A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

I'm in Richmond,Va, about 30 mintues from the epicenter. It was AWESOME!!! Glad no one was hurt, but it was amazing to have felt that.

Yeah, I think the cake looks too slanted on a really really bad, sharp slope. I guess the icings are getting down already and ahead of the birthday party....
LOL! It totally cracks me up that if an earthquake happens in Cali, everyone shrugs and goes on with their day. But if it happens of the east coast, it's the dawn of the apocalypse!
Well, that piece "missing" being such a perfect wedge with a fake frosting stripe between the "layers" should be the first clue that this isn't really a wreck.

Where were you when the earthquake hit? I was removing a 4 tier anniversary cake from my CAR!!! The car started rocking and I thought I had left it in Drive instead of park . Couldn't decide whether to leave the cake or snatch it out before the car took off!!! Wild!! The cake was delivered without damage:)

All the earthquakes, tornadoes and alien spacecraft impacts in the world couldn't explain that extraneous "Ke". I keep looking around for an 'n' or an 'ith' or some other clue that could solve this mystery, yet there is none to be seen. While I'm aware that it might have been (read as: almost certainly was) made to look like someone took a slice out of it (thus explaining the missing 'n'/'ith'/whatever), I have never ever seen anyone cut anything in that manner, ever. So I'm not buying that.

Almost positive this is a Great American Cookies cake. I work for the company and we've got one just like it. The cake itself is fake, but the icing on it is real. The cake was probably in the display so long the petrified icing just fell off. It happens sometimes.

I don't think that's a cookie cake at all. It has shadows, and looks more like a chocolate chip chocolate mousse or something. Either way, it was definitely intentionally made to look like a slice had been taken out.
@Lemony: I agree. Cookies -- especially chocolate chip cookies (there's a "CCC" I can love!) -- should be at least a bit lumpy/irregular; cutting them flat like most storebought cookie cakes kind of makes them look like a cicada-infested moonscape, IMHO.

I live a short distance from the New Madrid Fault Line.... we tend to not notice quakes around here, really.
East coasters: sorry, but to a native Californian, like me ( feel free to throw rotten eggs and fruit here) unless it's a 6.5, we don't even get out of bed. Otherwise, we roll over and say, "another bloody earthquake" and roll over and go back to sleep. Call ms when you get a real earthquake, and we will call you when we get winter and/or a hurricane.

I am a California girl, and when we get 5.8 earthquakes, the east coast doesn't even mention it! Here, that size quake wouldn't even get me out of my bed. Evacuated buildings??? BIG BABIES!
So funny! I was so glad that someone else thought it was necessary to call attention to the Ghostbusters reference. I use that all the time too and get funny looks...along with book-stacking references, etc. It's so nice to know that there are others out there who would get it if we happened to be standing near by. Ghostbuster Nerds...UNITE! And slime something!

I know the west coast is laughing at us running through the streets panicking at such a small quake. But let them suddenly get a blizzard and they'll know how weird and unnerving these unusual events can be. Though not as weird and unnerving as that cake/cookie/thing.
"Appy H Birth Keday" might be how people say "happy birthday" when in a earthquake.

CA gets snow and blizzards most winters. It's called the Sierra Nevadas. You know, those mountains that are bigger than yours. ^^
Now if the SF area or LA area gets a blizzard, then yes, we're screwed. But honestly, when that happens the world is ending. So look for signs next December. ^^
Two giant cookies with an equal-thickness layer of frosting in between. (Ok, the example is fake, but the concept is what I'm exploring.) I don't know whether to be appetized or revolted. I would like to see two giant chocolate chip cookies with a layer of ice cream in between. No cake tie-in; I just think such a thing should exist. For as long as it takes to eat, that is.
Now two large, crisp, chocolate cookies with a layer of frosting in between would be like a giant Oreo. (Heads toward kitchen, stroking chin...)
Here on the Left Coast, I just wait to see if the shaking continues past 30 seconds. If not, no need to get up. If it does continue, nothing can safely be done until the shaking stops anyway, so still no need to get up. (I'm not a sloth -- the foregoing assumes a quake during normal sleeping hours, which is when they tend to strike, for some reason.)

To the CA people who are being earthquake snobs: do you live on an island covered in skyscrapers and/or are you surrounded by people who flashback to the 9/11 attacks? No? Then stop being so judgmental.

Its not that it was a HUGE earthquake...but when we havent had one that big in over 100 years...its kinda crazy. I wouldnt think Ca. people would make a big deal out of one that "small" but you get them all the time!! If one little tiny tornado rolled through Hollywood, I think you would all freak out too!
As for evacuations, yeah I think it was kinda silly seeing how it was the strong, but imagine your high rise building shaking like crazy, on the east coast, where your first thought is not "oh, just another earthquake".

This is the Hth time this has happened to me.
As a resident of Christchurch,NZ, we've have had 17 earthquakes and aftershocks magnitude 5.3 and above since September 2010 and thousands upon thousands of smaller ones. I sympathise with anyone who experiences an earthquake. They can be scary! We know first hand that the magnitude isn't necessarily indicative of the effect - our 7.1 earthquake had no casualties, but a 6.3 one killed 181 people and flattened buildings :-( Note 6.3 isn't that much bigger than 5.8.
On a cake related note I catered cupcakes for a friend for a wedding and my goodness the 5.3 earthquake that hit us that day was extra scary when I imagined all my cupcakes shaking off their stand - thank goodness they were all fine!
