Fashionably Sweet
May 2, 2010 Clothes may make the man, but they're more like the icing on top of the woman. Which sounds much kinkier than I intended. Erm. What I mean is, we're looking at cool Fashion cakes today. So let's do that, and stop thinking about icing-covered lady bits. Not that *I* am, of course, but I know you probably are. (Filthy buggers, the lot of you.)

Some of you may be wondering where all the shoe and purse cakes are. Well, truth be told, you sent in so many great examples that I didn't know how to choose! Plus, I honestly prefer the more abstract fashion designs like the ones above. These tend to require more design creativity than an exact one-to-one replica. Granted, exact replicas can require more skill, but the purse and shoe thing has been SO popular for SO long that, much as I hate to say it, I'm kind of bored with them. Sorry.

Too lazy to email because I'm 10 days shy of my due date with my 3rd kid. Next Sunday is Mother's Day, in case you want to use that as a theme (nudge nudge)

To me, this looks like the kind of cake a woman of about 30 might have if she got tired of the old can't-find-a-decent-guy routine and decided to have a big estrogenfest fake wedding party anyway. (Hey, it's a LOT easier that way!)
If anyone knows the story behind this cake (which is very pretty), do tell, please!

Areth was FAB U LOUS at the inauguration and made all of the "Big and Very Important Women" in their down jackets and wind blown straggly hair look like the Hoi Paloi.
She was beautiful and dressed as befitted the occasion.

I'm sorry, but I just don't understand the last cake's figures on top. The girl looks like a guy in drag (heavy on the makeup) and a SHORT frilly dress with exercise pants (or what are those)? The question mark on the shorter groom's face is beyond me. MUST have an interesting story behind this one to want it on your wedding cake. The rest of the cake is nicely done. I see this as a borderline wreck.

Wonderful!! I think the first one is the star, that one would truly be a shame to cut into! It's such a wonderful adaptation - detailed the perfect amount! (my wrist aches thinking about all that piping!)

The blue satin cake is incredible. I won't want to cut it. I hope the baker made a sample cake to display.
Please do a Sunday Sweets Shoes and a Sunday Sweets Purses in the future. (Since next Sunday is Mother's Day, perhaps honor the world's most famous mom and her equally famous purse -- Queen Elizabeth.) You may be tired of them, but they are fan favorites. The bakers deserve the fanfare.

OMG that last one is TOTALLY a Betsey Johnson inspired cake and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! AHHHHHHH!
I'm a terrible perso, because the roses on the fabric draped cake are incredible and the fabric draping is incredible, but.... I don't see Athena. I see a really incredibly well made zombie. And now I kind of want a beautiful zombie cake of my very own with impeccable fabric draping and undead roses. It's gorgeous. I'm just clearly in a new corpse state of mind.
I see that no one understands the final cake that is definitely my favorite this week.. If you know Betsey Johnson, you'd get it ;) She is and AWESOME fashion designer who, yes, wears short frilly skirts, tutus, bright colors, and leggings a lot of the time, and she is now in her 60s! She is not married.. so it was not a wedding cake. I have no idea what it was for..but it's very 'Betsey'. She's an awesome inspiration, a breast cancer survivor, and she's not afraid to be herself. She's one of my personal heroes. And I LOVE that cake.. I was immediately reminded of this ad.. the skirt was SOOO inspired by that. As a matter of fact.... that event is what this cake may have been for.. hmmmmm

I'm with the others-- as amazing as all the other cakes are, it is that last cake, with the unknown groom, that has my curiosity piqued to know the story behind it. I was thinking along the same lines as A Paperback Writer because it looks like some kind of Celebration of Self, but if so,why have the groom at all?

Like Elizabeth, I'm not quite getting the fabric-draping cake. In fact, to me it looks like a big tipsy tower of soft-serve ice cream. :( And I definitely don't see any human(oid) form in it. It must not be my day.
Love the first cake. I was thinking, if I ever got married, I'd want a Harajuku themed wedding, but didn't have very good ideas on how the cake or dress would look. Now I do.

That second one is amazing! It honestly took me awhile to figure out that it was a cake and not a dress. Now where is the dress? I want to wear it!

Maybe not next Sunday, but in May or June you could run the graduation cakes theme and cake wrecks. My son is graduating from high school this month, and since he is a computer "geek" in the most talented way, I have been looking for a computer or technology cake online. I have found some BAD-D-D-D-D ONES and one super great laptop cake from smallthingsiced.com out of the UK. CHeck it out.

What a beauty that blue swirly one is! I can't imagine the work that took. As for Aretha's hat, the cake is awesome and so is she. I'm guessing fat-haters are the ones criticizing the photo of her. Fat or not, she's got more talent in her hat than all the haters put together.

I would like to see a world monuments theme sometime. You know: Eiffel Tower, Roman Colosseum, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Sydney Opera House, etc. Sweets or wrecks, that category would be awesome!
