What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

RED SOCKS FOR EVAH

Hey guys, john (the hubby of Jen) here. As a native "New Englandah," I felt it was my duty to pipe up today (heh) in celebration of an extremely momentous occasion. Now, if you would all kindly raise your glasses of Sam Adams...

{ahem}

[singing]

WEEEE AHH THE CHAMP-YUNS

WEEEE AHH THE CHAMP-YUNS!

WEEEE AHH THE CHAMP-YUNS

WEEEE AHH THE CHAMP-YUNS!

WEEEE AHH THE CHAMP-YUUUNS...

... OF THE WAAAAHLD!

This one's for you, Boston:

Wicked good game.

Thanks to Emily D., Lacey H., M.D., Emily F., Heather D., Laura M., & Nancy S. for pahking their cahs in the yahd.

Wicked Pissah Post!

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCC

I'm almost certain that the pink cake was done intentionally.
I'm just not sure it was meant to be vaguely offensive to gay men and/or straight women.

...and I say vaguely offensive because my husband had to explain why the "Red Socks" cake was a wreck.
Thank you, husband.

[Editor's note- Nah. If I remember correctly, it was just a fun cake made by a baker who knew nothing about sports. I think it was semi-intentional but I used it anyway. Because Red Sox. -john]

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSuBee

I managed to read the first cake as "IRS" and was wondering if the IRS took a sudden interest in baseball. I need more sleep.

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered Commenteranon

As a life-long Sox fan, I should feel offended by these cakes. But, after winning the World Series, these wreckerators cannot bring me down!!

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCathy

The pink cake was white until it was washed with a red sock.

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSharyn

Am I missing something about the 2nd cake? Everything is spelled correctly and looks well done. The white icing on the white icing is a bit odd, but it still looks good (and might be of different type?)

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterChris

As a life-long Sox fan, I love this post! It's the embodiment of "worst to first." Except it's more on the "worst" end of the spectrum . . . .

Go Sox!

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterChris

Thanks Subee, and thanks to your hubby too, because I couldn't figure out why that one was a wreck either. Bwah Sharyn! Hee football is fabulous! I think the worst wreck though is #1. It looks like a massacre and they were the losing team and not the champions.

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJodi

That pink cake is going to make me laugh all weeknd. Football? Someone is not very patriotic. Or maybe too much of a Patriots fan.

The pink brought back wonderful memories of when "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" made over several Red Sox players after they won their previous World Series. It was especially fun to watch them get their back and chest hair waxed off.

Someone must be imprisoned, though, for creating those green sox. I wouldn't wish those on anyone -- not even the Yankees.

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTLC

I'm a New Englandah too!!! Way to go Sox!

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJoJo

Well, john(thoJ), that's one way of looking at it.... In this neck of the woods it was reported like this: It was a close series, yet the Cardinals were able to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory and triumphantly come in first right after the winner!

[Editor's note- HA! I love it, mel. -john]

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermel

@Sharyn:
I LOVE your red sock/pink cake connection! =^~.~^=

(Now, if only there were some semblance of sanity in the scrawled message....)

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

While I'm not a Boston fan, I did find today's post quite amusing; especially the pink cake with "football is fabulous!"

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLisa

I'm disappointed in y'all. No reference to the blue ball in #4? Yikes, that's a Jon Stewart joke just waiting to happen.
In other matters, on my walk in to work this morning, I passed a pile of dog poo on the pavement, and my immediate reaction was 'oh, there must have been a baker going past here'. Clearly I've been reading this blog for too long.

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterColin M.

Hahahaha :D

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

@SuBee - I couldn't figure out the "Red Socks" cake, either. I was thinking, "It's well decorated, everything is spelled correctly, it's centered nicely - I don't see anything wrong!" Wasn't until I read a clue in the comments that I figured that one out :p . And I should know better.

@Sharyn - Hahahaha, brilliant comment!

I'm a Minnesota Twins fan (they've been a wreck themselves the past few years!) and the Twins are in the American League, so I was rooting for Boston, too. However, some of those players' beards just got gross-looking towards the end of the Series...

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAnne-Marie

This post was wicked awesome. I think I need to go watch Game 6 again and see David Ortiz get his well-earned MVP.

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDeirdre

The socks on the second-to-last wreck aren't red. Just sayin'.

(Running away giggling).

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBADKarma

@SuBee: I'm right there with you. I honestly had no idea why the one cake was a wreck until I started looking really closely at the other cakes. I was momentarily distracted by the miraculous occurrence of a cake without any spelling errors. :)

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermillbrit

ok, totally non-athletically oriented, and seemingly blind too...
'splain me why the first one is a wreck, please?

