What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Fashionably Sweet

Clothes may make the man, but they're more like the icing on top of the woman. Which sounds much kinkier than I intended. Erm. What I mean is, we're looking at cool Fashion cakes today. So let's do that, and stop thinking about icing-covered lady bits. Not that *I* am, of course, but I know you probably are. (Filthy buggers, the lot of you.)

The inspiration:

The Sweet result:

Submitted by Eliza P., & made by her friend Abigail. Lots more pics here.

Those gates are piped royal icing; the epitome of the word "fragile." In fact, all of that detail is painstakingly hand-piped. Just amazing.

Sub'd by Katie S., made by Jill's Sugar Collection

I think I just heard the sound of thousands of women giving a collective, "oooohhhh!" And yes, I joined in.

Remember the hat Aretha Franklin wore to Obama's inauguration - the one with its own FB page? Yeah, that one. Well, it was also honored on her birthday cake:

Sub'd by Meredith R. & found here. No baker credit, though. Anyone know?

Aretha got plenty of snark for both the hat and this picture, which mystifies me - I think they're both awesome. Besides, doesn't the Queen of Soul deserve a little more R-E-S-P-E-C-T?

Natalie M.'s wedding cake has some of the best "fabric" draping I've ever seen:

If the Greek goddess Athena ever took on cake form, I bet she'd look like this. [dreamy sigh]

The fluid lines on this next one remind me of a full skirt mid-twirl:

Sub'd by Ashley B., and made by Marina Sousa of Just Cake.

Love the satin-like sheen, too.

A dress cake is kind of like the grown-up's version of a doll cake. You get all the girly prettiness, minus the tacky synthetic hair getting in your icing.

By SusieHazCakes

Also, note how the dress form does NOT look like the torso of a woman with her limbs hacked off; it looks like a dress form (see the bottom of the stand underneath?). This is what we in the biz call "a win."

Or, if you want the ruffled skirt but not the entire dress, how about this?

Sub'd by Brianna G., & made by Collette Peters)

Squee!!

[UPDATE: Since so many of you asked: Collette made this for IN Style Weddings Magazine, and it was inspired by the famous designer Betsey Johnson, who is single.]

Some of you may be wondering where all the shoe and purse cakes are. Well, truth be told, you sent in so many great examples that I didn't know how to choose! Plus, I honestly prefer the more abstract fashion designs like the ones above. These tend to require more design creativity than an exact one-to-one replica. Granted, exact replicas can require more skill, but the purse and shoe thing has been SO popular for SO long that, much as I hate to say it, I'm kind of bored with them. Sorry.

I haven't decided on a theme for next week yet. Have one to suggest? Or a cake to nominate? Then send it to me at Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com.

Too lazy to email because I'm 10 days shy of my due date with my 3rd kid. Next Sunday is Mother's Day, in case you want to use that as a theme (nudge nudge)

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAhmie

I know you said you were bored with them, but why not do a whole separate post on shoes and purses, just to placate the masses?!
LOVE that dress form one. Fantastic!

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterknitwit

I'm so happy to see that first cake featured! :3 YAY!!

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAlice

I love, love, love the first dress/cake. Part of me wants to wear the dress, but the chubby girl in me really *REALLY* wants to eat the cake.
I also love the blue "satin" cake. What could make it shine like that? Beautiful!

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

Ha ha, I saw the very top of the Moitie JSK on my LJ friends page and thought this was on EGL for a minute. Loved the Iron Gate cake when the girls made it, still do. Beautiful work.

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

The blue one makes me want to cry, it's that pretty.

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMamaChristy

Thank you so much for choosing to post my cake this Sunday~ <3 (I'm the one who made the iron-gate cake :) )

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAbigail

Haha I really like the question mark on the grooms face on the last cake!!!!

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMarissa

Holy...

No words. Those are STUNNING.

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

That blue cake is unbelievable. I'm not sure I could eat it, and that's just wrong.

