What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Favorite Movie Villains!

Sometimes it's good to be bad, and these fabulous villains are here to prove it.

(By Le Torte di Renato)

Such impressive modeling skills - check out the poor unfortunate souls on the lower right!

Tempting as it was to do all Disney villains, I had to branch out - if only so I could include this guy:

(By Kristie Kent, but I can't find a website for her. Anyone know?)

Loki!

And let me tell you, this is one of the most ingenious decorating techniques I've ever seen, combining a 2D edible image with 3D modeled sugar paste. It's brilliant, I tell you. BRILLIANT.

All these years later, and this guy STILL freaks me out:

(By Luiza of Country House Cakes)

But everyone loves a good Sumerian Deity Destructor form!

(Submitted by Natalie C., made by Iced Over)

AKA Staypuft.
(Yes, yes, I know: my geek is showing. ;))

I used to think Vader was the ultimate bad guy, but these days a certain bounty hunter is giving him a Kessel run for his money:

(Sub'd by Michelle M., made by Fancy Cakes By Lauren)

"We love you, Boba Fett!"
"I know. But you're no good to me dead."

It's not often the bad guy smells like strawberries:

(By Cakes with Character)

And the purple minions were pretty much bad guys, right?

(By Tina of 13 Baking)

Or at least grumpy.

Yep, definitely grumpy.

Care to roll the dice on an Oogie Boogie cake?

(By The Bean Counter Bakery)

Of course, when it comes to comics, only one bad girl reigns supreme:

(By NerdAche Cakes)

Harley Quinn, puddin!

I thought about looking for Poison Ivy, too, but then I decided this Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors was even better:

(By CW reader Katy Salzo, made for her niece)

FEED US, SEYMOUR.

And finally, fresh from her new movie, there's the Jolie-ified Maleficent herself:

(By Cécile Beaud)

Being bad has never been so beautiful.

Happy Sunday, everyone!

Technically, Loki is a Disney villain because Disney owns the MCU.

Who is oogie boogie? Cake is well done, just never heard of that character. LOVED little shop of horrors :D

Technical question: How does one get the effect of Loki's cape? I don't even know what to call it: the lustre is too bold for "satin," too gentle for "metallic," and I don't think "pearlescent" really nails it, either. What does one use for that effect, and how does one use it? And is it available from Amazon?

That Maleficent cake is *AMAZING*!!! Thanks for sharing!

June 29, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterbeemyladybug

Oogie Boogie is the baddie from The Nightmare Before Christmas. 'S a good movie, you should give it a watch sometime :D

The first two cakes were jaw-dropping, awe inspiring! WOW!!! The rest are terrific, too. LOVE Sundays on CakeWrecks.

While I admire the artistry of these cakes (and every cake on Sunday Sweets), I'm always left with the same question: "Does anyone actually eat these?" To me, the first purpose of a cake is to be delicious. But I wouldn't be able to actually cut into and destroy these works of art. So I'm left with conflicted feelings--I love looking at them and appreciate the talent it takes to make them, but then I feel like it's an expensive waste of food. So, can anyone tell me if they've eaten one of these works of art, and is it really delicious?

The Maleficent cake is skillful, but creepy. I'd feel funny about digging into it.

June 29, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterClassic Steve

That Jolie cake is a little too creepy-accurate for me. That Boba Fett cake is awesome though!

I can't even imagine doing ONE of the characters on the Disney cake, let alone all of them! Incredible.
Staypuft is one of my very favorite characters. Just too cute to really be evil. I kind of almost think I could pull that one off. Maybe I'll try it for my own birthday cake this year. After all, at 53 I should be able to have some fun with it, right?

Bob, it might be something like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rainbow-Dust-Metallic-Paint-Holly/dp/B009GDHLX6/ref=pd_sim_kh_11?ie=UTF8&refRID=0HZTM6YB1TDS28GH3A0P

@ mindy1- YOU MUST see The Nightmare Before Christmas. It's a GREAT movie. It's a Tim Burton masterpiece. -one of many, Burton is great, and his crazy wife too!

