What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: You're The Top!

Hello and welcome to The Wedding Cake Topper Emporium! Thank you for choosing us for all your wedding cake topper needs! From the improper to the show-stopper, we've got every type of topper! That's our slogan. I made it up myself. Here, let me show you around...

I can see that you're a special couple, and not just any old cake topper will do, no. You need to tell the story of your love through fondant and frosting! For instance, did you meet on a boat? Get engaged in a canoe? Reeeeeally like the movie Titanic?

Submitted by Nikki and made by Torten-Lotta

Near, far, wherever you are, here is the topper for you!

No, wait, don't tell me. You're a professor at the local university. She's the campus librarian who caught your eye. Each week you headed to the library to check out The Princess Bride, hoping that she would finally notice you and strike up a conversation about Buttercup and Westley...

Submitted by Vivienne V-L. and made by Peachy Juban

...wherein, beguiled by your wit and grace, she asked to meet you for coffee later, to which you replied with a breathy "As you wish." Your eyes locked, and at that moment you fell truly, madly, and deeply, and now you crazy kids want to commemorate it all on your wedding cake topper!

(Which even comes in a handy fun-size to send home with your guests!)

But maybe I'm being a bit too specific.

Perhaps a simple set of lovebirds would do the trick?

Submitted by Emma F. and made by Flickr user sugar_rush_confections

So strikingly sophisticated!

Or perhaps you had your first date in a park? Carved your initials in a tree? (So cute!) And there happened to be a lot of sheep around?

Submitted by Angie I. and made by Jagode & Dinozavri

Ha ha, what fun! We've got the topper for you!

Or were you childhood sweethearts? (Ahh, schoolyard romance...)

Submitted by Emily B. and made by All About Cake

Why not display your devotion with our patented 'Charmingly-Childlike Doodle Topper?' It's like a chalkboard drawing come to life!

Oh, I am growing rather fond of you two. You're such a couple of characters!

By Erin Salerno

Or should I say caricatures?

If you're finding it hard to make a decision, how about a compromise? It's the secret to successful marriages, I hear! So why not let the bride choose the cake, and the groom choose the topper?

Made by Laura A.

Or maybe in this instance it was the other way around. Either way, everybody wins!

Our Serengeti Sunsets line is also quite popular, representing solidarity, security and sensuality!

Submitted by Keeley S. and made by Bubolinkata

May your marriage be blessed with all three! And may you also be blessed with a honeymoon in the Serengeti, because wow, even in cake form it's gorgeous!

Ahhh, now here is one of my favorite toppers. Remember when your man went all Edward Cullen on you, and composed you your very own song? This beautiful topper can be an ode to your love, and an ode to your ode! (Does that make sense? It made sense in my brain. You know, before I said it out loud).

Submitted by Kristy L., and made by The Cupcake Gallery

Look at the bride's delicate little curl of hair! So demure and delightful, I think I'm getting weepy.

And finally, if you're looking for something over-the-top, sometimes it helps to look at the very bottom.

The bottom of the sea, that is!

Submitted by Kate O. and made by deviantART user ~The-EvIl-Plankton

"Darling it's better, down where it's wetter, under the sea!"

You can't see it, but the octopus is actually shaking eight tiny maracas*.

*Ok, not really. But wouldn't that be awesome?

Well, thanks so much for visiting The Wedding Cake Topper Emporium. Remember, we're your one-stop-cake-topper-shop! Shop till you drop at our topper shop! 'Cuz we don't sell no slop! At the hop! Pop pop, don't stop!

Yes, I'm done.

Have a Sweet to nominate? Then send it Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com.

The under the sea one looks like it's got more of a Vincent van Gogh vibe.

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBea

What! No rubber duckies???

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSuBee

Love the Shaun the Sheep cake

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDPL

Oh, great. Now I've got "Under the Sea" stuck in my head. Where I'm sure it will remain for the next several weeks as my co-workers repeatedly stop to ask me why I keep coming back to this sight just to giggle at the caricature topper(did you see the lipstick stains on the groom?!) and sob at the piano-player one.
P.S. Why is the "princess bride" topper birds? Inconceivable!

