What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sullen Sully

Hi all! Number 1 here with an ode to my favorite PIXAR movie: Monsters Inc.! Every single time I see it, I laugh harder than I did before. I'm not the only one, either. Loyal Wreckporter Michelle and her grandson Zacharia love this animated masterpiece so much they even ordered a cake that looked like James P. Sullivan, or "Sully," for Zacharia's 2nd birthday.

In case you've never seen the film, here's what Sully looks like:

Now, ready to see what Michelle got back from the bakery?

(wait for it...)

(keep waiting...)

(don't forget how cute and fluffy Sully is...)

Aaaand...

Presto!

"Oh, you're supposed to bake the cake before you frost it? That explains a lot."

Are you on the phone with Ghostbusters? Need a closer view for a more accurate description?
"He slimed me."

Good gravy, if this monstrosity popped out of my closet when I was a kid, I'd still be sleeping with a nightlight...and a rifle.

Of course, what matters is what the birthday Boo thought of his special cake:

'Nuff said.

Thanks, Michelle R. for sending in this sugary beast. Better luck next year, Zach!

"Put that thing back where it came from! Or so help me! So help me!"

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTaylor

I am pretty much looking like the kid in the picture... but hugs for you for the Presto nod!!

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterFluffy Cow

It's like they had no clue so used the teddy bear pan...
That child's face says it all!!!
"Epic FAIL!"
I hope Z had a great birthday anyway!

Oh, the poor kid. A blue slime birthday cake.

On the other hand...*mwah* for posting links that work outside the US.

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

That scene from Monsters Inc. is a family favorite! My kids are in hysterics every time Sully faints...and faints...and faints. Truly the best Pixar movie so far.

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAmy Park

I heart Monsters, Inc., too! I even have a Sully (gift from the husband) sitting on my dresser, and I can verify this cake does not resemble the stuffed version of Sully, either. The poor birthday boy has the right expression on his face.

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

That's my favourite Monsters scene, too!! Everytime he swoons, I shriek with laughter.

Everytime.

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSue

it does not look like Sully but I think he is still pretty cute

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTatum

Oh my gosh, the look on that little boy's face is PRICELESS!!

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKatie

Is there a Monsters Inc. cake curse? Remember Norman Davis had a cake wreck on his hands when he tried to do Sully on the Food Network Cake Challenge?!]

While I agree that this is certainly a wreck to be sure, I wonder what the client paid for this cake and what they REALLY expected to get... a scale model Sully with his EXACT likeness for $100? I think some parents watch these cake challenges and then set themselves up for failure thinking they can run out to Ma's Cake Shack and pick up comparable cakes on budget prices.

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterChad

The look on that little boy's face makes me want to cry. How sad.

Someone should probably send a "Thank you" note to the bakery that made this with that photo enclosed. Then maybe next time they'd learn not to suck.

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterpostmommy

Well, I wonder if this was a 'professional' baker (ie Safeway or Walmart) or a professional baker (ie Charm City or one of the Sunday Sweets bakers). If they wanted such a specific cake, and went to Walmart, then I'd say they share in the fail.

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJeff

Gah he's a cutie...he's expression to go along with his EPIC CAKE FAIL is priceless. Monsters Inc is my fav to..I feel his pain!

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLauren Borquez

Ooh, are there enough good cakes out there to do a Monsters, Inc. Sunday Sweets?

And thanks for the Presto link - I had never seen it!

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered Commentercatherine ann

YOu bought a cake that frightened the birthday boy.

so bad.

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMary Connealy

Yeah, that probably is the best scene from Monsters. And it's a good thing it's such a funny movie, because my 2 year old watched it every day for like 2 months straight. There are not many movies I could stand to see that often without developing a deep hatred for them.

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterElsha

Thank you for the link to Monster's Inc. :-) I love the fainting ... and fainting ... and fainting.

And the quivery lip when Sully gives Mike the "Boo garbage cube." Too adorable.

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterErica

I think I'd at least give the bakery a few points for making the cake a 3-D character, even if it does look like a cross between Sully's little brother and Cookie Monster!

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterbassgirl

Oh my goodness! Look at his face! Poor little guy!

Love monsters inc. and it was my late son geraints fav too we have a little sully next to his pic! he would love Cake wrecks!! :D

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterdiddleymaz

Oh that face!

Oh man, great post. Now excuse me while I go dig out this DVD and have a happy moment :3

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSilver

I probably shouldn't say anything because I know if I had a go it would end up looking like something that crawled out from under a rock and probably should have been left there...and squashed...and never let out again...

But...wow that Sully looks evil!

And now I want to go and watch Monsters inc. again! I love Mike's plan to get rid of Boo '...using mainly spoons'

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterOdd Bob

That is my favorite scene, too. I'm 37 and giggle harder each time I watch it.

wv: inking= I have an inking that I'll watch Monsters Inc later on today.

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLarisa

Slime is, of course, no good. but how would you do a good cake of a furry character?