June 29, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterVBeach Alemap

@Mary, I've had cake from "Ace of Cakes" - while the cake was gorgeous - it really wasn't all that great to eat in my opinion. I've heard others that have raved over the cake tastes on some like this as well. I think it's a matter of taste at that point - or expectations.

@Mindy1- definitely MUST see Nightmare Before Christmas! It's one of my favorites!!

I LOVE Audrey II. LSOH is one of my favourite films (the first couple of budgies we got are named Audrey and Seymour)... that cake is amazing!

June 29, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterClare

I would be a bit scared of a kid who actually wanted a Lotso cake unless he or she had a really short attention span and didn't watch the movie all the way through.

June 29, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterpikkewyntjie

As gorgeous as these all are, that Loki cake is just kickass. Them techniques be sexy as all get-out!

}:)

I was about to say something when all of a sudden I realized this was MOVIE villians, not villians in general.

I feel stupid now.
So very very stupid.

Also these cakes are awesome.

June 29, 2014 | Unregistered Commenter-Unknown-

I want that Loki cake. It's just stunning.

And the Harley Quinn cookies! Did you know that Kevin Smith named his daughter after Harley Quinn? True!

And yeah, the Maleficent cake is a little too realistic. Be a great centerpiece for an adult (geek) party, though.

June 29, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterRoxy Random

Amazing cakes, and as someone as already asked, how do you ever cut into these (especially the ones with faces) and eat them?

June 29, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterdkzody

These are just stunning beyond words. The creators of these cakes are true artists in every sense of the word.

(Although I still think the prices of these cakes - at least a general idea - should be disclosed along with the photos. It would infinitely help those bakers who are expected to create cakes of this calibre for less than $100.)

June 29, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterWaffles!

Another awesome post! And talking about cutting into the masterpieces always reminds me of the Dead Lenin cake - the one that had me belly-laughing ALL FREAKING DAY when I first saw it! http://www.cakewrecks.com/home/2009/7/21/im-guessing-they-didnt-have-a-matching-card.html

June 29, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKaren

To add in with Ali- the Mouse owns Lucas Films as well, making the Boba Fett cake a Disney villain too. Luckily it seems that Leia won't be added to the official Disney Princess lineup. :D

June 29, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDotti

Bob, it looks like luster dust to me. I would get that effect by using a bright green fondant base and going over it with emerald green luster dust. Possibly with a touch of pearl dust mixed in, but probably straight luster dust. Amazon does carry them (http://www.amazon.com/CK-Products-Green-Luster-Dust/dp/B0000VLH6K/ref=sr_1_31?ie=UTF8&qid=1404087740&sr=8-31&keywords=luster+dust for the green), but I get them at my local cake-decorating store or at globalsugarart.com

I sooo need that Loki cake for my Marvel crazed 14 year old daughter. She's begging to go to Atlanta Dragon Con as Loki, her hair is already dyed black. I figure the hair is so much easier to change and she's actually cute as cane be with her Snow White skin. Lol

June 29, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJenninTenn

Okay, my two favorites are the Oogie Boogie and the "Twoey" cakes. The Jolie inspired one, while painted beautifully, still looks out of proportion to me. Maybe that was the point, I don't know. Her shoulders just don't seem to be large enough. I also feel it would have looked better without the hand, just the bust.

June 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

Let's be honest... We've all wanted to eat Tom Hiddleston at one time or another.

June 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterChelle

I love these cakes! That Loki one is just amazing!!

I'd also like to second the idea from Waffles to include a price, or a price range, for cakes where possible. I'd be fascinated to see what such artistry costs.

June 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJessB

For the Loki cake, Creative Cakes by Kristy might be the decorator for which you seek. All I found was a Facebook page, though:

(Hopefully the link works)

Hi, I made Loki. I airbrushed his cape. I started with bright green fondant, airbrushed it with a mix of green and silver airbrush colours. I then went over it with just a light layer of silver to finish it off. I hope this helps.

July 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKristy Kent

The eyes on the Maleficent cake are stunning.

The Loki cake was awesome.