The sheep on cake four are from a British short Disney Channel licensed a few years ago called "Shaun the Sheep." It's the cutest thing ever. They expanded the concept to Disney Junior with the baby sheep (on the second to top tier) and his adventures in pre-school in a show called "Timmy Time." It's adorable. Both shows are hilarious and full of British humor, even the educational "Timmy Time." I'm not sure if it's a show in the UK or not, but it only played in the US for a short time, and I miss it now that it's not on anymore. I do think it's on Netflix, if you want to check it out.

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKristin E.

For what it's worth, I think the park one is covered in Shaun the Sheep sheeps. It's an adorable claymation cartoon series by the Wallace and Grommit folks. Available on Netflix streaming!

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRosa

I think the sheep are from the TV show "Shaun the Sheep"

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAndrew

I believe that the 3rd cake is a homage to Shaun the Sheep which, really, you need to be aware of if you're not already!!! SO FUNNY!

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterShidaPida

The Rock Em Sock Em Robots cake topper reminds of Sweet Home Alabama! It was Melanie and Jake's cake topper during their wedding at the end of the movie.

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLyndsay

Oh my goodness! Shaun the Sheep and Timmy on a cake?! SO AWESOME! (Cake #4 for those who don't know.)

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAlex T. Valencic

The Sunday Sweets of today are the inspiration cakes for the wrecks of tomorrow! I can just see the mermaid cake going very, very wrong in the future.

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterErin B

Uh oh, I think we have a Sheepcot!

I can't get over the "flying" rays on that last cke. Though I agree, maracas would take it to the next level.

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterFlartus

Wow, it seems as if there will be an Epcot about Shaun the Sheep xD

I LOVE these cakes :3 I hope whoever I marry plays piano so I can have that beautiful cake <3

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLeighAnne

I only wish the StS cake had Shirley on it, she's so giant, she would be adorable in fondant!

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterHawkinsss

really? oscar sunday and your subject is cake toppers?
well, that said, they ARE amazing and i especially love the final under the sea theme. absolutely breathtaking work on that....

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermickeyp415

A friend of mine's husband is a professional piano and organ player. To propose, he wrote her a song, then played it for her. She has a tattoo of the sheet music on her arm. :)

Anyone else find the characture cake toppers creepy looking?

And so exciting to see Shaun the Sheep and Timmy on a cake! Shaun was originally in the Wallace and Gromit short "Close Shave", and then got his own show. As others have said, it, and Timmy Time, are both on Netflix, and well worth catching!

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLizzyBean

The groom on the caricature cake is scaring me a little, but I do admire the skill involved in that and the other cakes. All the birds and the Serengeti cake in particular-- just darling!

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNaomi

HA! Sheepcot. I'm gonna hide in the bunker with a nice wool blanket on this chilly morning..

Love the feature of toppers today.. great post!

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterstaxia

I love all of these! But especially the Shawn the Sheep one :)

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMarie-Eve Lohman

I am in LOVE with the "Doodle Topper"!!

Thank you for featuring our cake and cupcakes! Even the scenario was spot on - except that I'm the professor and he's a Kiwi surfer (Peachy even copied the design on his red surfboard).

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered Commentervivienne

I love all of both the sea cake, and the Serengeti one. Also, I must get round to seeing more of Shaun the Sheep; I haven't seen any, but I loved "A Close Shave".

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJan

The smaller birds look like they haven't finished hatching from yellow-dyed eggs.

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterClassic Steve

Sheepcot! That's good!
I'll bring some cheese to the bunker. Maybe a nice bit of gorgonzola.

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterzoomom

Ok, so I'll have to check out Shaun the Sheep ;) But I need The Princess Bride birds explained to me. The blue one looks like a cross between Gonzo and a kiwi while the yellow one is more like egg meets Eggbert. "Ah say, Ah say..."

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterlen

Just one question--why did we feel the need to make the Princess Bride and Groom birds? Oh, well...As you wish!

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

I'm going to pretend that those amazing merfolk are playing Connect Four.

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterHaiku Joy

@Haiku Joy, that's hilarious! Now I can't un-see it!

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterzoomom

Now I have the Shaun the Sheep theme stuck in my head!

