What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Whirled Series

And now your Sports History Minute, brought to you by Cake Wrecks. Because they know soooo much about sports.

On this day in the year 1900, St. Louis chose a new name for its baseball team: the St. Louis Cardinals. This was a vast improvement over their last name, the St. Louis Perfectos, which I am totally not making up.

Little did the St. Louisianites know that "Cardinals" was nearly impossible for most bakers to spell.

Who ya gonna call?

Imperfecto!

(see what I did there?)

Also, it was soon discovered that their mascot, Fredbird the Cardinal (still not making this up), was nearly impossible to draw:

Although he does kind of look like a Fredbird.

(And that's a bird you cannot change!)

Skip forward 111 years to the day when, by a stroke of luck, squirrel-about-town Irving* happened to dash across the home plate during the pitch at a Cardinals game. When the Cardinals then won the game, it was decided that Irving should be their new, unofficial mascot!

Because that makes total sense.

*May not be his real name.

Everyone was thrilled, with the possible exception of Irving, who is a squirrel and therefore couldn't possibly give a rodent's posterior about the whole thing.

Most excited were the bakers, because now they could stop trying to draw cardinals!

And draw little red gumball machines on slightly demented "squirrels," instead!

They also shortened the impossible-to-spell "Cardinals" to "Cards," because "Cards" is much more squirrelly.

But most importantly, bakers were able to break out their favorite #2 tips and brown icing and finally squeeze out a mascot St. Louis could be proud of:

See? Totally killed it.

Plus, I think even Fredbird would agree that flaming/bloody tail is a vast "impoovment."

Thanks to Steve J., Diana W., Robin D., Hawaii B., M+G., and Hannah M. who tell me that's a cake only a Texas Ranger could love.

I'm confused. Were the Arizona Cardnials football cakes supposed to be St. Louis Cardnials baseball cakes? That's awesome, but not as good as a New York "Ragers" hockey cake that was supposed to be a Texas "Raggers" baseball cake.

I love this website and have become a devoted follower. I must say the flaming bison with the large zit on it's head was priceless. Ps. My 10year old son howls with laughter at all " poo" cakes.

Rally Squirrel's name is Buschie after Busch Stadium where the "Carnials" play.

Fittingly, there is an e coli outbreak in St. Louis right now, and one of the symptoms is bloody diarrhea.

Yikes more poop cakes. Why do the wreckerators insist on brown frosting?? And to think I used to love chocolate frosting but seeing these I am switching to vanilla lol.

I guess I didn't read #4 as a buffalo because there's no guy riding it. (Cue that song again...oy.)

That third one is not a Louisville Cardinal, either. I don't know what it is. (From a KC girl, lived 4 years in St. Louis, now in Louisville) (Go Royals! - oh, heck, we always lose, so Go Cardnials! )

Do you know how much it hurts when you snort a mango smoothie up your nose due to a baseball-sorta post? Now going to find something to take for my headache.

The Rangers cakes will be posted on 11/16.
Interestingly enough, that's the day AFTER J & J (thoJ) have their last TX stop.
(no one needs to bring up last time, do they?)
Until then, no TX or Rangers wrecks.

Sincerely,
Orlando (who sees them 11/22)

Why are the Cardials blue?

Kids:

It's St. Louisan, not Louisanite, or whatever.

The squirrel's unofficial name is Nutty. (as nutty as...)

So glad I found a cupcake at my local baker that only had a plastic ring squirrel on it. I don't do poo animals.

Looking forward to your trek here...hope I can make it to Left Bank on Washington!

To John in your editor's note about speaking squirrel-

Did you get that from the Emperor's New Groove? If you did I have to say I am very excited to find a fellow fan. If you didn't I must ask you to watch. Then you can really learn to speak squirrel. Oh, and as always I love this post. Jen, you created the only remotely enjoyable aspect of baseball since I have been forced to watch all week by the man of the house. Please keep entertaining me. You're both the best. :)

[Editor's note- Of COURSE I've seen ENG. It's my favorite Disney film ever. Say it with me now... "Pull the lever! ... Wrong lever!!!" -john]

I'm coming back to this post because THE CARDNIALS ARE THE 2011 WORLD SERIES CHAMPS! WOO HOO!! Love me some Cardnial poo squirrel cakes!

Ooh, good point about the e coli. And as for the wish for a Clydesdale cake, can you imagine how much chocolate "icing" you'd need for one of those?

October 31, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterWishtonwish

The rally squirrel is what won the "Cardnials" the World Series. I think it is great there are cakes in his honor.

November 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLeAnn

Hey look, you reused my "Cardnials" cakes picture that I sent and you featured a couple years ago when the Arizona Cardinals were playing in the Super Bowl. Damn, I'm a double wreckporter!

November 3, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDi

Maybe the last one was a salute to Albert.

November 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCubFan

That's a...a... FLAMING poo squirrel. I never thought the words poo, squirrel and flaming could be put together in one sentence.
