Sunday Sweets: 11 Bright & Bold Cakes for Spring

Forget April showers; whaddaya say we bust out some sweet flowers?
(By Lulu's Sweet Secrets)
And get this: those are sugar flowers. Which are better than real flowers because
a) SUGAR, and
b) they last pretty much forever.
Or at least until you accidentally drop one on a tile floor. o.0
More flowers, MOAR WHIMSY!
(By Ron Ben-Israel)
You know, I have a friend who actually doesn't like topsy-turvy cakes.
To which I say, "Look at this cake, Renee. LOOK AT IT."
I rest my case.
This one's a little funky, but the more I look at it, the more I like it:

Like a pencil sketch come to life, right? With watercolor flowers?
Such Spring. Much cake. Wow.
DO WANT.
We now interrupt these flowery spring cakes to bring you a mustachioed owl wearing a monocle. Because reasons.
(By Cake Nouveau)
"Who, me?"
Also, an adorable cake camper:
The bitty bunting! The birthday license plate! The heart hitch! This should totally be a little birdhouse. (You've seen the little camper birdhouses, right? So. CUTE.)
This one looks like a painting come to life:
So succulent!
(See what I did there?)
Springtime in Paris? Mais oui!
(By Lulu Cake Boutique)
Loving the color gradient, and those flowers! Ack! SO PERFECT.
Sometimes you just need a little bright & cheery neon ... and sometimes you need a lot.
Aww yeeeah. That's the stuff.
(The pink and orange stencils!)
Of course, there are also times you need Grumpy Bear sitting on a rainbow. BECAUSE MORE REASONS:
(By Celebrate With Cake)
We'll just call this the April Showers cake, K?
And finally, it doesn't get much bolder or brighter than this Fiesta-inspired number!
(By Calamity Cakes, more party pics here)
LOOK AT THOSE COLORS! And the ruffles! And the crepe paper flower! I can't decide if I want to eat it or wear it! (Though the way I eat, I could easily do both. Yep. Hand-to-mouth coordination: I lack it.)
Hope you enjoyed today's springy eye candy, guys! And as always, if you're curious which bakers near you we've featured here on Sweets, just click on over to our Sunday Sweets Directory.

