What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

For All You Mothers

Sometimes it's hard to tell Mom how much she means to us.

Other times it's hard to tell how she still puts up with us.

I like to think it's because of all the care and consideration that goes into the mother's day cakes we give her, though.

Or, ok, maybe it's something else.

Just remember: I LOVE ALL YOU MOTHERS.

And if I could get every one of you moms out there a cake of your own, it would be this one:

Awwww YEEEEAH.

Happy weekend, everyone!

Thanks to Cathy S., Laura F., Deanna N., Carol D., Ginny H., Raziel P., Anony M., Breanne R., Barbara R., Chrissy D., Jonna S., & Cathi C. for the cakes only a wrecker could love.

Sung to "Mamma Mia"

I feel cheated by you. You bought bad cake again.
Did you think "She won't mind," and hang out with your friends?
Look at these. Wow! Will you never learn?
I seems like now, Wreckerators have lost control
Just a pretty cake. That's my goal.
Just one look and I can hear Stephen King
REDRUM is the word that I want to sing. Whoa -o-o

Mamma Mia, there you go again
My, my, couldn't you resist these?
Mamma Mia, cake low blow again
My, my, wish I could have missed these.
Yes, Moms are broken-hearted
Tossed cakes once you departed
Why, why, couldn't you buy flowers? NO!
Mamma Mia, now Moms really know
Just how badly Mother cakes can blow.

Somehow, Happy Mather's Day seems a nice compliment to Falker Satherhood Day. They just sound so right together.

And thanks, but I'll skip the ash-colored skull. Or, maybe it's a good idea to help keep me on my diet! Just looking at the gray color makes me think of licking an ashtray. Mmmmmm.

My mother's day present this year is going to be a new little boy! I just found out yesterday that we will be bringing home a 2 and 1/2 year old son on Monday! Our other two children are really excited too. I had to share it with you all at Cake Wrecks because I've been reading this blog and the comments almost daily for the past several years and I think you are an awesome (and awesomely hilarious) group of people.

Also, I bet my new son, who I've never met, could make a cake better than those.

May 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTricia

O'Mom, most certainly Irish.

May 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLorie

To be fair, the "I love you mothers" cake could be for a lesbian couple. Still not the most winning design, but at least it would be grammatically correct.

Moom Ha ha ha! Is that what cows call there mothers? Mooms? Moooooooommms. See, makes perfect sense. Maybe. Right. I'll just stop talking now.

May 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHolly Folly

Now, to be fair, the "I love you mothers" cake could be from a girl who has two moms. It does happen!

May 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTrevor

I thought that one cake didn't look too bad. Then I realized it said "Mathers Day" rather than "Mothers Day." If you're into the musical stylings of Eminem, Mathers day is a very good day. (His real name is Marshall Mathers, for those not as into the musical stylings of Eminem.)

May 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSpectra

Sharyn, PERFECT as usual :D as for the cakes, it's bad when the skull cake looks the best :P

May 10, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

I lau you, too.

I think the fifth cake (pink monstrosity) was supposed to say "Happy Molker Sotherhood," but they ran out of room.

May 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNaomi

When I read the O'mom cake, I heard an exasperated 14 yr old. Sort of like an affectionate eye roll.

May 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKim L.

Maybe the second means "One Sharp Mom."

May 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterClassic Steve

The decorator for #2 has perfect left-to-right dyslexia.

The last one really is good, as long as Mom is gothy.

Congraduations Tricia! Have a most wonderful motherday!

May 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSuBee

@Sharyn: Thanks!
@Shirley: Excellent!
@Jen: Wonderful!
I love --- just.... love --- the little bow on the skull on the last cake. Makes all that horrible grey icing so girly!

May 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMaureen

Aw come ON. The last one is awesome. In an "Abby Sciuto has kids" sort of way.

May 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBADKarma

Thanks SueBee! I might not be the Woulds Best, but I do hope to be 1 number Moom to him.

May 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTricia

Congratulations, Tricia! You're getting a far better gift than a cake! (See, I could never be hired to decorate cakes because I can speel gud.)

Sharyn: Awesome, as always. Thanks for the earworm, too!

