What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Mega Con-fusion

As you über fans/stalkers already know, John and I spent the last three days at MegaCon, a local sci-fi and comic book convention. (Yep, we're some of "those" people. HI.)

It was a delightful time, and we had a blast meeting lots of you readers, gawking at Star Trek celebs, and taking pictures of all the awesome costumes. In fact, after three days it's a little strange to see people NOT wearing rainbow wigs and light-up armor. I don't suppose some of you would carry around six-foot foam swords while I adjust back down to reality, would you?

Anyhoo, at every con there are always some costumes you can't ID - kind of like certain character cakes. (See, THERE's the segue you were waiting for.)

For example, I can almost guarantee you know who this character is, so see if you can guess:

Nope, it's not a skinned Princess Leia! Try again.

Give up?

It's this guy:

I guess you could say that cake really took the Mickey out of him. [Bah dum CHA.]

John and I saw TONS of My Little Pony costumes at the con, though thankfully no one subjected Pinkie Pie to quite this level of humiliation:

[wincing] Ouch. Let's get an official reaction on this one, shall we?

Pinkie? Your thoughts?

Yeah. Us, too.

We also saw plenty of Spider-Men ...

K, I give up: what is that head made of?

... Avengers:

Sad Jesus: THE ULTIMATE SUPER HERO.

(Yes, yes, I KNOW it's supposed to be Thor. Quit spoiling my fun, details.)

... princesses:

Though thankfully none with tentacles sprouting from their bazooms.

 ... and, of course, zombies.

 "Can YOU say 'CEREEEEEEEBROS'?"

Well, I'm off to sort through all my photos, so I'll leave you with an awesome wreckplica of everyone's favorite Darth-Vader-Riding-A-My-Little-Pony cake, which we printed onto pins, which we then gave out to any readers who found us at MegaCon, thereby completing THE CIRCLE OF LIFE:

Told ya it was awesome.

Thanks to Gretchen W., David S., James P.,  Santiago P., Mary, Analiese F., & Kathryn K. for the mega lolz. Oh, and if you guys want to see *my* costume from this weekend, plus all the pics I took of everyone else's, be sure to watch my other blog, Epbot!

I burst out laughing at that superhero cake! My second favorite thing about it is Iron Man's six nubbed hand.

Dear god, what ARE those things

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

Sad Jesus just supports the whole shape shifting thing, you know.

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterFluffy Cow

I thought the first cake was Norman Bates with the shower curtain on the right side!

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCathy

Wondering what Spider-Man's head is made from? Hmm... have you ever peeled the bright, smooth covering off of a mini Nerf football? 'Cuz that's what it looks like.

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterzoomom

Using a peeled chocolate Easter egg for Spidy's head, well, I guess he was a Scientist Egg Head. However, the price tag on the "Avengers" cake had me scratching my head. Was it $1,125, or more reasonably 1 dollar and12 and a half cents?

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterShirley Fowley

Okay, I have seen the Avengers, and I would have NEVER thought that was Thor. I too, wondered why Jesus was on that cake. It's so nice to have Jen clear things up for us :)

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKrysmon

Sad Jesus is sad because he has no nose.
Princess Tiana, on the other hand, wouldn't let such a small loss slow her down. Go ahead-take away her right arm. She'll just dust her self off, pump up her breasts and go forth to collect some healthy greens for dinner (I can't tell what that green thing is.) God knows what she'd be able to accomplish if she only lost her nose.

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSuBee

HAHAHA! Sad Jesus. That made my Lent.

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered Commentershe-she

I sincerely guessed "Green Hornet" for the first cake. I think it's like one of those Magic Eye illusions--you can see whatever you want; in this case, the "decorator" did better than they knew!

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

To be fair, the first one is very likely Joel's art work edible printed onto the cake.

EDITORS NOTE

We originally had a Luigi cake as the first cake in today's post but after a few comments saying that it might be an edible image, we decided to pull it. Jen's pretty sure it was a mistake on the baker's part but we can't find the original email to confirm. Ah, Mondays... -john (the hubby of Jen)

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterkymdydyt

Subee, I think the green thing is a frog

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

The first cake looks like a replica of a drawing of Luigi as done by the four-year-old. If that was the intent, it's kind of awesome of the parents to do that for the birthday boy. If not, well...

