What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

You Say "Redneck" Like it's a Bad Thing

I would like to state for the record that I grew up around a bunch of rednecks, and I have nothing but affection for that Nascar-loving, deer-hunting, Coors-ball-cap-wearing crowd. That said, I'm pretty sure they should never be allowed to plan their own weddings.

Exhibit A:

I have no words.

Exhibit B:

I have words, but none that can be repeated in polite company. Egads, man, the hoof! I don't even want to know what that is inside it - just tell me it's not the cake server, please. [shudder]

Exhibit C:

"We are gathered here today to join this man, this woman, and this truck in holy matrimony..."

Exhibit D:

For a "shotgun wedding" perhaps? (Ba-dum-bump!)

And finally, Exhibit E:

Hey, look, an actual bride and groom topper - no deer heads! Oh, but there IS a deer...and the bride's toting a shotgun...and I'm suddenly in the mood for fruit roll-ups. Huh.

I'm actually a bit disappointed that I couldn't find a Nascar-themed wedding cake. Anyone have one to send me? C'mon: it'll be therapeutic!

Thanks to Chris M., Melody H., Jacy D., and both Anony M.s for their expert Wreckporting!

Are the first set of initials on that stumptastic cake really DWI? Because if so, thats fantastic! Think of all the jokes!
Maybe it stands for Decorating while intoxicated, instead of the usual driving while intoxicated? Deer without icing? Oh, I'm out, but maybe others more clever then myself can think of more funny things.
God, I'm going directly to hell for mocking someones wedding cake, arnt I? Oh well, I'm in good company.

I think all these cakes are actually pretty beautiful. Except the second one, the camo-and-blood cake...not quite sure what they were going for there.

uhhh Marian, blue balls on a wedding cake? My inner teenage boy is laughing hysterically

Is it just me or does it look like the bride shot the groom and is dragging him to his grave on that one cake.

Cheating already?

January 29, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLara

what does it say about me that I think exhibits A and C are awesome, and that I actually wish I either hunted or off-roaded, so that I could have one for my wedding? What have you got for hobby mycologists?

January 29, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnna

Clever and beautiful, particularly the first one. Playful and perfect for that bachelor party event. As a wedding cake for the reception after the wedding... ummm... no!

January 29, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterdaMamma

Exhibit C is classic - my husband would have loved this cake for our wedding.

January 29, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMum-me

oh man, just google "nascar cake". There's a whole lot of "great" stuff there. How do I know this? A friend was looking for an idea for her brother's birthday cake. yeah.

January 29, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterunMuse

Oh yeah, nothing says true love like a clear-cut tree stump and a shotgun. The monster truck? Does anyone in that bride's family know the word - INTERVENTION - ?! Daaang...

January 29, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJune2

Ya know, the first cake has some nice things....the leaves are amazing!....that's about it. Haha....I have to wonder about the one with the mudslide... Did the hubby-to-be just want to be involved in the cake design part of it??

January 29, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterhisgal2

I really like the first cake, although I'd make sure it was a doe, not just a spike buck on it. I wasn't married in camo, but I did sew a camo dress for my junior prom. Then again, I'm the deer hunter in the family - the hubby thinks it's too much trouble.

The truck cake gave me an idea for hubby's birthday too. Anyone know where I can find a Dodge Ramcharger model? He has 2 of the old things.

January 29, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRaine

I did a NASCAR cake for my husband's groom's cake (well, I just took a regular cake and put his favorite #3 car on top ... this was before Dale died. Had a little bride and groom next to it ... turned out kind of cute, and he was nicely surprised).

Our actual wedding cake had purple flowers and pretty bells on top, though, very non-wrecky.

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLindaBudz

wow, some of these cakes are very creative, but at a wedding?? I love the first one the most -
4 tiers of deer, you can't miss it - I got even my hubby to watch these wedding cakes,
thanks for sharing, jeannette

So, the first deer cake looks like it'd be perfect for my college roommate, who wanted to put a deer head on the wall of our room (hint: I'm an animal rights person, haha). When I vetoed that, she covered her bed in bunny skins just to taunt me. We have a theory that the student services office had their pet monkey match our roommate applications together, because we couldn't be more opposite, lol. But yeah, she'd love that cake. I think I'll email it to her...muhahaha...

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCattie

hahahahahahaha!!!!!!

I can so *totally* see these being served at a few weddings around these parts. Redneck heaven here-deer season is an official school holiday.

2 winters ago someone had strung up one of those white light deer decorations from a tree in their front yard, and added some red lights in it's gut. I had to back the car up and drive by again to make sure I was really seeing that.

So yeah, deer and shotguns on a cake would work real well here.

"THE HOOF!" killed me enough to delurk.

even moreso than the technically well-done, but bizarre cakes.. THE HOOF.

WHYYYYYY?????

wv: natin "what is our natin comin' to when we lets the rednecks plan their own weddin's?"

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJo Asakura

I know there are some comments higher up in the stream about the first cake clearly featuring two male deer...one a mature buck, and the other but a youngster... Is this maybe a NAMBLA cake? A redneck NAMBLA cake?

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTig

I agree with Emily J - I think the first one is lovely!

The sad thing is...the first cake, with the deer? I've seen it before, and one of the girls I work with thought it was awesome and wants something like that for her own wedding. Of course, she's already said she wants a camo theme. Yep...I'm going to be sure to get a picture of the (sure to be Wrecktastic) cake.

(yeah...I work in the agriculture office of my school...it's redneck central)

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterFoxTrottinKate

exhibit E: just wondering why the deer & shotgun-toting bride are still standing; while groom reclines in what looks like a near-death position, leaning against his beloved? did she 'mistakenly' shoot the wrong subject? hmmm...? couldn't be THAT! forgot, this is a redneck cake...don't think, enjoy!

