What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

These Cakes Need A DOCTOR

Listen, I don't want to freak you out or anything, but I know everything you're about to say.

It's complicated. And kind of wibbly-wobbly.

Hey, you leave my mother out of this!

Now, look, we haven't got much time; the average internet-using adult's attention span lasts only... DUCK!!

  DON'T BLINK.

Then he'd win the staring contest.

Like I was saying, we don't have much... AAAAH WEEPING ANGEL!

Oh. Sorry, Sheila! Thought you were someone else. That's some really fetching pipe strapping and glitter tulle you've got there, though.

Anyway, guys, I'm sorry. I'm very, very sorry. But it's up to you now.

So... what do you think of this cake?

I mean, it's clearly descending into a temporal rift. Or possibly the Swamps of Sadness. And I'm sure there's some kind of hidden meaning to "police = box." But more importantly: is it bigger on the inside, and if so, can I have a piece the size of a buffalo?

Or how about this one?

I've always thought the TARDIS could be a bit softer/squishier, so this groom's cake/ throw-rug is JUST the thing.

Brace yourself, for I sense there are dark times ahead for this next one.

Or maybe just for your bowels.

HeheheheheEW.

(You'd almost think the color of the photo was off, until you notice the top "light." Da heck?)

Anyway, like I said, it's up to YOU to rescue these cakes from a bunch of garden statuary playing Red Light Green Light. It's super easy, though. You just need some fish sticks, an extra bow tie, a Cthulhu mask with a Pokémon ball, a really, really long scarf, and ...

TOO LATE!

By The Bunny Baker

Thanks to Krista C., Rauha, Marielen, Valorie M., and Mairi R. for the time out. (And yes, that angel cake IS pretty dang awesome. And terrifying. But awesome. But terrifying.)

Wibbly wobbly indeed... The best part about all this is, I came on here just after watching a Doctor Who documentary - how's that for timing?
(Also, Jen, if you're still looking for a list of the best recent episodes, I can hook you up!)

When I was a cake decorator at a certain grocery "supercenter" that many of the cakes on CakeWrecks obviously come from, I made a Tardis cake for my friend. It's not amazing, but for a cake that cost less than 10 dollars, it's not bad.

And what? No Dalek wrecks?

Wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey, sciency-wiency. Nice TARDIS cake zoomom!

May 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLindarella

The first TARDIS cake looks like a dalek wearing camouflage.

And I must be weird, but I've never found the angels creepy. Cool, but not creepy. And that last cake is wonderfully done.

@zoomom: Your cake is fantastic!

Okay. So I'm sitting at my desk at work, decide to take a quick glance to check out today's cakes and end up doing that thing where you're trying so hard not to laugh out loud that you start shaking and tears run down your cheeks. You know what I mean? So if I get fired because of today's post... Oh, who am I kidding? It would totally be worth it! Have to stop typing now. Hard to see screen through tears...

@A.Nonny Mous:...Do you know that little questioning ""trill" sound that a cat makes in its throat when it's puzzled? Well, I just did that. I read your comment somehow "hearing" an English/Irish/Scottish (?) accent; I have no idea why! What are "trainers"? What is a "Jammie Dodger"?? Or the "Skasis paradigm " ? I am intrigued by your...your...je ne sais quoi.. Also, WHICH choice Shakespearian words? (I have my own favorites.) What's being "ginger"? What the devil are "trainers"? I want to hear more. Turn the page, please?

@Stephanie - I helped my then 13yr-old make a NyanCat costume for Halloween last year. Basically, you need heather grey pants, long sleeved shirt, gloves, & maybe shoes (grey Keds?), plus grey cat ears (made with stiff grey felt & pink felt on a plastic hair band, and some rainbow fabric you sew to the top of the shirt just behind the shoulders. And felt in light pink, dark pink, & light brown/tan for the pop tart on the shirt. Can use costume makeup for nose or buy one for a few bucks @ the costume shop. She loved it & it was a hit with her friends!

PS to zoomom - oh, and the cakes need to be corn-free as well, K? Just pretend you're on that baking challenge show... ;-)

Upon seeing that last cake, one of my 10-y-old twins screamed and fled in terror, while the other (whose favorite holiday is Halloween and who I fully expect to be all gothy come her teen years) merely yawned. She then said it was "cute". All righty. Sit down, princess. Cue "Blink" .

Soon enough, she was squealing, "What happens if you blink?" Then, "It's MOVING!!!" and "Doctor, come back!"

Now she doesn't trust stone statues. Cute, indeed.

I really think I need to watch Doctor Who. Having not seen an episode I am at a loss for words at the cakes lol. Though that duck cake made me quickly scroll before it won the blinking contest..evil thing lol.

As much as I love Dr Who I wouldn't go near those Tardis cakes for fear of a young Adipose being born. Love the Angel, so well done.

Oh, my giddy aunt. It really does look like a throw rug!

@Bob: You ROCK! FOURTH DOCTOR RULES OK!

