What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Dad's Big Day

Don't you love it when a plan comes together?

Thanks to Glenda for getting that all tied up.

The most appropriate song for today would probably be "Papa Don't Preach..."

PLEASE tell me the backstory PLEASE PLEASE

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

I'm not sure how to feel about this cake.
Put my dad never wears a tie, his birthday is in September, and he hasn't been in jail in my lifetime. If ever.

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMyra

I like that cake. It's got heart.

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBB, Miami

I do believe killing three birds with one stone is illegal in some states.

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

It's a "three birds/one stone" ingenious design; it makes nothing BUT sense. The guy did something reprehensible/heinous-or at the least illegal, and went to prison. I see this as the wife's little "reminder" that, while it may be his birthday/Father's (Fathers'?) Day/parole day, he is still not *quite* forgiven, and WILL, essentially, be under a form of short-leash, "emotional house arrest".
=^-.-^=

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

Unfortunately, our third cake would have to read welcome to THE home. Maybe just cut that part off.

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMaggie

I'm with mindy1 and @SaraCVT that made me snort. My cats now think something is wrong with me.

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMyra

@SaraCVT ("I do believe killing three birds with one stone is illegal in some states.")

*giggles* Well, let's HOPE so; ALL states, ideally!! But think about it, if you're busy bopping one, would the two other ones actually be stupid enough to stand around waiting for their turn?

This wonderful cake, the "Isolation-regeneration/Parturition-maturation/Incarceration-liberation Celebration Cake", depicts the transition from becoming a parent through many years of birthdays and finally the freedom of having your house to yourself again someday. Not a celebration of three separate events combined on one cake by someone too cheap to order separate cakes for each event, no, this is a cake that unifies a lifetime achievement!

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterzoomom

Identical triplets, maybe? O_o

Do I see a Hallmark Channel movie in the making?

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBADKarma

Zoomom for the win! :-) I need a cake like that for my brother-in-law...his oldest is moving out this week! One down & one to go... Hubby & I, on the other hand, are at least 5 yrs away from having our first-born shov...uh, leave the nest... ;-)

PS @ sendingintheclowns - SNORT! Hey, if they were dodo birds... (Course, that's why they are extinct...)

Aaaand where's Haiku Joy? (I saw you're back! I'm awaiting my fix now... All hail Haiku Joy! :-)

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKarateLady

@zoomom:
"Cheap"? Maybe, if you wanna look at it THAT way, and be all judgemental & stuff...
But let's be fair, and also consider "thrifty", or (my favorite) "so tight that he/she squeaks."

Spring, Sprang, Sprung: A Three Part Short Story with Foreshadowing Told On One Cake

SPRING
Ah, Spring. A Young man’s fancy turns to love. “Be careful,” Dad told his son. “We’ve already got one father in this house celebrating Father’s Day,” he added with a wink. His son just smiled and went off with his buddies to tie one on.

SPRANG
The words “be careful” faded as the party went on and were soon lost under a pile of empty beer cans. Love and legs were in the air. As tensions released, the birthday swim team sprang forth.

SPRUNG
“Here’s your son,” the officer said to the Dad. “We let ‘em all off with a warning, but I wouldn’t count on that again,” he added. “Some of these parties get really outta hand. You never know what’ll happen….”

"I'm not sure how to feel about this cake". "My cats now think something is wrong with me."
- Myra
I'm not sure that you need to feel anything, dear. I, myself, have had very conflicting emotions, as well as physical symptoms including-but-not-limited-to nausea and headache.
As to what our cats "think" about us: either we aren't supposed to know, wouldn't want to know, or are grateful that we really can't know. Doesn't matter--we never WILL know!

This is obviously a cake for a travelling escape artist/magician who's missed spending Father's Day and his birthday with his family. The handcuffs are only there because they couldn't find a tiny straight jacket.

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJust Andrea

bahahahahahahahahahahahah

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterForester

Maybe its a 50 shades of birthday cake???

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJules

Okay, so Dad made it out of jail in time for his birthday....that's nice. I guess that's..what?..a good role model? lol

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterlinda

Are those balloons or sperm?

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy

I think those open handcuffs are intended to be as much of a symbol of joy and freedom as the balloons. "You're free! You're home!" Seems very loving to me...

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTony

The design is great! If Dad is anything like Uncle Joey in Back to the Future then they could always cut off the right third of it. Just make sure to slip the file in there before giving to Dad.

I also like Jules' idea. Maybe that's a cake from Mom that they will share privately later. Let's hope they both got to celebrate three times and maybe even simultaneously.

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterpikkewyntjie

Heh... I thought the same thing as Jules.

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMeesh

So Cousin Joey has finally gotten out of jail!

I hope he keeps himself out this time!

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterIsolder74

Maybe — just maybe — this one cake is meant for three different people?

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLHSwish

I think it's really sweet.

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMelissa

Is this all for one person or did it just make sense to have a party for three different people at once? I'd like to think we're talking about one dad, one cake, multiple reasons to celebrate.

@ Midnight Writer..."Love and legs were in the air." I loved the imagery. I almost spit Diet Coke all over my computer.