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterdutchgirl

Hey, not a comment about a cake (although "Sad Jesus" made me laugh), but about your con attendance . . .

My 15-year-old daughter is also one of "those" people. I am a "con mom"--I provide transportation and some funding for her to go to cons. We have only gone to ones within our home state (Texas). As a matter of fact, we are going to AggieCon in College Station this weekend, where George R.R. Martin and Ernest Cline will be in attendance. Texas A&M, believe it or not, is Martin's selected repository for his memorabilia. They receive a couple of boxes from him every coule of months.

Also, HBO is holding a special showing of the premiere of season 3 of "Game of Thrones" in College Station with an afterparty. You have to have tickets for that, and they are all sold out, as are the ones for the dinner with Martin.

Anyway, just wanted to geek out this morning!

OH NO! The zombies got Dora the Explorer! What great wisdom have they sucked out of that brain?

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterbassgirl

I'm so glad others are concurring with the theory that the first cake features Joel's drawing of Luigi. I really, really hope that's the case.

Also, I think I know what the Spiderman cake is modelled on. These ads ran on British TV when I was little: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYWOp-Ok3jA

And finally, to Zombie Dora. I can only imagine the horror on the little child's face when this one came out of the box. 'Happy birthday to me, happy birthday to m- eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhnononononononononoononononononoooooooo...'

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJoan

I beg to differ. Raptor Jesus is the ultimate super hero.

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBADKarma

Pretty sure the 1st cake is the birthday boy's artwork (if it's not, then that's an epic wreck).

I don't know if I should proud or sad that my 2 year old daughter knew that MLP cake was supposed to be Pinke Pie.

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKeri

To be "that person" ... "sesos" = "brains" as in smarts or intelligence. I think that poor pallid explorer is searching for cerebros

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda H.

I remember a song contest at a filk con, on the subject of "superheroes", with an entry about how Jesus was the singer's personal superhero. The audience reaction was politely positive but slightly strained. (It wasn't a bad song, but it wasn't particularly good either.)

If someone managed to do a costume with well-executed animated tentacles coming out of the bazooms, it'd be kind of cool, if brain-hurting. I don't expect ever to see such a thing, which may be all to the good.

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJoel Polowin

The saddest part about Cake Wrecks is that there's only one post for me to read a day. When I'm done, I have to wait a whole day longer for the next one. *sigh* What did people do before the internet and humor blogs? Life was probably very sad back then.

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterM. Dale

Spider man's head looks like a large plastic egg. You can see the seam. I have no idea what it is covered with!!

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMark

I also agree that the first cake is not a "wreck", but rather the child's own drawing which he would recognize immediately. I think it is pretty cool.

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAlison in Indiana

(Nodding sagely) The Spiderman head is a giant Kinder Egg. But, why?

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterFran_kly

I think the spider "man" head is actually from a football shaped pan if it's large. Otherwise, I'm thinking easter egg candy you would get seams either way. but I really think it looks like "spider-antz"

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDonna`

That's not Spiderman - it's Kermit the Frog cosplaying as Spiderman. Also, why does he have his hands tied behind his back?

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDave

I'm not so worried about Spiderman's head, but what happened to his legs? It's too bad that he has to be propped up with a chicken with Bugs Bunny cheeks and an Easter egg?
In fact my first thought was that it was one of the characters from ANTZ.

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterdrgns4vr

I agree with zoomom, definitely thought Spidey's head was a peeled Nerf football rolled in the mud. But I'm also concerned with his overall shape: is he supposed to be a Spidey-chicken for Easter?

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSammay

Cake #2 = Picasso Pony

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTrekkie Gal

@BADKarma-I agree. Raptor Jesus is the wallpaper on my phone.
@Mindy1-I think frogs may just count as healthy greens. Yummo.

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSuBee

The Sad Jesus cake would have been PERFECT if they had used black velvet icing!

If you cut off Spiderman's head, don't just stick a football on there and think people won't notice.

The Darth Vader Riding My Little Pony cake just has the be the result of a dare and, yeah, it is awesome!

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterpikkewyntjie

Was that supposed to be a zombie Dora??? ZOMBIE DORA????? Who intentionally orders a zombie Dora????

