What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: So Stinkin' Cute

This week we're featuring some of the sweetest, cutest, most adorable, lovable, um... [consulting thesaurus] darling, bewitching, and fetching baby animal cakes you ever will see. Why? Well, if you must know, I'm feeling a bit sensitive this week.

This is john, by the way.

So, let me just get my box of tissues and we'll do this thing. Starting with Jen's favorite:

Found at the 2008 Orlando ICES Convention; baker unknown.

The hand-painted shading here is amazing. And the animals are adorable. And the lion isn't eating the zebra or the giraffe. So it's a win-win-win.

This cake is slightly more realistic:

Sub'd by Hilda F., and made by The Sweetest Thing Cake Studio

See how the monkey and giraffe cower in fear as the mighty tiger stalks his prey? Can you feel the tension? Can. You. FEEL IT?!?! No?

Maybe it's just me.

And now... sweet sleeping dragon!

Sub'd by Amelie B. and made by her sister Helene

Awwww. Okay. *sniff* I'm all verklempt. *sniff* I promised myself I wouldn't cry...

[blowing nose]

Hey! Look! Pandas!

Sub'd by Aljona and made by KralleCakes

And not just any pandas; these are the rare Russian Nesting Pandas. The mostly eat eucalyptus leaves and borscht.

Preeeesenting, the sweetest giraffe ever!

Literally. I think the lack of neck really adds to the adorabletude, don't you?

And because I have an inordinate affection for tigers:

Sub'd by Jade D. and made by Theresa Gue

So. Cool. Jen says this reminds her of some Lisa Frank folders she had in middle school. Which she claims is a huge compliment. So there.

And you know what else has stripes? (I am the king of segues)

Sub'd by Brenda B., and made by Lilo Taart

I'm digging the bow and the vintage 20's hair part. Just dandy!

And speaking of bows. (I'm on a roll!)

By Aletha B.

Baby Cthulhu!! AAAAAUUUGGHH!! SOOO CUUUUTE!!

And get this: this is Aletha B.'s first cake. Yes, really! Mike, Duff, and Bronwen better watch out, 'cuz Aletha B.'s coming, and she's got a Cthulhu.

And speaking of... cake. (Okay, that one wasn't my best work.)

By Ann N.

Adorable. And hip. Oh. Yeah.

Another of Jen's favorites:

Sub'd by Orna G., and made by Odelia

Hand-painted rosebuds, cuddly teddy bears, and a miniature cake on cake? I can bearly stand it!

And finally, for your viewing pleasure, allow me to present...

a unicorn with a comb-over:

Sub'd by Elizabeth A., and made by Sachi Swick

You're welcome.

I'd like the second book, but I would take either one! ADORABLE.

I <3 that giraffe cake!! And I would really <3 to have that first book... I think my daughter would enjoy seeing all the baby animals!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKaty

Awwww my gosh! The cuteness!

Also, the second book looks like it'd be great for painting inspirations. ;)

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDakota

I love the cakes, they are so cute! I love both books. I love babies of all kinds.
Bonnie

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBonnie

The first book. And I LOVE both the unicorn and the sleeping dragon. SO cute!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJill Dater

This is definitely what I needed to make my cranky day better. I absolutely loveeeee the little 3D giraffe cake. :) I love both of the Zooborn books. I'm a student, who works as a librarian in college, that would make the kids smile even more. Baby animals always make the day better.

ha. Librarian and student by day, pastry chef by night. Couldn't get any better!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNotYourEvilLunchLady

oh, we would prefer the second book!
But only because we can't have a cthulu cake and are sulking.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSophie

Our little Gavin kept running over to look at the book covers, pointing at the baby tiger, and saying (as loud as humanly possibly), "Moooooooowwwwwwwwww!" So I guess our vote will have to be the first one. :D

The second book for people who like cute stuff is for me.
Baby Chthulu...@_@

This is such an adorable post, and on my birthday, at that. What a lovely birthday present. :)

I'll throw caution to the wind: the second Zooborn book catches my eye. Of course, I think I would die from the cuteness, which isn't really a bad way to go.

The pandas are adorable! My kid sister loves them.

She also loves baby animals...so she'd love to win a book!

What I think is cute beyond cute are baby animals with just the *tip* of their tongue sticking out of their mouth!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterbabyblue1217

First of all, the stacked pandas cake? SO FLIPPING CUTE!!! Now, about the free books...;) I would absolutely love the 2nd book...If ya could. =)

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCheressa

Baby Chthulu for the win! Aletha B. has a definite future in sugar-art.

I like both books and would happily squee over the adorableness of either one.

The texture on those teddy bears, btw-- AMAZING. My piping hand cramps just thinking about it!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRachel

The baby Chthulu is The. Cutest. EVER. What a fantastic job!!!