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPottsy Girl

Celebrating thrice?
Release the secret weapon:
tres leches triptych.

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHaiku Joy

@sendingtheclowns I don't want to know what my cats think. The idea scares me more than a little, since I can see the judgment in their little eyes.

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMyra

Maybe it's a multi-occasion celbration. One for Dad, one for the birthday boy/girl, and one for the family jailbird.

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBigskyred

Well... that could be nearly a cake for my father and I; my birthday's the 16th, his the 18th (and his father's was the 18th, also), and here in Portland, it's Gay Pride weekend... a slight change to the third "panel", and voila!

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered Commenteraretoo

Maybe he was on his deployment and they are a kinky couple, so she couldn't wait to get the cuffs on him (or herself)

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterannutheroption

@Midnight Writer wins the internet today! (by the way, looks like you may be owing a few people new monitors/keyboards today, myself included!) Well done!
@Myra and @sendingtheclowns ~ That would be why I no longer own a cat. To much judgment in those eyes o.O
@Jules ~ I'm glad someone else said it!
@Haiku Joy ~ Yayayayayayayay!!!

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJodee

Awww...poor Dodos. Just because they weren't Rhodes scholars it doesn't mean that they weren't worth keeping around. Probably had a lousy agent.

@ linda: "Okay, so Dad made it out of jail in time for his birthday....that's nice. I guess that's..what?..a good role model? lol"

No, yo--he be a PArole model. (Sorry; couldn't let that get by.) =^~.-^=

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

That could be a cake for my ex. His birthday often lands on Father's Day. Getting out of the joint would not be a stretch unless he has changed A LOT since I knew him.

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterEnzosmom

And it's @Midnight Writer for the win! Awesome explanation, truly awesome. *applause*

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDebs

@ Myra: "... I can see the judgment in their little eyes." Well, at least TRY not to feel "judged". Cats are simply doing what they do best: being masters of the "superiority" gaze. Mine are so good at it that they can even pull it off after having eaten a big, crawly bug. They're magnificent. =^-.-^=

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

A-Team reference FTW!

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHM

hhmmm...now I'm tempted to snatch the Intraweb award from zoomom & give it to The Midnight Writer (though misnamed because it's no where near midnight...more like midday @ the time of his/her post...)

PS to Haiku Joy - Very erudite...excellent!

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKarateLady

@zoomom: bravo! well done!

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermel

Is that a Colonel John "Hannibal" Smith quote, perchance? Win! And NOW the handcuffs make much more sense.

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJust Andrea

So I just saw on FB that the person who did the cake reconized it! She was in great spirits and said it was supposed to be for a guy who was in jail and just got out-but while in jail he missed his b-day and Father's day! Talk about a tri-fecta of a cake!!!

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAmyLyn

Holy carp, that was FUNNY!! I want to be friends with that family- I really, really do.

OMG, zoomom, that took me reading it 3 times to get it but it's freakin' hysterical! (I'm a little tired? Does that excuse it?)

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara Anne

@Pottsy Girl, Jodee, Debs: Thank you, and I am sorry about the almost-spit. I have learned that the first rule of Cake Wrecks is do not read the post or comments while drinking.
@KarateLady: re zoomom -- she is a funny, clever lady; let's share.

June 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterThe Midnight Writer

To be fair, the three sections may be for 3 different people, My birthday is June 17, so I sometimes have my birthday on father's day, and it could be something along those lines, maybe it's father's day, and the 11 year old daughter is celebrating her birthday, and the 17 year old son is gettig home from Juvie all on the same day, or something.

June 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

My mind went somewhere it shouldn't and now I can't get it back no matter how hard I try lol. Stupid 50 shades of grey books. When I saw the handcuffs I just wondered who would order something like this..until my brain went evil on me. Thank you wreckerator whoever you are lol.

June 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterArlene

John says this isn't a wreck and Jen agrees, though she thinks it is funny (which it is). The sidebar says that a wreck is any cake that Jen finds funny, but Jen is saying that a cake she finds funny is not a wreck.

The Prime Directive says that if Jen says it's a wreck, it's a wreck. It follows that if Jen says it's not a wreck, it's not a wreck. But if Jen says it's not a wreck while acknowledging simultaneously that it meets the official definition of a wreck...? Theardare is conflicted.

The third panel isn't necessarily about incarceration. Hubby could be in the service, or a long-haul trucker, for instance. [Glances around] And he's an amateur magician on the side. Yeah, that's it. Hi, kids!

June 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

Obviously, this is a cake for a father who wears a tie, always ties the end of the condom once he's um used it, and who remembers (or whose partner remembers) the safeword.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Seriously, though, I work with a number of persons who are ex-offenders, or are married to ex-offenders. They are indeed happy not to be incarcerated. They get to celebrate, too.

June 12, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterkhereva

I see the "official" explanation, but I prefer to think of it as, "Happy Birthday, you sexy Dad. You've been gone a long time; let's celebrate."

Yeah, I read those books, too. ;-)

June 12, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterlisadh

Spitsnort: Love and legs were in the air. Thank you Midnight Writer. Can I get that on a bumper sticker?
