What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets Falls For Fall

While I fully embrace early Christmas decorations, let's be real: it's still Fall, and I really, really, really love orange.

[By Cherry Blossom Cakes in England]

[whispering] It's so beautifuuuul.

Not to mention we don't get all the pretty leaves changing here in Florida - much less the cooler weather - so I've got to find ways to celebrate Fall everywhere I can.

Ohh, plus a Disney tie-in? BONUS.

There's so much to love in this one:

[By Dragons & Daffodils Cakes in Wales]

The top looks like a glowing candle! Plus the nearly-bare branch topper, the leafy frame, and the ombre orange bottom? YASSS.

Loving the peek-a-boo scene in this one:

And here comes the rare exception to my "no naked cakes" rule:

[I can't find the baker - help?]

This could almost bring me around on naked cakes, y'all. :D I like how the bottom looks like a giant whoopie pie - and all those leaves and acorns!

You don't see many grays or pale blues in Fall designs, which is a shame, because look how pretty:

The orange really pops with this! Plus those Wonderland checkerboards have me swooning.

Proof that we need more purples and bright yellows with our orange cakes:

Right? Those flowers bring the whole thing together and make it sing.

Speaking of flowers, here come my favorite kind:

[By Maria Valjuk, but I can't find her website. Anyone know it?]

ORANGE POPPIES. Heaven, you guys. Heaven.

Detouring from orange for a moment to show you one of the prettiest non-traditional Fall cakes I've found:

[By Magical Edible Art in British Columbia]

Those textures! Wood and rope and a sweet tarnished padlock, plus a peek-a-boo bear? It's just all so good.

And finally, back to orange with this incredible gravity-defyer:

[By Have Some Cake in the UK]

Gorgeous.

I hope you all enjoyed, and are having a lovely Fall weekend! Happy Sunday!

Pretty sure there’s a whooooole other layer of meaning to that bear cake. :)

@ECS: I take it you don't mean the Pooh bear cake.

While these are undeniably awesome, November 11th falls on a Sunday this year, so I was kind of expecting a salute to our vets.

Thank you for keeping to autumn. Winter holidays stuff can start the the day after Thanksgiving.

My take-away from this is that naked cakes are okay as long as they are giant whoopie pies

See, that's the trick to naked cakes: You have to work with the cake, not against it. Too many bakers try to treat it just like a typical frosting-covered cake that you use as the background for your design. But with a naked cake, the texture and color of the cake itself has got to be part of the overall look you're going for, and in this case, the natural/woodsy/gingerbread motif worked out very well. Naked-cake decorating isn't unusually difficult, but it IS new, and there aren't yet very many people who know how to make it look good.

Oh these are all so beautiful. Living in a place that doesn't really get anywhere near the autumn colours of the northern hemisphere, these remind me of the colours from when I lived in Canada.
