What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Threadcakes!

As you may recall, Threadless.com hosts an annual contest called Threadcakes where bakers replicate one of Threadless' shirt designs in cake form. Threadless shirts are super fun, and the participating decorators are always amazingly creative. The contest just wrapped this week, and since Jen is one of the judges again this year, I thought I'd share some of *my* favorite submissions.

(I'll post a photo of the shirt design first, followed by the cake entry.)

I'm in love with this design titled "Alice's Sewing Basket:"

And here's Melissa's phenomenal matching cake:

I want this as a statue on my desk for all of eternity.

Here's one called "Firelight Cottage."
And Jennifer's cake:

Look at all that detail! I would never want to cut into that robot. EVER!

This shirt is too cool: "Doc Franklin's Miracle Tonic"

But Neli's cake is even better:

You can see closer detail shots at the link. So cool.

This design is called "Long Journey." I love the swirly blues and greens!

Vina did an awesome job of bringing the design to life:

Gorgeous!

"Strange Birds" is one of my favourite designs on Threadless. Look at these colours!

Cora's cake based on the design is just as fun.:

I love the white chocolate pretzel barrier!

"Diver No 12" is such a neat design on its own...

But Jamie's take on it is so... very... awesome.

And the rainbow pools are chocolate ganache mud cakes? Yeah. I'm so there.

This shirt called "Extraordinary Observer" is really cool:

But Georgia's cake really blew me away:

The base is made from cake, and the detail above is all pastillage and gum paste. Very impressive!!

I'll wrap up with a few favorites from the 2D category.

This sweet design is called "A Vehicle Built for Dreams." It reminds me of books I read as a kid:

Sarah's cake is so beautifully painted...

By Sarah Woodward
...and she's only 17! Wow!

"Sugar Land" is the perfect design to turn into a cake:

And Kim really brought those evil cavity causers to life:

"Birdsong" is a very intricate design:

And Megan didn't miss a beat when she turned it into a cake:

It took her a whole week to make! Well worth it, Megan.

There are HUNDREDS of entries on the Threadcakes site, so be sure to check out the gallery for more! This year's winners haven't been announced yet, but we'll let you know when they are.

The Kings of Wreckage

My friend John Gjertsen sent me this clip, and I would be downright remiss - nay, negligent! - if I didn't share it with the rest of you:

It starts a little slow, so feel free to skip the first 30 seconds. After that it just keeps getting better, as France's finest pastry chefs drop, devour, and destroy (not necessarily in that order) a cornucopia of cakery.

I can't decide which I like better, this quote:

Or the final few seconds of the chefs chewing. *giggle*