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterGretchen

Nobody has mentioned so far how amazing that piano is! Seriously, I think it has the right number of keys for an actual piano. And the inside is all detailed, and the music stand part is correct... I was half-expecting to see little tiny hammers inside! (Wait, are there? I can't quite tell!) And the figurines have completely cute faces and don't look the slightest bit wonky, and you're absolutely right about that adorable hair curl. Fantastic!

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterScanderoon

That last cake is gorgeous! I love the rays and the octopus, even without the maracas!

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterkristie

I think I'm the only naughty one here who's wondering how the merman is stuck onto the cake...

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMnDina

How cute and unique :D

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

the last cake is stupefying. I'd get married just so I could have that. (swoon) the details, the rich colors, the proportions! ahhhhhhhhhhhh

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara Anne

These are all amazing! The Serengeti one is breathtakingly beautiful, the sheep are adorable, the RESE robots are hilarious and the cake they're on is really pretty (though the mismatch between the two just makes it even funnier), the little reading and surfing birds are so cute (and I love the matching cupcake favors!), the cake the caricatures are sitting on is so visually different and wonderful (and I love the lipstick prints on his face and the grins on the pair of them), the cake bearing the Titanic couple is really gorgeous in its colors and details, the 'doodle' pair is so unique and cute (and their cake and cupcakes are very striking), the lovebird cake is lovely, the piano serenade makes me smile so much, and the mermaids are unbelievable in the level of detail and texture. Did I forget anyone? I would be beside myself with joy to have any one of those cakes at my wedding!

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEve

@zoomom

I'll join you -- but I think it has to be wensleydale!

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered Commentera.nony.mouse

SHAUN THE SHEEP WEDDING CAKE! Now I really need to find a would-be husband...I must have that cake!

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTanya

The birds cake looks like it was the inspiration for the Tornado Cake (not to be confused with funnel cake).

The piano is incredibly accurate, even to the felt damper strip on the bass strings. If it was made for the occasion, I might have to do the guy equivalent of a squee (Tim Taylor 'oh-oh-oh', perhaps). I just hope it isn't edible -- I'd hate to think of that much detail going into something that then disappears in a chorus of 'noms'.

Then... "Are you a real merman?" "Yes. Just don't call me 'Ethel' -- you can't believe how tired I am of hearing that. And no, I don't sing. Well, maybe in the shower..."

I'll be along to the Bunker shortly -- I was thinking perhaps some Venezuelan Beaver cheese or some Japanese Sage Darby would be nice. I'll just nip over to the National Cheese Emporium to engage in some commerce. I might be a while...

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

Wait for the regular Monday to Friday versions of these cakes... Just wait...

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAisha

There I was scrolling through the posts thinking, "Oh, that's nice." "Yes, very pretty."

Then I hit the last picture and my jaw rebounded off the desk. Maracas would be perfect too.

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterGinger

Please tell me that the merman is held up by something, anything, other than what comes into my admittedly not-so-pristine mind. He really should have some visible means of support. Literally. These are all amazing cakes.

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJanet

the only problem is now I'm stuck on how the merman is stuck on....

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterHolly

The sheep with the dummy in is Timmy and the others are Shaun alikes. Timmy Time still airs on Cbeebies (the BBC's channel for younger children) in the UK and Shaun The Sheep shows on their older kids channel, both are brilliant and well loved by all ages over here. And yes it does *have* to be Wensleydale, preferably a nice bit thereof. :D

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterkatiecakepop

That mermaid/man cake is beyond fabulous. The attention to detail on the sharks and rays is... Just... WOW!!!!

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBADKarma

I imagine the mermaid cake to be something like what Peeta made for Finnick and Annie in Mockingjay (The Hunger Games).

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterReyna

I'm glad Lyndsay mentioned Sweet Home Alabama. That's what I thought of immediately!

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

"Darling it's better down where it's wetter"....Whisky Tango Foxtrot...pass me my
thought bleach please!

February 27, 2012 | Unregistered Commentertantanz

The piano topper is beautiful, but it's kind of insulting to anyone who's ever written a song for someone to compare that to Edward Cullen. In fact, it's insulting to anyone who's ever written a song, ever.

February 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBassBone

I think the caricature cake bride looks like Chelsea Clinton.