May 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

I can explain the last one. The current hot trend amongst "tweens"--which I know, having two of them--is something called Monster High. The storyline goes something like this: alien/monster (ie, vampire, Frankenstein's monster, ghost, etc.,) come to a high school near you and because they really just want to be like every other teenage girl, wear a ton of makeup and are mainly interested in high fashion. Makes a whole bunch of sense, right? The undead have *always* been your main market for shoes, after all. Anyway, that skull with the bow on it is MH's logo--I have that thing around the house in so many places you wouldn't believe it! My elder twin is in fact dressed mainly in pink today and she's wearing barrettes with that logo on them. So it's fairly common. And I know if Olivia saw that cake, she'd buy it.

"I love you mothers"! I love it! What a difference a comma makes!

May 10, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterwordphreak

I totally want the skull cake! Love it!

May 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNagzilla

"I Lou you too, sweetie."

M-o-o-m, that spells "moom".

May 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNyperold

Congratulations Tricia!!

May 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterEla

I Love you mothers, too!!

May 10, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterlisadh

Personally speaking, the Happy Mother Days cake is brilliant. The bow is simply perfect.
Tricia: Well done! I hope the transition goes smoothly. We have an adopted child, too, so we know the joys and stresses of adoption. Many blessings to you and your family.

May 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterIrish Lass

The creator (creatrix?) of the heart-shaped cake should have waited until after decorating for that hit of crack. They started out straight...

Congratulations , Tricia! If you do a cake to celebrate, do share. :-)

I actually have another reason for the "I love you Mothers" cake... it's what my hubby actually calls his mom! Occasionally, when he's being silly, he'll "baby-fy" it and say "Muvers", but he either calls her "Mom" or "Mothers" on a regular basis. I don't know where he picked up the habit, but his mom always called him "Bumpers" since he was constantly running into walls and furniture as a kid (he has a misshapen foot that affects his balance) so he may have started saying "Mothers" because of "Bumpers". I don't really know, and he's done it so long, he doesn't remember how it started, either.

Generation gap: The "Mather's Day" cake made Spectra think of Marshall Mathers, and I thought of Jerry.

May 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterWill

Am I the only one who saw the "Omom" one and instantly started making "Om-Nom-Nom" noises?

May 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTotalFluffster

@Tricia: Congratulations!

#1: *SIGH* If you sound out 'worlds' you would never put a 'u' in there. I could see 'werlds' or 'wirldz' or even 'whirleds', but 'woulds'? Really?

#2: "You are one number, Mom! Not necessarily number one, but you are definitely in the top ten." Or maybe Mom started a new band named One Number, like One Direction?

#3: "I Low You Mom"? Is that some kind of new poker term? As opposed to "I raise you"? Like, in the middle of a poker hand, someone announces, "I Low You Mom". Which means the person's mom just called and asked them to do something right away. Instead of having to fold and lose all the money they've put in the pot that hand, the person gets to retrieve their money.

#4: White frosting with black spots and the word 'Moom' on it? Subtle.

#5: Wait. The word 'Happy' has a 2 in it. Hee. By the time they got to 'Day', they were reduced to random lines just thrown on there!

#6: OH! This is the petition I've started! I want to make Motherday the name of one of the days of the week. I think we can all agree Saturday would sound much better as Motherday, right? "What are you doing this weekend?" "Well, on Motherday I have a soccer game (football for those...pretty much anywhere besides USA). Oh, maybe I should also call my mom..." HAHA!

#7: This is the backup plan to #6 above. If I can't have Motherday, then I want to make Mother Days, which would be a week long event. Some of the festivities include: Children doing chores in exchange for brightly colored beads, and children dressing up in outfits picked out by Mother [Awwww! Jeffrey! I KNEW you would look adorable in that pink bunny costume! Remember 25 years ago when you were 1, I had you dress up like that for Easter?!]. There will also be deep fried, multi-colored pastry with a tiny, plastic Mother baked inside. Whichever child gets the tiny, plastic Mother has to rub Mother's feet for an hour each night next Mother Days.

#8: I actually read that one as correct the first time through.

#9: I immediately thought 'Irish Mom', too. I'm curious, though. Is that supposed to be O'Mom? Is that some kind of decoration? A ring?

