What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Makin' The Best Of This Summer Heat

Ahhhh, summer. You know, there's something about July here in Florida that makes you want to go outside, take a deep breath... and stab the sun right in the face.

Know what I mean?

Fortunately for us, there's now an ADORABLE way to do that:

[Baker unknown, anyone recognize it?]

D'awwww. I love how friendly the sun looks here - not at all like the eye-searing, makeup melting jerk we know he is in real life.

So while I'm huddled inside with the A/C cranked, let's look at some more sweet summery cakes, and pretend it's only a balmy 80 degrees outside.

(By Faboo Cakes in Tennessee, featured here)

Look, it's all my favorite kinds of fruit: the CAKE flavored ones!

Plus tropical fruits make everything feel more like a vacation. I mean, look at this pineapple print:

(By Cake Heart in Manitoba)

Don't you already feel more relaxed?

I just realized what that pattern reminds me of: remember when I went to Disney's Dapper Day a few months ago?

Pineapple suit!

Ok, back to cake.

For those who prefer ice cream on a hot summer day, how about this giant one?

(By Michael Almeida in Portugal)

I love the twist of using flowers in the cone! Plus I want to gnaw on one of those chocolate drips.

Nomz.

Speaking of flowers, these sweet pastels make the perfect summer wedding cake:

(By Lynette Brandl in London)

SO PRETTY.

And if that's the wedding cake, then you hope to get these at the reception:

(By Slywia Sobiegraj in Ireland)

Yes, I have a pineapple theme going today. Not even sorry.

Now let's throw in a pretty flamingo for good measure:

(By Cottontail Cake Studio in the Philippines)

Swooning! This almost makes me forgive the flamingo that tried to eat my face in the Bahamas.
Almost.

Now back to cute fruit:

(By Darcey Oliver, now Sugar Street Studios in the UK)

Everything's cuter with Kawaii faces on it. FACT.

And finally, a watercolor wonder that's truly... [sunglasses]... ONE IN A MELON:

(By Erica O'Brien in Connecticut)

Happy Sunday, everyone! Stay cool out there!

Sunday Sweets: 4th of July Fireworks!

Happy July, fellow Sweets lovers!

With America's Independence Day coming up, you know I had to find some pretty red, white, and blue numbers:

(By Sugar Hero, who has a complete tutorial on her site)

Plus this one has a drool-worthy surprise inside!

WOWIE. Our flag has never looked more delicious.

And look how sweet this old-fashioned bunting is:

(By Wild Orchid Baking Company in New Hampshire, now closed)

Ahhh, but I have some goodies for my non-American friends, too. Check it out, rainbow fireworks!

(By Victorious Cupcakes in the UK)

So pretty! I like the abstract take on them, and the silhouettes are perfect.

I love the way Glory (yes, her name is Glory!) took these ice cream cookies:

...and stacked them to look like triple-deckers!

(By Glorious Treats, online only)

SO CUTE.

Oooh, I may have spoken too soon on that last flag cake; this one ALSO looks darn tasty:

(By For Goodness Cakes in Charlotte, NC)

I'm loving the thick textured buttercream on top; can't you just FEEL that crunching ever-so-slightly, then melting in your mouth?

Ooof, I really want some cake now.

Hang on, here comes another one that's not helping:

(By b. sweet dessert boutique, online only)

Alllll the grabby hands. Gimmie.

Of course I couldn't pass up a chance to feature another Captain America cake, right?

(By Chocomoo Cakes in Sheffield, inspired by Mighty Mugs)

Look how clean and perfect that fondant work is! So good.

Now, let's end this post with a bang:

(By Adrienne & Company Bakery in Jeffersonville, IN)

Fireworks cake! I love all those bright neon colors together.

This one looks like an oil painting:

(By Katja Seaton in the UK)

Look how the fireworks spill over the edge:

I think that's my favorite part; the way the fallout looks so shimmery near the bottom.

Big finale!

(Baker unknown; Google Image Search has failed me. Anyone recognize it?)

Simple, but wow does that pack a punch.

Happy Sunday, everyone!