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSandy C in So Fla

When I saw the "Dora" cake, this popped into my head...We need YOUR help! Can you help us find the brains? You can? Great! Or maybe the cake was based on what Dora may look like after this movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnpTcrtsN3U

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterfluffy-girl

Did anyone else see an attempt at Munch's "The Scream" in the first cake?

@ Amanda H. Thanks for clearing up the Espanol. Seriously, "seeesos" meant nothing to me and I wasn't thinking of zombies yet. "Cerebrooooos!" on the other hand, makes me chuckle.

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTricia

What happened to the Luigi cake? I went back from Wreck-browsing to show my son (who loves MLP and Avengers) this post. I was shocked to discover that Mister Luigi from the Preschool Cake Decorating Co. had been replaced with Leia-dipped-in-pink-dye-with-name-tatoos-on-her-face. FTW?!?!?!?
Not that I'm complaining, that... that *thing* is pretty wrecky.

[Editor's note- Yup. Couldn't find the email to prove that it was professional. Ah well... -john]

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered Commentergianna

Spidey's head looks like a chocolate icing-covered Nerf ball.

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAnnaB

Poor Spidey -- that's a styrofoam egg. The texture, the shape & size all match perfectly, as well as the Easter theme. I like how the seam of the egg give him a subtle smile to amp up his personality.

And for cake 1B (no longer Luigi), why does Mickey have seaweed draped artistically across his cheeks?

Princess Tiana -- SOOO close to being perfect! If it wasn't for the awkwardly placed arm, I'd have been proud to have that one!

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPamtha

Did anyone give Inigo Montoya a heads up that it was Tony Stark that killed his father?

As a Children's Pastor a few years back there was a "Jesus is my superhero" themed VBS, I could see a "Jesus and the Avengers" cake coming out of that...(I know I'm such a spoil sport)

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBetsy B

I was first going to comment on the statement that the first cake is supposed to be Mickey Mouse, "It is NOT!" Skinned Leia was a preferable interpretation.

Then I saw Dora... What in the name of Wilton decorating tips happened to that poor girl's head????? I mean, as wrecks go, it was recognizable... until... I don't want to think about it.

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterGinger

That Dora cake is truly nauseating.

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNYCGirl

I don't know how you can mess up Minnie Mouse. If her ears are solid black, why would you think that two colors, neither of which is black, would be correct?

@FluffyCow, I am sensing that you are a refugee of the United Pentecostal Church. So am I. And yes, the whole mesomorph theory is pretty freaky.

@BadKarma, you are right. Raptor Jesus is the best super hero ever!

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTLC

I thought the first one was the Pink Panther. And Spidey's head looks like a Nerf football with the outer color-printed layer peeled off. And since when is Dora a zombie? What cartoons are kids watching these days? LOL!

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterEllen

Easter Spiderman! Yay. What any kid always wanted on Easter.

Though they are all pretty sad, the Mickey Mouse one let me sitting here with my jaw taking a trip of its own one floor below. Seriously?

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKat

OMG, can we have a CakeWrecksCon?!?! Everyone could dress up as their favorite wreck. I think it would be the most awesome thing ever.

Also, sad Jesus made my Monday. :)

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAmber K

I'm pretty sure that Spiderman head is an iced Nerf ball...

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterwergittep

Poor Dora, the wrecktastic indignities she had to suffer. Actually, I feel more sorry for the children who will be forever traumatized by these wrecks.

And how does MIckey even turn into Skinned Leia there? At least Zombie Dora was recognizable. You have to almost have a sort of twisted talent to create something that wrecky.

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMike

It *does* disturb me that Spidey's hands are tied behind his back. It also disturbs me that my phone autosuggests "tied" & "back" when I typed. "hands". O.O

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered Commenteranony mouse

I rather like the cake with Darth Vader riding a My Little Pony. I'm sick and twisted that way, I guess.

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCheryl

Yep, I'm gonna go with Easter egg for Spidey's head. But for some reason I keep thinking of Gypsy the Robot from MST3000: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3Je8aE_yv8

March 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPrincess Fiona

OK, no way is that REALLY supposed to be Mickey Mouse????
