What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Why They Spell It "Xmas"

Like a crazed shopper hurtling towards the last Star Wars Lego kit, Christmas is nearly upon us. So, for those of you celebrating tomorrow, allow me and John and Number 1 and Wrecky Minion Julianne to serenade you with a little seasonal ditty:

We wish you a...

We wish you a...

We WISH you a...

Er...no...hang on.

No...

Getting closer...

THAT's it.

And, because:

We also have to give a very special birthday shout-out:

Also known as:

And for those of you celebrating other special days this month, allow us to simply say:

And may you all have a blissfully wreck-less holly daze!

Thanks to Paitence L., Susan L., Sarah O., Pamela V., Matthew P., Janice R., Chris G., Nicole K., Melissa P., & Lyne S. for helping us spell that out.

The Santa on the first cake looks like the comic Maxine!

Merry Christmax everyone! And remember, Until Us A Child is Born!

Happy Birthday Juses ! er, Jesue! er...

Wreck-less? Does that mean there will be no Christmas edition of Sundays sweets?

December 24, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSunshine Mary

That first Chritmas cake has everything: Fluffy green stelagmites, a strawberry forest, Sarah Juanita roses, Santy Gnomes. It's that thing when garden gnomes have no hands, but they're full of Christmas spirit anyway...

Happy Christmahannakwanzica to all!

And a Mary Xmas to you too! What a shame on Wreck #2, it's a very pretty cake with lovely penmanship, they just tried a little TOO hard and put in that extra i. But that first one, holy moley! What on earth were they going for there? Looks like Santa sinking into an springtime tar pit.

December 24, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJulie

Just literally stumbled onto your site (thumb's up), but man are these cakes hilarious! I'll give the Happy Hollyday cake at the end the benefit of the doubt, but some of these are just horrendous, even without the misspellings. Too bad there's no spell check for frosting...

I do believe Cake Five is the aurora borealis! But perhaps by a color-blind decorator? I've never seen the look like that before!

Mery Christmas!

By the time I got through I couldn't even remember how to spell Christmas any more. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday weekend!

These cakes make me feel better about the way my kids spell!

It's a busy time of year, lots of preparations going on, but in the midst of it I'd like to take a minute to send some warm Christmas wishes to the Cake Wrecks team and to all you wild, weird, wacky fellow-commenters. Every day you gift me with laughter; thank you!

December 24, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterzoomom

That last cake looks like "Holiday" was spelled correctly and and then the "i" was wiped out and an "l" and a "y" were squeezed in. So they "corrected" to a mistake!

December 24, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterStuckinMN

Cake #1: So how come I'm the only one who sees a pink Santa dressed in nothing but boots and heart shaped pasties? Am I a complete perv? (Thank goodness for Santa's tummy apron)

December 24, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterspel chek

I can't be the only one out there who is concerned that the "Santa" in cake #1 has no arms and is wearing pasties.

December 24, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCat

For the last one, it is possible that it's not a mistake. I've seen a lot of "cutesy" holiday stuff that will say "Happy Holly-days" with the requisite heaps of holly berries all around.

That said, it still looks fairly disastrous.

December 24, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterYemy

Hysterical! Cake #5 looks like it got a container of rainbow sherbet melted on it.

December 24, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJen

Well, so much for holiday leave for DOC...

#1 Really does have it all: cole slaw, artichoke heart, suspiciously shiny strawberries, goth 'Santa' and enough black frosting to ensure screams of terror from the bathroom (when brushing teeth). And the spelling thing. They did a passable job on the daisies, though.

#2 Apple's iCake didn't do well in marketing tests and was shelved.

#3 Clever wreckerator (bet you never put those words together before) -- that's one way to slip past a ban.

#4 [Customer, glancing pointedly at cake:] "Uh, excuse me -- do you know where I can find the 't'?" [Wreckerator, as irony goes blissfully unnoticed]: "Sure, it's on aisle 5."

