What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: You Can't Handle The Cute!

Hi. I'm Jen, and I'm addicted to cute.

What can I say? Sometime I just NEED to see a baby dragon holding a beach ball surrounded by pastel pennant bunting.

(By Choko Late)

Ahhhh. That's the stuff.

(Even the letters are adorable. How?!)

Needless to say, I heartily approve of cutesying up my favorite characters, like Bats and Wonder Woman here:

(By Little Pieces of Heaven, found here)

Cutest crime-stoppers evah! And how perfect are their colors together?

I know some folks find the button eyes on Lalaloopsy dolls a little too Coraline-esque, but I'm completely nuts for them:

(By Jussra Soares and found here - but no website is listed. Anyone have it?)

Squee! Srsly, it's all I can do not to start binge-buying these every time I'm near the toy aisle. And would you look how sweet that quilted pattern is? With the little tape measure and sewing basket and spools? And that fabric name plaque on the wall with the birthday girl's name is super fun.

I think these next two need no introduction:

(By The Cupcake Maker)

...but that's Despicable behavior.

If you're not smiling right now, you should get your emotion chip checked. And is anyone else expecting to see that goggle strap snap back at any second? I feel like I could reach out and twang it, it's so perfect!

So. Buzz Lightyear. Could he be any cuter?

Why yes, yes he could:

(By Don Buciak II)

I will never stop being amazed at what Don can do with just buttercream - NEVER. (Yes, that's all icing!) Think you can't have a show-stopping sculpted cake without fondant? Then hit that link up there and go see more of Don's work - but hang on to your socks.

I've determined there aren't nearly enough Rainbow Brite cakes in the world. Happily Amy here is working to fix that:

(Submitted by Kate F. and made by Amy A-S)

YES. I love her ponytail, and the rainbow stars. Of course, you do realize I'll be spending the next hour searching ebay for my old doll with the crinkly holographic skirt, right? And a Twink in every color, so I can make a Twink rainbow? They'll look perfect next to my Gremlin and Animaniac dolls.
Aw yeeeah.

And now, the cutest knight in all the land:

(By Tal Tsafrir's Cakes)

Accompanied by the cutest dragon, perched atop the cutest castle. In fact, I'm pretty sure that's the Kingdom of Cute, right there.

Sure, Hello Kitty is already pretty darn adorable - but EVERY girl looks better with nerdy glasses and a little plaid bow, amirite?

(Submitted by Kristen R. and made by Alena's Sweets)

Speaking of which, I've always thought the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles would be more fun as girls - haven't you?

(By Little Cherry Cake Company)

And girls who like cupcakes just as much as they like their pizza, too - because those are the kind of teenage mutant ninja turtles *I* want to hang out with. Cowabunga, dudettes!

Er, you may want to cover your ears, 'cuz I'm about lose my adorbz-loving mind over this next one:

(By Chef Sam)

TIGGER!!! It's all. About. That. Tigger. And the balloons. Yes. I want that little Tigger, holding the balloons, on my desk, IMMEDIATELY.

Please? [Bambi eyes]

I'll admit that not all robots are cute, but for every murderous Dalek or Cylon there's a chipper little sweetie like this, just waiting to bloop at you cheerfully and offer to play a game of checkers:

(By Cheirinho De Coisa Boa)

That smile! And his eyes light up!

Well, my friends and fellow addicts, I hope you've gotten your fill of cute Sweets today - but if not, I think a happy little penguin wearing an aviator cap and balancing on a circus ball should do the trick:

(By Pauline Bakes The Cake)

[collapses from the cute]

Yep, we're done here.

Happy Sunday, everyone!

EXTRA BONUS SWEETNESS: Our friends Rick and Sasha over at cakelava - whose work we've featured a lot over the years here on Sweets - just wrote a fun book called Extreme Cakeovers:

And even better, they have three copies to give away to you guys! So just comment below to enter, and we'll announce the three lucky winners in tomorrow's post. Good luck!

