What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Friday Favs 3/31/17

Some of my favorite new submissions this week:

And they say cake decorating is dead:

It's not dead.

It's more in the process of being slowly bludgeoned to death.

Ergo the massive head injury and general fuglitude happening here.

Now let's take a rare glimpse at the Cake Wrecks Facebook Wall - because, oh yes, we're one of those ancient dinosaur sites that still has a Facebook page:

You're absolutely in the right here, Kim... but I like the way your friend thinks.

And here's one from Audrey, who used her cake to convey both an apology AND an explanation:

(Is that "poor" or "poop"? Because either works for me.)

I like it. Sweet and succinct. Maybe we should all give this technique a try.

"Sorry about the house. NETFLIX."

"Forgive the smell. TACO TUESDAY."

Or, for a one-size-fits-all approach:

"My apologies. EXPLOSIONS AND/OR ALIENS."

Anyone else been on Giraffe Watch this month?

If not, don't bother googling. It's just some giraffe faking a pregnancy for attention.

(Also that cake is fine; I just find it funny that even bakers are getting sucked in.)

Alexandria wanted a really basic beach scene for her son's birthday cake, so she ordered this design from the book and asked the bakery to leave off the characters and flowers:

To recap: she just wanted the water and sand. That's it. (She planned to add some toy sharks later at home.)

Here's what her bakery made:

BEACH PLEASE.

Thanks to Ken K., Katie R., Kim, Audrey O., Stephanie M., & Alexandria C. for teaching us the ocean is more of a stream, and the beach really is #1.

SO...."the beach really is #1..."?
I think I would call THAT *beach* (last, guacamole and mustard mess) a hearty #2.
=^e.e^=

Did they "ice" that last one with modelling clay?

March 31, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterShirley

I think that giraffe could use a bath.

@Facebook Kim bahahaha. As for the beach cake...what the beach indeed. I really, truly hope she did not pay for that horror :O

I really like the idea of using Kit-Kats to make the cake look like a wooden bucket - it's very cute, and bonus Kit-Kats are always a good thing! What's not good is the ugly mess on top. Boo.

That last cake, though... It honestly makes me twitch to look at it. It's so upsettingly wrong! Whyyyyyy?!

Fuglitude is my new favorite word. So succinct, yet so expressive.

The last cake is not a total loss if little Leo becomes a Green Bay Packers fan.

March 31, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterNeeta

I'm not sure what it is - a bucket of mashed potatoes with chives, perhaps, but I think it is delightful.

March 31, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterAlison in Indiana

Was that first cake supposed to be a giant baked potato?

March 31, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterTB Tabby

The first cake was supposed to be a pot of gold for St. Patrick's, right? As such, and after looking at the other items presented, it ain't that darn bad.

The fugly butterfly needs to fly away. Far, far away...

March 31, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterGinger

I assumed #1 started out being a pot of gold...that melted I guess?

..and I love watching April....day 37 on giraffe watch for me...should have baby by Sat night :)

Cake's a beach and then you cry.
Wonder what the heck they were going for with #1>??

Re:April the giraffe. She is faking her pregnancy to keep her man giraffe from leaving her for the younger giraffe two stalls down at the zoo.
Guess too many people been peein' in the ocean, what with that yellow "water" on the last cake.

Am I the only one that thought the first cake was potato salad? O.o

March 31, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterCraftyparrott

I had to look up "Giraffe Watch" and check out the video.

That cake is absolutely accurate. And it's not dirt on her legs... But that's fine, because constipation is HORRIBLE for pregnant ladies.

March 31, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterHairfish

OK, obviously the first one is for a pregnant lady. That's the only way mashed potatoes and Kit Kat make sense together.

The fuglitude is apparent on the 2nd one, but I wouldn't have known it was a butterfly. I thought it was multicolored nipples or possibly those creamy melty mints served at baby or wedding showers.

We can all agree that April is becoming a bit of a tease. Calve now or forever hold your . . .whatever.

Play-Doh beach cake? Yick.

March 31, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterMoira

Scalloped potatoes come to mind.

March 31, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterGayle

Well, it is beach. Unfortunately the close by chemical company incident permanently colored the sand bright yellow and that caused overgrow of algae.

March 31, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterKat

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks April is an attention seeker!

March 31, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterLuLu

Oh well if wreckerators think a beach looks like that then they really need to get out more lol. I love the whiskey excuse though. Wonder if that would work for an excuse to get out of work? Nah probably not lol.

April 1, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterArlene Marie

"Whiskey" probably explains a lot of these cakes, anyway.

I keep seeing people I know commenting on that giraffe cam on Facebook. And my husband told me today that my father-in-law is making bets about whether the giraffe or I manage to give birth first. (Yes, I actually am pregnant, and due in 12 days. Guess I win, if it's a hoax.)

April 1, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterBecky

The first one reminds me of one those egg puff things in a bucket. Except the secret ingredient was dogs up chuck

April 2, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterMafalda44

I love the WHISKEY cake! At my house "kids" is a valid excuse for anything:
I was going to do the dishes, but KIDS.
I was going to leave some wine for you, but KIDS
*confused stares* KIDS!

When I saw the whiskey cake I was drinking water, the waitress is now mad at me