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDBC

As a (near) St Louis native, I have to say: I love that comment, Sharyn!

Seriously though from the city that uses HARRRD R's to the city of NO R's: Congatuliations!!

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered Commentershannon

just one correction...it's pahked their cahs in HAHVAHD yahd. :)

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNicole

Here in Boston, we're so excited about baseball that today we're putting up a statue of Bill Russell in City Hall Plaza!

[Wondering what's wrong with cake #2? Remember: Google is your friend]

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterajay

Ohhhh, duh on #2. Maybe Joseph is more of a Bostonian footwear fan than baseball.

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDonna Harris

Oh. Here I was thinking Joseph's cake was a wreck because it reads, "BOStON". In my defense, the team was named that after the color of their actual socks, so in continuing to call them Red Sox, we are only encouraging poor spelling, are we not?

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJust Andrea

@ Just Andrea("...in continuing to call them Red Sox, we are only encouraging poor spelling, are we not?")
Well, sure! But if you were to even think of taking a swing at a name-change THIS late in the game, you'd totally strike out. The idea wouldn't even make it to first base. (I know! I know! And here I am, a groan woman.)
=^>.<^=

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

@DBC: I don't have any athletic bones either, but let me try to take a stab at this one, anyway. Hmmm...WELL, it looks as if someone already DID take a stab or two at it, quite literally. ANYway~ that one is a Technical Wreck because, while it is TRYING to "be a baseball", it in fact looks like a crime scene.

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

If anyone pahks theyuh cahs in Havahd Yahd, they'll get towed to Sommahville... or so the rest of that saying goes.

I'm a Pennsy girl, born and bred, but got transplanted to the Boston area at an impressionable age (14)... and found I had to develop at least a mild local accent, just so I wouldn't have to spend all my time answering the "Wheyah ah yew from?" questions. My children, especially my son, have a much more pronounced accent, as does their dad.

Just remember, John (thoJ) - don't forget and leave your khakis in youah khakis! Always put them wheyuh yew can find 'em again, or yew won't even be able to staht youah cah.

And, to close, YAY SOX! First time in 95 years to win the Series at home! About time.

Yay for a john(thoJ) post!

@Sharyn ~ My family all wore pink socks for awhile for that exact reason! o.O

@mel ~ I think you and my brother would get along great! He says stuff like that all the time! Wait...are you related to anyone in WA???

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJodee

@Just Andrea, you are soooo right. Someone finally spells something correctly and their masterwork gets labeled a wreck. No wonder we end up with "congratulions."

@Sharyn-perfect.

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSuBee

I thought the first one was BS at first glance, not RS. I though it was one of those coughs they do in movies.
"We are the champions"
"*cough* BS *cough*"

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAussie tree

To be fair, the Red Socks cake is actually spelled correctly. It's not the baker's fault that Bostonians are apparently all slightly illiterate. Or spell things like they're texting.

And no, I'm not a bitter Cards fan. I'm a bitter Rangers fan. I just thank God it wasn't the Yankees.

I should probably close with something nice about the Red Sox for John. Um...well, they ARE the second-best baseball team money can buy. ;D

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJ

Wicked awesome! Go Sox!!

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAlison

@john(thoJ): thanks...hope springs eternal, and, as our Cubs fans always say...wait until next year....
@Jodee: as a matter of fact...my dad's brother and his family lived in Walla Walla many years ago....

November 1, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermel

Lmao. Love these cakes. Not too horribly wrecked today. I am still haunted by last weeks evil vajay jay cakes lol and I was warned. No cakes were harmed in this house on Halloween at least.

November 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterArlene

Sharyn and mel = my heros!

P.S. go Cubs! (I'll never have to deal with all this World Series hooplah.)

November 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterZippy

I was so pleased to hear the Red Socks won their Rounders Tournament!.......What would I know, I'm British and pretty cheesed off we weren't able to make our annual trip to Boston for Halloween this year, it would have been great to see all the hoopla (hooplah?). Took the tour of Fenway Park last year, would love to see a real game one day.

November 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCaroline B

*look at #5*
*blinks*
*brain explodes*

Seriously, there are so many things wrong with that cake I don't even know where to start mocking it...it's just too horrible!

November 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNerfbomb

The best.

November 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJennwith2ns

The "Football is Fabulous" one made me crack up.

November 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPrudynce

Wow, those just get worse and worse as you go. Touchdown for the Boston Red Sox!!