I'm sure I don't have enough experience, but is it the conception or the execution or both that failed here?

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterErin

Oh my...there are NO words.

LOVE "Presto"...when I saw it at the movie theatre (before Wall-E), I laughed hysterically...almost on the floor! One of the best "Shorts" that Pixar has put out.

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSalann

It's actually kinda' cute in a silly-string-on-a-humid-day-way. Smaller tip would have helped.

Lips are bang on.

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterDecadent Housewife

OMG that Presto video was adorable!!! Thanks for sharing!

and that scene from Monsters...AWWwwww

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterjo

All things considered, this cake is not that bad in my opinion. It's not a perfect Sully for sure but it is cute. At least it LOOKS like some sort of monster if not like Sully. Usually the wrecks are unrecognizable or just plain ugly. I kinda like this one!

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterReg

obviously not the home of a dentist...*gags thinking of slimy blue teeth*

wv: pulthe. The sound you make when you spit out slimy blue frosting. Or, what an EMT with a lisp says he's checking on an unconscious person. Though with a mouthful of gross blue icing, anyone would pronounce it that way. hopefully, choking on the icing wouldn't render one unconscious.

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterjo

To the person who asked how to make frosting fur, here is a great non-pro cookie monster cake that is the definition of cute:

Here's another amateur cake with Sully fur and a very cute Mike: http://www.coolest-birthday-cakes.com/coolest-monsters-inc-birthday-cake-9.html

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKore

As a long time Pixar nut.. and consistent Pixar applicant (Eventually they'll call me, right?)

That is not Kitty!!

But from a distance, it's pretty damn cute lol Up close? Yeah. blue slime creature, not so appealling, cuddly or wonderful.

Love the lil guys face!!
*counting down the days till TS:3 opens! I got a ticket to opening day from director Lee Unkrich via twitter, woo!*

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLaurel

God that's awful. Monster Inc. is my fav too! My chihuahua is named after Sulley

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLiz

My two year old thought it was a blue seal . . .not even close to Sully.

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Looks like a teal pig.

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered Commentertrek

I adore Monsters, Inc.--although I think that my very favoritest bit is at the very end, where they don't show the reunion--just Sully's face. I want a monster like Sully.

And that cake--there are no words. Poor birthday Boo.

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered Commentermadrobins

Uh...yeah.
Kid looks thrilled, huh?
So, the color's a bit off, and it's not so much "fuzzy" as it is...well...slickilicious. But gee, other than that, it's horrendous.
At least he's only two, so he probably won't remember much about --oh, wait! They had to go and take pictures! That kid'll KILL his parents when he's older. We have a home movie from when I was about 4, and I wanted play guns (like my big brother had) and I got *cute* little tiny girl guns. In the flick, I open them and then slap my forehead like "Ahhh! You've GOT to be KIDDING!" And everybody ALWAYS thinks that's sooo funny.
Yup; this kid'll won't be any more thrilled later than he is there!

=^e.e^=

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

Poor little Boo!

Love, love, love Presto! I'm so glad you reminded me to see it again!

(My family is obsessed with "Boundin'", from the Incredibles movie. My daughter's favorite color is heliotrope!)

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKelly

For a 2-year-old, a good-looking, furred 3-D Sully isn't worth what the cake would cost.

I'd stop at a day's pay for the cake, and even that would probably be extravagant. Go with a cut sheet.

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterRoland

Oh, and just in case anyone wonders,(??) the phrase: "this kid'll won't"
ACTUALLY means that this kid WILL WON'T. Taking it further, "this kid will will not" because "won't" stands for "will not," because NOBODY says, "willn't."
What it *ACTually actually* means is that I got up too early.
HA!!! =^@.@^=

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

Love the Presto Bunny! Too cute! I had forgotten all about that cartoon short. Thanks!

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterChar

*Hugs Taylor for the number one comment*

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterFluffy Cow

When Sully was a baby monster, he looked exactly like the cake.

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCranky

The picture of the kid's expression is priceless. Maybe they were worried about copyright violations, so they made it so there'd be no way it could possibly be mistaken for the real thing?

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKara

"hot air balloon? Too expensive.

Enormous Wooden horse? Too Greek!"

Love it!

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLaree

My son said, "Poor kid! He didn't get a cake that looked like Sully!"

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterThe Litwillers

I don't think it's all that bad. The icing is a little thin & melty but that's about it. I think they did a good job. That's a hard monster to make a cake out of!

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

My 4 year old daughter walked up as I was looking at this and said "Mommy, that monster cake is disgusting!!". It's sad when even young children can tell how bad a cake wreck is lol!

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKim Kemp

Just had to say that Presto is, hands down, my absolute favorite Pixar short! Of course, there has not been anything Pixar has done that I haven't loved. I <3 Pixar!

And that Sully cake is so sad.

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLadybug914

Poor Sully got all melted. Love the look of the kid...."what the heck is that!"
