What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sullen Sully

Hi all! Number 1 here with an ode to my favorite PIXAR movie: Monsters Inc.! Every single time I see it, I laugh harder than I did before. I'm not the only one, either. Loyal Wreckporter Michelle and her grandson Zacharia love this animated masterpiece so much they even ordered a cake that looked like James P. Sullivan, or "Sully," for Zacharia's 2nd birthday.

In case you've never seen the film, here's what Sully looks like:

Now, ready to see what Michelle got back from the bakery?

(wait for it...)

(keep waiting...)

(don't forget how cute and fluffy Sully is...)

Aaaand...

Presto!

"Oh, you're supposed to bake the cake before you frost it? That explains a lot."

Are you on the phone with Ghostbusters? Need a closer view for a more accurate description?
"He slimed me."

Good gravy, if this monstrosity popped out of my closet when I was a kid, I'd still be sleeping with a nightlight...and a rifle.

Of course, what matters is what the birthday Boo thought of his special cake:

'Nuff said.

Thanks, Michelle R. for sending in this sugary beast. Better luck next year, Zach!

I'm not sure what made me laugh more - the cake, the child's face - or the comments from Taylor and Trek (who I picture sitting there staring open-mouthed at the screen before writing ...thoughtfully..."it looks like a teal pig....")

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSapphragette

Maybe in some way it was good that the cake was not an accurate replica of Sully. All I can imagine is what the kid's response would be watching Sully being sliced up and then eaten.

Oh the nightmares!

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterNoelle

That would be a perfectly cute monster cake if it wasn't supposed to be SOMETHING SPECIFIC.

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Sorry, but I disagree that the customer in this case was just as much at fault for expecting too much for the price. If the bakery couldn't make it look like Sully, then they shouldn't have accepted the order. If it were me, I wouldn't have given them a dime and left the wreck with them. On the way to the party I would've picked up a sheet cake at the grocery store. That would have been better than a giant blue Slimer-teddy with nobby horns. So I guess the customer was at fault after all . . . for paying for the thing after they saw it. That picture of the birthday Boo will be in his baby book for prosperity . . . all because the bakery didn't say "Sorry, we lake the skills to pull this off."

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

When the picture of the cake was revealed, I just cracked up laughing! I hope the poor kid didn't run out of the room screaming...

Ummmm...gross??? Think of poor Birthday Boo's poo after all that blue!!!!! EEEWWWWW!!!! (see what I did there? *grin*)

The Easter Bunny brought my 8 yo ds the complete collection of Pixar shorts on DVD. It's awesome!! "For the Birds" is my hands down, all time favorite. I laugh like a drunken hyena EVERY time I watch it. EVERY time.

wv: elfeig. No, I would NOT like a second elfeig of that monstrosity!

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

LOVE that scene from Monster's, Inc. I laugh every time I see that scene. The music matching the fainting is just classic!

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterlaura

Love Presto!

Poor little guy. Hope next year's cake is much better.

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJerry

Am I the only one who thinks this looks reasonably like the character (for a cake sculpture) and is pretty cute overall? I think the look on the boy's face is the look of a two-year old at a birthday party--they're still trying to figure the whole thing out at that age.

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterbobo

OMG. His face is priceless!

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLeah

It's not that bad looking, really.

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnita

I'm wondering what part of your favorite part makes it your favorite?

I was thinking maybe the look on his face just before he faints...

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterB-Jo

Noooo!!!

Somebody melted Cookie Monster! Those fiends!

Wait...that is suppose to be Sully? Boy is that bad. That big lipped muppet er monter er alligator....what IS that thing?

This is Sully!!! BTW Cry for him collapsing.....Life just isn't fair...Sniff.

Maybe all of the cake wrecks have finally worn me down, but I don't think this one is that bad. How much was paid for it?

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterIvan

A lot of specialty sculpted cakes get paid for up front (or at least partially-paid-for up front), so I won't even go so far as to blame the parents for that!

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

That looked like Cookie Monster gone horribly, horribly, wrong. But then again, I probably couldn't do any better...

my favorite movie too!!

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I thought it said, "if this monstrosity pooped out of my closet." Which made me laugh really hard....because this cake looks like it got pooped out...of what I do not know.

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

I love Pixar, I love Disney, and I cannot wait for Monsters Inc 2! Nov 2012! However, I am not so much loving this Sully cake.

Heh heh. Maybe they should've been worried about giving the kid nightmares.
But anyway, I don't think it's even supposed to be Sully.
I think it's Yllus-- Sully's alter(ed) ego......thingy.
But what PART of him is that lumpy lump thing on the plate that they're setting down in front of the child (who is probably wondering the same thing)?

