What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Are You Ready for Some Football?!

Hey Superbowl fans, Anne-Marie here! Did you know the Big Game is right around the corner? Yup, time to get those Terrible Towels and foam fingers out of the basement, whip up a yummy batch of deep-fried cheesy sausage poofs, and plunk down on the couch for five hours of testosterone-fueled annihilation!!

With all this testosterone-fueled frenzy, though, I think the nation's wreckerators may be, well, just too frenzied for quality control:

A little swirled poo, anyone?

"Or, hey, we don't have to use all those cupcakes! How about just four, and then put a big plastic football on top?"

"Yeah, that's the ticket!"

"Oh, or there's always recycling! Don't we have some leftover baseball cakes from last year's World Series? Let's use 'em! I'm sure no one will ever notice."

And if you're really stuck for ideas, there's always last year's cake decal. You might need to modify it a little, though:

"Perfect!"

Thanks to Stephanie R., Jennifer W., Jennifer T. and David C.!

This is even funny for those of us in Europe who have never seen an American football game... and would prefer not to....

I think those last two were done just to see if they could get on Cake Wrecks. I don't know any other way to explain them.

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterThe Courteous Chihuahua

Actually, the football/baseball theme would work here---the new football stadium for the Dallas Cowboys is practically within spittin' distance of the baseball Ballpark. But, they should have added more flotsum--like soccer balls and golf clubs for more diversity. Ha. and maybe a beer bottle or two?

Hey I love the foot-base cake. You round third base and sack the catcher, right?
Love the re-used decoration too...just think of how much they're reducing their carbon...er...cake print. Nobody will ever notice that half of it is cut off! Flawless!

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLeslie

By just reading the title I knew there was going to be at least one lump of frosting that looked like poop. The CCC is the worst.

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHorribleLicensePlates

eesh! that's just insane.

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterFeisty Irish Wench

Love it! Today is my birthday, and I'm a big Steeler fan so I'm very much looking forward to Sunday... these cakes just made my morning.

The baseball diamond is classic. <3

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBeckey

I saw a swirly poo football cake yesterday at the grocery...yuck! Everyone that walked by it wrinkled their noses...hilarious!

I LOVE this blog!!! It makes me feel so much better about my cakes!

Those are...a little turfy for me.

I really need glasses. I thought that first photo was Orphan Annie's Craniotomy sutures.

Those are lovely. I have to bring dessert for the party I'm going to on Sunday but I think I'll stick to undecorated Chocolate Chip cookie Cheesecake.

Recycled cakes...AWESOME!!

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAlison

Does that third one really say Super Bowl THREE?

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMeg

i think the last cake is an example as to why children need to be taught roman numerals in schools.
otherwise, how could cakes with edited decals be so accurate?

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered Commentermustdestroyalltraces

There's nothing really wrecky about the 4 cupcakes and the football, other than that it's a CCC.

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

These are truly some of the best actual wrecks I've seen! Football on home plate??? The poo cake almost made me throw up! And reusing last years plastic logos, Oh bad. that is like all time low budget low. Actually I used to have a manager like that... You would have to be on your own low budget low to even buy it. But we are grateful for their contribution to our entertainment.

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

maybe they are used to the teams that share stadiums with baseball teams durring the early fall. the baselines and stuff are still out. hummm...

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterutaduta

What's wrong with the football/baseball field combo?

Anyone for Calvin Ball? I brought my tennis raquet.

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJulie

WTH...that first one is just nauseating.

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCarmen

I don't know what's funnier. The misplaced quotation marks or the cakes :) Maybe both :)

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSuzyhomemaker

Oh man, those are too good to be true. The first one really does look like poop - better wait to bring that one out until the first keg is gone!

I was chuckling at the post until I got to the recycled "Superbowl" cookie cake. Then I was fully into LOLz territory.

Speaking of cookie cakes, I just learned from a co-worker that she went above and beyond to save me from a wrecky cookie cake on my birthday.

The baker was going to spell my name wrong, but the co-worker stood right there and made sure every letter came out right.

Awesome.

