What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

They'll NEVER Notice

Unless someone takes a picture and posts it on the internet, of course - and what are the odds of that?

Heheheh.

Heh.

Heh.

Hoo! Yeah. Good stuff.

Hey, maybe if we get a mirror!
Oh. Wait...

Don't worry, "Jett" - those poo-bats are so disturbing, no one will care whose cake this used to be.

Hey, bakers, ever get the feeling you forgot something?

No? No. [nodding] Well, I guess that explains it, then.

How to make Al feel special:

AFTERTHOUGHTS:
Technically they're still thoughts, and that's what counts.

And finally, how to totally freak out your boyfriend:

(No, this wasn't intentional. And yes, that's the store "fix.")

I can tell you that Isaiah was probably never happier to see a Cake Wreck in his entire life, though.

Aindrea B., Michelle V., LG, Sharon H., & Ashley, you've gotta admit: that would be a great way to break the news. Much better than, say, putting the used pregnancy test stick on the cake.

What's that? I haven't posted that cake yet? Oh ho ho! Well, my dear Wreckporters, then you'll just have stay tuned.

With the positioning of the "fix," it looks like it says, "Happy Birthers Day!" That's something else entirely.

I won't say I've never fantasized about eating a bacon cake, but I never thought it would have swirls of sugary icing and confectionary roses all over it.
Thanks to the Chester County Concert Band, I now know better.

I just love bakers who think writing over a mistake will make it ok and that people will actually pay for the cake. The sad thing is when people actually do pay for the cake when a wreck like that is given to them. I can't imagine anyone who would get something like that last cake home and not return to the store, demand a full refund and that the bakery re-do the cake for free.

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMike Owens

Ok...there seriously needs to be a law against using brown icing anywhere on a cake.

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJill of Ark

The poo bats are awesome.

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterThe Boob Nazi

I'm both horrified & intregued at the idea of a used pee stick cake.

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterChristina

Wait. I'm confused. How old is the Wreckerator who piped a backwards six?

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterPunk

The "fixed" wreck makes me question any cake baker's credibility, and that's just sad.

Aside from the backwards 6, I love the fermata on the first cake. 16 forever? Keep dreaming :)

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMaggles

I was thinking that the "16" cake was maybe "61" and somehow ended up the mirror image, but no. Everything else is right, including the music notes on the side of the cake.

Any why the fermata on the top? What does that have to do with 16... 16 and holding?

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCyndi

Um, I'm kinda new here, so please forgive my ignorance. What exactly is wrong with the "concert band" cake?

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered Commenteravi5732

The backwards 6 might be a half note, given the other music deco in the cake -- maybe the person/event/whatever is 1 and a half years old.

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

On the first cake it almost looks like it was done intentionally to look like a music note. Maybe. It would then match the notes around the rest of the cake. I could just be overly optimistic here though.

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterBrittany B

avi5732,

Well hello there! Good to see new readers. The problem with the band cake is that they forgot to ice the sides. But they still piped the border which I still can't figure out.

There it is.

Wreck On!

I feel bad for the poor people who have to eat the 'poo icing' on some of these cakes.

RE: the backwards "6" cake...

The Wreckerator is my best friend; the cake was for her musically-inclined daughter's 16th birthday party. We kept checking the cake trying to figure out what wasn't quite right about it. The 6 being backwards didn't click until the guests arrived! By that time, there was nothing left to do but laugh our butts off!

Glad y'all like the cake; she worked hard on it! Oh, and it was delicious!

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAmi

I'm with Anonymous, I think the top cake was possibly intentional, with a half note included in the "16".

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAshley

The band cake forgot to ice the sides and celebrating is missing the g or something at the end!

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered Commentermom2jjk

The backward six may be all about too many stars on sticks--it's just not possible to keep track of everything at once.

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterHelen Husher

I agree that the "6" in the first cake is a half note - though they're not typically angled, it would have probably looked even stranger if the half-note was standing straight. If I had enough music-geek friends, I'd do this for my next "_6" birthday, but knowing my non-music geek friends... it wound wind up being one of those inside jokes that gets less and less funny as you explain it. Oh well ¬_¬...

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterfaunablues

There's really a pee-stick cake? Oh, I can't wait to see that! I've peed on more that my share of sticks in my attempt to get pregnant. Even after finally getting a positive test after 5 rounds of in-vitro, I never thought to put it on a cake. Damn! Wish that wreck was my idea! Haha!

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterDawn's Recipes

Who doesn't love a little dyslexic cake?

