)

It's always nice to see a baker branching out.

I guess it shouldn't be surprising that a show named Game of Thrones has so many throne cakes - but what IS surprising is how awesome this one is:

(By Sweet Ruby Cakes)

The crown, the chained dragon, the carved wood detail? YES, PLEASE.

Oh, you need a place for birthday candles? Nooo problem:

(By Sugar and Spice)

C'mon. That is GENIUS.

Ok, enough thrones. How about some house sigil cupcakes?

(By Regali Kitchen)

Or everyone's favorite character?

(By Au pays de Candice)

Those airbrushed flames are perfection.

Of course, I know Daenerys isn't everyone's favorite character, so let me quickly cover all the other potential candidates:

(By Cake Retro)

Any questions?

(There was a fan at MegaCon last week who turned his wheelchair into the Iron Throne, and then dressed as Tyrion, complete with false legs. It was so. cool.)

House Targaryen does have the sweetest emblem, though:

(By Cake Central Member bikemom3)

And it's hard to beat the mother of dragons, if only because she has the best stuff in her closet:

(By Cake Central Member attackofthecakes)

Closet, chest... CLOSE ENOUGH.

Some couples are even having dragon eggs made for their wedding cakes, which is a surprisingly elegant touch of geekery:

(By Sophie Taylor, found here)

And speaking of elegant, ALL OF THIS:

(By Cake Haute Couture)

From the cobblestone board to the chain mail to the sculpted emblems, I'm pretty sure George R.R. Martin would need at least 300 pages to describe this cake.

(OH YES I DID.)

And finally, it's time for me to come clean: I've never seen a single episode of Game of Thrones.
But I will say this:

(By Choccywoccydoodah)

You gonna eat that?

What is name day and why is it important enough to celebrate with a (most impressive and probably wildly expensive) cake?

March 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDrockbox

Well done cakes indeed.

March 30, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

Drockbox, a Google search pulled up this article: http://gameofthrones.wikia.com/wiki/Nameday Basically, it's the same as a birthday.

March 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDiane1611

In many cultures, a child is named for a saint, and instead of celebrating their birthday they celebrate the saint day connected to their name.

March 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSusie

The show is awesome, but the books are better. Tell me you've at least read the books. :)

March 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAndi

I wouldn't attend the wedding that last cake was served at, nossir; I'm scared of Red Weddings.

March 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

I have never seen a single episode either but these amazing cakes are kind of making me want to watch the show now.

March 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSandy

in the game of thrones verse, a name day celebration is equivalent to a birthday celebration. presumably there's a waiting period between when babies are born and when they are officially named. but not for most people here in the english-speaking world :)

March 30, 2014 | Unregistered Commentergotgeek

Oh my goodness. That last one is the Red Wedding Cake. I am in awe.

March 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKristin

I gotta say I've never watched GoT either -- and these cakes remind me why! Understand me, these are beautifully done, but I'm squeamish as all get out....

March 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterPersephone

The last cake is an edible, sweet-filled, spoiler alert! It is meant to look like that, broken sigil and all. That is the Stark wolf over the Frey towers.

Sad, but like Sara, I won't be wishing to attend a Red Wedding.

March 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMintgiver

Furthermore, in the books at least (and I believe on the show too) they celebrate namedays instead of birthdays. It might just be an in-theme happy birthday cake.

March 30, 2014 | Unregistered Commentersusan

I saw Tyrion in the Iron Throne wheelchair! Loved it! It was funny seeing him on Friday though in that same wheelchair dressed up as the Green Ranger. But it's MegaCon, so you just shrug and say "Eh, sure!"

March 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterThenonlibrarian

WOW! WOW! WOW! I love the show and am very impressed with these cakes. And for those who haven't seen the show yet, it is very graphic, but the story line is amazing.

March 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJames Potter

Peter Dinklage on a cake? Yes, please

March 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKathy M

Speaking of Red Weddings...

Joss Whedon and George R. R. Martin walk into the room, and everyone you like dies.

Thank you, I'll be here all week. Be sure to tip your waitress, isn't she lovely?

March 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

I don't even watch that show and I think these are cool. The story about the guy at MegaCon is awesome. Would love to see a pic of that.

March 30, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterpikkewyntjie

Name day = birthday :)

WatchtheshowWatchtheshowWatchtheshowWatchtheshowWatchtheshowWatchtheshowWatchtheshowWatchtheshowWatchtheshowWatchtheshowWatchtheshowWatchtheshow!!!

Seriously. I resisted because I knew I'd become addicted. And now, because I'm cooped up in hospital, I have allllll day on my hands so I caved in and watched it. I watched the first two seasons in three days and am hungrily awaiting a friend to bring me S3. Best. Decision. Ever. You know, unless you actually need to use your time productively, in which case, forget about it ;)

Great cakes, too!