Would love to win either book!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBrigette

The adult one please :D

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commenternafreelove

Either book - I work for an infant program for children with developmental delays, so would be donating either to the program library.

I'd take either of the Zooborn books, but that tiger one is pretty darn cute.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJan

Wooszer! Went to a baby shower yesterday but no cake was as cute as what you showed. I loved the teddies but the pandas looked like they might have been squished!
I would be honored if I won and got the second book!!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCarol Lee

My daughter (who is 10) loved the giraffe cake!! Adorable! And if I happen to win, I'd like the grown-up book, please. :)

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

The second book looks awesome, but I would be thrilled with either one. Love this blog!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAndrea

Both of them look cute, but I would have to say that I would like Zooborns, not the one with the exclamation point.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterFor the Love of French

Ahhhh, so cute! I just love the dragon I want to curl up with it! I do have kids, but either would be great! (cute overload!!!!!"It's so fluffy, I'm gonna die!")

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAlynda

the cover on the first zooborn book is toooooo cute! but since everybody else is asking for it, I'll ask for the second one because it is sure to have just as many cuties on the inside!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterHeather T

I would love the second book.
Or the baby chthulu cake. which i really thought was awesomely adorable until i scrolled down a little more and saw the extra tentacles around the bottom border of the cake. oh man. cute overload explosion!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commentercrownring

I'd love either one, I think my son would love looking at the animals in both, but I'd want the first book since he's still a little guy.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKrystal

My daughter would love the first one!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGina F. Fonner

Nothing like a contest to get all the (normally silent) lurkers to come out of the woodwork!

I do hope that the reason you're feeling sensitive this week is a GOOD one. Because the rest of us, if we're feeling low, can come to Cake Wrecks for a much-needed (and appreciated) giggle, but... what would you guys do?!

And now to comment on the cakes.

#1 is seriously cute. As in how-do-you-cut-into-it cute! I've never seen a blue lion or zebra, but when they're that cute, who cares about accuracy?

#2 If those are marzipan critters... yum! Like the monkey's banana. And this is a perfect example of a suitable baby shower cake. No actual BABIES to cut into (the animals are more stuffed-animal style rather than actual-animal like).

#3 Dragons, snails, bumble bees, lady bugs, roses and toadstools.... soooo cute. (Although the M-F CW fan in me is wondering if the dragon's sleeping because of one of those fungi!)

#4 Ooo, if you like that one, then I do have a cake photo to send in to you! That was a very nice abstract panda cake, and loved your comment about nesting pandas! Although... you do realize that koalas eat eucalyptus leaves and pandas eat bamboo? Love the idea about them eating borsht though. (yummm... borsht.... I need to buy some beets and make some!)

#5 Cute giraffe... and yup, further proof that if you do it toy-cute enough, nobody's going to quibble on the biological accuracy.

#6 Wow, that cake looks so realistic! Such a cute tiger! But with an alert adorable expression like that, I'd hate to cut into it. I like the cartoon style critters better...

#7 Tee hee, what a cute zebra! See, here's a perfect cartoon style cake

#8 Aletha, that's awesome-- you definitely have a good baking/decorating future-- Sunday Sweets all the way, never a Wreck in sight! Soooo cute. I would never ever EVER have expected a chthulu being a candidate for cuteness or cake, but this proves I was wrong

#9 This would make an awesome stuffed animal!!! That hippo is adorable

#10 Nice pun. Love the fur-- beautifully done in a cake-appropriate way (unlike some wrecks we've seen here). Interesting that the cake inscription is in English, while the baker's logo is Hebrew (loosely translates as 'Odelia: Ephemeral cakes created'. I think; my Hebrew's not that great). PS I went to her website (www.odelia.co.il/) to check my translation, but it's all in Hebrew... however LOTS of seriously cute cakes there

#11 A hippo-corn with cupcakes on a cake--seriously cute. And I bet all the fondant haters must thrilled with the frosting-ed cupcakes as an option!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAliza

Aww, I want the first zooborn book for my daughter... and any of those cakes for her first birthday!!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDarcy

OMG those cakes are too cute!! Also I'd love the second book!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJulie P

My Daughter would love the first book, but either would be fun!

Thanks for all the work, this site always makes my day!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

The zebra cake is so cute. I would love the first Zooborn -for kids. I'd give it to my 8 yo niece who wants to be a veterinarian!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCarrie

Considering I spent the best part of my christmas holidays on all fours playing at (fiercely growling, prowling) tigers and lions with my little nephews, I think they would love the first book! IF...they'd get a look at it 'cause chances are I wouldn't be able to part with it...

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermaryquitecontrary

So much sweet cakey cuteness! Love both books~for me or the kids!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKaren Chartier

I think the second book would be cuteness overload!!
Love all your descriptions about the cakes too!! LOVE that DRAGON!!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCinethia