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLonnie

You know, the first one, without the decapitated animal heads, isn't too bad. At least it's well made. And I kind of think the "shotgun wedding" one is a little cute...*shug* maybe I'm just oblivious to what rednecks really look like from people on the outside-I wouldn't say I am one, but I've lived in the south my whole life. Meh.

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAmber

Hey being a "redneck" is not aa bad thing.I think that if a preppy girl can plan her wedding and her cute little cake with all the ribbons and flowers and bows than a country girl can plan hers with her cake and with camo deer and guns. Its about who you are and what you like not about what other people think...I know how it feels to be made fun of just cause you are country...so back off and let the paople pick there own wedding cakes.:)

January 31, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Well these look like they were made for people having fun. Anything has to better than these weddings which cost fortunes and make everybody uncomfortable and miserable.

January 31, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterStefan

That frosted loaf of bread looked as though someone had just squeezed a chihuahua after several helpings of chili.

February 1, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterprimate9683

Fantastic.

Actually, I was at a bridal fair with a friend yesterday, and I saw a cake almost exactly like the truck one, except with snowmobiles.

I live in northern Canada, redneck haven, eh.

February 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterIsa

HOLY REDNECK, SHOTGUN WEDDING, BATMAN!!!

I grew up in the country and I received a request from a friend I went to highschool just last week for a grooms cake that looked like camo-bark with a dear on it... and I got a picture of Exibit A as a "WE REALLY LIKE THIS ONE" example!!!

MWAHAHAHAHAHA

February 3, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

This is just a new tradition of the "man cake" at weddings. There is a normal cake which is often seen as "girly" as then, the new "man cake" where the man can have something manly, like hunting on it.

Some of these are very beautiful cakes, even if they are entirely inedible.

February 3, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Just as a matter of opinion, I see a wedding as a very personal thing, and if you want a "redneck" cake as your wedding cake, then it's your wedding. Not every wedding cake has to be white with flowers, after all.

I also have to say that I think that most of those cakes were done very well. They look almost as well done as some things I've seen on "Ace of Cakes" on Food Network.

February 3, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

To the anonymous right above me, they aren't "man cakes", they're "groom's cakes", and they aren't a new tradition in southern states.

Personally, I think that your wedding cake should reflect your personality, and as such refuse to qualify these as wrecks, as wedding cakes or not.

February 3, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJen

Maybe I'm just sick to death of seeing wedding cakes that look *exactly* like every other wedding cake out there, but I didn't find most of these to be wrecktastic at all (of course, I've got four months to go in an 22-month engagement, and I'm on wedding planning overload, so I may be biased). In fact, I thought most of them were quite well-done. I really like the first one and the one with the truck.

Kudos to those happy couples who decided that they didn't want monograms, polka dots, or whatever else the wedding websites are proclaiming as eminently chic and went with something that reflected their personalities and interests instead! :)

February 4, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

At least they look to be well made. They are great though.

February 4, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJennie

Probably nobody will see this, there being near 300 comments, but has anyone noticed that on the tree trunk cake, one of the names (initials) is *DWI*??? Is that hilarious or what?

February 4, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

A side note: in Italy the word "cornuto" ("horned", as in horned animal) also means "cuckold". :-D

February 5, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

the first cake actually isn't THAT bad... just that cake and animals are like water and oil.

February 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterIn the Hay

Exhibit D would've made a cute cake for an Anniversary party if it weren't for shotgun shells

February 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

how creative you are! your comments made my day, what a spirit! well done!

I am still searching for the elusive NASCAR wedding cake, but this topper ( http://www.magicalday.com/NASCAR-wedding-cake-topper.html ) gives me hope (?) that one is out there somewhere.

February 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Exhibit A was brilliant. We don't have cakes like that in Australia. There was great skill involved but the taste was questionable. The juxtaposition of the 2 = enjoyment for all!!

February 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

This is great these are some of the cake ideas we have for our wedding we are going to show the pictures to our cake decorator and see what she can do thank you for posting these pics

February 13, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Looks like several commenters were confused about the first cake having two bucks on the top.
Yes, there are same-sex redneck couples out there. Visit Garner, NC and you'll see tons.

February 13, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRaleighRob

My mother pointed out that the deer on the left, with the small horns, is also a male. Female deer do not have horns. Brokeback Mountain in Alabama? :)

February 14, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPolitics of a Patriot

Did anyone catch that the first cake had two male deer on it? Maybe an old buck and his twink?

February 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Most of those cakes were beautifully executed- proof that even a skilled baker cannot render a tacky theme tasteful.

I think the cakes were very well done - and I don't understand why this kind of non-traditional wedding cake elicits so much horror, while everyone falls all over themselves to praise wedding cakes with super mario, vampire, james bond, star wars, nightmare before christmas & other very non-traditional themes.

For every geek-themed cake that someone loves, someone else probably thinks its tacky. Why so much hate for the hunting / truck cakes? Are they really more tacky than Star Wars?

March 11, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Am I the only person who thinks it looks like the bride is dragging the groom along the ground? Maybe they shouldn't have given her that gun...

April 9, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterIndigo

They are all well done and pretty, but definitely inappropriate for a wedding.

Though the stump cake was a pretty cool and cute idea, assuming it didn't have the shells surrounding it it would make a pretty adorable hippie wedding cake.

April 14, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJess

I think Exhibit A looks pretty!

June 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Loved cake A... until the deer of course.

Nascar wedding cakes abound curtesy of google. I found a couple of 'good' versions here...

Good to see such great work, brings a smile everytime I check in.

The first cake's toppers with the deer are actually two male deer. No does have antlers. So, it's an adult male deer marrying a young male deer. Pedo-deer, anyone?
