What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Happy Mother's Day!

The wonderful thing about mothers is that no two are alike. Every one is unique and worthy of celebrating. So today, let's celebrate moms, in all their infinite, cake-appropriate varieties.

Some moms drive carpools...

...and some drive jeeps:

By Tuff Cookie Cakes

Some moms like relaxing at the spa:

By Jo of The Icing On The Cake

... and others like roughing it in the great outdoors:

By Pink Cake Box

(I know lots of moms who'd have a hard time choosing between those two, and others who would just consider them two different and undesirable ways to get covered in mud.)

There are crafty moms,

Sub'd by Rita F. and made by Meg Davis

... handy moms:

By Debbie Does Cakes

Moms who are masters of the kitchen,

Sub'd by Meghan B. and made by A Little Something Sweet Bakery

... or masters of take-out.

By Salt Cake City

There are moms who rock guitars,

By I Heart Cakes

and cradles:

By McGreevy Cakes, which has a video tutorial here.

So, for all the mothers out there, thank you for just being you.

Happy Mother's Day!

Today's doubly special because it's also Jen's birthday. So,

Happy Birthday, Oh Cakey Goddess of Most High Snark and Random Sprinkles!

Happy birthday Jen! Hope it's a great one!

I thought the building drawn on the side of the Chinese takeaway was a Dalek. I think there's a definite gap in the market for a prototype Dalek shaped like an East Asian building.

Refuse to believe the sewing box is cake. REFUSE. TO. BELIEVE!

First. Happy Birthday Jen. Thank you for making my day, every day.

Second, great happiness in seeing a beautful, happy, warm feeling baby shower cake. I had lost hope.

Many happy returns of the day, Jen! May your day be a happy one.

These are very impressive cakes, especially the sewing basket cake.

Jen, Happy Birthday. Thank you for all the wonderful cakes and laughs. Nothing will ever top naked mohawk baby carrot jockeys

It may be a trick of the eyes, but if you look at the crib and don't see baby spelled out on the doilies, the white space between the slats and the circles combine to spell poop.

Cake wrecks has pretty much given me an aversion to any cake that doesn't look like...well...cake. I now prefer round yellow cake with white icing, the simpler the writing and decor the better and I do not want a face of any kind, not even a simple smiley face, because I don't want to be even vaguely reminded of the horror of the cake baby slicing video.

I don't want cutesie cake in shapes of things and various colors of fondant. I could almost write an equation if I were inclined to do such a thing, but I think it's something along these lines: the more an item looks like anything other than cake the less likely I am to find it appetizing. I'd rather eat the poo swirliest cake that looks like a cake (scraping off most of the frosting of course) than any of the loveliest handcrafted baby cribs, kitchens, golf clubs, Hogwarts castle, cats (which would break my new rule against any type of face) or anything that doesn't remember a traditional cake.

My new cake snobbery only allows me to like topsy turvy cakes as an alternative to simply round cakes and also because the topsy turvy cakes usually inspire some really brilliant decorating (to my mind anyway) and usually don't seem to come with a face.

No faces.

Most Happy Birthday to you, Jen! As one who sews, I am amazed and in awe of the threads and needles one. Thanks to you and your crew for brightening our days with snark and beauty.

OK, not to take away from any of the beautiful entries for today, or from all the good wishes to the Moms out there..., but when I first looked at the baby crib cake, I swore the medallions hanging on the side said "poop." Perhaps it was the brown-ness of the crib...or the baby theme, in general. Then I looked at the letters actually inscribed on the medallions. *whew*

It's been a long time since I've had to deal with cribs and poop...but I am a very happy Mom today. Happy Birthday, Jen. Thanks for all the good times and chuckle-snorts.

FYI the Chinese take out box is probably a wedding cake since it has double happiness on it (used for weddings--see this pagehttp://chineseculture.about.com/library/weekly/aa120799a.htm).

Not Chinese, but have been to a Chinese wedding. :)

Happy Jen/Mother's Day! For sheer quality this is one of the best Sunday Sweets yet. Some of the most gorgeous craftsmanship ever, especially in that amazing sewing box, and the tool box, too. The spa cake was good for a laugh, with the wonderful green glop looking so much like icing (oh, wait, it IS icing. And not, too. Very clever.) Also love the perfect details of the VW Bus. I would have loved a car pool ride in one of those instead of all the station wagons we rode in. Unless you got to ride in the back seat, looking out the back window.

Actually, if you read the name badge on the Chinese takeout boxes it reads 'Elder Something', then the Chinese translation. It's the kind of name badge worn by young Mormon missionaries. I suspect this one is about to go off on a mission to China (or maybe Taiwan.) He's being wished good luck with a very stylish cake.

oh dear.... I don't fit anywhere. :(
got anything for Moms who read?

Happy Mother's Day (hey, we all had/have one so it goes out to EVERYONE)!!

Happy Birthday, Jen!!

May 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara Anne

I like the "roughing it" cake---I am one of the moms "who would just consider it two different and undesirable ways to get covered with mud." What a great line! I would much rather be using my sewing basket. (One of the most amazingly awesome cakes that I've ever seen on this site---and there is a LOT of competition!)

As a seamstress who sews primarily by hand, I HAVE to know-- HOW in the name of Bowie did they make lil' teeny fondant needles and pins?! That has blown my mind UP!

And I know I already said so on EPBOT, but happy birthday, girl! And I hope you had a great Mother's Day visit as well; you are so very blessed to have such a cool Mom in your life, supporting and loving you, no matter what. But I'm sure you know that. ;)

Your Pal,

Storm

I can't believe the tiny wedding cake on the kitchen cake! Wantwantwant! It reminds me of the teeny doll's house I decorated for the playroom in my daughter's doll's house (happy sigh).

I hope you had a most delightful birthday, Jen!

These are great cakes and I, too, am in awe of the sewing basket. Absolutely incredible!!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Mother's Day yesterday. I was enjoying the day with my hubby and daughter, hence my tardiness to this party.

These are all beautiful cakes, however, my favorite is the "great outdoors" cake. Since my family and I used to do lots of camping, I absolutely love.Love.LOVE the s'mores sticks at the top of that cake (loves me some s'mores, I do!). And I agree that seeing a cute baby shower cake is a refreshing change from the multitude of monstrosities we've seen on this site. Last but not least, major props for the kitchen and sewing basket cakes.

Happy belated birthday, Jen! I sincerely hope you had a great day celebrating your birthday and your awesome mom!

May 13, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAnne-Marie

I think the kitchen cake would be more fun if instead of the pretty three-tier cake on the counter it had a little cake shaped like a kitchen, and on the counter of that cake was a cake shaped like a kitchen...

May 13, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterjbrecken

I was scrolling through these beautiful cake photos with my preschool-aged daughter looking on. Suddenly she yelled out, "Poop!" at about the same time that I saw it. I'm glad to know we weren't the only ones who saw the hidden word on the baby carriage.

May 14, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMandi

I'm so excited to have been featured on Sunday Sweets again! The Chinese themed cake was actually a welcome home for a Mormon missionary who got back after serving in China for two years. It was so much fun to make! :) Thank you again, CakeWrecks!!

Is it just me, or does the cradle cake say "poop"?