Amazingly cute cakes! I'd love to win one of the books so I can try some myself :D

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSteve

I NEED that Rainbow Brite cake for a childhood friend. I had convinced her that my bedroom closet was a portal to Rainbow Land. She was always disappointed that I never let her come along. We still share an affection for Rainbow Brite and that cake would totally make her year. :)

love when you do cute-sy cakes!

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermymlb

They're all so cute! I'd love to try my hand at a Cakeover.

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterChristine

Aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!! So cute!!! Must have the robot and Mike the Knight with dragon! Tigger's pretty cute too, but I think the penguin really takes the cake! :D Sorry, couldn't resist. :D

I would love to win the cookbook! Since my son's birthday is Nov. 2nd, his Halloween costume and birthday party are the same theme every year. So far, I've made him a sculpted frog cake, a Blue's Clues cake, a monster cake, a Super Why cake, 2 Mario cakes, and this year he wants Tom & Jerry. I think I'm going to need a little more help for this year's cake. Oh, BTW, all buttercream here - no fondant allowed! :D

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterElizabeth

The penguin! In an aviators cap! On a circus ball! It's just too much cute for one cake!

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterdeb

My cheeks hurt from smiling !!!! scared to show my kids these pictures because I can bake but not like this!! amazing!! keep up the good work you guys

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered Commentercbruk

So much cute! Also, I would make so much good use out of Extreme Cakeovers. Every year, I bake multiple birthday cakes, and every year there is a disconnect between what I think I can make them look like and how they actually turn out. Maybe if I just add more sprinkles... MORE sprinkles!!!

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJulia

The girly TMNT may have been my all-time favorite! Thanks for sharing!!

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterGrace

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTammie

i love them all. if only i could b turning one again

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered Commenternyasha

Rainbow Brite! I don't have to go to eBay to find one, I just have to go to my parents' attic, where I have the entire set (minus Buddy Blue), plus Starlite, in the Rainbow Brite picnic set. I think my father is still convinced they are worth something.

Love that dragon cake soooo much!

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterS. Jane

OOOoooo, I would love to have this book! I love to do cakes but I'm afraid some of mine turn out like something I'd see on here, and not on Sunday Sweets day, either. Thanks for the many laughs you've provided me!

Oh my gosh! My six year old - who is a robot FANATIC - is swooning over those robots! She would FLIP over a copy of that book! :)

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterStephanie

Okay, if you are keeping Tigger and the balloons, can I have Pooh Bear, and just one balloon? That might make my day! :)

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAnna

I'll be searching for the Rainbow Brite too! Love love love! (I'd love that book too!)

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMelissa B

I need the little dragon from the Kingdom of Cute to come be my new best friend. And, it's the Eeyore that makes the Pooh cake, not Tigger!! Sorry, Jen. Do you see those arms? Those eyes? He's saying "up, up" and wants to be cuddled!

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterStacie

Loved all the cakes! One of my top fave Sunday Sweets post!

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKayla

Ooh, I just adore the robot cake!

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMisti

That penguin cake is the textbook definition of cuteness! A close second is the knight and his dragon. So much adorableness that I can't handle it.

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJennieJo

These cutie cakes def made my day!

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterRose W.

OMG! So much incredibly adorable stuff on one page! My sweet little head might explode! :) Love the little dragons on the two cakes! I want to live in the cake world of the knight and dragon!

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSissy O

I think I have to have a minion cake. Just. Like. That. :)

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSarah H

I totally had the Rainbow Brite doll too! I also had Sprite underpants. Too cute!
As for the Tigger and balloons, I could probably make it for you out of Sculpey.

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBrandy

Lapsing into a cute-coma! Stupid-looking grin still stuck on face…must hang on…ggggzzzzzgghh…(drools and falls over)

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterRebekah K

My friends and I get together every weekend and we always try to outdo one another with a cool new food or dessert or cocktail. This would for sure help me win for like the next year of weekends!

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterroxyrox77

Well, I like the Tigger too, but Eeyore is just ADORABLE! All of those cutesy one year birthday cakes certainly make me feel like I was slacking for my son's birthday. Oh well. :)