=^e.e^=

Jen,

If you liked the "Sully thinks Boo is dead" scene, you should check out the Loony Toon Pixar was paying homage to. You want to check out "Feed The Kitty" on youtube. Unless cute kittehs skeeve you out.

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJeffrey

"How many kids you got in there?!" is probably my favorite line, so I'm really happy that this is your fave scene.

And the comments made me laugh harder.

I don't think it's such a wreck... they did use cookies for his horns which I think is pretty inventive.

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterChristina

They should've told the kid "they couldn't make a Sully, so here's a cookie monster instead!"

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterbekah

It kinda looks like a half-melted Muppet...

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLittle Luxuries

Now, yes, that was the best scene in MI (love that movie too!) but you have to also credit the classic Warner Bros cartoon with Marc Antony the bulldog and his little pet kitty ROFL

Oh dear. Now Boo WILL have nightmares.

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

thank you for the link to Presto! We DO already have it on our WALL-E DVD but this was much less hassle!!

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

hehehehehe even the kid knows it's a wreck

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Why does sully have moobs? He should have peks! We love Mike and Sully in our house. Well, we love all Pixar movies.

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Love the movie but that cake is a WTF-style fail.

Have you seen the bloopers for the movie? I love them.

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLaurel the Kitty

H's still such a cute monster! there's only so much you can ruin him and he's still cute.

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Ok I looooove this movie, but who the heck is that cake? Certanly not Sully... maybe it's Sully's jello-like baby nephew?! lol

Pustules. Purple Pustules.

June 10, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCatherine

You know, I think this is a situation where airbrushing might actually have helped.

June 10, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCatherine

Gotta love the look on his little face. I submitted a Sully cake, and many other, but I guess you still don't get to them Jen, I promise they're all wrecktastic ):

June 10, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLucĂa

I think that Sully was a bit of a challenge as it is, and if they'd put in more effort to get the facial features proportioned correctly (smaller eyes higher up and closer together, smaller nose, mouth higher up) and the purple spots on the fur in the right places, then it may well have sufficed.

Is there any actual cake underneath all of that blue splodgy stuff? How can such things possibly be acceptable as food for children?

June 10, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

That poor kid getting a slimed cake for his birthday.. what on earth did the wreckerators do to it. Maybe it is best if I just back away and pretend I didn't see it.. *hums* as I quickly walk away lol.

June 10, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterArlene

presto digiatagione! lol! i didn't catch that first time around!

(when i played a mage in D&D prestidigitation was my favorite spell... SO underrated!)

June 10, 2010 | Unregistered Commenter~melly

IF you have ever seen the classic warners cartoon "feed the Kitty" you would know Sully's reactions mirror (or copy) Marc Antony's when he thinks his Kitty has been made into a cookie. Pure classic Warners/Chuck Jones.

June 10, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

I'm so with that kid on this one! "The hell....?" is the perfect expression on his face! ROFL

June 10, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

LOVED the Presto short! Thanks for the link and the recommendation :P

June 10, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKatherine

My 8 year old's comment: "That is so freakin' wrong."

June 10, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterweb

my favorite part of Monsters Inc - when Sully is showing Boo that Randall's not in the closet - "it's empty! see, no monster in here! ::steps inside closet:: Well, now there is..."

June 10, 2010 | Unregistered Commenteraimee

Well, it doesn't look anything like Sully, and I can't imagine the toxic blue icing tasted very nice...but he's a cute monster anyway, albeit a bit slimy looking...but some monsters are slimy and they can be quite sensitive about it.

:-)

June 11, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterShannon

OH. MY. GOODNESS. I haven't laughed that hard in a good while. Much appreciated!! lol

June 11, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterBecca

I have to say, Monster's INC has got to be one of my favorites. Finding Nemo is right up there too.

June 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterChelsea

I have a sully stuffed and a boo cup from disney on ice. I called my husband kitty forever and he called me boo. He surprised me with the tickets for our wedding anniversary.

June 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

They gave him man-boobs. Not cool.

Aaaaawwwww! I think that cake is adorably cute! How he's just sitting there, looking a little apologetic at his own presence, it makes me feel like taking it home and making it feel wanted!

June 15, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

My daughter was looking at that, and critiquing it.
"It doesn't have its horns, and it looks like it cut of a little bit of its head."

My younger daughter insisted on a Monsters, Inc. cake for her 2nd birthday, so I went to the wholesale club, and had the plastic toppers added. easy peasy
