What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

It's All Geek To Me

OK, I'll admit it. My family's a teensy bit tired of all my geeky quotes — and puns.

Look, I can't help it. They're all lurking in my head, just waiting to pop out.

But you're not tired of them, right?

Great! Then,

Shall we play a game?

Let's see how geeky we can make some otherwise not-geeky cakes.

Yes?

Shiny.
(BTW, if you didn't get that reference, stop reading right now and go watch Firefly. Wait, read the rest of the post, then go watch Firefly. All of it. Now.)

Some people might freak out when they see their angel cookie looking more like a Killer Klown.

Don't Panic!

You can always cover it with a towel.

But, to be safe, don't blink! Don't. Even. Blink.

(I know I'm not going to blink at all during tomorrow's Dr. Who special. Allons-y!)

So, anyway...

I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.

Why? Because you KNOW the end result:

Dogs and cats, living together. Mass hysteria!

Maybe I'm overreacting.

We should be able to get through a little betrothment cake without too much trouble, right?

C'mon, baker, make it so!

What? You thought I'd say "Engage?"

Nah, I was thinking more along the lines of one ring to rile them all.

Even I wasn't expecting the next cake.

Nobody expects such Spanish imprecision.

Now, I'll admit this last one isn't a cake, but it is a baked good, and I had to:

Wait for it...

She's bread, Jim.

Actually, I'm also seeing chocolate syrup and poppy seeds — although I'm not sure we're letting you see them.

I guess she's only mostly bread.

She's been mostly bread all day.

;)

I hope you enjoyed this geeky little side trip. If not:

WE APOLOGIZE FOR THE INCONVENIENCE.

A long, long time ago, in some bakeries far, far away, Meredith B., Sarah C., Amy V., Gabby R., Erin B., Carrie H., Lea S. and Stefanie surreptitiously slipped out their cameras and took these pictures, sharing cakes, their final affront, here. We salute you!

I'm with Kate - that's no Killer Klown, Mr. Bill has rung down the curtain and joined the Choir Invisible! (Oh NOOOOO!!!!). All hail the geekery cakery! Whee!

If she's all bread, there's only one thing you can do: go through her pockets for loose grains.

I'm so pleased to see that there are people out there celebrating Cuntlemas, the lesser-known feast of St. Cuntle, who was very nearly martyred by the Dragon of Sainsbury, and who personally wet himself at the Battle of Notting Hill.

I am trying not to bounce and clap at this!
Killer Klowns From Outer Space, Hitchhiker's Guide, and Doctor Who all for one cake?
Just the best. Thanks Sharyn!

I got most of these references! I've never been more proud. :)

November 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterErin KS

My geek cred is secure... I got every last reference. :)

Super excited for the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who!

I just assumed the pink-and-yellow cookie cake was another play on Benedict Cumberbatch's name.

November 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterWinona

I can't believe that last one... she's rude! Rude and not ginger!

November 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLD

Achievement Unlocked! I got every reference :D

@Kate; Oh NOOOOOOOooooo..... LOLOLOL

@Sharyn; I bow to your geekiness so sublime, too many funny to make so many comments,

We shall just settle for I LOVED CW today, and am soooo excited for tomorrow night.

@Classic Steve: Ummm...I don't know what you were watching, but I don' think "Firefly" means what you think it means. There IS another production running around with the same name; we mean the one starring Nathan Fillion as Capt. Mal Reynolds, created by Joss Whedon. That ring a bell? If not, search it out immediately; it contains some of the very best dialogue--including "shiny"--you will ever hear.

*Fangirl explosion in 3... 2... 1...* OHMYGOSHOHMYGOSHOHMYGOSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (<- I have a problem with caps lock...) Doctor Who, Firerfly, Monty Python!!!!!! (Unfortunately, I only understood these three. But I took fifteen minutes or so trying not to make my neighbors deaf with my screams of delight. I'm a nice person. Sometimes.) Also, I want make sure; is the Super Geek song to the tune of Super Chicken? The idea of nerdy Sunday Sweets (especially DW) would be fantastic!

November 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterOMNOMCAKE!!!

Ok, I know that cumpleanos means birthday - I guess (even with the hint) it didn't occur to me that someone would write birthday, birthday on a cookie. I'm sticking with the cuntleanos mystery. Something that Nurse Stein has on her birthday that we're not suppose to understand. And I don't want to know either - I'm sure that it's some medical horribleness and this cake really belongs with the foot fungus cake. However, I'm not sure I can ever sign Feliz Cumpleanos again! The song is ruined for me.