Baseball/Football cakes would definitely work in Philadelphia. From Lincoln Financial Field, you can clearly see Citizen's Bank Park. In fact I have a picture of the Bank when I went to my first Eagles game at the Linc this year. And during Game 4 of the World Series too. Sigh.

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRecoveringActor

Oh, that first one is just vile.

Nicole, you're missing nothing, trust me.

I voted for Cake wrecks, but I'll grunt anyway just because you mentioned it: Unf unf! *does appropriate pelvic thrusting* lol there.

I made green tea cupcakes last night. *separate* cupcakes. Iced in plain white vanilla icing, not wrecked. nommmmmmmm

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMiranda

Awful! And the swirled poo - gag!

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterFreedomFirst

I wasn't going to comment on these cakes--Anne-Marie did a great color commentary on them--but the WV was "cried". How could I pass that one up?
Most of us looked at the pictures and laughed until we cried. We may not know football, but we know a cake wreck when we see it.

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterdrgns4vr

you don't have to post this, but I used to work in advertising, and as of about 2004/2005 the terms Super Bowl and The Big Game became copywrited property of the NFL and there is a possibility that they could pitch a fit about you using them on your website, but .... probalby not - just thought I'd tell you that.

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCarrie

swirled poo .... can't breath ... tears on my face .... !!!

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKaren ~

absolutely LOVE your blog! Your commentary is the best!

I agree...poot-ball isn't so appitizing! :D

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterjaned21

Never could figure how to play football... just add those cakes to the confusion

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRhea

No one would mistake me for a sports lover but I do have a nostalgic affinity for baseball and to mess up a perfectly good baseball cake by putting a plastic foot ball on it is awful...

WV: eymister...EyMister, you got some poo on your cake!

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCyberrblue (Colleen)

Oh wow...how hard can it be to make a football? I made a better football cake than that in '95 the last time the Steelers went to the big game. And I was 5 at the time!

BTW, GO STEELERS!

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAmp

LOL, my fav is the swirled poo cake!

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJo

I could not resist my WV: watess. Used in a sentence: Watess this mess that "decorators" do and fully expect money for? AAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDebbi

I can't believe the superbowl logo cake would ever make it for sale! Who double checks these cakes before they get sold. I wonder if there is somone who works for each grocery chain that designs these cakes and sends the designs to the actual stores, with a little askerick that says *in case of not having correct year logo, cut with scissors and then add roman numeral with icing* ** cake is even better if its in colors that have nothing to do with the teams**

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterThe Pink Queen Albatross

I. Have. No. Words.

Actually, I do have a few. WTH?

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDenise

The first one is really nasty

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMella

this is great, even you't particularly care about the SuperBowl, it's still funny stuff!

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterFrom Single to Married

The football across from the baseball diamond cracked me up. Huge football on itty-bitty ball field.

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

LOL I love the modified decal from last year!

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKaty

Um... If you don't know much about football... please, PLEASE don't attempt a cake!!!

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterFluffy Cow

I am seriously grossed out by the leftover world series cake. HOW OLD IS THAT!!??!?!? Nasty!

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNichole

That first cake looks like turds stitched together to make...what else? A Frankenturd!

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterThe Chic Cakery

The last one is actually the logo from 2 years ago. They've had that thing for a long time!

(I didn't actually know that, I went and looked it up.)

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMarie

I saw my first live Cake Wreck today! I was at the grocery store and found a CCC. One "piece" of it was shaped like a recliner, and the other "piece" was a weird white and red "tv" with "Super Boll" on it. OMG!

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

LOL

Me and Hubs are just gonna watch movies and pretend this "event" isn't happening. :P

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMommyAmy

With crap like this being offered in grocery stores. It's a wonder more people don't bake at home.

But where else would they get the little plastic football?

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterksaldria

Ha, I swear I saw the poo one at Sam's club and thought of this site, but was out on the rare occasion alone, so the camera was home in the diaper bag... drat :)

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterThe Lewis Family

If this is Super Bowl XLIII couldn't they have just added an "I" to last year's decal?

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered Commentermallory

Those are true wrecks indeed. The recycled decals are just not worth it!! Let them go, seriously!
