Friday Favs 12/5/14

A few of my favorite submissions this week:
I know it's a little late to be celebrating Fall foliage, but I'm just loving these tree branches:
Ahhh, the majesty of nature.
In other news, this bed looks like Cookie Monster:
And this is a great way to start a fight:
("What's THAT supposed to mean?!")
Some days you finish the banana, and some days, the banana finishes you.
Guess the baker had to split.
I actually have an aunt Mary (HI AUNT MARY), so from now on when I think of her, I'll think of this:
Only one word right out of four? Uncle!
And finally, when you just can't help hoping it's a birthday cake for someone born in 1976:
[wicked grin]
Thanks to Laura, Carol Q., Bekki W., Sandi K., Raymond M., & Judi F. for sowing the seeds of laughter.

So is the 3st cake for a boy named Sue?
Are those nuclear reactors in the first picture???
I should have been a baker-if I can get paid for crappy work why not
At first I really thought it really was supposed to be Cookie Monster and it just looked like a bed. Then I noticed Cookie Monster had a puppy(?) on his face.
Just to be picky about it, wouldn't most Spirts of 76 would result in birthdays of 77? Either way, nice cake!
[Editor's note- Depending on how early in the year the spirt was. Sometimes I like to think about going to visit myself 6 years ago and explaining that in the future, I'll be discussing spirts on an internet cake site. Ya know, just to see my reaction. O.o -john (the hubby of Jen)]
Ha ha ha! I used to teach art for grades 4-8. I did whole units on drawing and painting trees, because the younger children always drew those tree-stumps-having-a-bad-hair-day type "trees". I guess some of those students cut class, and grew up (?) to become bakers.
I soooo love to show my mom the Walmart cakes on here being that she works in a Walmart bakery baking bread. Lol these are a riot. Scrolling down on my phone those "pillows"? Looked like boobs in some weird bra lol.
Loved this post, especially the many many layers in the grass cake! Oddly, also love the fall leaves cake, in an abstract, essence of trees kinda way.
Are we sure that Any Merry's cake has even one word right? Because truthfully, I think it looks like Hoppy B-Day (or B-Pay). If you're going to goof, make it epic I always say.
Sooo, the nature of scrolling and the fact that I tend to orient to pictures first, then text, means that my brain went to a far, far different place than Jen's did with cake #2. (Look at just the "pillows"/Cookie Monster's eyes. Surely I'm not the only one seeing it. Er, them.)
You would have thought that the Spirt of 76 cake would have at least used some patriotic colors. But if you are gonna wreck a cake, don't go halfway. Misspelling, inappropriate colors and curly ribbon - a trifeta of wreck-perfection.
At least they're not wishing Ant Marry a Happy Bidet.
Is that third cake just frosting piped onto a white piece of paper?
I can just hear the frightened puppy whimpering; "Can't sleep…Cookie Monster bed will eat me."
Not too late here! The curbside Poplar is still dropping leaves, which I expect to still be raking for a couple of weeks yet. In the rain. That's the American NW for ya'.
Nini, I agree with you about the first one. If their goal was to capture a young kid's tissue-paper-studded depiction of Fall, they actually did a pretty good job. Of course, if the purchaser handed the cake maker a George Inness landscape on a postcard and got this back, I can understand the former's disappointment.
I finally got caught up on the last week and a half. I missed you guys! Work is super crazy right now and it's seriously disrupting my CW viewing.
Today is my mini-me's 15th birthday. She picked out a Duck Dynasty cake. It's an edible paper (gross!) design. My first thought was "Well, they can't screw that up." Then I remembered... I'll let you know how it goes after her party tomorrow.
@john(FoKthoJ) is correct. March spirts make December babies. Youngest girl child is today, mine is tomorrow, and my baby growing oldest is the 19th. March is now abstinence month!
Yeah, I saw the bed boobs too. SMH. . . .
It never ceases to amaze me how many mistakes can be crammed onto the surface of a cake.