*Waiting for the pee stick cake*

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterFluffy Cow

avi: It took me awhile to get it so don't feel bad. I thought maybe at first they had forgotten the Concert and that didn't seem so egregious. Unlike the other wrecks, this one wasn't writing-related. What was forgotten was the icing on the side of the cake.

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterStraw

Happy Birchday Jett! Hope you are a tree.

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterwreck lover!!

The treble clef on the first cake is backwards, too. For the uninitiated, it is actually difficult to write a proper treble clef, let alone pipe one onto a cake! It's perfect except, well, it's backwards. So I give her props for that. I wish I was 16 and holding!

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered Commentermimi

avi5732, thanks for asking the question about the band cake! I came to the comments to see if anyone could tell me what was wrong with the cake. Even with enlarging the photo, the sides look like they have some kind of ugly glaze on them . . . would have never guessed they are "naked!"

Those poo bats . . . I would have never guessed what they were either!

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterWriteCards

Anybody notice that the treble clef on that first cake is also backwards??

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

@ Gary-- Bacon goes with everything. I can't think of a better all-occasion food.

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I laughed and laughed at the forewarning of a pee-stick cake-- I haven't laughed that hard since...well, since I saw the Austrian leg cake, so it hasn't been all that long really, I guess.

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Thank you, John, for explaining the band cake's oversight; it's painfully obvious now, but I'll admit I was staring at it for a good five minutes trying to figure out what they'd forgotten. Oops.

Also, it's a real shame that the baker of the first cake made such a wreck of the 6 (or 9?), because IMHO the rest of that cake is adorable.

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Apparently I'm not the only one who noticed the backwards treble clef--which actually annoys me more than the six!

*shudders at the thought of pee-stick cake*

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterBecky

very old and well known quote...
"If you want some/anything done right, you gotta do it yourself." Even if I can't turn out cakes as well shaped or decorated, you can be sure that the numbers will be the right way around, the font will stay the same and I won't be making any spelling/gramma/general text errors.

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered Commentershikishinobi

What scares me more than creepy poo-bats and un-iced cakes is the fact that someone thought those cakes were AOK to display...and eat!

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterEmily Hill

Hey all,

As much as I love the fact that you are all benefit-of-the-doubt givers, I just confirmed that the backwards six was unintentional. She was a little rushed, a bit flustered and put it on wrong.

Bwoops.

Pity about the 16 cake - it looks good otherwise. But the Father's Day cake is messed up. What were they thinking?

Hi All

This is the Maker of the Sweet Sixteen cake. I made all the notes and numbers of fondant (home made marshmallow). And the music notes i found patterns on-line...lol...maybe i should have grabbed number patterns too.

Glad yall like the cake.

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAindrea

people will do anything. a pee-stick cake wouldn't surprise me in the least.

i actually like the 16 cake! love the musical notes and symbols! how funny that they couldn't quite put their finger on what was wrong with the cake! heh heh

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTerry Lee

Ami and Aindrea, thanks for writing in about the Sweet 16 cake. I'm glad you both got a good laugh about it and were willing to share it with us!

I didn't focus on the missing icing on the side of the concert band cake either--I just figured it was some new style of cake.

But the Fathers/Birthday cake--that's just messed up.

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I actually love the "16" cake. It shows a lot of creativity and good use of color. I couldn't ice a cupcake at that age. Way to go, Andrea!

Thanks, that explains why the dogs have visited. Also, that's one baseball I think we can afford to replace before we play again. Just to be on the safe side, in case no one brought soap and hand sanitizer to the game.

Another good reason why printed transparencies should never be on a cake!

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I had to look at the orchestra cake twice to figure out what was wrong. LOL ooops! XD Too bad--it's actually very well done!

So, as cute as the "16" cake is, it sounds like it's not a professional job. What a shame... it's better than the other *ahem* "professional" jobs here!

Sorry, Isaiah, but this cake is for your mom instead.

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

What I want to know is how many of these cakes did people agree to pay for? How many of the bakeries were confronted? Did they offer discounts? I know a lot of these are photographed in display cases, but for those that send in cakes from their own personal experiences, what were the outcomes?
THANKS!

Wait! Was that a cliffhanger?

I think it was...

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterE.M. Green

What is "birchelry" - and why should Jett be happy about it? It appears to have something to do with poo on a lawn, which doesn't seem like something to celebrate.

February 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterDeborah in California

Boy, am I glad you pointed out that those were bats on the one cake. Because my horrified reaction was...what on earth were those poops SUPPOSED to even be? Ayiiiiiieeeeee.