Eeeek love the succulent cake :D :D and the rest-so bright and cheery :)))
I'm going to assume that the name on the Grumpy Bear cake isn't a mistake, but COJL?
Beautiful! My favorite is the neon. But the mom in me sees all those colors and sees everything stained.
So pretty! Because reasons!!!
I love how the Grumpy Bear cake has a grumpy face. His feet are the eyes and the rainbow is a mouth making a moue.
Amazing! Apparently there ARE other people out there that think topsy turvy cakes are just stupid. I don't understand the allure... Why would you want a cake that looks like it's about to fall over (and from some of the topsy turvy wrecks posted on here, do)?
The eiffel tower cake is by Everything Lulu www.everythinglulu.com
The neon cake is wonderful if it were a topsy-turvy cake, it would be perfect.
Stunning, I especially love the Eiffel Tower one.
My first instinct is that "Cojl" is from one of those languages where "j" still sounds like "y", hence "coil" or something.
Topsy-turvy cakes are fine if you're a baker who can pull it off, like Ron Ben-Israel.
But then, there've been a number of posts dominated by cakes that were topsy-turvy, but they weren't supposed to be.
The first one is probably the most stunning cake I've ever seen here, and that's saying a lot.
Lovely post! Look at all those... daisies. :) Love 'em all.
I'm not big on topsy turvy cakes either. I'm ready for that trend to be over. It's kind of been done to death already. This one is pretty, yes, but it would have been pretty straight too.
The cake camper is my favorite of this post. That thing is just too dang cute!
Don't get me wrong, that fiesta cake is beautiful - love the bright colors! However, I look at a party of that perfection & magnitude &, I'm sure, great expense and it just astounds me that THAT was for a 7-year-old's birthday party?! I'm over here looking for a bride to show up! Honestly, I tend to go a bit overboard for my own kids parties, I'll admit. But I start super early & search far & wide for sale items & make a lot of stuff myself including the cakes. I look at a party like that for a 7-year-old child & have to wonder, where do you go from there? What's her 16th birthday going to look like? Heaven help you when it comes time for her wedding! Yowza.
Sorry, negitivity done...main point, cakes = gorgeous! :)
My favorite is the succulent cake. I love topsy turvy cakes, but not this one. It's too formal to be an adorable topsy turvy cake.
That camper cake is adorable! The others are amazing in their precision and the skill required to create them.
I don't love most topsy-turvy cakes, but the ones I do like are whimsical, not formal.
I looked up Cojl. It rhymes with soul or mole. Never, ever would have guessed that.
Gorgeous cakes. Love the topsy turvy one. But grumpy bear and the camper are my favorites.
count me in the group that doesn't get topsy-turvy cakes. that trend never made sense to me & they seem a lot easier to mess up then the standard tier cakes.
I can't stop staring at the fourth cake - Bellaria designs. Just stunning. The colors are so fresh. I want!
I want that bear. Because reasons! (Thanks for the new catchphrase.) ;-)
My two favs today are the first one with the gorgeous realistic flowers and the Eiffel Tower cake. The flowers remind me that spring may eventually really come to the upper Midwest. And the Eiffel Tower cake is just lovely. Not a huge fan of the topsy turvy cake - I think of them as being more whimsical and this one is just so stiff and formal. Didn't do much for me.
I've always felt that Ron Ben Israel makes the most beautiful, well crafted, realistic flowers. That topsy turfy cake proves my point. Whatever you feel about topsy turvy cakes, those flowers are masterful.
Such beautiful cakes, all of them! I'm fairly certain if you looked up a definition of the word "hipster", you would find a picture of that owl cake! It is so flippin' adorable, as is the camper cake. Count me in as an anti-fan of the topsy-turvy cakes. Also, I pretty much agree with everything MovieMom said. I mean really, if you start the kid at the top, where do you go from there? O,o
Wow that first cake is absolutely gorgeous. That trailer is so adorable. Ooh that's my favorite Care Bear. I love the owl too so cute.
I think they are all beautiful and stunning!
LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!! Oh goodness, I want them all!! ALL CAKES ARE BELONG TO ME!
I'm another one who doesn't get the topsy-turvy cake trend. I can admire the skill when one is done well, but to me they scream enforced whimsy: "YOU *WILL* BE QUIRKY AND FULL OF FRIVOLITY! DON'T MAKE ME MAKE YOU JOLLY!" (A bit like the moustaches on everything trend, which also needs to fade away).
Having said that, these cakes are beautiful. I especially love the blue, white and yellow spring flowers one (#4)
Love the owl incognito cake! Heck, love all of them!
Some people are just so talented!!! I love that pink and orange one (mostly because I never thought those colors would work together and they do!).
I clicked over to read about the first flower cake (those gum paste flowers are magnificent!) only to find that Lulu the cake decorator has a PhD in Chemistry! How cool is that? I'll bet she cringes every time she makes a payment on her student loan, though.
While my personal sense of style is really digging the black and white with the watercolor lillies, I was instantly transported to GoT for the succulent cake...reminded me of a Stark feast...Maybe I watched that darn marathon too long this weekend oO
Not only have I seen the camper birdhouses, I bought one for my sister. It sits proudly on the dining room table because it is too cute to be outside!
Is the draping on number 3 3D or is it painted on? If it is actually draped I think it would take my amazement to a whole new level! If painted, that is serious talent!
I feel very strongly that the owl's moustache should be above his beak. And it's driving me crazy. ;)
Thank you for the mostly lovely comments about my fiesta cake, but it makes me so sad when I hear people being so judgemental. I spend months planning and preparing for my children's birthdays, and almost every element is created with love my me! The cakes, desserts, paperie, decorations and so much more. My daughters love to think through all of the detaills, choose colours, designs and help make decorations. I know the time will soon come, when all they'll want for their birthday is a pizza with friends, so I'm loving sharing these experiences with my girls while i can.
Why can't people just enjoy the pictures for what they are; unique, colourful, beautiful.. These artists put their heart and soul in creating works of art - that's what sets them apart from just another cake!
We like topsy-turvy cakes when they are well done. This one definitely is! If you made the colours in copper, orange, and rusts; this would be Steampunk perfection.
The camper is just the right size for Riverdance.*
All these cakes show the exceptional skill of the bakers. This is a great way to start Spring.
*Check out "Father Ted".
Beautiful cakes!
The first one w/the sugar flowers and the eiffel tower cake... sigh... they're both BEYOND dreamy! :)