#10:It started out as 'Happy Day' and they totally had to go back and put 'Mother' on, didn't they?

#11: If that cake was a leeetle bit cuter, I would consider it for this Sunday, where my mom, MIL, SIL's mother, and I will all be gathered!

#12: @SaraCVT: I immediately thought of Monster High. I don't know how I know about that, as my two kids are definitely not into it... *shrug*

@BADKarma: Abby! Love her.

May 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJust Andrea

I'd happily take that last cake!

I lorm my Moom, and wish she was still here so I could wish her Happy Mather's Days.

May 10, 2013 | Unregistered Commentercal331

Whats wrong with the "I love you mothers" cake? My son has two mothers, so if we got this cake I would like it

May 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKelly

#2 A one-pound Mom? Quick, call the Guinness people!

#5 Ok, there was an earthquake going on at the time, but doesn't that justify a redo?

#8 "Happy Mather's Day." Would that be Cotton or Increase? (A little Early American reference, there.)

#11 Perhaps "I love you mothers" was just something the wreckerator wanted on the record before being sacked.

May 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

I love how many of the great minds here immediately warped back to Happy Falker Satherhood. I loves youse all!

May 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterChazz

Congratulations Tricia! Happy Mather's Days to you indeed!!

I'm actually hoping for a cake wreck this year! Oh fine, just the cake but having a wrecky one would be awesome for I love a good laugh! Happy Mather's Days will be my new greeting for our holiday!

@Will-- me too! The name Mathers brings to mind only one person: Jerry Mathers as the Beaver! Gosh, we're old.

May 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCarol

I kinda like "Moom". Has a nice, jaunty ring to it.

May 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterApril Fool

To me, the issue with the I love you mothers is that it is a leeetle too close to a swear word that is often abbreviated as M. F.

May 10, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterlija

The second to last cake was obviously ordered by someone in a polygamist family. Thankfully, that word was not included in the order or the wreckerator's head would have exploded.

A bow on a skull? Enitrely too creepy for me.

Congratulations, Tricia! I hope all goes well with the adoption!

May 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTLC

CONGRATULATIONS, TRICIA & CO!
WOOT

@Sharyn I always love the complete song but usually one phrase just makes me roar with laughter.
today? "Mother cakes can blow."
Yeah.

@BADkarma I totally thought of Abby, too!

@Nyperold Stephen King reference for the win!

@Just Andrea no more CaffPow for you today! ;)

May 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara Anne

Some of those were actually rather pretty even though the spelling was way off lol. I would still eat them and happily so especially the one with the strawberries. How I love those. Plus that last cake was kind of neat lol.

May 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterArlene

I love this site---and the comments as much as the cake photos.
Tricia, congratulations!
Sharyn, amazing as always.
Shirley F--- great numbering system!
The "Happy Mather's Day" cake also made me think of Jerry.

May 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCarol

I would LOVE the last cake, as long as you took the ridiculous bow off the skull! Then again, I am an anthropologist who studies human skeletons. My sons tell me I'm weird. I think I rock though.

May 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJMB

@ Tricia - Congrats!
@ Jen, Sharyn, SuBee, Barbara Anne, Just Andrea, Craig, et al - excellent as always!

I *totally* support Just Andrea's plan for a week of Mother Days as originally suggested by SuBee!

Now, where's Haiku Joy? It's just not complete without one of her excellent haikus!

May 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKarateLady

I had to say ... about the bleeding writing on the strawberry cake.

When I worked at a grocery store bakery, we only had really sh***y piping gel and due to the cakes either having to much decoration on top, or fruit on top, or being frozen chocolate (wet when defrosting) or white like that, writing would only look nice on chocolate plaques.

Now I had a lady come in and buy a strawberry shortcake ... much like that one and she said absolutely no to a chocolate plaque, I explained to her that it wouldn't look good and she said she didn't care, do it anyway.

So, wadda ya know, I write on the cake and it INSTANTLY bleeds on the white icing of the cake and she FREAKS out and complains to the manager and blah blah blah. sheesh

May 15, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSiren

These cakes are perfect for practicing the skills every mother requires; looking on the bright side, ignoring the glaringly obvious goofs. "What a lovely bow, dear!", "You did those flowers just right!"
