What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

The Cold Never Bothered Sunday Sweets, Anyway

According to the news, many of you are experiencing somewhat cooler temperatures these days. One could almost say it's a bit nippy out there. You know, sweater weather.

Or you might be buried in 10 feet of snow.

Either way, I say we celebrate the cold with some gorgeous cakes!

(By Fernanda Abarca)

What better way to start than with Jack Frost holding a cupcake? "Icing" has never been so aptly named.

Or how about some Frosty frosting?

(By Sweet Disposition Cakes)

Btw, if you're having a hard time remembering these are actually cake, you're not alone.

Maybe if we tried some more traditional, tiered designs...

(By Milla Schmalz)

Nope. Still can't believe it's cake. Look how the lower bird is slightly 3D! And that hand-painting! Amazing.

This one looks like a perfectly painted stack of hat boxes:

(By Cake Central member Talmas)

Can't get over the texture on the hat and mittens; reminds me of a soft nubby sweater I used to own.

As fantastic as those are, though, you must admit that no one builds snowmen quite like Calvin & Hobbes:

(By My Cake Corner)

The perfect cake for slightly twisted families, like mine. :D

Hee!

Or if you prefer your winter characters with a little less, um, dismemberment:

(By Cake Hatteras)

Bumble the abominable snow monster! Aww.

And these cute little penguins are ready to par-TAY:

(By The Violet Cake Shop)

Or, for a more modern take:

(By Sugarplum Cake Shop)

Love the clean lines and shapes, and those vintage woodcut illustrations are deliciously retro-chic.
(Plus there's a bear in a row boat. C'mon. WHIMSY.)

This one would make a great Christmas card:

(By Jeanne Winslow Cake Design)

Hang on, I just noticed one bird is wearing a veil and the other has a twee little bow-tie! D'aww, it's a wedding cake! LOVE.

Most wintry cakes are all silvers, whites, and blues, so I'm loving this decadent bronze number:

(By Artisan Cakes by Julie)

Stunning. Just... stunning.

And finally, since most of us still aren't ready to "let it go," how about the most amazing Frozen castle cake EVER?

(By Celebrate With Cake)

WOW.

Elsa's ice castle there is a whopping 27 inches tall, lit with 2 dozen LEDs, and fed over 150 people! I'm most impressed by the airbrushing and all those delicate tower spires; it looks like a movie-maker's model. SO COOL.(Pun intended.)

Well, hope you guys enjoyed this week's Sweets! Happy Sunday, and stay warm out there!

Beautiful! I have to pick the Calvin & Hobbes cake as my all-time favorite! Jen - thanks for all your hard work.

SpectaCAKEular! I love the Calvin & Hobbes one the most! (But why does it look like it's set on the floor?)
The Jack Frost is beautiful, too (even though his face reminded me a bit of Norman Bates). Those fat little red birds...! Aw, they're all great. So, yeah...You have my address, right? =^~.-^=

These are all amazing, but I fell in love with the Jack Frost cake. Calvin and Hobbes is excellent, too. I miss that comic strip. All so beautiful--thanks for sharing them.

I am squealing like a fan-girl over the Calvin and Hobbes cake. Yes, the others are gorgeous, but that one just ... takes the cake. *said with a straight face*

The snowmen on the Calvin and Hobbes were hilarious! And thank you for pointing out that the little birds made a wedding cake, such a big Awe (get it - Awww and Awe - heh). Really, all these cakes are just amazing. I loved the one with the birds painted on it, and feeding a crowd of 150 people with an amazing castle, adorable penguins....wow, you did it again, Jen. You totally blew me away!
Thank you!
Beth

"Cool" is right! These cakes could even make the Winter Warlock's icy heart melt!

In all honesty, sometimes I have mixed feelings about Sunday Sweets. Love to see cake made art, but part of my brain gets twitchy if I can't recognize the iconic shape of an actual cake somewhere in the sculpture of the dog, or flamingo, or what-have-you. (Sometimes, I also sit scratching my head, wondering how the blazes such a cake could be cut up and served without utterly trashing it. But I gather that pros, having put the thing together, can instruct servers about the proper way to take it apart...?)

All of these, though, strike the perfect balance. I instantly recognize the original cake shapes, but I still get to say, "Ooohh... Aahhh..." Also, I now need a cardinals-in-snow cake desperately. I love living on the West Coast, but I was raised back East: so I miss seeing cardinals in every Winter. (Not to mention snowplows.)

What a round up. The C&H cake was awesome. They were all awesome, but like you I love the humor.

Calvin and Hobbes!!! I love it! that was (and remains) my favorite comic EVER! and that particular cel was the best part of that strip. My family still references it whenever we get snow.

December 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterRebekah

Love Calvin & Hobbes, but the one that got my awwwww was that first snowman. The face is adorable and the little broom is spectacular.

December 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAngelaS

I had to embiggen the Calvin and Hobbes cake to view all the hilarious detail. Love it!

December 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSandy

Sendingtheclowns - I'm pretty sure that's a kitchen countertop, not a floor, if that makes you feel any better. It looks exactly like the fake granite on my apartment counters.

December 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterGemdrite

Bear. In a rowboat. PULLED BY A REINDEER! ACK! These are all just gorgeous...

December 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterHunBun

I love the Calvin and Hobbes cake so much I cried a bit...
They are my favorite (well, Peanuts not included) and I miss them terribly! I need to go get out my books.

December 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterBin

Lovely selections!

Sort of hard NOT to stay warm her on the Texas Gulf Coast, but we try. The hubby has the air conditioner down to 70 to imitate something like cool weather. BBRRRrrrrrrrrr!

The cakes are gorgeous, especially the little birds. So perfect.

December 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAdo_Annie

What a pleasure to view.......thanks.

December 8, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDiana

The "modern" cake looks like it belongs to a Wes Anderson movie.

December 8, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterPenni

@Gemdrite: Well, thanks! I do feel better. I looked at it again and saw that it made way more sense for it to be a back-splash, kitchen thingy than a carpet that was installed part-way up the wall. Order is restored to my world. =^-.-^=

December 8, 2014 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

Leave it to Calvin and Hobbes to inspire both a Cake Wreck (poor snowman) and a Sunday Sweet at the same time!

December 8, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterpikkewyntjie

@ ms_xeno I feel the same sometimes. That last one, in particular has me stumped. How much of the amazing construction is actual cake, and how much is inedible (whether it be fondant or LEDS or other structural pieces)? Whatever happened to a cake looking like, well, a cake with cool stuff on it?

Bah humbug.

On the positive side, I ADORE the Calvin and Hobbes and little red robin cakes!

December 8, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDalek

All of these cakes are wonderful works of art, but being a mom of 2 girls under the ge of 10 I am in absolute Awe of Elsa's ice palace. Just amazing!

December 9, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDinah

@ dalek On that last one, I squinted until I could imagine plain old cylinders under the blue. After that, it was all good. (So long as nobody here finds out that I've never actually seen Frozen. Ssshhhh...)

Also, if you didn't click on the Calvin and Hobbes one to see the baker's main page, make sure that you do. You've gotta' see the inside of the cake, too! It just adds another layer (pun intended) of glory. Cheers!

WOW! So honored to have my Calvin and Hobbes cake featured here on Sunday Sweets!!! :) Thanks for all the love in the comments for it!

(@sendingtheclowns - Ha ha! Yes, @gemdrite is right, that was the kitchen countertop with the backsplash. After I saw your comment I looked again and could see how it looked like the floor with the outlet and everything! :) )

Blown away by the other cakes featured here! So beautiful... and cute!

Thanks again! So cool. :)