Many people don't know that Lou Reed--best known as singer and poet--was also quite a baker. The banana is obviously a replica of the famous Velvet Underground album cover, and was made for the unveiling of Reed's re-mix of the classic album, which includes such cake inspired songs like:
1. Sunday Sweets Morning
2. I'm Waiting for the Pan
3.Creme Fatale
4. Venus Stirs
5. (Look at the Frosting) Run, Run, Run
6. All Tomorrow's Pastries
7.There She Wrecks Again
Available now at all Tower Record stores!
"Spirt of 76. This has to be my favorite cake!" he ejaculated aloud to the now stunned and aged audience. "Now, if we can do something about those promiscuous insects ruining our picnics with their wonton ways," he dribbled to the writhing crowd below him.
"Still," he panted in worried angst as the dying embers of love faded with the withering hope of a broken Viagra dissolving in tepid, seething pond scum, "let us now know, no grass grows where my Rosemary goes.... no, no. No grass grows under "her" feet unless "he" wants it to occur."
He then dripped as a vanquished man from the dampened, cookie encrusted moppet's bed, unhappy to see me and with no banana in his pocket excepting the flaccid one grown on trees sheltered by a nuclear power plant.
"Ah, the good old days of my youth. I was young once, you know. Did I ever tell you about how I met your mother? She was a looker in her time, way back in '76 when she readily gave birth to a smile and begrudgingly to a lifetime of lasting memories," he said as his life faded into quantum crumbs of a day-glow sub-ether. "Life is good, nonetheless. However.... Cheerios is better," he chortled into the black hole consuming and vanquishing his essence.
My mother - an English teacher of the old school - always insisted that "Ants crawl on the floor. Aunts marry uncles". I can promise you, NONE of her students, children, grandchildren, or anyone else who came within close contact with her, would have *ever* made that mistake on poor Mary's cake. Some of the other errors, maybe, but not that one.
The question of the '76 spurt's having been born in 1976 would depend upon whether *the spurt* happened early enough in '76. My daughter was born in Feb. of '76. I am very foggy about when she officially moved in, but it had to have been in '75. My 6'3" oldest son (my first) was only 4 lbs, 10 oz when he was born (obviously quite prematurely). Maybe he didn't like the accommodations. My third and last (another boy) was born on April Fool's day. You just never know...!
Oh, and @ jackwire: Yay(!)~ Lou Reed! (But are ya sure it's not at Flour Record stores?)
=^~.~^=
@ Bill C: <clapping> bravo sir...was that a free form poetry story or a free form story poem? At any rate, it cracked me up!
@ jackwire: if it's available at all Tower Records, by all means count me in. I grew up in Sacramento, CA (where Tower began), we had the Tower of Records and the "mile of levi's" at Tower Jeans, Tower Cafe (still there, but no longer owned by Tower obviously), There were also a few other things they sold...shoes, they had a Tower of Shoes. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
Yeah, I saw the bed/ pillow boobs as well. Have a great weekend all!
So, the "suggestive" bed/cake is almost perfectly mediocre... I might change the pillows, if I had to put a head on it (like my own, and if it were a real pillow). I think I'd get dents in my face from the big knots on those. And the dog would have to try to not be too "yappy" if I'm watching House reruns. Oh, and "Yay, Jodee!" I have a terrible memory, but now that you're back, I missed you!! (I hope you know what I mean, anyway.) =^~.~^=
Spirts of 76 are directly related to Cookie Monster "bed" usage.
@sendingtheclowns: Flour records, HAHAHA. Good one.
@VaBeach alemaP: Are there even any Tower Record stores still open? Do the young ones even know what a record is?
Lol now I see the lovely cookie monster "eyes" as something else entirely. The dog looks to be a freckle gone wrong too. Wow.
My mother's name is Mary, and all her nieces and nephews call her "Ahnt" or "Ahntie" Mary.
Which the bakers would misspell "Ont" or "Onte" or some such. Can't win.
@Jodee: Happy Birthday! I hope the day is filled with love, laughter, and, of course, cake! (With extra frosting...and sprinkles!)
I think the banana cupcake cake lacked appeal... (can't believe this pun wasn't in the thread earlier)
The grass is an Olde English thing. It means she's never idle. it's actually a nice sentiment if she's turning 60. Ha!
