What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Fashionably Sweet

Clothes may make the man, but they're more like the icing on top of the woman. Which sounds much kinkier than I intended. Erm. What I mean is, we're looking at cool Fashion cakes today. So let's do that, and stop thinking about icing-covered lady bits. Not that *I* am, of course, but I know you probably are. (Filthy buggers, the lot of you.)

The inspiration:

The Sweet result:

Submitted by Eliza P., & made by her friend Abigail. Lots more pics here.

Those gates are piped royal icing; the epitome of the word "fragile." In fact, all of that detail is painstakingly hand-piped. Just amazing.

Sub'd by Katie S., made by Jill's Sugar Collection

I think I just heard the sound of thousands of women giving a collective, "oooohhhh!" And yes, I joined in.

Remember the hat Aretha Franklin wore to Obama's inauguration - the one with its own FB page? Yeah, that one. Well, it was also honored on her birthday cake:

Sub'd by Meredith R. & found here. No baker credit, though. Anyone know?

Aretha got plenty of snark for both the hat and this picture, which mystifies me - I think they're both awesome. Besides, doesn't the Queen of Soul deserve a little more R-E-S-P-E-C-T?

Natalie M.'s wedding cake has some of the best "fabric" draping I've ever seen:

If the Greek goddess Athena ever took on cake form, I bet she'd look like this. [dreamy sigh]

The fluid lines on this next one remind me of a full skirt mid-twirl:

Sub'd by Ashley B., and made by Marina Sousa of Just Cake.

Love the satin-like sheen, too.

A dress cake is kind of like the grown-up's version of a doll cake. You get all the girly prettiness, minus the tacky synthetic hair getting in your icing.

By SusieHazCakes

Also, note how the dress form does NOT look like the torso of a woman with her limbs hacked off; it looks like a dress form (see the bottom of the stand underneath?). This is what we in the biz call "a win."

Or, if you want the ruffled skirt but not the entire dress, how about this?

Sub'd by Brianna G., & made by Collette Peters)

Squee!!

[UPDATE: Since so many of you asked: Collette made this for IN Style Weddings Magazine, and it was inspired by the famous designer Betsey Johnson, who is single.]

Some of you may be wondering where all the shoe and purse cakes are. Well, truth be told, you sent in so many great examples that I didn't know how to choose! Plus, I honestly prefer the more abstract fashion designs like the ones above. These tend to require more design creativity than an exact one-to-one replica. Granted, exact replicas can require more skill, but the purse and shoe thing has been SO popular for SO long that, much as I hate to say it, I'm kind of bored with them. Sorry.

I haven't decided on a theme for next week yet. Have one to suggest? Or a cake to nominate? Then send it to me at Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com.

OK, the cakes were great, but I have to know...Where can I find that dress? It is absolutely driving me nuts with dress-lust.

If Dorothy Gale got married, then surely she'd want a tornado cake like #3! I love the little bits on wires, really adds to the effect.

That blue one has an Art Deco effect, I'm kinda expecting a little bit of naughty nickers to be peeping out under each flirty skirt.

I LIKE your idea of world monuments (Eiffel Tower, Roman Colosseum, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Sydney Opera House, etc.)!
But I think that wrecks of these would be more fun.
I carved the Sphinx out of a bar of Ivory soap in the third grade ("Art" class, don't cha know)...it just might have been the world's first SOAP WRECK.

Oh wow to that third cake. I wish I had a dress that looked as great as that cake lol. All of these cakes look so beautiful that whoever cuts into them should be arrested!

The piping on that first cake is amazing, which makes it all the more annoying to the anal-retentive in me that it's all slightly off-kilter.

OMG. These are just FABULOUS. Ever since I was a little kid I've wanted to be a designer, and I've always liked cooking. I now know the perfect career for me!!!

How I wish I could have the best cake as what I have seen in the internet during my wedding. That's so exciting.

I often don't get the popular culture references in the posts but I just have to say that I did recognize today's "Squee!"

My Percy Jackson (thus all things Greek God-like) obsessed son would like me to point out that Athena is the godess of wisdom and Aphrodite is the godess of beauty and wealth. :) All of the cakes are fantastic!!

May 3, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAngela

All amazing, except the draping cloth cake. I actually think it looks more like a wreck :(

May 4, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAlyssa

The Aretha Franklin hat cake was made by Sylvia Weinstock Cakes. (The small white chocolate glasses logo is on hidden among the flowers on the cake board.)

May 4, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKatya

I loved Aretha's hat! Mrs. Obama's dress, not so much...

'Fabric draped' cakes aren't my thing but I have to say that one isn't bad. Looks like they got their monogram from Toppers With Glitz =) I wanted to get mine from there but there was no budge in my budget. *sigh*

How did they do the ruffles on the blue one?? 0_0 Reminds me of Cinderella.

The 'dress' cake with the little flowers is awesome! And you're right, it looks like it's on a dress form--much less creepy!

The wrought iron cake is jaw-dropping. Wow.

May 4, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterladyrazorsharp

Am I the only one who wants to know who made the dress? I love it! And the cake is fabulous, of course. :)

May 5, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterfluffyicculus

OMG the first one is a lolita cake! those girls scare the crap out of me whenever I see them promenading in Central Park!!! the cake is gorgeous, but Lolitas are like walking wrecks in their ridiculous clothes and their ringleted hair.

Oh wow, I saw the first picture and thought, "That looks like a Moi-Meme-Moitie dress, why would THAT be on CakeWre-" and then I saw the cake. SO amazing! That someone would make a Moitie cake, and that someone would take the time to do all that to it is just... wow.

Is that last cake for Jeremy Fitzgerald' s wedding? It's a really cool cake, but I wonder if that is a fnaf reference. I doubt it.

October 2, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterChubbyBudder

Pppfffft. Silly me!! Fnaf didn't even COME OUT when this was posted. *Facepalm*. :-P
