What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: 12 Happy Spring Cakes

Are you Northerners thawing out up there? 'Cuz if so, I think we should celebrate with some Spring time Sweets! Woot woot!

(By Galia Hristova GuGi)

Would you LOOK at that gorgeous basket of flowers? Makes me wanna skip through fields of tall grass, or go strawberry-picking, or maybe even leave the house sometime this week. It's that good.

And hey, if it's still freezing where you are, then just consider these beauties a sign of warmer things to come.

(By A Wish and a Whisk)

These fantastical flowers are like heaven for my eyeballs. I would like one on a headband, STAT.

Of course, it's not all flutterbys and flowers; there are also those famous April showers.

(By Christian Sutjahyo)

And with an umbrella this fabulous, I think we'd all welcome a few extra sprinkles.
(See what I did there?)

The baker calls this one, "The Little Fairy of Rain:"

(By Silvia Mancini Cake Art)

D'awww. And look at the water ripples on the cake board! And that umbrella tier is so cleverly done, you'd think you could put your hand under it! Gorgeous.

Here's one for you fondant-free fans:

(By Queen of Hearts Couture Cakes)

That's all piped buttercream, and I can't get over the incredible texture on the butterfly and flowers!
Kind of like a latch-hook kit, right?

(Am I the only one who remembers those?)

Loving the textured tree tier on this one:

(By Cakes Alouisa)

And that leafy swag border!

For those of you "feathering the nest" this Spring:

(By Cake Fixation)

Wouldn't this be a sweet shower cake? Those hanging picture frames are the cutest!

Speaking of which, it doesn't get much cuter than a dancing hippo with a turtle admirer:

(By Custom Cake Designs)

Or is she ice-skating? Yeah, I think she's ice-skating. In a tiara. The way you're supposed to.

I'm told people like to picnic during Springtime. Now, I've never been on one, and this cake - adorable as it is - isn't doing much to convince me:

(By Heather's Cakes and Confections)

Though I'll admit the ants are almost kind of endearing here. ALMOST. ;)

Now lady bugs, on the other hand, are always welcome:

(By Pink Cake Box)

Especially on big bouquets of tulips.

Ok, one final fling of Springtime frippery:

(By Sweet Bakes)

Ahhhh.

Ok, now back to your regularly scheduled forecast.

Happy Sunday, everyone!

Aw, thanks, Jen. I can't tell you how much I needed to ooh! and ahh! today. They're so wonderful I can't pick a favorite. :)

FYI, here in Southern Ontario, Canada, the sun is shining, the snow is gone, the boids are singing, the crocuses are blooming, and it's double digits above zero Celsius. (for you in the US, 0ºC is freezing, 20ºC is room temp.)
P.S. is cake #5 an "upside-down" cake ?

They are all amazing as per usual, however, the 2 that really caught my eye and made my heart go pitter-patter were the two umbrella cakes. What lovely and unique designs! I want them both! (but not to eat. just to admire.)

D'aww the turtle/hippo, fairy cake, and picnic cake :D As for the fondant free one that is amazing :O and yes I do remember those kits :)))

I remember latch hook kits. Did them with my Mom growing up.
Beautiful cakes! Makes me want spring RIGHT NOW. It snowed last night.

I remember latch-hook kits...you can't be THAT old, Jen!
Thanks for the beautiful Sunday Sweets - I look forward to them every week!

"...latch hook kit..." Or possibly beading. Lovely, anyway.

The leaves on those tulips with the striations. Just wonderful.

It was the carved initials that did it, for me. So sweet, so promising...
so ephemeral...

Awwww!
And thanks for thinking of us fondant-free fans!

The last one, the butterflies must have been printed out/painted on some type of edible paper, no?

April 12, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterErica

I think that all buttercreme butterfly cake looks more like bead embroidery. Latch hook rugs have more depth. :)

I can't stop looking at them! Love the basket of flowers and picnic cakes, but that hippo/turtle cake melted my heart. It reminds me of Madagascar 2. Of course it was the giraffe who loved the hippo, but he mooned over her in just that way. And to top it off, daffodils, my favorite flowers. Contented sigh.

The snow has MOSTLY melted in Boston, but it's gorgeous out today and it actually feels like spring for the first time. Too bad I don't have one of those cakes here to celebrate it with!

I will gladly accept those sprinkles in the shape of tiny flowers!

Latch hook- I have one of Winnie the Pooh upstairs in my craft room that I have never finished. Maybe it's time to dig that out... 😊

The third cake reminds me quite a bit of Hanami, the Japanese cherry-blossom festival. Geishas have been attending it for hundreds of years, & the modern ones often look a bit like that, with the high heels, shortened skirt & all. Can't quite reconcile the dog, though, as pets are generally not that large.

Sorry, geishas & Japanese history are a particular fascination of mine.

These are amazing cakes, they certainly do make it feel like spring and yes, we are thawing out in Vermont.. Now I want cake, or a lady bug or two.

As a decoration, ladybugs are much cuter than ants. However, I would want neither of the real ones in my house. Have you ever had a ladybug invasion? There are years when they are all over. I remember once they were all over inside one of the buildings at my college. And there have been times when they were so thick around the house that if you opened the door, some were sure to get in. I think I would prefer a quiet ant to a flying ladybug buzzing around and clanking about under my lampshade. Also, ladybugs bite. I don't know if it is just certain kinds, but I've been bitten. They just land on you and bite for no reason. So an insect is an insect, whether it is an ant, a fly or a ladybug. (I'll give an exception for butterflies, though.)

You've never been on a picnic? Seriously? That's......sad. You must promise yourself to go on a picnic this summer. If you can go to an outdoor concert place that plays live music while you're picnicking, all the better.

I HATED doing latch hook! I had to make a pillow for home ec in jr high. It was literally the end of the world for me. And my mom. She had to listen to my non stop whining. Haha

Thanks for these GORGEOUS pics. The first and last cakes just take me to a land of wonder.

Believe it or not, my favorite thing on the hippo cake is the daisy in front that is in the process of losing its petals, bit-by-bit. Now that's attention to detail and charming to boot!
