Sunday Sweets: Happy Easter!
April 8, 2012 It's Easter! I hope that news doesn't come as a shock to you. I would hate to send you on a frenzied run to the store for the last bag of plastic eggs and cheapo jelly beans, because you know that's all that's left by now. No, I hope the only egg hunting you're doing today involves eggs like this:

I love the use of jelly beans on this cake as tiny eggs for the bunnies to find! Or maybe they're actually those little chocolate eggs - I can't tell. Either way, it's Grade A adorable. (egg joke!)

And speaking of fantasies, sometimes I dream big and imagine Easter basket filler that won't be scattered through my house 'til Christmas.

And I think I've found the solution. Edible grass! I love the little tufts of it here and there on this cake, and even poking out of the duck's fist!
This next cake makes me weep for my piping skills, which have never actually existed.

I could no more free-hand the words "Happy Easter" in a fun and frilly font that perfectly matches the mood of this confection than fly to the moon.
But I COULD slather thick chocolate frosting on a cake to resemble bark, like this cake!

Oh, wait, then I scrolled down and saw the rest. I guess I'll have to work on perfecting my fondant roses, stems, and bunny bum. Maybe next year. Or the next.

Side Note: spring chickens are really cute and everything, but they don't make for good pets. Especially if you're say, in college, and find yourself kinda bored one day and decide to buy a little chick (it was like $2!) and keep it in a box in your dorm room. It's a bad idea. Or so I've heard.
All of which awakens the age old question: which came first, the egg-shaped cake pan or the chicken-shaped cake pan?

Sweet eggs in a basket!
(Is that a saying? It seems like it should be a saying.)
As if the dozen delightfully decorated eggs weren't enough, they're nestled into a huge chocolate basket of delectableness! It would be so easy to just snap off one of those handles and run. (Er, did I just say that out loud?)
And speaking of running, this candy isn't going to eat itself. Uh, I mean, I have my daily five mile run to...run. Yeah. That.

After the horrible messes earlier this week, it makes this Easter post especially Sweet!
Those are some mighty fine rodents--NO! sorry, lagomorphs. I know if I had that “Happy Easter” cake, I’d have a happy Easter (and if I made that “Happy Easter” cake, I’d be dreaming.)
And Jen, I’m still finding pine needles from my Christmas tree. That must be the same as finding Easter basket filler at Christmas. I just take them as a lovely reminder of a happy time.

A Sunday Sweets for my birthday, yay! I love that rainbow layered one, I think I will try it!

We had to switch from the plastic "grass" to shredded paper after the cat became a pull-toy and almost destroyed the house trying to run away from it :-)
I can't decide which I like more: the "Happy Easter" with the beautiful roses or the bunny heading into his burrow. Too cute! Happy Easter, everyone
I'm definitely going to start using "sweet eggs in a basket!" as a saying, as in Sweet Eggs in a Basket! Those are some gorgeous cakes! See? It totally works!
Also, since most of my homemade cakes are chocolate with thick, homemade butter-fudge frosting that end up looking like . . . well, at least the upper half of that tree stump cake, I think I'm going to just tell people that I make tree stump cakes on purpose! Yeah! And once they taste it they probably won't care anymore about the lack of cute flowers, bunny bums, teeny candy mushrooms, etc. (because yes, they DO taste very good, even if they look like bark, heh).

For the Rainbow cake I would put the flavours as Lemon, Lime, Blue Rasberry, Blueberry ('cause blueberries stain everything purple), and strawbeery (or cotton candy)!

Such gorgeous and fun cakes! And I chuckled at "bunny bum." Re: "Side Note" -- When I was a kid my folks bought us kids three colored live chicks -- I think they were green, pink and blue -- and we thought that they would grow up to be those colors. They didn't -- they all were just chicken-white. We raised 'em 'til adulthood, and then some lucky farmer got three meals.... Stores also sold yellow stuffed (dead) chicks, too.
I WANT that chick/egg cake, just because of the worm threading itself in and out of the earth... As soon as Passover is over (heh), I'm going to try to bake an egg-shaped cake. Jim Todd -- you have clearly been reading "CakeWrecks" for too long, as I have. It seeps into your brain, doesn't it? And I mean that in the best way ever!
Mmmmm my mom and I made an Easter lamb rum cake but the nose looks like blood! Wish I had decorating skills:(
What an eggstra special Sweets post! I especially like the rainbow layer cake. The first one and the decorated egg shape are also really nice---those pastel colors show up so well against a chocolate background! Happy Easter!

I've made that rainbow layered cake before but the outside looked NOTHING like that!
These are GREAT! In my mind, I envision being able to do something close to some of these, but in reality....NOPE! Not even close! So I'm content knowing they taste good :) (and since my family doesn't do any decorating or 'fancy stuff', they think my cakes are the bomb!)
Many beauties, however, the giant bunny on a bench in the background kinda freaks me out. I'm not visiting that house! Also, love the Loch Ness worm on the chicken/egg cake. Who says girl bunny cake isn't wheat grass flavored? Seems to be some severe grass deco icing all around that along with those carrots, plus she doesn't look too Easter-ey, without those buck teeth, she might be seductive. Not a good combo with those carrots! Last two were the best.

About girl Easter Bunnies: there is a very wonderful book titled The Country Bunny, by Dubose Hughes, which answers the boy/girl white/brown Easter Bunny question quite beautifully.

Gorgeous Sweets as always! But as a one time Rabbit-raiser; it always annoys me when I see bunny-feetz with PADS. Rabbits don't have pads on the bottom of their feet like cats and dogs do. Feel free to go cuddle a live bunny and check.
Unless the *Easter* bunny is some bizarre rabbit-kitty hybrid? :-P I don't think I'm going to go there.

I'm totally in love with the ruffles on the rainbow cake and the egg-shaped chicken looks like an Angry Bird that was teased by the other Angry Birds and is therefore, now, a Very Forlorn Bird. Poor chickie! (He should watch "For the Birds" by Pixar and learn how to take care of those feathered fiends!)

Would love to know how the baker lined up the icing ruffles on the outside of the rainbow layer cake. They are perfectly in line with the layers on the inside. One would assume these layers were covered by a layer of buttercream as the crumb layer. How did they line them up? Anyone?

Gigi, even with the crumb coat, you can still detect layers. Baker could have made a line or mark with toothpicks.

The "springtime chick" has duckling feet. Not that that makes him a better dorm pet.
As for the stunning rainbow cake, a recent issue of Victoria magazine featured a very similar, but pure cream-colored, cake on its cover. I considered attempting it until I saw it required something like a dozen egg whites just for the required eight or 10- cups of icing.
Love the colored layers - the puple one would be grape - and the flavors can be made by adding Kool-Aid to white cake batter.

I could not stop laughing at the reference to the chick in your dorm room! My boyfriend in college bought me one for Easter one year and we kept it in his dorm room lol What a nightmare it turned out to be once it stopped being cute and started being loud! I also kept a kitten I found in my dorm room for a few months. Glad to hear I'm not the only one! :)
my hubby and i bought that edible easter grass to use in our son's basket.. let me tell you, there's "edible" and there's "safe to ingest". the grass falls into the latter. it's apparently made out of coconut shavings collected some time in the jurassic period and buried underground like some sort of horrible kimchi. when you can't get a 7 year old to eat something "sweet" you know you've gone wrong. *shudders*
