What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

It's Baaaa-aaaack

Yesterday I sensed a great celebration in the Force. As if a billion stay-at-home parents suddenly cried out, and then poured themselves a margarita.

Oh, is school back in session?

 Thaaaat explains it.

Plus, now I know why I've been seeing cakes with random office supplies thrown on them:

Oh! And what "TOSCHOL" is!

That black square with the red squiggle, however, remains a mystery.

Now, kids, I know it may not seem like it now, but going to school really is a good thing.

For your parents, I mean. Sucks to be you!! Haha!

Ahem.

I'm sorry.

What I meant was, education is an important, vital aspect of your development, and the places we go to receive our education should be treated with the proper respect.

Now, is it easy? Of course not! After all, these places will make you [shudder] "Back ---- To The Books (Study)":

You have no idea how much I'd like to scratch out "books" and write in "Future." Then I'd replace "study" with "McFly."

Oooh, cake graffiti! Why hasn't this been done before??

[NOTE: I here at Cake Wrecks do not endorse, condone, or solicit illegal cake defacing.]

[Unless you're paid to do it.]

[Glad we cleared that up.]

['Nother Note: I'd give you $5. Just sayin'.]

Anyway, if it helps, kids, know that adults go to school, too.

So, you know, you've got that to look forward to.

Look, bottom line:

Totally.

So run along and have fun, dears! I think today I'll sit around and play Mini Ninjas while eating Marshmallow fluff straight out of the jar. Degree-holding adult, right here! Stay in shool!

Thanks to Wendy F., Doug, Marissa S., Megan C., Kristin J., Lucy C., and Allison V. for the education.

What makes the Mississippi cake even more sad and pathetic:

"The Mississippi Governor's School is a residential honors program established in 1981 at Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, Mississippi by the administration and faculty and by Governor William F. Winter.
MGS is designed to provide academic, creative and leadership experiences for a select number of rising high school juniors and seniors who have demonstrated exceptional ability and achievement in their studies and who show high intellectual, creative, and leadership potential. "

Margaritas. That's what I left off the back-to-school list.

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMetzgirl

As a homeschooling parent... I think I shall celebrate by eating an entire can of store bought icing.

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterFluffy Cow

'Oooh, cake graffiti! Why hasn't this been done before??'

It has been. Every time one of these muppets get their hands on a cake. Sheer vandalism.

I will never get over the fact that a) these cakes are out for sale and b) people apparently buy them.

What a world.

Is it just me, or does anyone else hear Grover saying 'Mississippi Grovenor Shool'? Huh, huh? Anyone??

Oh...and the first one totally looks like perm rods...just sayin'.

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJennifer

The Mississippi baker left out the "s" in "Grosvenor."

Mastermind says shool too! you are not alone!

Seems to me like that black square with the red squiggle could be a chalkboard with an apple on it. But that's so abstract it would just be crazy!

After all these misspellings, I'm suddenly noticing that school is a kind of weird looking word.

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJBee

Is that edible chalk?
It reminds me of when toys/prizes came in a cereal box.

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCC

I *think* the black square with a red blob on it is a graduation cap. But then again since the creators of many of these cakes need to go back "toschol," it really could be anything but a graduation cap.

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterChristina

I can't believe they spelled Mississippi right! They were probably singing M I crooked letter crooked letter I ....

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMegan

The black square with the red blobette represents the black hole of ignorance one falls into if they fail to pursue and education and drop out of schol.

As a stay at home parent, I'm sorry to see my daughter return to school. However, I will take one of those margaritas to help me overcome my sadness. Now let's join together in a toast: skoal !
(yeah, I know its mispelled too,)

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSuBee

I'm confused. Are those cigarettes on the first cake? Pretty sure THOSE weren't on the school supplies list. But then again, my oldest just started second grade yesterday. His school supply list is understandably less innocuous.

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnna B

On the first cake, I'm getting cigarettes. Back to school cigarettes. I'm surprised that's not on more supply lists.

I want to be a Grovenor when I grow up.

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMimiheart

So does this mean from now on I spell Mississippi em-eye-ess-ess-eye-FIVE-ess-eye-pee-pee-eye?

And you know there will now be guerrilla wreckerators out there, surreptitiously correcting mistakes on cakes, right? You know that, right?

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMelonie

I think the black square was an E (or other letter) they added in error, and they turned it into a blackboard with probably and apple on the ledge! That is what it looks like to me!

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLisa

HAHAHAHA This is classical. Plus, college teaches you how to subsist on high-sugar foods, so yesh! STAY IN SCHOOL!

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterStoch91

Yes, I also believe the black square is a chalkboard with an apple in the corner. Does it's reeeallly look like one? No. Am I a wee bit concerned for myself because I immediately thought I understood what it was supposed to be? YES.

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJD

I think the black thing is a mortarboard with a red tassel. But that doesn't quite make sense for someone going BACK to school.

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterClassic Steve

Yeah...I thought the first one looked like tampons. Ew.

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnony M.

Sadly, I am a stay-at-home parent with twins going into the second grade who don't start school for two more weeks, because our school system is wimpy. I need margaritas WAY more than any of you. (But apparently I have not been driven TOO insane by my darling little scene stealers, because I still can't tell what these cakes were supposed to be. There's hope yet!)

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

I can name some governors who would spell "governors", g-r-o-v-e-n-o-r-s.

Now the word "governor" looks completely wrong.

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAmy'sMom

YIKES! I actually went to Mississippi Governor's School (approximately one million years ago), and yes, as An. noted, it's for high school students who have done well in school and completed a fairly rigorous application process.

