What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: So Stinkin' Cute

This week we're featuring some of the sweetest, cutest, most adorable, lovable, um... [consulting thesaurus] darling, bewitching, and fetching baby animal cakes you ever will see. Why? Well, if you must know, I'm feeling a bit sensitive this week.

This is john, by the way.

So, let me just get my box of tissues and we'll do this thing. Starting with Jen's favorite:

Found at the 2008 Orlando ICES Convention; baker unknown.

The hand-painted shading here is amazing. And the animals are adorable. And the lion isn't eating the zebra or the giraffe. So it's a win-win-win.

This cake is slightly more realistic:

Sub'd by Hilda F., and made by The Sweetest Thing Cake Studio

See how the monkey and giraffe cower in fear as the mighty tiger stalks his prey? Can you feel the tension? Can. You. FEEL IT?!?! No?

Maybe it's just me.

And now... sweet sleeping dragon!

Sub'd by Amelie B. and made by her sister Helene

Awwww. Okay. *sniff* I'm all verklempt. *sniff* I promised myself I wouldn't cry...

[blowing nose]

Hey! Look! Pandas!

Sub'd by Aljona and made by KralleCakes

And not just any pandas; these are the rare Russian Nesting Pandas. The mostly eat eucalyptus leaves and borscht.

Preeeesenting, the sweetest giraffe ever!

Literally. I think the lack of neck really adds to the adorabletude, don't you?

And because I have an inordinate affection for tigers:

Sub'd by Jade D. and made by Theresa Gue

So. Cool. Jen says this reminds her of some Lisa Frank folders she had in middle school. Which she claims is a huge compliment. So there.

And you know what else has stripes? (I am the king of segues)

Sub'd by Brenda B., and made by Lilo Taart

I'm digging the bow and the vintage 20's hair part. Just dandy!

And speaking of bows. (I'm on a roll!)

By Aletha B.

Baby Cthulhu!! AAAAAUUUGGHH!! SOOO CUUUUTE!!

And get this: this is Aletha B.'s first cake. Yes, really! Mike, Duff, and Bronwen better watch out, 'cuz Aletha B.'s coming, and she's got a Cthulhu.

And speaking of... cake. (Okay, that one wasn't my best work.)

By Ann N.

Adorable. And hip. Oh. Yeah.

Another of Jen's favorites:

Sub'd by Orna G., and made by Odelia

Hand-painted rosebuds, cuddly teddy bears, and a miniature cake on cake? I can bearly stand it!

And finally, for your viewing pleasure, allow me to present...

a unicorn with a comb-over:

Sub'd by Elizabeth A., and made by Sachi Swick

You're welcome.

I absolutely LOVE the baby cthulhu cake and can't believe that's her first modeled cake. She's got tons of talent!

And I love the 2nd zooborn book!

Cheers,

(Also, if I win I'd like the second book please)

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTechie

Wow, looking at all these sweetened my Cheerios, for sure! I must find a better sound to make than "Awwwwwww". These cakes were scrumdidillyumptious!!!
Either book would make me happy, but since I have a new baby girl, I'd probably go with the first if I had my druthers.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJasry

I need, need, need one of these to keep my cakewrecks book company!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDLC

Adorable cakes! Baby Cthulu was my favourite. Kind of like the Zooborn book for babies is my favourite (I rock the segues too). I'd give the book to my nephews because they're cute babies (again!).

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterParonomaniac

I love todays Sweets! They are too darling for words!

I would be happy winning either book. I have an animal-crazy niece who loves to read; so, either book would be wonderful to win!

Thanks for the opportunity!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLianna M

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKatie

check out the ears on the second book... i am faint from all the cuteness . *squee*

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commentertangeria

I love the second book. Zoo Borns is so wonderful! As great as the cakes!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterForgotten Fancy

the second book :]

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCalvin

The "fuzziness" of the teddy bears is a great effect. How did they do it? 'Cuz fuzzy wuzzy isn't very nice on the tongue, so it's got to be frosting or something, right?

