Sunday Sweets For Dad
![Date Date](/universal/images/transparent.png)
One of the job requirements for being a Dad is sharing all the things you love with your kids - no matter how outdated, embarrassing, or painfully uncool.
You know, like your favorite TV shows:
(Submitted by Angie Z. and made by CakeFX)
(By Mike's Amazing Cakes)
Or your favorite Jazz bands:
(By Cakes Du Soleil)
Maybe you insisted we learn an instrument:
(By Sugar Rush Cakes)
Or how to catch a ball:
(By Chattanooga Cakes)
You took us on our first road trips:
(By McGreevy Cakes)
And somehow we managed to get there without turning the car around.
Maybe you shared your prized comic book collection:
Or gave us your favorite childhood toy:
(By Avalon Cakes)
Maybe you took us to our first football game:
(By Cut The Cake)
... but understood when we were more interested in the marching band.
When we were older, maybe you kept singing silly songs like "On Top of Spaghetti," just to see us roll our eyes - before eventually joining in.
(By It's A Cake Thing)
On top of spa-GHET-iiii!
All covered with cheese
I lost my poor meeeeatball
When somebody sneezed!
Oh! And remember "Greasy Grimey Gopher Guts?"
[No cake here. You're WELCOME.]
And you know what, dads of the world? That stuff we didn't want to do, that stuff we moaned and groaned and rolled our eyes over? That's the stuff that makes us smile today, remembering how you loved us enough to share it with us.
Well, except maybe those Ella Fitzgerald albums blasting every Saturday morning. Sorry, Dad, but I do have my limits.
Now, LET'S GET GRILLING!
(By It's A Piece Of Cake)
Happy Father's Day, everyone!

Perfect.
Happy Father's Day!! *humming On Top of Spaghetti*
OMG the spaghetti cake and grilling cake :D and the t.v cake are all so awesome :D
Nonna means grandmother, though she and Nonno were responsible for Dad being here.
thanks for the memories...and thanks, Dad, for sense of humor.....
Loved the cakes and the commentary today...but you left out one that I think perfectly illustrates how we all feel about our Dads:

Was there a Marx Brothers TV show I somehow missed?!? I need to look that up, i bet it was a scream!
I do believe that's the first grill cake that actually looks like a grill with food on it! Love the flames coming up between the grates! So it CAN be done! All these cakes are so fun; I especially enjoyed the I Love Lucy cake. And thanks to all those unsung hero Dads who break the stereotypes & help with the dishes, the laundry, the cooking, etc. who enjoy & participate in raising their kids! You've come a long way, baby! ;)
Everybody sing with me now: "A-tisket, a-tasket, A brown and yellow basket...." The Queen of Jazz (and scat-singing), Jen -- what's not to love?! Let's dance! (And a shout-out to your Dad...!)
Aaaaaagh!!! I LOVE Ella Fitzgerald... if it wasn't for Dad I would never have learned about old time radio or the golden age of movies or fallen in love with all kinds of music...including oldies but moldies :)
Look!!! Hot dogs that don't resemble poop!
And what the smeg is wrong with Ella Fitzgerald? Okay, I get it, even the most classic of jazz albums turned up to 11 at seven o'clock on a weekend can be a bit annoying. But it's Dad's revenge for whatever awful music we blasted the other days of the week!
Consider yourself lucky. My dad listened to drum and bugle corps albums when I was growing up. I just didn't get it.
Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there!
Happy Falker Satherhood my peeps!
Cake #4 is particularly appropriate, as June is Accordion Awareness Month. Really. One of the best accordion players (and, seemingly EVERYTHING) in the world, Bob Hallett of Great Big Sea, told me so.
That accordion cake!
Is it just me, or is the sock monkey a bit creepy looking? (And appears to be fondling himself.) No? Just me? alrighty then! Soooooo...Hey, other than that the other cakes are wonderful! Love the road trip cake!!! And the comic book cake is SUPER sweet!
JEN! You've made my day! You're the only other person I'm aware of that remembers "Greasy Grimy Gopher Guts!" Do you know all the words? I can only remember part of them and have been wanting to the know the rest. I remember "Great green gobs of greasy grimy gopher guts, mutilated monkey meat, ------" ( and then I lose it, so I've inserted my own words which may or may not be correct) "---- dessicated doggy doo. Put them all in one big pot of stew. Then we'll all have lunch!" This would be a great theme song for Cake Wrecks, wouldn't it?