Presumably the wreckerator didn't go to Governor's School. Please don't judge the whole state!

Shool daez, shool daez... Dhier old gouldin rool daez... O_o

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBADKarma

Lulz, I wonder if they hire droupouts at some of these places as an act of charity :D

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMINDY1

Amazing so many foreigners have learned English. My kids had to learn to spell the street we live on, Schocalog Rd (pronounced shockalog) before going to School (skool)... try explaining that to a 6 yr old. Hey Jen, Thanks for answering my "On Purpose" email, YOU ROCK or maybe YOU CAKE is better? Anyways keep em coming. Must go make angel food and eat it all before the hubs gets home, yummmmmmmmmy

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKimberj

at first glance, i didn't see the black blob points on the "pencils" on number one. I had to wonder--firecrackers? drumsticks? tampons? how pale and urine yellow they are...

the black square on the ugly, shiny red cake--a graduation cap? isn't that jumping the gun a little since school hasn't started and they can't even SPELL it?

Is adult school where you go to learn to be a grownup?

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterhmm

I went back to school, so I actually start before my daughter does. But it's college, I could totally fill my stainless water bottle with margarita and bring a jar of Nutella for snack.

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermanybellsdown

I think those stick-y things on the first cake are, maybe, perhaps, possibly, supposed to be, if you turn your head in a certain way and cough, squint your eyes....pencils? pink rubber eraser ends with pointy black lead?

cigarettes, yes, i can believe that, too. chalk, maybe. swords, crossed swords at dawn, ok.

but i think albino pencils might be what they were going for.

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterErin

Okay, after reading through these, I am very happy to see that there is at least one other soul out there who thinks the first cake looks like someone tossed tampons on it. Now, excuse me while I toss my cookies - urp!

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterVickie

Our school doesnt teach us vital skills. We learn how to write on the bathroom walls and that pot gives you man-boobs.

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAli

I find it highly ironic that they managed to spell Mississippi properly and fumbled on Governor's School.

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterStephanie

Oh, I know! The black square is to cover up the extra letter L the wreckerator put there, totally by accident. They covered it up because misspelling a word on a cake would be just, you know, embarrassing!

Also: your first paragraph made me laugh out loud! Although you'll feel it again in two weeks, in honor of lots of us California moms... Cheers! :)

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermichelej

Let's face it: Those things on the first "cake" are doobies.

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBADKarma

I'm wondering why there's string cheese on the first cookie cake. Is that like cheese on apple pie or something?

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKristers

@Melonie - It would be like A Man, A Plan, and a Sharpie - but with pastry bags.

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCaren

Ah, there'll be another tremor in the Force the day after Labour Day, when all the Canuck kidlets gallop (or drag themselves) back to class...

Perhaps it's because I haven't slept well all week, but I thought the first cake cookie was covered in shotgun shells. "Back to school, or else!"

I feel sorry for the students of the San Mateo Adult School, class of '08. Here they are, having clawed and struggled their way up from functional illiteracy to earning their general equivalency diplomas. They've endured the humiliation of their former ignorance, as well as the jeers of the people who encouraged them to drop out in the first place. Yet they stayed the course, knowing it was all worthwhile because employers just don't hire people who can't write proper English.

Then the cake arrived.

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNaomi

@hmm: I am a college graduate, but I never attended "adult school;" I guess that explains my continued love of toys, kids' books and dressing up for Halloween. Of course, I do pay my bills on time and I do my grocery shopping on a budget, which I thought might make me an adult . . . but I guess it's true that anyone can do those things . . . as long as they actually paid attention in upper elementary school math class!

As for the cakes . . . they are atrocious! For the record, my first thought upon seeing cake number one was "I'm going to have to go read the comments so I can find out what those might be!"

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterIkwig

What gets me is that they clearly *fixed* the spelling on Mississippi (the traces of the P still show behind that awkward S) but still managed to miss the rest of it.

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterChrys

I would totally buy one of these cakes. I work at a junior college and yeah, that spelling is probably as good as it gets.

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterPee Jay

At first I thought YAY they spelled Mississippi correctly and then I noticed the 5. : (

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKaren

i seriously swear that black box thing with the red squiggle is the Necranomicon from Army of Darkness. If you look closely you can see the face that is on the front of the book. Can we say Clatu Berata... Necktie, Nickel, Nectar...ahhh snap what was that word.

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSara P

The first one looks like someone dropped tampons on it.

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRenee

I get the random office supplies, but what do the tampons on the first cake have to do with going back to school?

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKaren

OMG! *excited flailing!* You're playing Mini Ninjas! I don't know if you remember, but I was the one who posted about it forever ago over on Epbot! http://www.epbot.com/2010/04/bio-shocking.html

SO happy that found it, whether I was the impetus or not. It just seemed like something you would love . It is the only video game I've ever purchased for myself.

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLisa

oh my...i misread the label for the "shool rocks" cake, and i thought it said "my c**k tonight?"
but no..it says WHY COOK tonight.

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered Commentercandycanehead

What the heck you get MISSISSIPPI right but you can;t spell Governor's School? (Even if the wreckorator lives there, I know people that live there that can't spell Mississippi) And the little black box with the red squiggle cake..... ummmm.... why did they only write on the TOP of the cake? There is a while nother half of a cake to mispell things on!

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnAngelDisgraced

@Anna B: I thought those were cigarettes too! I was about to leave a comment about that and yours caught my eye. So it's official: They are cigarettes.