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJennifer

What's the story behind the munchkin groom with the big question mark on his face?
To me, this looks like the kind of cake a woman of about 30 might have if she got tired of the old can't-find-a-decent-guy routine and decided to have a big estrogenfest fake wedding party anyway. (Hey, it's a LOT easier that way!)
If anyone knows the story behind this cake (which is very pretty), do tell, please!

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterA Paperback Writer

I am totally in awe of all of these

and I agree
Areth was FAB U LOUS at the inauguration and made all of the "Big and Very Important Women" in their down jackets and wind blown straggly hair look like the Hoi Paloi.

She was beautiful and dressed as befitted the occasion.

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterUpupaepops

Sunday Sweets is the icing on my week.

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterBrooke

Sigh~ So pretty. I want to make a cake now but I'm pretty sure it won't even come close to any of those!

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterHeidi

Just fantastic!

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterChristy

I'm sorry, but I just don't understand the last cake's figures on top. The girl looks like a guy in drag (heavy on the makeup) and a SHORT frilly dress with exercise pants (or what are those)? The question mark on the shorter groom's face is beyond me. MUST have an interesting story behind this one to want it on your wedding cake. The rest of the cake is nicely done. I see this as a borderline wreck.

Wow. These are amazing!

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterThe Boob Nazi

Wonderful!! I think the first one is the star, that one would truly be a shame to cut into! It's such a wonderful adaptation - detailed the perfect amount! (my wrist aches thinking about all that piping!)

They are all beyond gorgeous, and I can't blame you for preferring these to replica heels and purses ;)

fabulous!

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

The blue satin cake is incredible. I won't want to cut it. I hope the baker made a sample cake to display.

Please do a Sunday Sweets Shoes and a Sunday Sweets Purses in the future. (Since next Sunday is Mother's Day, perhaps honor the world's most famous mom and her equally famous purse -- Queen Elizabeth.) You may be tired of them, but they are fan favorites. The bakers deserve the fanfare.

@ A Paperback Writer -- What a great idea ... a wedding reception without the groom. More cake for us girls!

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTricia L

Oh, PLEASE!! Not something as scary as Mothers Day--(Pregnant-belly cakes...things-that-look-like-expelled-placentas cakes)...

Shoes & purses too yawny?
How about seeing if there is -anywhere in the universe- a Triple Crown cake, honoring the gorgeous ponies of racedom?
(They wear horseSHOES...and the prize money is called the "purse."
Sneaky, ain't I?)
=^~.-^=

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

@Paperback Writer: You defined and put my thoughts into words. That's exactly what I thought the last cake was about!

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterjanet2buns

OMG that last one is TOTALLY a Betsey Johnson inspired cake and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! AHHHHHHH!

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLet The Wookie Win

I'm a terrible perso, because the roses on the fabric draped cake are incredible and the fabric draping is incredible, but.... I don't see Athena. I see a really incredibly well made zombie. And now I kind of want a beautiful zombie cake of my very own with impeccable fabric draping and undead roses. It's gorgeous. I'm just clearly in a new corpse state of mind.

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterElizabeth

I see that no one understands the final cake that is definitely my favorite this week.. If you know Betsey Johnson, you'd get it ;) She is and AWESOME fashion designer who, yes, wears short frilly skirts, tutus, bright colors, and leggings a lot of the time, and she is now in her 60s! She is not married.. so it was not a wedding cake. I have no idea what it was for..but it's very 'Betsey'. She's an awesome inspiration, a breast cancer survivor, and she's not afraid to be herself. She's one of my personal heroes. And I LOVE that cake.. I was immediately reminded of this ad.. the skirt was SOOO inspired by that. As a matter of fact.... that event is what this cake may have been for.. hmmmmm

Do some Mom themed cakes next week in honor of Mother's Day in the USA.

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterGina A.