You've outdone yourself! Awesome collection. I Love Lucy is my favorite!
I am amazed to see a grill cake with foody looking food on it and cute little icing flames peeking through the grill. Absolutely amazed!
It rolled off the taaaable,
And onto the floor
And then my poor meatball,
Rolled out of the door
Thanks for the memories, Jen. I haven't thought of that song in years. And I join the chorus in saying what's wrong with Ella. I have an MP3 of her scatting "Blue Skies" that is just amazing.
Speaking of Ella Fitzgerald, did anyone know Pat Boone recorded a hard rock/heavy metal album? "In a Metal Mood: No More Mr. Nice Guy," a 1997 album in which Boone covers hard rock and heavy metal songs in a jazz/big band style. Boone promoted the album by wearing leather clothing and a dog collar. "Metal Mood" was Boone's first hit album in 35 years! )
Another one for Dad to fire up on Saturday and Sunday mornings when all else fails to get them out of bed...
Groucho had You Bet Your Life, but the Marx Bros. as a group (of varying numbers) started in vaudeville and transitioned to films. By the TV era they were well past their prime, though Groucho made a big comeback, really a whole second career, out of You Bet Your Life, on both radio and TV. The second time around the mustache was even real.
A recent Antiques Roadshow had one of two papier-mache duck props made to be lowered with the 'secret word'. It was only the backup duck so may have never been used, but it was still how impressively crude it was, like something schoolkids might have made. I guess on a grainy, black-and-white tv it looked just fine.
I thought I was the only one who ever sang Greasy Grimy Gopher Guts, the kids I work with find it hilarious when I sing it!
Birdergirl - Here are the lyrics as I learned them:
Great big globs of greasy, grimy, gopher guts,
Mutilated monkey meat,
Little turdy birdy feet,
French fried eyeballs swimming in a pool of blood,
And I forgot my spoon - Oh darn!
Birdergirl, the words I was taught in Girl Scouts way back when are:
Great big gobs of greasy, grimy gopher guts, mutilated monkey meat, little birdies' bloody feet, french-fried eyeballs wrapped in fingernails...and I forgot my spoon! Ain't that a shame?
Ok, we were taught:
boys are made of:
greasy grimy gopher guts,
marinated monkey meat,
dirty little birdies feet!
roasted eyeballs rolling down a toilet seat,
ain't I glad I forgot my spoon!
maybe that's the southern version? Groucho had a tv show, and Harpo was on it once to plug his book. other than that, they were only on the stage, film and radio together. but the cake is fantastic!
It rolled down the garden
and under a bush
and now my poor meatball
is nothing but mush
Never, ever forgot the second verse, lol!! :D :D
"It rolled down the sidewalk
And under a bush
By then my poor meatball
was nothing but mush"
I'm particularly impressed by the grill. After all the grill wrecks with "food" that was unrecognizible, if not unappetizing, it is amazing to see one that looks right.
I'm proud to say I remember all the verses to "On Top of Spaghetti", and just sang it aloud to my son!
On the other hand, I'll just pretend you didn't mention that gopher guts song, which holds the dubious distinction of being my second-least-favorite children's song ever.
Love the cakes though - the car trip one is my favorite! I should share that picture with my dad, with whom I already share many fond travel memories. =-)
@Sandy
The sock monkey definitely looks like he's "spanking" his namesake.
Really cute...only problem is tge spagehtti one...Nonna is GRANDMA in italian......awkward...
Very detailed cakes.
I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO REMEMBERED "GREASY GRIMY GOPHER GUTS"!
MY MOST FAVORITE CHILDHOOD SONG!!!!!
I still remember every word. "On Top of Spaghetti" is a close second.
And this is my rendition of "Greasy Grimy Gopher Guts" the way my mom taught me.
Great green globs of
greasy grimy gopher guts
Mutilated monkey meat
little dirty birdy feet
French fried eyeballs
Ain't that a dainty treat
especially for you.
Am I seriously the only person who see's that the "I love Lucy" cake says Tracy and not Lucy?????
