What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets Celebrates SEQUINS!

There's a sparkly new trend in cakes, and I think you're going to like it:

SEQUINS.

Like this!

(By Cakey Jane's in Buckinghamshire, UK)

Ahhh, pretty as a new penny - I'm always a sucker for shiny copper.

The trick seems to be combining just the right amount of sequin bling:

(By Patisserie V Marie in Ontario)

Look how the gold sets off the rest of the cake - it really does seem to sparkle!

I like the peek-a-boo effect of this one:

(By The Fondant Flinger in Washington state)

Plus you can see why so many sequin cakes are gold and pink; this color combination is heaven together.

Here's another:

(By Juniper Cakery in Yorkshire, England)

So dreamy with those soft ruffles!

I'm falling hard for this cobalt blue number:

(By Shannon Bond Cake Design in Kansas)

Look how the sequins drift up the cake, like they're floating!

And this metallic bronze, omigoodness:

(By Kara's Couture Cakes, full tutorial at the link!)

This one amps up the drama with velvety black and the shiniest gold leaf:

(By Karen's Kakes in Texas)

Which reminds me: how about some black sequins?

(By Eileen Fry Cakes in California)

So classic with the red roses!

Here comes another in copper, set off with a single magnolia on top:

(By Cakes Rock! in Austin, Texas)

And a whimsical little keyhole design worthy of Tim Burton:

(By Delice in Bulgaria)

I think this might be my favorite!

Ahh, but I haven't shown you any silver sequins yet, have I? So here's the grandest vintage beauty - like a 1920s flapper dress reborn in sugar:

(By Cake Heart Custom Cakes in Manitoba)

::swoon::

It's so beautiful.

Hope you guys enjoyed! Happy Sunday!

Sunday Sweets Celebrates Parks and Rec

July is Parks and Recreation Month!

(By Jeanne Zubov of St. Petersburgh, featured here.)

If you think I'm going to use this as an excuse to post a bunch of fun cakes and reminisce about Parks & Rec the series, then you are absolutely correct.

But first:

"Marta, I'm gonna need two hours' worth of waffles."

(By Lauren Kitchens in Texas)

THIS'LL DO.

Besides, when else could I feature an awesome shoe-shine cake?

(By Sweet Ruby Cakes in Australia)

I bet Andy would love that name for his shoe-shine stand, too.

You may see a cute pony, but *I* see Li'l Sebastian:

(By Little Aardvark Cakery in Ireland)

::sniff:: SO CUTE.

Then there's the man, the myth, the legend:

(By Eat Cake Be Merry in New York)

And perhaps his greatest legacy:

(By Cakes Decor member Julia)

ALL the breakfast foods!

Believe it or not, someone actually made a Cones of Dunshire cake - and it's awesome!

(By Jam Cakes in Oregon)

It's all about the cones.

This reminds me of Leslie's favorite wildflower mural:

(By Yatt's Lil Kitchen in Malaysia)

So gorgeous - and all buttercream! I can't get over those razor sharp edges, wow.

Oooh, here's a beauty worthy of Duke Silver himself:

(By Mladman Cakes in Bulgaria)

Best saxophone cake I've ever seen - and yes, the sax is edible!

I suppose we should bring it back to this nation's parks, though, since that IS what we're celebrating this month:

(By Christina's Cakery in Michigan, found here.)

I had to double-check that the animals are hand-sculpted; I thought they were store-bought figurines!
Incredible.

Well, however you celebrate this month, minions, don't forget to TREAT YO'SELF:

(By Arte Da Ka in Brazil)

Sure, some folks like bubble baths... I'll take the cake. ;)

Happy Parks & Recreation Month, and happy Sunday, everyone!