#5 I'll give the wreckerator points for trying. But I wouldn't put the giant correction ribbon away just yet, and that frosting looks suspiciously like a gel. I wouldn't worry about it being confiscated, though.

#6 There are girls who are named this. Whether to get out in front of the inevitable jokes that key on the last name or to provoke same is a tough call.

#7 Somebody had to go and create a cake-writing app for 'smart' phones. If only they had bypassed autocorrection...

#8 Oy.

#9 looks like it was written by a committee. The 'name guy' didn't do his research as carefully as he might have.

#10 They were trying to avoid a visit from DOC, and wound up ensuring one. Mwahahahaha.

Merry Christmas to you and your family! Thank you for my daily giggles!

December 24, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSusanB

Is it me or does the Santa on cake #1 appear to be sporting pasties? Lol!

December 24, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNicole

Wow, that just makes me sad.

December 24, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBarbra

On the first cake - can't figure out whether Santa has breastusses, or is wearing some kind of mutant octopus body, but.... [shuddering] Word to wreckerator - drawing a belt onto something that's vaguely colored pink or red does not a Santa suit make. And throwing on yellow roses (wtf?) and strawberries just because you have 'em lying around isn't helping.

Happy birthday Juses... Joshua... Jesper... whatever your name is! And to the rest of the Cake Wrecks fan family, Happy Holly Daze.

December 24, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBeverly Diehl

Merry Christmas Cake Wrecks crew! Thanks for all the laughs!

December 24, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRU

The first cake frightens and confuses me: why are breasts, yellow flowers and strawberries wishing me a Merry Chritmas? What do breasts care about christmas?

December 24, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLetitia

Um, no snarky comments are coming to mind that meet the wreckiness of these cakes. Seriously? I mean, it's not like this holiday doesn't come around EVERY YEAR! People should be able to learn how to spell. Yikes.

Thanks for the laughs! Merry Christmas Jen, John, and all the wrecky henchpersons you have helping you.

Why spell Christmas with an 'X'? It's just laziness, I guess. It may simple or it may be complex, but why spell Christmas with an 'X'?

December 24, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

We made two Happy Birthday Jesus cakes today.

December 24, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterValHallaGirl

Cake #9: That is actually pretty close to the origional Jewish spelling of his name. Yeshua weird what you pick up online.

December 24, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKelticat

Yep, Santa is nude except for his thong and pasties, is sinking into the La Brea tar pit, and has no arms unless they are already submerged. That's super festive! (yikes.)

December 24, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSolarmama

This post gave me a headache and I'm going to lie down now. (sigh)

"Happy Birthday Juses" Oh yeah, this will keep me laughing all through the holidays

December 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKelsey

Laura, Christmas is sometimes spelled with an X because many of the original Gospels were written in Greek, and the first letter of "Christ" in Greek is the letter chi, which is written as an X. So it's an abbreviation which has been around since the beginning, pretty well.

I shudder to think what would happen if we were to introduce Stripper Santa to Bedroom Santa & Rudolph.

December 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMetz

The demon Santa, Alien-Pod Strawberries, random pointless yellow roses, triffids, and black frosting on that first one combine to make it an EPIC, EPIC, E P I C WIN.

December 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBADKarma

How do you become a Cake Wrecks writer? No, seriously. HOWWWWWWW???!?!?!!!?!?!!

December 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterG

A thought,
Stripper Santa puts the XXX in X-Mas.
*runs away to hide*

December 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMetz

Now if they had botched up Chanukah, or Hanukkah or Chanukkah, or Chanuka.....

AFAIK the spelling of Christmas (aside from the abbreviated Xmas) is not disputed, nor is Yule..nor Kwaanza.

Happy quinoa?

December 27, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSpike

Maybe the decorator of wreck #1 is a gamer? Critmas is a D&D term........

Accidentally found this site & I MUST say, how I absolutely love it! Both my 13 yr old daughter & I were laughing with tears at some of your posts. It's also given me a new appreciation for "cake art",.. if that's the right title. :)