March 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterVanessa

You sure know a lot of the references for not having watched the show. Did you read the books? Who is the GoT geek who helped you with this? This post was right on, and just in time for the fourth season, starting in April. Lovely cakes, too.

March 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

Love GOT... the show and the books! Love these cakes! Love Tyrion. Geek heaven.

March 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSam

I think the impaled head stake cake popsĀ are a little bit cute, which a little bit scares me.

Well... that wasn't too hard ;)

March 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLiete

SaraCVT, your joke made me laugh so hard that my son came from the other side of the house to find out what was so funny.

March 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDegera

Oh no - Whedon and Martin, whatever you do, please don't ever walk into the CW comments section!

March 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterHaiku Joy

I don't know anything about Game of Thrones, but these are incredibly beautiful cakes. Kudos to all the bakers. Brilliant work!

Jen, when you mentioned the Tyrion in the Iron Throne wheelchair above, you should've put a link in there to that MegaCon post on Epbot so everyone who is interested can see the photo. Promo, girl, promo! (Hey, John, take care of that for her, will ya? Also, talk her into putting the Amazon links at the bottom of every Epbot post so her readers remember. Hope you guys are seeing an increase in your Amazon income because I want CakeWrecks to be around for a LOOOOOOOOOONG time!)

March 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKW

Omg. OMG.
I brought up the picture of Tyrion and I was like "Mom, there was a guy in a wheelchair at MegaCon who cosplayed as him with the throne and everything!" (my mom's a huge GoT fan).
And then I scrolled down...
...and you mentioned the exact same guy. From the exact same con.
My mind is so blown, I don't think I'll ever be able to piece it back together again.

March 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterPixie.Princesse

Sara, if you tip your waitress, be sure to return her to her original upright and locked position before deplaning.

The Red Wedding, yes. I'm guessing the first cake is also a Kurosawa reference?

March 30, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterkhereva

I would love a King Joffrey cake just so I could plunge a knife into his smug, vicious face!

March 31, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterCynthia

"From the cobblestone board to the chain mail to the sculpted emblems, I'm pretty sure George R.R. Martin would need at least 300 pages to describe this cake."

Oh my God it's so true. Still, love this series, books and show.

I would rag you out, Jen, for not having seen Game of Thrones, but it makes me feel better about being a nerd and never having seen Firefly, which I have resisted seeing for various reasons (but basically because 1. I don't like Joss Whedon and 2. I'm annoyed at seeing it and its fans every which way I turn in the nerd community).

How about we make a deal, Jen? I'll watch Firefly if you'll watch Game of Thrones.

March 31, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterEmma

OMG! What a completely exciting surprise to find my cake on Sunday Sweets! Thank you thank you thank you! I too have not seen the show, but much googling and asking friends helped plan the cake ;)

March 31, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterNicole

I have never seen the show, but the books ROCK!

March 31, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermiss_paper

I love the cakes! Wow!
Thanks for plugging my Tyion Costume!
That was a fun Con!

March 31, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMicaBethea

I love love love Game of Thrones ane the cakes are AWESOME! Would love to have any of them!

March 31, 2014 | Unregistered Commentertheresa

I've never seen GoT either...don't have HBO. But I want a baby dragon so bad!!!

March 31, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLI Laura

I just binge watched all three seasons over the last week, and I have to say that last cake makes me want to cry. Beautifully done, but oh the feels with the broken sigil.

April 1, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTanya B

Though, the sigil on the red wedding cake should be the Tully fish over the Frey towers, as it was Edmure Tully marrying Roslin Frey that kicked off the massacre.

April 5, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMintgiver

Oh you gotta watch Game of Thrones, it's really inspired, in its where-is-it-going interwined plot twistings, the incredible cinematography and location shooting, the memorable engaging characters, the de novo creation of yet another medieval-England-of-myth alternaverse, the life-and-death cusps of circumstance, the brutal or noble or cunning strivings against cruel fate -- think Mary Stewart (The Crystal Cave) meets Robert Howard (Conan the Barbarian) - really very satisfying escapist fantasy to be immersed in - the Machiavellian machinations themselves are worth watching - plus: beautiful women, handsome men, villains, cut-purses, sell-swords, men-at-arms, plucky princesses, mesmerizing priestesses, stalwart nobles, barbarian warlords, a hot dwarf (go Peter D!), bitter queens, scheming ladies, hot-headed eldest sons, traitorous foster sons, royal bastards - what a universe! Beats the real world by a mile...

April 9, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDoug Frazier

I showed these to my boyfriend and he said, "Oh, look. The Peter Dinklage cake is actual size." He's such an, um, ace.

April 12, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDianne R

I hope the last cake was a Red Velvet cake for the Red Wedding!
