The Cold Never Bothered Sunday Sweets, Anyway
December 7, 2014 According to the news, many of you are experiencing somewhat cooler temperatures these days. One could almost say it's a bit nippy out there. You know, sweater weather.
Or you might be buried in 10 feet of snow.
Either way, I say we celebrate the cold with some gorgeous cakes!

WOW.
Elsa's ice castle there is a whopping 27 inches tall, lit with 2 dozen LEDs, and fed over 150 people! I'm most impressed by the airbrushing and all those delicate tower spires; it looks like a movie-maker's model. SO COOL.(Pun intended.)

These are all amazing, but I fell in love with the Jack Frost cake. Calvin and Hobbes is excellent, too. I miss that comic strip. All so beautiful--thanks for sharing them.
I am squealing like a fan-girl over the Calvin and Hobbes cake. Yes, the others are gorgeous, but that one just ... takes the cake. *said with a straight face*
The snowmen on the Calvin and Hobbes were hilarious! And thank you for pointing out that the little birds made a wedding cake, such a big Awe (get it - Awww and Awe - heh). Really, all these cakes are just amazing. I loved the one with the birds painted on it, and feeding a crowd of 150 people with an amazing castle, adorable penguins....wow, you did it again, Jen. You totally blew me away!

In all honesty, sometimes I have mixed feelings about Sunday Sweets. Love to see cake made art, but part of my brain gets twitchy if I can't recognize the iconic shape of an actual cake somewhere in the sculpture of the dog, or flamingo, or what-have-you. (Sometimes, I also sit scratching my head, wondering how the blazes such a cake could be cut up and served without utterly trashing it. But I gather that pros, having put the thing together, can instruct servers about the proper way to take it apart...?)
All of these, though, strike the perfect balance. I instantly recognize the original cake shapes, but I still get to say, "Ooohh... Aahhh..." Also, I now need a cardinals-in-snow cake desperately. I love living on the West Coast, but I was raised back East: so I miss seeing cardinals in every Winter. (Not to mention snowplows.)
What a round up. The C&H cake was awesome. They were all awesome, but like you I love the humor.
Calvin and Hobbes!!! I love it! that was (and remains) my favorite comic EVER! and that particular cel was the best part of that strip. My family still references it whenever we get snow.
Love Calvin & Hobbes, but the one that got my awwwww was that first snowman. The face is adorable and the little broom is spectacular.
I had to embiggen the Calvin and Hobbes cake to view all the hilarious detail. Love it!
Sendingtheclowns - I'm pretty sure that's a kitchen countertop, not a floor, if that makes you feel any better. It looks exactly like the fake granite on my apartment counters.

Sort of hard NOT to stay warm her on the Texas Gulf Coast, but we try. The hubby has the air conditioner down to 70 to imitate something like cool weather. BBRRRrrrrrrrrr!

@Gemdrite: Well, thanks! I do feel better. I looked at it again and saw that it made way more sense for it to be a back-splash, kitchen thingy than a carpet that was installed part-way up the wall. Order is restored to my world. =^-.-^=
Leave it to Calvin and Hobbes to inspire both a Cake Wreck (poor snowman) and a Sunday Sweet at the same time!
@ ms_xeno I feel the same sometimes. That last one, in particular has me stumped. How much of the amazing construction is actual cake, and how much is inedible (whether it be fondant or LEDS or other structural pieces)? Whatever happened to a cake looking like, well, a cake with cool stuff on it?
Bah humbug.
On the positive side, I ADORE the Calvin and Hobbes and little red robin cakes!
All of these cakes are wonderful works of art, but being a mom of 2 girls under the ge of 10 I am in absolute Awe of Elsa's ice palace. Just amazing!
@ dalek On that last one, I squinted until I could imagine plain old cylinders under the blue. After that, it was all good. (So long as nobody here finds out that I've never actually seen Frozen. Ssshhhh...)
Also, if you didn't click on the Calvin and Hobbes one to see the baker's main page, make sure that you do. You've gotta' see the inside of the cake, too! It just adds another layer (pun intended) of glory. Cheers!