I'm with the others-- as amazing as all the other cakes are, it is that last cake, with the unknown groom, that has my curiosity piqued to know the story behind it. I was thinking along the same lines as A Paperback Writer because it looks like some kind of Celebration of Self, but if so,why have the groom at all?

Sounds like a Wreckie interview is called for!

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterBev(QB)

Like Elizabeth, I'm not quite getting the fabric-draping cake. In fact, to me it looks like a big tipsy tower of soft-serve ice cream. :( And I definitely don't see any human(oid) form in it. It must not be my day.

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterNora

Love the first cake. I was thinking, if I ever got married, I'd want a Harajuku themed wedding, but didn't have very good ideas on how the cake or dress would look. Now I do.

For those wondering about the last cake it looks like Let the Wookie Win was right it was designed for Betsey Johnson for her Spring 2009 collection (and is a gorgeous cake) :)

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJess

That second one is amazing! It honestly took me awhile to figure out that it was a cake and not a dress. Now where is the dress? I want to wear it!

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterandygirl

@ Trisha L and Janet2Buns -- glad you see my point. :)

@ Let the Wookie Win-
In no way did I mean to put down this cake; it is obviously well-done. I just figure there must be a story behind it. It does makes sense that the decorator has much personality herself. Do tell us the tale of the question mark groom if you find out more!

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterA Paperback Writer

The Sunday articles are always so astonishing. On the same delicious wedding gown theme, there is this Ukrainian baker who made his bride a cake to wear, or a dress to eat, you decide.

Gorgeous blue cake, and I agree, how on earth does Aretha and that hat get snark? Amazing! The Greek goddess Athena, however, would have much better sense than to parade around looking like a mashed up pastry. What a wreck!

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterNick

Maybe not next Sunday, but in May or June you could run the graduation cakes theme and cake wrecks. My son is graduating from high school this month, and since he is a computer "geek" in the most talented way, I have been looking for a computer or technology cake online. I have found some BAD-D-D-D-D ONES and one super great laptop cake from smallthingsiced.com out of the UK. CHeck it out.

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Aw, that first cake is a win for Lolitas everywhere! XD

Though it IS a cake, so it SHOULD've been sweet lolita.... I'll let it slide cuz it's so purty. ;)

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered Commentergyaruface

How DO they get that pearlized look into that stuff????
It looks almost as if it's been airbrushed with some fancy-dancy automotive paint. Not sure I'd eat it, but it sure is purty.

=^-.-^=

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

What a beauty that blue swirly one is! I can't imagine the work that took. As for Aretha's hat, the cake is awesome and so is she. I'm guessing fat-haters are the ones criticizing the photo of her. Fat or not, she's got more talent in her hat than all the haters put together.

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterGeisha_Girl

these are really impressive! every single one of these--how amazing!

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMarianne

How 'bout a Mother's Day theme? Since it'll be Mother's Day and all...

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLisa M.

The blue cake is quite possibly the most beautiful cake I have ever seen. Everything about it is perfect.

Forget about Aretha's hat... isn't anyone going to notice that she is being ATTACKED BY A ZOMBIE?!?!?

Who let him into the party?

(heh heh)

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAndrea

That last cake is not a true wedding cake, but everyone's right - it was for Betsey Johnson. http://www.instyle.com/instyle/package/general/photos/0,,20351917_20349462_20751952,00.html

Oh, you're BAD!!! But I can't stop giggling; I went back & looked again, and said to myself, "Ohgosh! She's right!"
Not to worry--Aretha can just push him into her hat cake and smother him. (Can you kill zombies with cake?)
I LOVE Aretha like a hero.

Please do a mother's day theme for next Sunday

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I would like to see a world monuments theme sometime. You know: Eiffel Tower, Roman Colosseum, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Sydney Opera House, etc. Sweets or wrecks, that category would be awesome!

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Wow. That blue cake is amazing. I honestly think it's one of the most beautiful cakes I've ever seen.