I'm likely the only living organism-human or otherwise-who knows NOTHing about this "Dr.Who" being. Or a lot of other things; yesterday I Googled "Tardis." So NOW, at last, I finally know that there's a little, blue phone booth out there in a land that I've only dreamed about...
I'm 63 years old (today, as a matter of fact) and spent my formative years-that's anything after high school- beneath a rock (actually, two rocks; big, heavy boulder/burdens that I now call "psycho ex-husbands").Now is my "ME" time~collecting Social Security, doing things that I WANT to do. Visiting this cakey wonderland of laughs (and gags, occasionally) is one of my favorites!! Carry on!

Not trying to be a nit-picky pain in the butt, but someone mentioned a 3D cake pan & I had to giggle, because I've never experienced a one-dimensional cake pan (or cake) Well, except on here, looking at the "wrecktos" (short for "wreck photos") Photos being 1-dimensional, y'know...Oh, never mind. Really. I need to go back to bed.(Sleep-derived, loopy, and stupid are no way to run a railroad. At least that's what I've heard.) (Hey, I like the sound of that, though..."Sleep-Deprived, Loopy, and Stupid, Attorneys At Law"...)

@HannaM. Do tell, please: what in bloody Hell are "fish fingers"??

May 30, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

You are the reason I watch Dr. Who. You are the reason I love Dr. Who. And subsequently, you are the reason I am absofreakinutely terrified of that last cake. Thanks.

mel, Sharyn, Irulan, Lindarella, TLC, Auntie Em, Caroline B (and anyone else I may have missed) - Thank you all so much for your kind comments about my TARDIS cake! It means a lot to have it appreciated by folks with such excellent taste!

KarateLady- I have an idea! You come on up to visit me in Canada and I will make you all the cake you can eat! Dairy-free, gluten-free, alternative-sugar, corn-free, etc., etc. No problem! I will make it out of butterfly kisses if you just come and visit me!
Also, yes, my mom is awesome! You don't have a mom as talented and amazing as my mom is without at least a little bit of it rubbing of on you!

Barbara Anne- I made the Joe versus the Volcano cake for my husband's and my 20th anniversary last year! It is a very special movie to us. (Why yes, we are a little strange!) It is rare for a week (okay, honestly, a day) to go by with out a Joe quote in our house! So glad you liked the cake! There is so much more to it than you can see in that picture, too. It was loads of fun!

@sendingtheclowns: Here in the States, we know them as "fish sticks." The Doctor's favorite dish (in one of his incarnations, at least) is fish fingers and custard, an unlikely combination to our earth-born palates.

I don't remember what television critic it was that once described Doctor Who as "a British children's program that's still not too sophisticated for American adults."

May 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBob

(If this should show up twice, disregard one of them;I was having technical difficulties.)

That-there critic oughta be told that there actually ARE one or two so-fist-it-kated American adults.
I done seen and heerd one, a time or two.
So there!

SaraCVT THAT is parenting done right. You rock, lady!

sendingtheclowns happy belated birthday (63 years young is the correct phrase)
you can watch some of the Doctor on YouTube for free

May 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara Anne

@ sendingintheclowns - Happy B-Day!!! Enjoy - you've earned it!!

@ zoomom...Gosh! That's quite an offer... I think it would be exceedingly dangerous/damaging to my waistline...might end up with two of me! (or one of me sooo wide, when I sit around the house, I'd really sit aaaaaround the HOUSE! :-) My kids, on the other hand, would eat it up!!! :-) Hubby is Cajun, so we probably should visit Canada (at least Quebec - are you anywhere in that area? Canada's a biiig country, ya know...) Oooh! My brother's in Seattle - that's like a stone's throw from Vancouver... :-) Have you seen that 'cronut' craze in NYC? They're $5 each & people are selling them on eBay (overnight shipping, etc.) for $50-60 a pop! (I miss donuts sooo much...:-( Did find a GFDFCFEF donut hole recipe that's pretty good & quick, though... :-)

Reading this site frequently reminds me that I really do need to watch Dr. Who one of these days...in my copious free time. How many seasons are we talking about??

Glitter tulle: just what I want with my frosting: I can use it strain out the plastic flotsam.

@ pikkewyntjie: yep, the duck looks like it wants to be a piƱata, but I can't imagine sticking a lit candle in one of those! The texture of the frosting reminds me of those little bits of tissue paper..

@ zoomom, your cakes look terrific: I love that you have a working light in your TARDIS. I also particularly like the adorable "tea party" cupcake and the lovely ones with the stained glass flowers (those are daisies, right?).

OMG, that weeping angel cake is AMAZING! Totally makes up for the effed up tardises (tardisi? tardiss?).

June 5, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterStar

I LOVE Doctor Who!!! And I got sooooo freaked out when I saw the weeping angel cake(s)!! I think we need more of these type of posts (without weeping angels...?), posts of Doctor Who wrecks and sweets! Also, my birthday is coming up, and I'm getting a DW cake... If it stinks, I'll send it in! Even if it doesn't... Still! Oh, and for all of you (yes, John and Jen too), who was your first Doctor, and who was your favorite?