I'd like the zooborns book for everyone, but would happily take the kids version if that's what you got left, to read with my god daughter.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCatalyst

I want the second one! -deborah

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterD

I'd love the second book. This Sunday Sweets page was adorable...what do you think my chances are of convincing DH we should have another baby just so I can have cakes like that for the shower and first birthday?

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterElizabeth Spinner

I would like the second zooborns book. I hope it is as cute as the cakes today!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDavida

I'm in squee overload! The unicorn! The pandas!
I'd love either book, but I'm an adult (allegedly) so I suppose I'd choose the 2nd one

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterChristine

I. Need. The panda cake. Need it.

And I love the second Zooborns book. It's (wait for it...) awwwww-some!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAllison

I Love both books!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterEPVCCorier

My feelings can only be summed up by a lengthy keysmash.

*deep breath*

\\\\\\\O///////

Ahem. If I get a book, I may audibly keysmash. Yeah I don't know what that would sound like either.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBethany

OMGosh, the kiddies would love the Zooborn book.

And I can't get over the unicorn and his comb over. It's stinking precious!!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNot Supermom

I think the nesting pandas just take the cake! Thanks for sharing these beautiful designs.
Either book would be great...and I'll be giving it to my niece, who wants to be a "puppy and kitty doctor" (her words) when she grows up!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGracie

*snort* at the combover comment. That'll be a classic ;) I can't decide which is the cutest though, they are amazing!

As far as the book draw goes, I would love to throw my name in the hat for the second zooborn book!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterPhoenix

I like the first book...because my son was just born on Tuesday and he needs to expand his library :)

The baby Cthulhu cake is amazing. I guess I need to learn to effectively decorate cakes before this time next year, because my little guy definitely needs one of those!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterFruppi

I prefer the second!

Carmen

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterstringends

Both books are adorable. Cakes are adorable too. I love baby the Cthulu cake,my brother would be so proud that someone made that.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBecky

I like the second book.. :) and the unicorn is fantastic! :)
i will also note that i had to order a cake the other day for my mother's birthday. i wanted something with dragonflies on it. And, it took every bit of self-control i possessed not to order a cake with the words "purple dragonflies" piped onto it in green frosting. :D

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLauren M

How cute! I'd love either of the books

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMegan G

I must find a way to keep my daughter from seeing today's post. When she sees this much cuteness she may try to decorate the nursery for Bean (my future grandchild) in fondant!

Would love the kids' book if I win.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGale

I think the first Zooborn book is perfect! I have to say my I'm with Jen, my favorite cake was the first one. So peaceful...since you know the lion was controlling himself.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterThe Porters

LOVE baby Chthulu! Also would love either of the Zooborns books. They're one of my favorite websites.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commentertarichuck

Those are clearly Japanese tarepandas.

Which I have loved for YEARS.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMarji

Zooborns? Cake Wrecks? Together under one digital roof?? Oh PINCH ME!! What an awesome way to top off a week spent getting to know my weapoms-grade-adorable newborn son after lo those many months of him inside me...oh heck, I think I'm'a gonna asplode in rainbows!! (double ones, even!) ;-)

Which book...which book...um, the second? The first? Who cares, it's Zooborns!!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDenita TwoDragons

These are absolutely wonderful Sunday Sweets! They always are, but these are super great. And my kids' lovies were all represented - giraffe, tiger and zebra - and all so cute! (I can't overuse the term "cute" this week - because they're all just so cute. Cute-aliscious in fact.)

Either of those books would be wonderful, but I'd probably go with the kids' book if I won.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJRM

OMG! OMG! OMG! Cute animals cakes AND a chance to win a Zooborn book? Can my Sunday get any better? (I guess so, if I would win the second book for grown ups with a kid's heart!)

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSweetKaro

I would love the second zooborn book for my son.

LOVE this post and I think the Teddy Bear Cake is the sweetest!