November 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

If you're going to cover Killer Klowns, you don't want a towel.
You want the Dickies.

As Uncle George "Oh MYYY" Takei often says, don't like unless you get it.

November 22, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterkhereva

I guess we can presume that Nurse Stein works in a OBGYN office and "leames" is some sort of birth-associated medical procedure? I don't think that was done to mine when I had my kids.

November 22, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterpikkewyntjie

Died laughing at cuntleanos lmao. Unbelievable. If they don't know how to spell it they really shouldn't guess. I am sure the birthday girl didn't appreciate it. I however laughed my butt off so all is good here hehe.

Why the censorship?

[Editor's note- A lot of our readers check the site at work or with their kids. It's our effort to make the site as family friendly as possible. Of course, we still got complaints about a misspelled Spanish word so there's that. In the wise words of Goldmember, "Zere ish no pleashing you." -john (thoJ)]

@OMNOMCAKE!!! - I believe The Midnight Writer's opus is based on Super Freak.

Sadly, I could hear the disco song in my head immediately...but I missed a couple of the geek references. On the other hand, I just re-watched War Games (that wonderful showcase of obsolete technology) a few days ago. :)

Note to self:

Never go in against Sharyn (or Jen) when geek cred is on the line!

Bring on the nerd-dom! We never tire of your nerdy references and puns. Thankfully, everyone in my family is a nerd, so none of us ever get tired of such things. I myself was one of the founding members, and first Vice President, of my college NERD Club (NERD: Needlessly Engaging in Recreational Dorkery). And my family used it be in SCA, which even my nerd friends (aka my friends) think is a bit much. But anyway.
And I'm still trying to figure out what a "cuntleamos" is. My brain ground to a halt when it processed the first four letters.

November 23, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterEmma

Today's (Saturday 11/23) Google Doodle is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Dr.Who--and it's ANIMATED!

November 23, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

You can post a cake that says, "Cuntleanos" but you can't show us bread nipples? Really?

I enjoy the site, but please, please ditch the censorship. Show us the cake or don't show us the cake (or other baked product). The black boxes are boooogus.

[Editor's note- Actually, we try to be family friendly. A Spanish misspelling that you would have to explain to your kids is one thing. A fully nude figure is another. In addition, we try to be work friendly. Again, a misspelling is far less likely to get you fired than a naked figure, even if it is bread. Sorry it bothered you. -john (thoJ)]

@sendingtheclowns - Shall we play a (Google Doodle Doctor Who) game? Thanks. :D

November 23, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterhyphen8

@Sharyn: you are welcome; it is my pleasure to "sing" your praises....
@SuBee-- :-)
@DB: lol...nicely done!
@Just Andrea: you're welcome.
@OMNOMCAKE!!!: hyphen8 is correct -- I should have added that notation. Sorry for the confusion.
@hyphen8: thank you for the clarification (my bad) and the link (and there's nothing shameful about instant disco recollection....)

i don't know what happened to that second cake that the "happy birthday" is broken like that. o'm trying to ignore that....stuff that makes it shiny.

and WTF is with with that bread woman?!

^That's the link to the "Who-ville" Doodle (not to be confused with the Grinch's "Whoville")! If it doesn't work, just Google it! I am quite out of the "Dr.Who" loop, but nevertheless found this extremely charming! =^~.~^=

Sure! I'll make the first move. There! Your turn! (Isn't this FUN?)
=^-.-^=

I'm *proud* to have passed with flying colors! And thank you thank you thank you for the giggles :) that was a bonus!!

November 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterXtineebee

I suppose the "cuntleamos" cake sort of makes sense in that it is X years since Nurse Stein popped out of her mother's... er, no, wait, it's still a bad idea.

November 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCheryl

The best part about #4 is that it's a double-reference: 2001 and Red Dwarf.
I don't know what kind of a geek it makes me, but when I read it I thought of the Red Dwarf scene with Dave & HOL first, then I remembered 2001. haha

November 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNerfbomb

I dunno I think that angel looks more like a flower or a hummingbird

Okay, I don't really think #6... Engagement Ring Cake... deserves to be here.

I mean I can tell what it is, the lines are straight, words are spelled correctly, piping is consistently-sized. I would have preferred if the band was done in gold/yellow icing instead of brown, and if it had a more rounded shape instead of squarish, but not bad overall.

Unless there was an inspiration pic that it doesn't live up to, the ring cake is, at worst, a Cake Meh, but definitely not a Cake Wreck. ;)
